Assassin's Creed for Xbox 360 gets previewed
CVG, in case you didn't know, is kind of a big deal. In fact, they are so much cooler than us that they can preview the Xbox 360 version of Assassin's Creed -- a title whose existence has been a mystery -- like it is no big deal. The preview is pretty standard fare -- the moves are cool, it looks purdy, the HUD is a bit anachronistic. Really, the news here is that CVG has seen the Xbox 360 version (or have seen a build that Ubisoft confirmed as Xbox 360-bound), thus dissolving the exclusivity ambiguity.
No release date, general or specific, was announced, nor was there talk of how the game controls (an indication the CVG team likely did not see a playable version). This is another PS3 title that was once thought exclusive but now confirmed multiplatform. It could still be a timed exclusive for Sony, but to what extent is the company's PR line (i.e. not concerned with exclusives) reflective of internal opinion?

Well...PS3 fanboys on to plan T. Not too many plans left!! Youre running out of reasons to buy this $600 monster!!
DBX00 @ Jul 25th 2006 7:22PM
First: Why is the preview of the exact same stuff they showed for the PS3?
Second: Why would Ubisoft decline to make an announcement about other platforms and then show someone a demo of the game running on the XBOX360?
Conclusion: Another internet rumor quickly taken as the truth instead of investigating the source and content. If it hasn't been announced, it's just vaporware. Also, can the XBOX360 users just find some type of satisfaction with their gaming console instead of trying to convince people to not purchase a PS3. It really is beginning to show your insecurity about your decision.
goosedude @ Jul 25th 2006 7:26PM
Not that this was nay surprise.....
Granted I will probably pickup a PS3 as I pickup every console that has ever existed......
But there is looking like less and less of a reason for me to go crazy this fall about getting one.
Where are the games SONY??? I have yet to see a MUST have game for PS3....at least one that will be out in 2006.
Then again....I don't expect the US to get many units as Sony will shovel them all to the Japanese market where they will buy it even if it had no games.
ChaosInTheSnow @ Jul 25th 2006 7:28PM
CVG didn't actually preview this they've just pulled the preview from Offical Xbox360 Magazine, whose name is at the top and bottom of the article.

@ 3.
I still have many reasons to buy a PlayStation 3 :)
I will buy it for games like MGS, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Winning Eleven, Silent Hill, Killzone, God of War and so on ...
It is not that i dislike Xbox 360 or Wii, it is just that Sony is my choice when it comes to Videogames.
Well that and Blizzard, VALVe and NCsoft when it comes to pc games :D
PS. Sure some of those games may appear in 360, but i still want a PS3.
That does not make me a Sony Fanboy.

Whats wrong wiht someone wanting a PS3 to want it? heck i bought a 360 and didn't have a single game for it for months until fight night. So even if PS3 only has 1 or 2 games i want.. i'll get it, heck i cant lie, i'd buy it anyway since i'm one of those early adopters that likes to have all the consoles.

DBX00... it's not that 360 fans use PS3-bashing as compensation... it's that the PS3 just can't seem to do anything right... mix that with the fact that PS2 fanboys are horribly arrogant and annoying, and you have a recipe for PS3 bashing... tell yourself whatever you want, but the PS3 is the laughing stock of gaming right now.

Once again, has this article been validated with any proof? Nope. Therefore, you can't make any definitive statements that the XBOX360 is really getting this game. Arrogant comments have been coming from all the fanboys. Laughing stock of gaming is a stretch since the last time I checked the PS3 and Wii were the only consoles creating any buzz and the DSLite and PSP/PS2 were still outselling the XBOX360 console. If you want to go on the facts, Microsoft is the one in trouble this generation even with a headstart.
People are feeding off every little bit of information they can piece together. The reality is that until TGS when the entire platform is unvieled people are only going to have the price and rumors to talk about. Let's stop the bickering and see who is dominating the market come next year.

In Japan the PS3 and Wii are creating any buzz, and only in Japan is the DSLite PSP, and PS2 outselling the XBox 360. One tiny little country in this huge world!
And as lots of blogs and magizines point out Japanese are very dedicated to Sony since they are a Japanese company, and they employ lots of people in Japan.

I agree with you that there are some good games coming on the PS3. MGS, Resident Evil, Killzone, God of War...? God of War 2 is coming out on the PS2, the big joke at E3 was that the PS3 was unable to render a three way sex scene.
The clips I have seen for Killzone look impressive but I really want to see some in game play before making my final decision on that one.
I kind of laugh how everyone always compares the XBox 360 to the Sega dreamcast, but nobody ever compares the PS3 to the NEO GEO. A really nice, very powerful, and very expensive console.

first of all, when was the last time Ubisoft made a console-exclusive title? Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Farcry, Price of Persia, Brothers in Arms, Rainbow Six..etc.
Ubisoft has a good track record of making some of the best cross-platform games money can buy, and they don't usually stick to console exclusives. Especially not with a new franchise that's being developed by the same team that did Price of Persia...a game that was cross-platform across the board.
Do I doubt this game is coming to 360? Not one bit.
twism10000 @ Jul 25th 2006 9:25PM
If you were a 3rd party company, wouldn't it be smart to have your games on multiple platforms than just one. Making games are getting really expensive, so its no wonder UBI Soft is putting Assassins Creed on 360 and PS3.
You'll see more of this happening in this generation. Look at Grand Theft Auto by Rockstar

Actually, that would be America. This isn't 1987 anymore; Japan hasn't been the biggest or most important market for a long time. If it was, then Capcom wouldn't have gone out of their way to 'Westernize' Onimusha 3 after it sold poorly in the States.
JJ @ Jul 25th 2006 9:27PM
Jim N,
I was under the impression all those systems save the PSP were outselling the 360 here in the states as well.
Also Jim, the Neo Geo came out at the wrong time and didn't have much backing going in from other companies fromw hat i remember all they had really was SNK.
Where as we're talking about the company that currently rules the console market at the moment (sony) so i feel they'll do a lot better than the NEO geo even at the expensive price point because hey lets face it... in the greater scheme of things, there's little difference between 400 and 500/600 when it comes to a video game console, if you want it.. you'll have the money toa fford it.
and as for Japan's importance, I feel to be a world leader in the console market... you need to have ALL 3 key territories, USA/Europe/Japan, you can do good without one or the other, but to be the LEADER of the pack you need all 3.
DBX00 @ Jul 25th 2006 9:29PM
1) PS2 beat the N64, XBOX, and Gamecube...you can argue to what extent but it's base is still significantly larger than both the XBOX and Gamecube combined. Also, last time I checked the PS2 and PS3 were both Sony products so if they both do well that still means dollars to the Sony machine.
2) XBOX sales have been underwhelming even before the summer season. Extremely well would mean that they were at least meeting their projections which called for 11 million or so by 2007, they've got about 6 million to go worldwide to meet that one. Keep the hope alive though.
3) As far as game cancellations are concerned:
WWE 2007 - "The next instalment in our perennial SmackDown franchise is slated for release across multiple game systems this holiday. The highly anticipated WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 is scheduled to ship for Xbox 360, PSP and PlayStation 2 in November. Consistent with our goal of delivering the highest quality content across all next-gen platforms, we have decided to postpone the debut of the SmackDown series on PlayStation 3 until the holiday 2007 timeframe."
I'm aware that other games have been cancelled because the development teams couldn't afford to do a PS3 version but that just speak to the size of the development team and not the platform. The next group of responses should be based on facts instead of just attacking statements.

PURE SPECULATION FOLLOWS
What's funny to me is that everyone will start going silent if Sony announces a cheaper price for their online service and offer movie, music, and tv downloads. Sony has yet to really announce the software and online platform. They've given people the price and release date to complain about and we should give them to justify this price point with the remaining portion of the PS3 platform. I could easily justify the price of the PS3 if I didn't have to fork out an annual fee to play games. In case you're wondering how they would be able to do that. Well, if you have a profitable "Itune" like business you can support having the network system.
polly @ Jul 25th 2006 9:43PM
C'mon 360 price drop! There is now officially too many good games I want for that system to let it slip by. Not to mention 7 or 8 first gen XBox games I still want to try. I'm sold. PS3...well I'll think about getting that in a year or so if they manage to get a decent library that doesn't center around Metal Gear and Final Fantasy and let alone coming down to a more reasonable console-only price.

JJ @ Jul 25th 2006 11:07PM
Right on Night elve, i could care less about multiplats.. since the way i am, i buy stuff on whichever system i feel i need another game for at the time. Like for instance if a multiplat came out for box/ps2/GC... i would alternate, I'd get Def Jam on GC, NBA street on ps2 and NFL street on the box.
Multiplat games are hardly gonna hurt PS3 sales, the only way they would is if there were time exclusivities on stuff, like there could very well be on Assassin's creed.
BUt irregardless, i hardly see this as a nail in PS3's coffin, i mean most of 360's launch titles were multiplatform too and it still sold well enough.
The3rdNuisance @ Jul 25th 2006 11:19PM
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=142409
As far as I care, it is confirmed. As of right now, I only have one reason to want the PS3 and that is Coded Arms. Every other game that I care about is going to the 360 and PC also.
The reason PS3 bashing is rampant everywhere is because of the PS3's price, and Blu-Ray. If they killed a meaningless overpriced format, the PS3 would be reasonably priced for games, hell it even makes sense from a business perspective. Sure the PS3 will get a lot of great features, but the price is outrageous because of one very little problem. It is going to take a few years before any company even attempts to use a whole BRD so it is useless.
The thing I personally hate about the PS3, is the name. Its an entertainment system, not a dedicated console, so the highly specified name, makes the product seem a bit ridiculous. PS3 is too specified, and Wii is to vague...
Jim N. @ Jul 25th 2006 11:44PM
JJ,
Where did you find that data? I will guess that the DS Lite is outselling the 360 in America and Europe. But I have not seen any data that states that the PS2, PSP, is outselling the 360 anymore now that manufacturing has caught up with demand.
True the company that made the Neo Geo did not have the backing that Sony does, but the comparison of a powerful machine that is very expensive I think holds true. And Sony's backing is still strong but I think we are starting to see the crumbling of their strong foot hold.
Maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but gaming is not just for nerds anymore. Today the Atari generation is now in there 30s and 40s and they are still buying video game consoles. The market in America is huge, as I am sure it is huge in Europe also. Japan is a key market that a video game console has to conquer to really win, but I do not think that they are the power house they once were in the gaming industry. And if you win in America , Europe but loss Japan that is a pretty good showing.
The loss of Assassin's Creed is not the nail in the coffin of the PS3, but I think it is definately another straw on the camels back. This game looked so good that I was ready to buy a PS3 for that but also Reissance Fall of Man, and Kill Zone. But now if there are only two titles that I am interested in I might just wait until a little while, or maybe wait to see if I can pick up a cheaper used PS3 off EBay. So you are right unless Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid both come out on the XBox 360 I doubt there is a silver bullet that will kill the PS3.
DBX00,
XBox Live Silver account has been free for quite some time. So really this free service of Sony's is not really anything new. They will almost have to offer some free service to entice people into it, so they can actually be competitive. And like you pointed out they have not told us what exactly their pricing model will be. We do not know what services they plan to charge for. And actually I would be very concerned if they offered a completely free service because if it is not a revenue generating service the chances of them upgrading and maintaining it will be very uncertain, they might just say "hey its free what do you expect!". They may continue to improve the services that produce money, but addressing issues and conerns that affect the free areas may get pushed off and not fixed until they have all other areas addressed.
Honestly I can not figure out why people expect free online gaming. Keeping servers running, tracking stats, and offering services like voice and video chat, plus constantly improving on all these services is a very expensive endeavor. And really $60 a year for a single gamertag for any game is worth the money by itself, being able to keep track of friends lists no matter what game they are playing at the time, all this is simply the best online gaming experince that there is out there. XBLA has super cheat titles that are as addictive as some of the great Nintendo games. I figure in downloading the demos of games it has already saved me from buying two or three crappy games so at $60 a game having the XBox Live subscription has saved me close to $180.
Earlier I said there was no silver bullet to kill the PS3, I just thought of one that would probably do it. If Sony did some sort of a firmware update that would not allow used games to be played on a PS3, that is about the only thing I can think of that would kill the PS3.

Oh, by the way, I've got some snake oil to sell, anyone interested? Ought to be plenty of buyers, especially in this crowd.
JJ @ Jul 26th 2006 1:28AM
Well all i know is the last data i saw which was either May or June, PS2 still outsold the 360 by a margin of 20k consoles, it MAY have changed, but 360 has been readily available for a few months now fromw hat i've seen.
Now the DS, thats outselling pretty much EVERYTHING they're at what? 20mil units now? Go ninty.
I think 360's main reason for not selling as many consoles as it should is, there's not a lot of incentive for most gamers other than early adopters and gear heads to get the system as the game selection as of right now is pretty sparse.
But once some competition rolls around, maybe that'll get some developing butts in gear =)

Jim N:
Sony has announced that their base online system will be free of charge, just as Xbox Live Silver is. However, they have also stated that online play will be a part of this free service along with friends lists, voice chat, messaging and other things. That is all they have announced. However, this is potentially a huge draw card for Sony. Think about it:
Xbox 360: $400, Online service: $60 per year, 5 years: $300 Total: $700
PS3: $600, Online Service: free, unlimited years, $600.
Suddenly, all this price advantage which Microsoft had is no longer really an issue if you are planning on taking the system online to play games. Also, if you are posting on forums about the system, I am sure you are playing online (you stated as such). Now I realize that not all people are going to play online but for the people who are it could be that extra incentive to get the system.
Also you state that Xbox Live is the best online system out there. Well, if you take console gaming as the only type of online gaming, yes, it is. But there is nothing to say that Sony's online system wont be as good or better. Now I am not saying that it will be or wont be, it is just something to consider.
Finally on the point of people wanting online gaming for free, I have two statements:
1. If you have the decision between getting a service for free or at a price, and a high price at that, which would you choose?
2. PC games have had free online forever (except in the case of MMOs). I play on my computer more that I do on my consoles at the moment and I get a huge community, and great online play for free. As the consoles become more like PCs, why should one cost money and the other not? If these new consoles are supposed to be the ‘computer of the living room’ why should they be treated differently?
People left, right and center are bashing Sony. I dont think they should discount them yet. We’ll have to wait and see what happens at TGS.
clee @ Jul 26th 2006 6:15AM
Wow, you are really really gullible if you believe Sony when they say they will provide free online gaming. I'm sure you believed them when they were talking about PS2's 'Toy Story graphics' and '7 usb ports on PS3' and '2 HDMI ports on PS3' and 'We think the Wii controller is a gimmick'. Wake up! Sony is infamous for hyperbole and not delivering on their promises.
Think realistically. It requires a lot of effort to provide a centralised gaming service like Xbox Live Gold. You think Sony is somehow exempt from the costs involved? The only way they can provide it for free is to integrate advertisements into the service.
There's no such thing as 'free'. The 'free' internet browser in the PSP that Sony fanboys gloat over? Sony charged you for that when you purchased the damn thing. If they don't integrate advertisements into the service you will pay for it some way or another, like higher game price.
Lama Boy @ Jul 26th 2006 6:47AM
Ah this is fun isn't it! I love the smell of hype & the fan boy tension in the air! I hope it does come to the 360 (i've got one & I loves it). Looks like a quality title. Not wanting to be drawn into the argument over PS3/350.. but won't PS3 games be more expensive if they're on Blu-ray discs? Not only development costs but the physical media is a new technology! Sounds to costly for my tastes!
KawF @ Jul 26th 2006 6:48AM
Damn EA, they are charging me like $50/month for my Battlefield 2 addiction. They have the audacity of providing a centralised way of finding servers and all... and charge me for that. And like, the internet, it charges me for usage of peer-to-peer chat, VOIP, and vid-com... seriously, I'm getting poor!
Oh wait, NONE OF THAT IS TRUE!
See, here's what. Microsoft carges you for AIR. Ever played a PC game online? Ever used AIM or ICQ? Yes, amazingly, these can be free. How you say? By minimizing the ammount of traffic that has to pass through their servers. If Microsoft can't manage to construct such a system for the Xbox, what says Sony can't do it? All they do is keep a list of users and make sure these users know the IP of each other. Did none of you pay any attention to the GDC presentation by Microsoft? They are working together with companies like Gamespy, etc. Which again, provide FREE, online multiplayer connectivity for basically every PC game at the moment. These costs are small, they can be put on the costs of the games, can be put on as part of every microtransaction you make, heck, even ads while loading the game for online play works fine for me in Battlefield 2, and I don't see why it couldn't work fine in any other games.
I'm just amazed at the level of technological knowledge of the people commenting on these matters. You claim to actually know how stuff works, but you seem to be on the level of "The Internet is a series of tubes...".
Have you ever even played a game online on PC?
You have gotten so used to Microsoft ripping you off for online console gaming that you gladly bend over and accept it.
KawF @ Jul 26th 2006 6:51AM

The GDC presentation was of course not by Microsoft, but by Sony.
I'll find some link for it. Should be up on IGN. Very interesting and lays out a good ammount of their online plans.
Cdaghostie @ Jul 26th 2006 6:55AM
I'd like to put in one thing.
Everyone makes fun of the 360 and PS3.
PS3-They overhyped the PS2 so why not this one
-Its losing its 3rd party exclusives
-GTA
-Assasin's Creed
-It copied the Wii in the controller
Xbox 360-Where's the games?
-Xbox Live is paid for although its only 30 a year
-Its the first next-gen system and people are waiting to buy it until they see the others
Most people make fun of the PS3 because the PS2 was overhyped.
Most people make fun of the 360 because its not showing up all its cards.(Which is smart because PS3 is coming around soon and they bog games all around the PS3's release)

Does that not sound EXACTLY like what is on Xbox Live Gold? How many of the games actually have dedicated online servers for you to play on (and are not MMO's). None as far as I know. They all require the HOST, that is YOU, to host the online play. This is done by.... drumroll... with a FREE "lobby feature" for Playstation Network Platform.
Of course.... with Microsoft, they charge for that immensly expensive feature. You pay to host your own server... and your buddies PAY to play on YOUR server... not to you, but to Microsoft. Sweet deal for Microsoft though. Free cash.

To KaWF - xbox live is $50 a year (not $60) That's less than 14 cents a day. (could be even less, Walmart ad had a year card for $35). Before xbox, I was a PC gamer for years playing online and I can tell you that xbox live gaming is far superior for getting my large group of friends together for online gaming. I don't know how good Sony live will be, but I can't imagine my xbox community jumping ship for $600.
And why would someone ready to drop $600 on a console be all that concerned about maybe saving $50 a year?

Is the Xbox fanboy slogan:
"It's cheaper than the PS3, well, at least the Core sticker price is, AND if you don't count all the additional costs needed to actually use it!"
Just because "the cost is low" does not mean that I will accept being robbed blind for a service which quite honestly does not justify paying for. I'd rather stick with my PC and laugh at people paying to host servers on hardware they own. I'd even rather use X-Fire which is "Live" for PC's basically. [Now owned by MTV]
Of course, someone will bring up: "But you don't HAVE to play online, and you don't HAVE to get patches for your games (even if needed), and you don't HAVE to buy the harddrive for downloadable games..." etc.
To that I say: how many do you actually think are content with NOTHING more than an unconnected Xbox 360? They might as well have put that money on an Xbox (1) or PS2 and gotten away at what, 1/3 of the price for basically the same functionality. Microsoft have said themselves that at least 50% of the install-base "are connected" [to live], and that the aim is to have 100% connected "soon".
Of course, someone is going to bring up: "But it's got prettier graphics!"
To that I answer: But usually you claim that graphics don't matter?
And so on...
It just gets silly how much some people try to justify the purchase of their console of choice by using non-facts and FUD.
I at least TRY to stick to actual facts. If I am actually wrong on some facts, good, correct me. I like FACTS, not FICTION as much I usually see. (Oh, by the way, I never stated that the price was $60/year as far as I know, looks like DeathX or whatever his name was did so though, but no worries)
I justify my choice of liking what the PS3 will bring by: Sure it's got a high sticker-price, so what? If I'm so poor that the the only sticker-price I can afford is that of the 360, then I'd just pay it in installments. Most stores here offer a 0% rate payment plan over 12 months or more. Basically the same thing as all the hidden costs of the 360, just that you know from the start how much it will cost you.
And for the "Average Joe" arguments... seriously... "Average Joe" is great to use as the "target consumer" since "he" is whatever you for the moment WANT him to be. I really don't care about average Joe. I care about myself. My paycheck is small, but sure as there's sun in the summertime, I actually manage to put away a bit each month in order to save up to the PS3. If I could not, then, I wouldn't buy any console, or at least, no new consoles like Xbox360 or PS3. I'd buy a still, and further ahead, supported PS2.
And by the way, I really don't get why people compare the 360 to the top-of-the-line PS3. All you need to get a next generation playstation, with 1080p support for movies and gaming, Blu-Ray, and amazingly, some really good games is the $499 (20GB) version.
The only situation in which you might want to buy the more expensive on is if you want WiFi built-in and the at the moment only way of outputting a pureley digital signal that could be output on a regular PC monitor with a HDMI->DVI converter or on an expensive HDMI-based home entertainment system.
Sony is by no means forcing anyone to buy the more expensive verion. Just because they intend to launch in certain territories with just the more expensive verison due to what, a roll of the dice, OR, they might have figured out that certain territories almost DEMAND the cheaper system.
The only reason if you don't have a HDMI-based entertainment system to but a $599 system from the start, is if you plan on actually buying such a system within a year or at most, two. Otherwise, just buy the cheaper version. You can still sell it on and "upgrade" to either a used or a new 60GB version later on.

Ms bitches want this game bad, to bad your not getting it. Make up everyting you want, if it's going to be a PS3 exclusive some whining ms bitches aren't going to change that. When you bitches hear something from ubisoft then you can say all you want.
I'll gladly pay $600.00 for the PS3 because it worth it, assasin's creed exclusive or not. The 360 is probably going to get phased out in a couple of years, because it just basically an upgraded xbox. The PS3 is something new it's full of the cutting edge technology and offers just so much more than the 360. What's $100.00 more when your getting just so much more for your dollar.
