John, the "knowing Sony has done good" was talking about innovations, not just general good. Should have been more specific.

And I know they're developed by Konami, but both games use the couple of Sony "innovations" I've actually come up with, the eyetoy and pressure sensitive buttons. You'll know if you've tried to play Twin Snakes how that engine is so designed around the PS2 controller.

"Must not be too worthwhile to many others either, since no one is rushing to copy any Sony 'innovations'."

In fact, MS has already copied the PS2's pressure sensitive buttons, as well as intending to release an "eyetoy killer" for the 360 later this year (or is it next year?).

A lot of Sony's contributions haven't been completely new interfaces, but subtle tweaking of hardware. Like the USB ports/built in optical out/IR port/DVD playback. Nothing revolutionary, but just making consoles more all-round machines, and MS has already taken almost all of those and implemented them in their 360.

But even in terms of games, especially if you enjoy playing console FPS, Groove/Antigrav, or racers on the Xbox/PS2, I think Sony has done enough not to be criticised too much.

Greg, damn man, learn to use the RETURN key.

Erm, well there's no arguing with that. I'll just stamp you with a "beyond help" and move on with my life.

you guys show me something innovative on the copy cat ps3 that involves gaming.

not a high def dvd player that requires a bunch of other sh1t to be able to see a better screen.

Also, give me a clip where some idiot from sony gives props to microsoft and nintendo for what they copied.

Sony had a good run, but they've become so damn smug that they think their name alone will hold up and win the damn consoles race. So you fanboys will make the numbers look nice in the beginning, but it just won't last. It's all written there in black and white, you can't say you can't assume about the future of these consoles, especially when all that is heard on these blogs are everyone's buying a wii and 360, only rich fanboys are purchasin a ps3, and that's fact.

but the argument comes up, "on these blogs", and there are people who purchase consoles that don't write blogs, and don't type in forums, but guess what? The early adopters do. The people who sat out all night for a 360 do. the people who camped for the ds do. That's a fact.

The ps3 will sell, just not as good as xbox 360 and the nintendo wii.

Okay, Lee. M$ has indeed copied a thing or two from Sony. But IMO they're pretty insignificant things. I mean, USB ports?!? Cmon...

As for xbox , all Ive heard is that the camera is for video chatting, I havent heard anything whereas the camera would affect gameplay. I honestly haven't actually TRIED to find that info, but Ive just never heard it.

I just feel that Sony is waaaay too content with the 'status quo'. This is not only bad for them, but bad for the industry as a whole, since they are the current market share leader. Over saturating the market with cookie-cutter games that don't (ok... VERY RARELY) offer any innovation could lead to a repeat of the video game crash in 1984.

There needs to be a change, a massive change for the industry to continue to grow at best, and to not completely collapse - at worse. A 'disruption', if you will.

John, don't pick out the most pathetic thing they copied. Their new camera was showing off eyetoy functionality at one of the game shows, can't remember which. The pressure sensitive buttons were copied straight off the bat, too.

Sony's aim isn't to further the games industry, it's to integrate it with your home theatre set up. Nintendo's is to change how we play games. Microsoft's is to make online play seamless.

And they've all been doing that, and they've all been taking from the others what they themselves have failed to do. Trust me, this is a healthy industry.

And whilst the market may seem oversaturated with bad games, it always has been, there have been awful games for all systems, and there'll be awful games for the Wii too.

But the hypemachines ensure that the cookiecutter crap you refer to haven't saturated the market. The big games get the big recognition. The cookiecutter games are quickly forgotten, and aren't killing the industry. They've been around for a long time. Each year each console (usually) sees a number of big and/or innovative titles, and each year they sell well.

Uchendu Nwachukwu - "Sony's motto seems to be 'anything they [Microsoft] can do, we can do better.'"

I completely disagree.

I think Sony's motto seems to be "Anything they (Microsoft & Nintendo) can do, we can steal, change the name of, then swear blindly that we thought of the idea first."

*yawn*

Here is the format of every single Joystiq post:
A. We like nostalgic XBLA games (Yes, SFII is great, we GET IT)
B. Drooling over something random about the Wii, like....3 on 3 Mario Hoops? What, did the indepth article about Mario Texas Hold'em and Princess Peach's Rock-Paper-Scissors Challenge 2 not come through?
C. Sony says/does anything...LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW CRAZY WE THINK THEY ARE.

There are retarded things Sony has done that deserve mocking. But you can only say "way to sacrifice your gaming plans to your electronics BR division" so many times. So crap like this post happens. Sure, the term entitlements is a dumb word. But how could anyone slight Sony for including this feature? Would anyone prefer they not do it? After the very first online game, should every future game/console have avoided online play for good?

Meanwhile, no one will ever breath a negative word about the DS or the Wii. None.at.all. Where's the balance here? The writing of the site would improve a great deal if the authors made a slight effort to go beyond their personal interests. No one knows which yet-to-be-released console is "better." Having a more diverse set of opinions would make the resulting conversations much more interesting.

It all started with Space War. Everything after has copied (If you think like alot of you guys idiotic theories anyway).

Points:-

Xerox invented GUI, not Apple, not MS.

Nintendo copied Atari but made alot of things better, everyone else copied Nintendo, and sometimes make better (Sony Playstation), sometimes make worse (Atari Jaguar).

Nintendo's only BIG claims are with Controllers, nothing much else. They don't win many if any awards for console innovations, if anything they couldn't give up the older tech (Carts), and it seems they continue that trend now with hardware (Wii = Gamecube on steroids for 4 to 5 times the price)

Dual Shock was infact standard with PS1 by 1998. Sony released an Dual analogue controller in 1997 without rumble.. soon after Dualshock came out and was standard. Ape escape was the first game to require it. what was annoying at the time was that it wasnt compatible with Namcos Negcon analogue "standard". So older analogue games didnt work with dualshock.

In many ways Nintendo could very well have copied Segas Fishing rod controller. Did anyone try playing Soul Calibur on DC with the fishing rod? Not how it was intended, but it was incredibly funny to be able to swing the swords with the rod. Someone ant Nintendo MUST have seen that and had an idea....

Number of sold units didn't kill Sega, The DC was selling as good as, if not better (especially in Japan) as the Xbox 360 is now... Sega killed Sega. Simple. Sony were VERY lucky that Sega went when they did though.

The Xbox 360 pad is the best one out there right now and still will be when Wii and PS3 launch.

The PS3 WILL cater for the masses eventually. It wont be $600 forever. Sony used the same tactics for PS2 and PS1. Mad fanboys first, then the mildy rich, then the people who originally give Sony flack for being shit (Looking at most of you people) then eventually the rest of the world that have a life and don't spend most of it trying to get star ratings on here.

Sony have copied many many things from all sorts of sources. What they are good at is making them better (Typical Japanese to be honest) and marketing them CORRECTLY and at the RIGHT TIME. But recently the innovation for Sony comes from Europe, London to be exact.... The London Studio with Eyetoy, Singstar and Buzz. Attracting the exact customers to PS2 that Nintendo want with Wii. And have been for the last 2 years. MS and Nintendo will surely copy these ideas one day. MS have started with the Vision camera.

No matter how much crap KK and the gang speak its never stopped the Playstation being the most sucessful console brand EVER. KK has always spoke madness, I find it quite amusing and in some ways charming, he's quite an eccentric guy that has deep vision. He's also Japanese and cant speak English very well. Most Standard Japanese language gets translated like they are talking coo coo. "Welcome to use you new amazing farmer product, we hope it brings many to you happy hours of the joy" thats a common opening line in an Asian written PC motherboard manual.

The comapny that will be number 1 wont ever be Nintendo. They had their day. Microsoft are the next to be. They wont stop till they are. Even if it takes 20 years. Manupulation (starting with little blogs like this) and money, thats all they need. The Xbox under any other comapny would have sinked and died faster than Atari with the Jaguar judging by the amount of money they have lost.

And lastly, I find it amazing how so much can come out in a topic originally semi criticising Sony (Once again) for something as small as a RUMOUR about a possible name for their new Achievement system. WOW. If commission is made on the amount of activity generated by a post then you Chris Grant are a lucky, lucky guy.

Now I know why you are all bashing Sony so much ;) Clever and priceless.

Alright, my 2 cents:

Someone mentioned other rip-offs, and they were wrong. The BF2 reference is bull, because by that time special medals were already being used by other games, Halo 2 being one of them. Award systems aren't new, and nobody really cares who started using them anyway.

Second, the Wii-mote idea is, if anything, something Nintendo invented with the tracking of the Powerglove. If the 6D movement tracking thing is what's ripped off, then I'd say the P5 Glove and various point-mice are better comparisons than the Dreamcast fishing rod controller, which only used a mercury sensor to check the tilt of the controller.

Last, am I the only one here that thinks Microsoft should sue Sony yen-less over IP infringement? Using a similar service is fine, as long as there are discernable differences in the end product. But Sony feels the need not only to copy the Live! system exactly, but to even rip off the Live! labels, thinking a thesaurus will make them look like they have an original product.

I don't know about how things work in Sony-land, but in my world that falls under IP rights infringement. They literally are taking someone else's work and slapping new names on it to try and hide their crime. The only way that would be legal is if the Big M liscenced out the rights to the Live! service, which would never happen.
