Sony PR rep confirms 10,000 PS3 dev kit shipments
In a statement made to Next-Gen, SCEA PR manager Ryan Bowling spoke briefly on the current status of PS3 developers and the number of shipped development kits. Said Bowling: "The best and brightest development teams are hard at work creating familiar franchises and original IP for the PS3 including – EA, Konami, Sega, Rockstar, Activison and our own internal studios just to name a few... To date we have shipped more than 10,000 development systems to 208 companies in 11 countries, the largest number ever for a PlayStation platform."In related news, the EVO Phase One pc/console has shipped 13 dev kits.

So that means that each developer has on average 48 dev kits? Wtf? and I thought they were expensive...
Ethan @ Jul 26th 2006 5:38PM
So... I guess that means lots and lots of games for the Playstation 3.
Jay @ Jul 26th 2006 5:41PM
I think I bumped my head. a positive news post about Sony and a negative about nintendo?!
What is this Life on Mars?
ABigSmall @ Jul 26th 2006 5:42PM
Hey, good job with the developer support, Sony! I won't be buying the PS3, but it's good to see some positive support after months of Sony blunders.
T-Man @ Jul 26th 2006 5:43PM
maybe these were orders placed before E3, and sony said "no take backs".
vaylen @ Jul 26th 2006 5:43PM
This is great news. I can't wait to get my PS3 and start playing games via HDMI on my HDTV on 25 and 50GB discs. Most excellent!
Paul P. @ Jul 26th 2006 5:49PM
A good thing to keep in mind, as well, is that there are more development companies, more developers, and they are all larger than ever before, so of course there will be more dev kits going out than ever before. For any console.
timkedojeh @ Jul 26th 2006 5:49PM
And how many of those dev kits are final? I very much doubt that all 10,000 are the final kits.
Night Elve @ Jul 26th 2006 5:51PM
Right on Sony ¡¡¡
I cant wait for the PlayStation 3.
jSn @ Jul 26th 2006 5:53PM
#7 - Exactly, they are obviously counting all 4-6 revisions of the dev kit. Even with that, I don't believe for a second that they have sent out 10,000 of them. We've previously heard that the dev kits are expensive and several lower tier developers can't afford them. They're just trying to make good news where there is none, since their console is getting shat on everywhere.
gwangi @ Jul 26th 2006 5:59PM
This reminds me of how Sony does numbers. They like to compare their number of consoles shipped to the competitors number of consoles sold. It's like apples and oranges.
And I agree with the number of revised dev kits counting into this number.
Pince @ Jul 26th 2006 6:14PM
I think it would have been more plausible if they would have just said " a bajillion dev kits".
The stat I would like to see is how many games are actually planned / in development for the PS3. 10,000 dev kits means nothing to me and to most gamers.
Interpret this stat as you will, but each fanboy will see it the way they want to until we get some numbers that actually tell us something concrete about what the PS3 library will be like.
ihya @ Jul 26th 2006 6:18PM
lol at the Sony haters struggling to find an angle to shit on this news story.
Give it up, you sound pathetic.
striderhayasa @ Jul 26th 2006 6:21PM
I agree with the skepticism of the numbers game that sony constantly plays. I doubt they're as literal as they would lead you to believe. We'll see what happens come launch time. I still won't be buying a PS3 though.
Clint @ Jul 26th 2006 6:25PM
Wow. That's amazing. I guess all the freaks doom and gloom news wasn't true afterall. Who would a thunk that?
Raynre @ Jul 26th 2006 6:33PM
ihya:
lol at the Sony lovers hording around good news that might or might not possibly be true numbers and jumping on anyone that might have a reasonable translation to Sony's usual smokescreen gibberish.
Give it up, you sound pathetic.

#10 "They're just trying to make good news where there is none, since their console is getting shat on everywhere."
It really amuses me how people can play sherlock without a single proof xD
Good news though, cant wait to get my hands on one of those beauties *drewling* make games, FAST! :P
JJ @ Jul 26th 2006 6:53PM
Ok first off lets not get into the whole shipped/sold numbers thing because MS is just as guilty for reporting just shipped numbers as sony is, just look at the recent numbers.
As for the news, its neutral, no need to read deeper into than needs to be. ok They shipped out 10k dev kits, cool. No need to praise or diss the company for doing what they need to do.
No need to harp on sony for playing a numbers game, they're dev kits, consumers aint getting them so no need to be ripping into sony for sending or not sending out that many. Because in the end only Sony knows the numbers and what reason would they need to lie about how many dev kits they sent out? How would that effect them in the least for the public to know that?
Anta @ Jul 26th 2006 6:57PM
I WANT ME TEH PS3 YO!
T-kay @ Jul 26th 2006 7:00PM
I'm actually going to sell my Xbox 360 and get a PS3 when it comes out F*CK YOU MICROSOFT and YOUR SH*T CONSOLE
Lee @ Jul 26th 2006 7:05PM
You're all pathetic. For God's sake the ones bashing the Sony-lovers (as blind as their love may be) are just as bad, the number that state they never intend to buy a PS3 and yet are in EVERY DAMN SONY POST.
So why the hell are you posting here?! Think you can convince a few "Sony fanbois" to not buy a PS3? Or perhaps preparing for the event where PS3 fails, and people will know that you told them it'd happen first?
Dicks.
marcin @ Jul 26th 2006 7:37PM
ahhhhh, PS3 sucks. Wii sucks more.
Xbox owns the universe.
cringer8 @ Jul 26th 2006 7:51PM
This seems about right. If anyone is wondering, "with all those dev. kits, where are the games?", there's an answer for that: PS3 games are going to take some time. That simple. Next summer and Christmas is going to be awesome for PS3 owners. That's why I'm not buying mine until next April (for my birthday...that's right, I buy myself birthday presents...what's it to you?).
Just look how long it took for decent Xbox 360 games to surface.
DarknessRises @ Jul 26th 2006 7:56PM
After months and months of having to blunder through millions of comments by fanboys talking about how their console is better, or the other one sucks, I have come to the conclusion that none of them seem to understand the idea of a free-market economy. If we were to sit here and have only one console win in the end, don't you all think that the games eventually released would be slack and lackluster, simply because the company that won has no competition? Competition is what keeps our beloved gaming past time around. I salute all of you who even though you have your preferred console choice, don't criticize and belittle everything that the other companies do. No one can even honestly say the Wii or the PS3 will not be a great system, or that the XBOX 360 won't be the winner in the long run. So, after a long tangent, I am just trying to say GET OVER YOURSELVES!
sputnik @ Jul 26th 2006 8:03PM
It will be easier to buy a Dev-kit this Christmas than a PS3.
Jeff @ Jul 26th 2006 8:30PM
"This reminds me of how Sony does numbers. They like to compare their number of consoles shipped to the competitors number of consoles sold."
Yeah, because as we all know, there are at least 9,500 PS3 dev kits sitting on store shelves at Gamestop. I'm personally waiting for the price to come down to $15,000 before I buy one.
Please, people. Use some common sense in your arguments.
Ethan @ Jul 26th 2006 9:15PM
LOL Jeff, I know, Im waiting for the ones that are shipped to go down in price before I buy one at wal mart. Hilarious the excuses fanboys try to use isnt it.
Pince @ Jul 26th 2006 10:18PM
Are there any non-fanboys left in this world. Seriously, to all of you that seem to owe some sick allegiance to a company of a console... why?
Do you have nothing better to boast about than how your favorite gaming system is better than everyone else's.
Here's a newsflash. Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo (yes, even Nintendo) as a collective could care less whether you live or die as long as they get your money. So there is no point in defending their honor like you're a Paladin of the "Insert Brand Name Here" Order for Righteousness because you are not.
There is a huge difference between being a fan and being a raving, idiotic fanboy. There is a difference between having a favorite console or game company and mindless, obviously biased bickering over who does and does not suck before consoles even come out.
And all of this purely so that you can claim that your favorite console "owns the universe" or whatever the hell.
The point is, if you have something intelligent to say, say it and use some reasoning and logic. If you can't manage that, keep in mind that NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU DO AND DO NOT LIKE. If you think Sony pwns, write a poem about it, just don't post it here.

old battle rages
the sound of a game war comes
fanboys el oh el
Pince @ Jul 26th 2006 10:50PM
nice haiku
baberg @ Jul 26th 2006 11:22PM
Ok, I've got a question here:
I followed the Wii news from E3 primarily, as I'm a huge Nintendo fan. I have all three consoles this generation, but because of the extreme price of the X360 and especially the PS3 I'm planning to only get one of them this generation (at least, until they drop in price late in their lifecycles)
PS3 fans, convince me that I should go for a PS3 over the already-established online-rich Xbox 360. Emphasis on games please - having a Blu-ray DVD player means jack to me.
JJ @ Jul 26th 2006 11:25PM
Well that would be hard to do baberg... as the 360 is out and the PS3 isnt
Get whichever one you feel is best, or wait for the Wii and just plan from there
JJ @ Jul 26th 2006 11:26PM
Just forgot to add bab...no one can really sell you on a system... you either want it or you dont, just get the next gen system you feel you should get, decide which games you play the most and get the system that has or will have by your best guess, the most of those kinds of games to choose from.

-----------
why would you when you could just buy something cheaper and have more games, the other platform accept vga/dvi/component... capable of display 720p...
oh ya you thought ps3 games could play smooth on 1080p via HDMI...
sorry cant help...
yubastard @ Jul 27th 2006 1:29AM
1'm so 1337 that I pwn a PZ3 dev kit and make gamez with my 1337 skillz that only 1 can play and pwn at... err... yeah...
I'll be first in line to buy a PS3 the day it costs
Coroner @ Jul 27th 2006 2:41AM
Not bad. If they sell 3 times more of it, the can get the Numbers of 360 Dev-Kit out! ;)
Martin @ Jul 27th 2006 7:33AM
I think I saw about 9,949 in the stock room of my local walmart, does that mean that only 51 sold?
Sorry, had to!!! This could be good news for Sony, but it seems a little awkward being that how many developers actually can afford these at the moment, and how many developers there actually are in the world.
J B Cougar @ Jul 27th 2006 8:39AM
This, from the same PR department that said with a straight face "we have outsold the DS with the PSP by 1 million units?"
More Sony logic, more Sony lies as far as I am concerned.
KawF @ Jul 27th 2006 11:16AM
This from the same company that said: No game for our system will ever require the hard-drive and all games are required to be 720p at least.
Oh, wait, that was some other company, can't remember which... I think it was the one that proclaimed the games would be like lucid dreams.
anakenobi @ Jul 27th 2006 3:37PM
Yep, Sony has cooked up some good news for their fanatical and extremists followers. They sure are eating up that news on their hands and knees.
It's funny how the sonyfanbots seem to forget that Sony is the same company that made up critics reviews for their movies, used technology without paying for it/or just copying it (thus getting sued over it) and made faulty hardware that consumers have to replace every six months (like Shinji Mikami famously claimed).
But hey, the sonyfanbots need good news every now and then.... let then enjoy this one for once. Because come november, they'll get the biggest screwing of their entire virginal lives. ($600 a pop)
JJ @ Jul 27th 2006 7:26PM
That's right...because NO business ANYWHERE in the world ever embellishes facts or trumps up their items to be better than they are.
Sony is at fault for all the wrongs in the world =p.
Give it up, this whole fanboy argument just makes yourself look like even more of a fanboy because you have to bring up things that have no bearing on the article at hand. I mean that's like arguing the whole toy story graphics sony thing, at the spiderman 2 premiere. Its sony so it must be garbage right?
Do yourself a favor...stop. Do i like some companies more than others? Sure, I prefer nintendo over sony and sony over MS, but does that stop me from enjoying allt heir systems? Not in the least. Be gamers people..not fanboys.
