There are countless cases where people are murdered for things like cars. I'm sure the media wouldn't suggest that owning a car makes you a killer.

...although I'm sure some cyclists would disagree.

The games for the Xbox and Gamecube are coming to a close, but I still play both more than my PS2.

Thinking about killing someone for an Xbox soon?

they are not using violence in games as a blame factor in the case....

the easy thing to deliberate is everyone except the ringleader admits to beating people with bats and knives... the ringleader says he was never there and isn't rich enough to afford an xbox (yet they have his boots and other evidence on the scene that he was there). not too much to deliberate if several admit and evidence puts the last one there...

Assumably. There's nothing negative about the death penalty in this thread, so it's hard to imagine how it came up.

It's like if there was a topic about the Xbox killers eating ketchup in the courtroom and him claiming "Man, I'm happy I live in a place without tomatoes."

Sure, maybe there are valid reasons for that, but certainly not in this article.

Yes, the best way to not feel superior to another human being is by not killing them.

I, on the other hand, go on ritualistic killing sprees so that I may feel equal to my fellow human beings.

The death penalty is essential in certain conditions:
a) The crime rate is too high, such that the cost of maintaining life imprisonment is to high for the area to handle.
b) The crime rate is too high, such that it can be reasonably deduced that life improsonment is not high enough a deterrent to dissuade people from commiting them.
c) The said person is likely to cause more problems alive than dead, even if said person is inprisoned

Additionally, the death penalty is preferred in certain cases:
a) where the criminal is unlikely/unable to return a contribution to society, ever.

In most other cases, other forms of penalties would be preferred, but there is still a place for the death penalty in the judical system.

Now get back on topic please, before I start typing more.

I completely agree: prison time isn't stopping crime, so we use the death penalty, and since the death penalty isn't stopping crime, we should go to more exremes, like genital mutilation, and Celine Dione concerts, and if that doesn't stop crime, we should just gather all the poor, black, and brown people (who are all much more likely to commit crimes than any affluent citizen) and torture/kill them before they even have the chance to commit crimes.

It gets better, when I reported it this morning the article was "Xbox Murder Case Trial" and CNN has now changed the title of their article to "Xbox mass murder case goes to the jury." Next thing you know they will say the Xbox epidemic is responsible for the Middle East fighting at present. The media will do anything to get a story some attention...sad

Verdict is in. All three were convicted. Jury still needs to decide whether they'll get life in prison or lethal injection.

Psaakyrn:

a) The crime rate is too high, such that the cost of maintaining life imprisonment is to high for the area to handle."

That does not happen in this country. The percentage of prisoners who actually receive a life sentence is too low to be a strain on the system. The prison system is overcrowded with first-time drug offenders. If anything, the system puts a strain on itself by incarcerating those who should instead be offered treatment for their addiction.

"b) The crime rate is too high, such that it can be reasonably deduced that life improsonment is not high enough a deterrent to dissuade people from commiting them."

This NEVER happens. The death penalty has been around for thousands of years, and it has yet to deter crime. People in Texas, the most kill-happy state in the union, still commit haneous crimes, and the state still invokes the death penalty. Most studies show that the death penalty does not deter crime.

"c) The said person is likely to cause more problems alive than dead, even if said person is inprisoned."

This is objective. I am not qualified to discern whether or not someone will "cause more problems alive than dead," and neither can you. No one can, and that includes state and federal governments. How many "problems" is someone going to cause in prison? They could escape, and kill again, sure, but that rarely happens.

"Additionally, the death penalty is preferred in certain cases:
a) where the criminal is unlikely/unable to return a contribution to society, ever."

So, by that logic, everyone given a life sentence without the possibility of parole should be executed? That's not even realistic.

On topic: Why are the media still confounded when people kill each other over relatively low-value material goods? I mean, when people were slaughtering each other over Air Jordans, it was the same speil. This is what happens in a capitalist society when 98% of the population is separated to the nth degree from the means of production.

Killing them (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional) is too much, but breaking one of the guy's leg and punching the girl in is pretty face, that's what I had do. Who's laughing now bitch! Your parents never told you it's bad to stole something?

I hope they don't receive lethal injection.

a) If that doesn't happen, then don't have it. I never said we must have the death penalty.

b) Hard to conclude, since different areas have different cultures, so people might have different reactions to the death penalty. I'm reasonably sure it does help keep the drug trafficking rate in Singapore low for example. (though effective policing does help as well)

c) This is very rare, but might become more common as terrorist groups grow.

Next part:

a) False. Most reasonable prisons I know (unfortunately, that means only Singapore) does have some manner in which people doing their jail terms can still contribute to society. I'm more of referring to people who simply doesn't repent, or people who's too deranged.

So if someone killed someone because there friends to...should we ban friends

If someone killed someone over a telephone...should we ban phones

If someone killed someone over a house...should we ban homes

If someone killed someone over a pool...Should we ban water

If someone killed someone over money....should we ban money

If someone killed someone because of family...should we ban family

if someone killed someone over burping...should we ban burping

no we wouldn't

so don't ban video games over lone peoples actions...plus this isnt about video games this murder case its about property which happens to be a xbox..

plus i dont hear them going OMG LOOK WHAT CLOTHES DID THEY MADE SOMEONE MURDER SOMEONE...ZOMG BAN CLOTHES!

Psaakyrn -

You are definitely correct; from everything I know, the death penalty has contributed to the fight against drug trafficking in Singapore (probably because the folks in the drug trade can actually watch their comrades disappear).

I'm against killing people generally, so as far as killing traffickers, I'm going to have to balk; definitely not my style. I will say, though, that the death penalty works as a deterrent when it far, far outweighs the crime (as in moving drugs), and when one applies it to crimes where perpitrators are not overcome by emotions or psychosis.
