Shouldn't CNET edit this list? This is incorrect already.

Mother 3 is out in Japan. We've only gotten 1 of them anyway here, so it's never been like we should expect to be catered to for Mother games.

Prey is out too.

And if YOU'RE going to mark PS3 as not being Vaporware, I say the same goes for Zelda. At least we know Zelda will be out. We know why it was delayed, and thus doesn't live in the ether of the more notable pieces of vaporware.

Wasn't Ghost killed off by Blizzard?

Not sure what makes the PS3 vaporware and not the Wii. I'd say they both have a solid 100% chance of coming out, unlike the Phantom.

Team Fortress 2 is coming out with Episode 2, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is coming out, it had a valid reason for being delayed, Playstation 3.. I don't even know how to respond to that one. Sam and Max Free Lance Police [the article spelled lance wrong] is never coming out, though they are coming out with episodic Sam and Max Games. Star Craft Ghost was canned, and Prey came out.

I can't comment on Earthbound64 / Mother since I know nothing about it, but I will give them S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Duke Nukem Forever.

PS3, Prey, and Team Fortress 2 do not belong on that list. Prey is out, and the PS3 and TF2 are coming out relatively soon. Good job CNET keep up the good work and you may catch up to the complete inaccuracy of Fox News.

I was one of the people chosen to beta test the Phantom years ago. But that was before that Bachus guy took over. Once he came into power, me, along with the other testers, never heard a thing about the beta again. Then they deleted the Infinium Labs forum, which was too bad. I was a moderator in it, and I quite enjoyed fending off the trolls :)

Whatabout the real vaporware, like Starfox 2, which only exists as a Japanese rom, slowly orbiting the internet's core? If they're going to put in twilight princess and prey, they really ought to have Too Human in there too, along with Kameo. Heck, even Halo 1 would work better.

#2, 3, 4, 5:
Give the article a read.

It's not the standard "2006's top vapourware" article.

It's what it says, a vapourware all-star list.

This just honours games that have done a commendable job as examples of vapourware. Yes, some of them are no longer vapourware, but all of them had heavy vapour-content at one time or another.

i.e.:
PS3: Back in March, when everyone was wondering how the hell they were going to make a Spring 2006 release date. The PS3 was complete vapour until E3 in May.

Prey, TF2: Both were vapour for multiple years.

Zelda: Similar to the PS3, the assumed release date came and went without a whisper from Nintendo. Pure vapour.

CNET blew it this time.

- Team Fortress 2 -> It is about to be released.

- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Why is Fallout 3 on the list? The Black Isle studios project was never even announced publicly and Bethesda's hardly mentioned anything about their version.

Uhhh, they're missing Vista....

@student
The whole point of the title "vaporware" is that it has been announced and then it justs keeps getting dropping further back. Fallout 3 hasn't been announced so it's not vaporware.

No matter how you slice it, PS3 is not vaporware. It did not make a solid appearance at E3 2005, but was there in 2006.

Do the math CNET, that's one single year.

I mean, if the PS3, why the hell isn't Vista even on the list (Windows is one of the largest gaming platforms)? That's been delayed multiple years.

Why the hell do I see Zelda everywhere considered as vaporware? The game is coming out on the console it was announced for, only about a year after it's original release period. The game was delayed, how is that vaporware? If it was delayed for several years and has an uncertain future I could see it, but it comes out in a few months!

Given that Mother 2 was released in Japan in 1994 in Japan, I think they'll want to edit their #11 to say Mother 3.

As much as I joke about Duke Nukem, everyone has to recognize that it still has one year left to go before it can officially tie Mother 3's sentence in development hell. So while DNF might be the most well-known vaporware game, Mother 3 is still the champ.

I wonder how Cnet gets off saying that Prey got 'lukewarm' reviews. Just because Gamespot gave it a 7.5 doesn't mean everyone else did as well.

I think Fallout should be ranked at 3 or 4, to be honest. It's been cancelled two times, already, so it's production cycle at Bethesda is the third cycle it goes through.

The first cycle was when they finished Fallout 2. Production for Fallout 3 started almost right away, using the good ol' Fallout 1 engine. But alas, because of financial problems, the title was cancelled.

The second and the only version we've actually seen something from was the Van Buren project which was cancelled due to Interplay's great management and their decision to keep releasing crappy console titles for the Xbox and PS2 in order to get some money. As we all know, it failed miserably and despite the fact that they got like 4 million dollars by selling the rights for Fallout 3, 4 and 5 to Bethesda, they're still short of money and cluelessly trying to figure out how the hell they're gonna manage to make that Fallout Online game.

Hopefully, Bethesda doesn't screw with the game because then I will be a really, really sad gamer. :(

Earthbound 64 is not Mother 2.

Earthbound for the SNES is Mother 2, so "Earthbound 64" would presumably be the US translation of Mother 3 for the N64 if it had ever made it out of Japan.

I chose those games because they had a big history of delays and questionable release. Prey's out, but its dev cycle (as long as DNF's if you count the hiatus) was insanely long. The PS3 will likely be out, but Sony's allegedly had problems getting enough useable cell processors and Blu-ray diodes, and only just started shipping out dev kits. Twilight Princess was originally GC-only, but has gone through a lot of changes and would be out by now if they weren't working it for the Wii.

Sorry if the top blurb seems sort of misleading. Space issues and whatnot.

And thanks for catching the Mother 3 typo. That was purely my mistake (though the slide DOES mention that it was finally released in Japan).

Also, they're not organized in any particular order. It's not meant to be a top 10 list, just a list of prominent games with a history of vaporware issues.

TF2 DOES belong on the list because I've been waiting for it for something like 8 years and it's STILL NOT OUT.

We've been waiting for the new Zelda game for what? 2 years? It was only delayed for a year. So why is it ranked higher on the list than a game we've been waiting for for almost a decade?

Same with Fallout 3. That should be ranked much higher than Zelda.

The PS3 doesn't need to be on the list. It was delayed by only a few months and we all knew it was going to happen. Did anybody really ever believe the PS3 would come out in the Spring? I mean come on, get real.

Prey is another game I waited for forever. I've been waiting for that game since before 1998. Since Quake 1 days.

But it's out now so why is it on the list?

Damn CNet do you know anything about games at all?

I don't understand why Vista isn't number one on that list. Sure, DNF has near no excuse for it's extreme delays, but their team was working with at most a multi million dollar budget. Whereas Microsoft has billions to throw away and an army of engineers.

Honestly, it's an idiotic article. Including Zelda and the PS3, already released/retooled games like Mother 3 and Prey, and cancelled games like StarCraft: Ghost and Sam & Max... these are hardly vaporware. Duke Nukem: Forever is vaporware.
