First Halo 360 faceplate coming in October

According to Bungie.net, the first official Halo faceplate will be available for purchase in October. No word on price or a specific date in October, but the plate looks pretty damn good -- at least better than the Gears of War faceplate some of us got at E3.
With this kind of thing, we're just a sucker for the clean and simplistic look. There's no doubt this will pretty much be a must have for hardcore Halo fans.

If I had horse I'd name it pretty because horses are pretty.
CYRiX @ Jul 29th 2006 5:57PM
I don't understand why I would change the front of my xbox 360 for 20 bucks that should be saved towards another game.
Night Elve @ Jul 29th 2006 5:58PM
@ 1.
There are market for everything, someone will buy it.
James Sorensen @ Jul 29th 2006 6:24PM
too bad changing faceplates makes the 360 look like a hodge podge pieced together hardware...
the gears of war one i kinda like a little more actually
Judd @ Jul 29th 2006 6:26PM
Someone?
I work at Gamestop and it's rare that we get a reserve for anything besides a game or system, but I swear to you we actually have at least one reserve of the Halo faceplate. You're right CYRiX it is retarted, but I guarantee you we will sell them.
Enigma @ Jul 29th 2006 6:28PM
There are a lot of people that just want to collect these as well. And never use them but collect them.
That one looks rather nice!
Zeromaru @ Jul 29th 2006 6:37PM
Holy crippity crap. With this kind of competition, how ever will the Wii sell?
Todd Rabanus @ Jul 29th 2006 6:43PM
i have an xbox 360 and i love the idea of being able to customize your box (the same way PC entusiasts love to have a PC that looks unique), but just being able to change the faceplate makes the system look odd because it doesn't match the white of the rest of the box. Microsoft should have made the entire console with snap off pieces so that the entire box could be customize. I would totally buy a Halo3 kit for the whole machine for $50.
Just my thoughts. but i would buy an all chrome faceplate juyst for the bling, bling effect
Andrew @ Jul 29th 2006 7:07PM
^^^^ That's a wonderful idea Todd, except that then the console would feel more like a X-Boy 1080 that you buy at the mexican thrift store. Seriously though, I like the idea of customizing, but I fucking hate how completely inflated all the stuff is. $20? My ass. I'ma get a can of spray paint, some good stencil paper, and make me one badass case with that $20.
Ethan @ Jul 29th 2006 7:08PM
@ todd, or they could just have a faceplate, and some stickers that mathch to put along the sides.
Killer_Twinkie @ Jul 29th 2006 7:11PM
I will buy one but I doubt I will actually put it on. I have started collecting faceplates from games so I will be getting it, plus its Halo.
Demi @ Jul 29th 2006 7:13PM
Actually, on Kotaku and Xbox360Fanboy, they've listed the
official dateas
October 24th.
loublack @ Jul 29th 2006 7:15PM
I like the face plate, but i think keeping the 360 all white just looks better
Fischman @ Jul 29th 2006 7:22PM
Should this even be regarded as newsworthy...?
marcin @ Jul 29th 2006 7:23PM
i actually like faceplates as long as theyre unique.
i have the pgr3, zero hour, and woody faceplates and i like them all.
gozer @ Jul 29th 2006 7:25PM
"13. Should this even be regarded as newsworthy...?"
no, but it's definately bloggable.
jeman @ Jul 29th 2006 7:46PM
Faceplates are cool but I wish there were stickers or something to custimize the sides of the xbox 360 as well so it look better. Blue on the front and white on the sides is kinda blah after a while.
rocko @ Jul 29th 2006 8:04PM
I just feel bad for all the people who buy this that have vertical-standing Xbox 360's
Lee @ Jul 29th 2006 8:08PM
Faceplates should be done so that they blend into the rest of the 360. Have effects/logos/pictures, but make them fade to white around the edges, so like someone said, it doesn't look like it's been made out of bric-a-brac.
Though hearing what someone else said, I may just spray it myself, bound to look better. I've always preferred clean colours to tacky decals, so might just make it black, that'll go with everything in my set up anyway.
That's one thing about the Wii/PS3, they look like they belong in a home theatre setup.
MusashiX2 @ Jul 29th 2006 8:19PM
"I just feel bad for all the people who buy this that have vertical-standing Xbox 360's"
lmao i was just thinking the same thing. stand the 360 up and master chief looks like he is falling.
i agree with the idea of the side panels being replaceable, whats wrong with that? if you want skins to put on your 360 check places like divineo.com or decalgirl.com. i do not like the stock 360 look at all, so i layed down some extra bones for this puppy http://www.teamxtender.com/news/uploads/X-360GREEN.jpg because the words "voided warranty" have no effect on me.
and btw, you can not compare pc modding to xbox faceplates. one takes blood, sweat, tears, and sometimes burnt flesh while the other is pop this plastic piece off, pop this one back on. M$ got the idea of customization from modders and they try to make money off of it. pisses me off a bit.
Ultimatallica @ Jul 29th 2006 8:55PM
Got the idea from modders? Christ, it's just changing the look without having to buy LE consoles, something pretty much everyone wanted. Don't have a frikken heart attack over it.
Oh and PS, MY CONSOLE IS VERTICLE. And why is it the chief from Halo 2? Come on, what was the reasoning behind that?
LOKIOLR @ Jul 29th 2006 8:57PM
That isn't the only faceplate coming soon. There's a Forza 2 plate coming out November 15th and a Viva Pinata plate coming out November 8th. Both for $19.99.

Hiro Protagonist @ Jul 29th 2006 11:22PM
I remember Microsoft saying that Sony's PS3 would meet Halo 3 when it launched or something...
Perhaps they meant the faceplate instead? I'm pretty sure it's just as good.
Superman @ Jul 29th 2006 11:36PM
Jesus Chirst, what are Joystiq smoking? This Halo faceplate is clean and simplistic? WTF! They should really grow some sense of style if you would actually deface your system and have a techno coloured faceplate in a room with your best electronics.
kevin @ Jul 30th 2006 12:04AM
Why? Why put a halo2 MC with an SMG on the 360. WE all should wait when they release a halo3 version.
Fischsticks @ Jul 30th 2006 12:41AM
i'd really like a white faceplate like the stock one except with like a small geo wars scene on it
that be pretty sweet
Rare Hare @ Jul 30th 2006 1:00AM
I think that perhaps almost everyone commenting on this post has been smacked with a stupid stick.
"I just feel bad for all the people who buy this that have vertical-standing Xbox 360's"
Yeah... because you can't lay the console horizontally or anything. Whatever will those people do?
"and btw, you can not compare pc modding to xbox faceplates. one takes blood, sweat, tears, and sometimes burnt flesh while the other is pop this plastic piece off, pop this one back on."
I'm pretty sure you just DID compare them.
"And why is it the chief from Halo 2? Come on, what was the reasoning behind that?"
I don't really know what makes you people think that the Master Chief model used on this face plate is from Halo 2. And even if it were, it's not like he changed armor or anything.
"When are they gonna make a Zelda faceplate?"
Holy crap I hope that was intended to be humorous.
"Though hearing what someone else said, I may just spray it myself, bound to look better. I've always preferred clean colours to tacky decals, so might just make it black, that'll go with everything in my set up anyway."
Are you seriously talking about just spray-painting your Xbox 360?
CYRiX @ Jul 30th 2006 1:21AM
I figured out the only reason anyone would buy one of this. When they're clearanced (sp) for 99 cents.

I can really see what MS tried to do and everything ;)
...however, as others have said, original is best (WHITE) or at least the whole console one colour (Like the chrome kits you can get etc).
The faceplates are cool and all but they just make the console look scruffy and are a little bit pointless. Better would have been a sub elememnt of the face plate (say the DVD tray cover) being inerchangeable. You couldn't get much on it but at least it doesn't make your console look like frankenbox. ;)
And frankly, the mods you can do to the box (including all the change of LED colours/Lights and controller mods) are a far more individual / creative way of expressing your "tastes" than these snappy snap ons, though again, I personally will keep it as nature intended, white and pure! :)

"I don't really know what makes you people think that the Master Chief model used on this face plate is from Halo 2. And even if it were, it's not like he changed armor or anything."
First of all that's a well known pose from Halo 2 advertising. In fact it's the exact same picture.
Scondly, he's holding duel SMGs.
Thirdly, there WERE changes to the armor, and if you knew what they were you can easily notice that this is the Halo 2 armor. Plus it just flat out doesn't look as good.
Sami @ Jul 30th 2006 10:13AM
Wow, that's ugly. The dark blue is very bland and Master Chief just seems tacked on in there. And people are willing to pay for this?
Blog The Internet @ Jul 30th 2006 11:02AM
That faceplate is way cool! I am sure that you can count on a big price tag for this item! Either way, people will still purchase it. I am anxious to play Halo 3... Very nice site BTW, subscribing to your feed and linking back to a few of your articles.
MusashiX2 @ Jul 30th 2006 11:03AM
"Yeah... because you can't lay the console horizontally or anything. Whatever will those people do?"
some ppl have their setups so that the xbox is standing, and thats the only way itll fit into their entertainment center. i have mine standing on the same desk i use for the computer, and i have it standing to save space on the desk. just a couple examples of ppl who wont change their whole layout for a stupid $20 piece of plastic.
"I'm pretty sure you just DID compare them." [in regards to what i said about PC modding versus the faceplates]
ummm, do you understand the english language? i didnt compare them, i contrasted them. i augmented my point by showing that they are not the same what-so-ever. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=contrast
btw, i did not realize till just now that those things cost $20. that is rediculous! you realize they prolly cost like 75 cents to make? its a friggin little piece of molded plastic that gets painted! super rip off, go add $20 to that and you can get an XCM full case replacement.
any case on http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/search.html?id=yRT4jHtv >>>>>>>>> any faceplate

Looks simply lovely - winder how long it will take to copy this design and ship it from china. Maybe the copy will beat the original to the market.
Ultimatallica @ Jul 30th 2006 11:19AM
I don't understand what you people have against this stuff. You'd rather them not make them, like last gen? So people that actually want one won't be able to get them because you..... well I just don't see how you'd gain from that at all. You're just being selfish, for no reason.
Ubersnuber @ Jul 30th 2006 11:36AM

Becuz ppl who pay 20$ expect that little piece of plastic to at least fit the rest of the box.
may sound weird to you, but many of us have that opinion
It will probably sell though..some people pay for dirty underwear.

want a new case? here ya go...
http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/2,212.htm
I bought the crystal clear one, and it looks great. These kits come with instructions and a special tool to help you take apart the original XBOX 360 case, which goes like some sort of snap together model or something.
Anyways...the only thing these cases DON'T come with, happens to be the only thing about my 360 I can't stand....the DVD drive bezel...why in god's name did it have to be chrome? Chrome is most likely the lamest color of all especially for a game console. Just because the guys on Pimp My Ride like the color doesn't mean gamers will. Chrome goes on cars and Bikes, not electronics. I'm seriously contemplating buying a plain white bezel like the one that comes on the core system from llama.com to replace it and then just paint it black or some other color that matched the faceplate I have at the moment. Chrome=Yuck.
P.Femm @ Jul 30th 2006 12:31PM
I used to think the 360 looked super clean just white... i thought that the face plates were cool but i would never use them....
a friend bought my husband a faceplate. we put it on and it really grew on me.. it fits and it's sexy.. lol... When i got my own 360 i bought the customizable faceplate from nyko and made my own ... l-o-v-e it... i don't know if i'll put the halo one on my xbox but i'll definitely purchase it.
Demi @ Jul 30th 2006 12:33PM
People, stop bitching.
You don't like it, don't buy it.
But this post has been spammed with people saying how stupid it is.
And thats just dumb.
But Rare Hare, I still thought that was pretty funny.
P.Femm @ Jul 30th 2006 1:34PM
To #39 MusashiX2
you, as well as the rest of the world, need to have a better understanding of the distribution and manufacturing process... first you have the design company who creates a product (contrary to popular belief those "designers" and "creaters" like getting paid for their work) so you add add design cost, then add in manufacturing costs, add distribution costs, add wholesaler costs, add end sellers costs.*and shipping/handling costs for each step*. so in it's simplest form there are 5 MONEYMAKING businesses that a product goes through before hitting your videogame accessory shelves.. for each of those 5 stops you add probably $1 - $4... each time the product is exchanged it is actually being purchased.. companies don't just haul stuff around for free especially with gas prices these days... (also there are probably more than 5 exchanges depending on who is the end buyer) so.. when you say it's a rip off you're not taking in the whole picture... you sound like an intelligent guy... and you should know that products don't travel straight from manufacturer to sales floor...
I have no problem buying a product that is available...
We can choose to buy it or we can choose NOT to buy it.. We have that choice because the products ARE available...
btw.. if you're going to cite dictionary.com you should at the very least spell "rediculous" correctly.
Lee @ Jul 30th 2006 4:23PM
Rare Hare, why not spray my 360? I think it's uglier than the Xbox! I was never a fan of the concave design, makes the edges look fat, and they say black is slimming, so I figure why the hell not. =P
Though looking at some of the replacement cases might just invest in one of those, it just stands out against virtually every component I have plugged in. Though still, like some guy said, the DVD bezel looks awful.
Always bet on black.
MusashiX2 @ Jul 30th 2006 11:52PM
"btw.. if you're going to cite dictionary.com you should at the very least spell "rediculous" correctly."
lol PWNED! but thanks for looking past the fact that i dont care much for proper grammar when i type and seeing that i have some fragment of a brain. yeah, i get that theres a large process to selling an item and i was kinda exaggerating the price. that would be the price of just the plastic itself. but still you gotta admit that $20 is prolly more expensive than it could have been.
