Finally! E3 is a trade show, but it has become impossible to do any kind of real coverage because of the huge consumer presence. There are plenty of oppertunities during the year for companies to get the consumer side of things involved. But as an industry event, it just diluted E3 and made it pointless to attend, especially from the pov of specialist press. Sure, gamers should also see the goods, but the press shave a job to do. Streamlining E3 into a more serious press event would make a big difference. No more fanboys to elbow through (theoretically).

To those who make this argument that E3 is an "Industry Only" event that should only cater to execs & media personnel:

None of you would have a **JOB** if it wasn't for the GAME *FAN*.
This event has become the Mecca of the gaming community & those complaining of cosplay & fans roaming the halls miss the point.

Shows like these STRENGTHEN the bond between the gameplayers & the gamemakers.
It builds excitement for the products the makers put out & signal that the players enjoy being a gamer.

It's like the Super Bowl or the World Series or the World Cup of gaming. That centralized place where EVERYBODY on both sides gets to show off a little bit & let their hair down.

The fun of it all. A festival. It's like many people have said: Christmas to gaming.

It's NEVER gonna go back to being "just a business show" because this show has come to represent these things to the gaming community. A gaming festival not a JUST a business show.

There are PLENTY of shows & events where things can be more soberly done & subdued but not E3.
It's big like that for a reason.
And that reason is to make people EXCITED about what the game companies put out.

Don't blame poor coverage by the media on E3. That's the media's fault. Everyone on that floor takes home a memory of what they experienced at that show.
A small developer gets some notice he would otherwise have to fight & scratch for from passers-by on the floor who like that quirky little game he made.
They remember this game & when it comes out they spread the good word about it...word-of-mouth.

If they have to work on the unruly behavior of some fans, so be it. But to say that this event should not have ANY input by the general public who MADE you who you are today is nothing less than snobbery & elitism.

No, Virginia. E3 is NO LONGER **JUST** an "Industry Only" event. And you should be thankful that it's not.
Because in the end, the fans make the industry.

Never made it myself, but from all that friends who have been there have told me, the show has gone downhill. Less actual information, more people who have no real right to be there getting in. I'm just as glad if this is true.

"this will now keep Joe Schmoe that just works at an EB on the weekends from taking up time, space, and in turn money."

Uh, we take up time, space and money? How? We don't get free passes to E3 or free trips. If we end up going, which I did 3 years ago, it's on our own dime. Ass. Work on the fat fanboys first, then complain about us retail people.

It's just being shut down to the public, the gaming industry will still compete with each other, just not in an over-the-top flashy way. This means they will be able to put more money into games and consoles instead of wasting it on a fucking stage that most people don't care about. Personally, I'm glad that E3 is being shut down to the public, it means that developers will spend less time worrying about how to impress the idiotic masses at E3 and more time figuring out how to make the games I play better.

Well, judging by reports elsewhere that the show is just downsizing, it ought to be a really good thing.

It's funny to me how most of the people complaining haven't been to the show. I've been to six now. And the way I've described it for years is that it's never as good as you imagined, and better than your wildest dreams.

First, the latter part. There's no greater thrill than to walk in and just see all the games coming out in the coming year. I got to be one of the first to play Metroid Prime 3 - how freaking cool is that? I loved meeting people behind the games. The swag was just a cherry on top.

But for the first part... face it, E3 is becoming a joke. People are just throwing awards on games that aren't playable at all. Spore is my #1 there, but it happens all over. More and more, companies only show off their mediocre games but don't let you get a crack at the really good ones (oh, who cares if Metal Gear Solid 4 is still only video, I can play Shaolin Shodown on the PSP someone broke!).

The pinnacle of the absurdity both this year and last year was Tecmo's booth. Tecmo, both this year and last, decided that they didn't need to parade any games out, and instead just had scantily-clad women walk about on a stage. If I wanted that, I have an Internet that's quite capable of delivering that to me in the comfort of my own home, thank you very much. I actually felt bad for their neighbors - I know I'm not the only one who gave that part of the show a wide berth to avoid the flock of fanboys who couldn't figure out how to look up pr0n on Google.

And that's not even getting into people just bumming passes off of others and sneaking in. Invariably, they're the worst at hogging machines and creating huge, slow-moving lines.

Also, booths that are built to cause traffic jams and thus the illusion of constant action (like Nintendo's booth) need to be banned. As much as I liked quite a bit in their booth this year, I hated going in for fear of my life.

To be quite honest, E3 has been broken for a bit. The event needs slimming, stricter rules need to come into play (and those that exist need to be better enforced), and companies that are wasting space (either all of it like Tecmo or some of it like Nintendo) need to be forced into having both games and sensible layouts.

Not all too surprising. Only in the past year or two has the E3 brought a fair amount of media attention but I suppose it's not necessary when the focus is on one particular industry and three major companies. We will probably start to see the likely single company conventions with more of a focus on the consumer which is better for the common gamer who couldn't get into e3 anyway. We may (but are less likely) to also see smaller conventions sponsored by game outlets and/or game-blogs (how about Joystiq & EBgames producing a convention?) if they feel there's a definite void to fill.
But yes as a trade show, e3 wasn't all that necissary... at least not for the major players.

This is ridiculous. Quite possibly the greatest Electronic show ever is gonna get cancelled becuase of a small return? WHAT? How about this. Charge $50 to $100 a day to regular everyday people and see how small of a return you get from that. Offer smaller vendors and production companies tables to display there "underground games" and see how many will come flocking and how much they're willing to spend. Sure, I understand having something specific for the Elite members of the gaming society, but why make it an exclusive event all weekend. How about having exclusive events wednesday and thursday, and allowing general admission for the rest of the weekend. Through in a HUGE party friday and/or saturday night, and I gaurantee that you'll have returns that could possibly completely fund the event for the following year!

47. I think you probably nailed the problem, but it goes far from a vendetta, publishers like Sony and MS expent millions in cash to get their products shown at E3 only to get shadowed by the new nintendo controller and people who wanted to test it. not good.

Besides the E3 is supposed to be a media event why was the "media" not interested in seing important new products from major companies, but wanted to play with the Wii instead? maybe "non media" audiance has got too high at e3 or Maybe 3 days is not enough time to show all the game industry has to offer any more? is months since E3 and Im still getting unheard info from it.

I doubt E3 will "dissapear" though, it will probably just be segmented: Sony Nintendo and MS will each get a 3-4 day showing Small developers and PC devs will have to settle with the GDC and the quakecon, it makes sense.

I think this should be good. Right now, the video game industry is starting to iitate the music industry in that they sell a couple 3 cent peices of plastic, with data on it worth maybe 10 bucks, with a manual (sometimes)andpackage it in a flimsy cardboard box (or hard plastic brittle box) and sell it for $49.99. That's armed robbery in y opinion. Perhaps with less emphasis on spending a crapload of money just to wow folk at E3, they can reduce the price of the game, and I won't be pirateing their junk.

(ok, this came out long... I guess I got inspired :P )

Some of us older gamers thought that, when Sony entered the game (pun intended), games were becoming less and less "for gamers" and the industry has kept getting that way ever since. Until now there was a good split of focus left for gamers. We are at a point were fewer and fewer commercials even show what a game looks like, which is what we gamers actually look for in marketing and advertising!

On my opinion it was getting better before it got worst. I though there were some quality "gamers" games coming out lately (GOW, RE4, NG, etc.) but after seeing some of the new games next-gen, I dont think the same. Games are becoming so dumb out and with just such emptiness to them is not funny, and include characters you dont even care about, not even for a single sequel... but that is just my opinion, and why I think what is next.

Its seems now the big-bad-gaming-show is gone... the show gamers really waited for, news from the latest in gaming would spew out of every media and there were some of us who got that tingly sensation of reading EVERY SINGLE NEWS ABOUT IT!... You know who you are now... :)

Game companies have many other venues to get to the mainstream gamer. Don’t get me wrong I know E3 was geared towards mainstream to begin with; I mean what TV show didn’t at least mention the industry biggest show!? But there is nothing else besides GDC that caters to gamers, and even then GDC is geared more towards developers.

Well with E3 gone, what the heck are these companies doing for us gamers in terms of marketing?

Magazines, bah… We are probably too old to know that we dont want anything sent to me via actual mail anymore. Every company out there, stop it, now just stop... Now, send all those ads but just send them via spam... I will sure filter them out.

Internet ads? please! ... If have been playing games for this long, I probably know how to use computers and the internet. AdBlock baby...

Internet news sites like this?... mmm with all due respect to Joystiq.com… There is nothing any of these news sites could do by without the news avalange that E3 is, the sheer amount of games, the speculation, the new systems and their magical tech numbers that in the end don’t mean a thing... they will surely be missed.

If E3 doesn’t make news sites go crazy like head-less chickens, May will be the same as any other month and these news sites won't try to crown a game or company! Gamespot, EGM, Gamepro and others report on multiple consoles yet all know they have a favorite company, admit it, and we all LOVE to read how they rate each company and games for E3.

I can believe this industry will center 100% to the mainstream consumers and not even give us the light of day anymore but I knew this day would come, I don’t know if it is really today but it is closing up… and you know what, in all truth I see the oldest console maker of the three set up to take that “mainstream consumer” market all console makers should look for, Nintendo...

Nintendo can easily take this next-gen mainstream market with low prices, great innovation and easy and cheap development tools…And I add this at the end of my post, not because I am a fanboy (I own and play all 3 consoles), but because they are the only hardware maker left from when I became a gamer. I sure hope Nintendo kicks ass this Next-Gen, even if they are doing something very non-pro-gamer... just like the industry is doing by killing E3.

"If the ESA doesn't manage to get the big guys back on board, another organizer will step in within the next 18 months with a show that will take E3's crown as the king of gaming trade shows."

I think that sums it up best. Remember when the CES was the big annual video game show?

Give it a couple years and some other game show will step in to fill the void. This is a tempest in a teapot.

I aggree with #159, there will be another game show that would take E3's place. The show i'd rather see take E3's place would be the GDC, where the developers actually talk about their games.

And you know your old whe you can actually remember the time when CES was the be-all-end-all for the gaming industry.

As soon as I heard about the restrictions placed on the Booth Babe costumes for the last show, I knew the convention was doomed.

The video game industry can, obviously, withstand bad games, buggy games, serialized rip-off games based on old successes, and an endless stream of virtually identical FPSs, MMORPGs, and RTSs, but when they went after the Booth Babes, all was lost.

Let this be a lesson for us all.

Lucas...quit your whining. E3 _IS_ an *industry only* event. Plus there are MORE then just "execs" and the media the show. The people who actually MAKE the games are at the show as well b/c a lot of the times, they have to take shifts to demo their game.

Yea we wouldn't have our jobs if it wasn't for the fans (I work in the industry) but that doesnt mean you get to attend the same events as us.

The whole point of E3 is to show off what the industry has been working on, to see what the new "trends" are, to allow middleware companies such as Havok, GameSpy, Aegia, etc. to see what is out there and to see if they can help those titles do something that wasn't originally planned.

People have very short memories. They did almost the exact same thing when the big companies pulled out of CES. Remember CES? Freezing my ass off walking between pavilions in the January Las Vegas wind? Sure, there was E3 hot on its heels, but they had it in Chicago (?!) and couldn't keep their dates or locations straight for a while.

There will be another tradeshow that will take up the slack, don't worry. There's still ECTS, TGS and others - and who knows, maybe everyone will head back to CES.

Fanboys whining = funny.
