Most corporations are clumsy, not just Sony. EA isn't exactly the model for the gaming industry. I also still haven't gotten my money back for True Crime NYC...talk about clumsy game companies...

It's really sad though.

Maye the gaming industry needs more XBL achievements, or um entitlements.

"An event that focused the scattershot attention of the gaming public on on one grand, glowing spectacle and gave us something to argue about and pick apart for the rest of the year."

on on? I think someone made a little mistake

@1, pointing out spelling and grammatical errors is lame, go to the grammar forums for that. joystiq and the fanboy sites get too much negative feedback for posts not being "newsworthy" (you read it didnt you?) and for typos (who doesnt do it). Cut them some slack, they are just trying to pump out content to satisfy out unending appetite.

On a lighter note, in typical fanboy style "Sony Killed E3!", Classic!

Actually, Sony did kill E3, along with EA.

Check my site for details, it's not that hard to see.

I'm sure the reception Sony received after the last E3 didn't endear them any further to the event, but it's doubtful that Sony alone had the power to pull the plug. Bottom line is the big boys (read Nintendo, Microsoft, EA, as well as Sony) in the industry got tired of the effort and expense of the yearly one-upsmanship.

The event was a lot of fun for us, but a real headache for them.

"The Rev", there is a "Corrections?" link to the right (under "Send us new tips") that is much more appropriate than the comments section.

"doc P", the editors don't usually mind being corrected, as long as people aren't jerks about it. I know if I make an error, I want someone to let me know. When we get rushed, spell/grammer check is easy to forget.

I wonder how it felt for Sony to spend so much money on E3 presence only to be the most mocked company at the show. Back to the drawing board I guess; maybe they need a "based-on-actual-history giant enemy GOAT" that has multiple weak points for "ridiculous damage". Defeating said GIANT ENEMY GOAT nets the player a 300 point "entitlement".

The reason why E3 is being cancelled is because of the fact that there are a lot of major developers withdrawing from the show. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Sony is one of these companies! Only 5% of the people who attended the 2006 E3 said that Sony had the best show. 12% of the people said that Nintendo had the best show, and 83% of the people who attended E3 said that Microsoft had the best E3 show due to the amazing products at the show, combined with the way Microsoft allowed game demos, trailers, and videos to be downloaded with Xbox Live on the Xbox 360. The way that companies like Sony and Electronic Arts have decided not to attend E3 is similar to the way that Nintendo decided to stop showing things at the Tokyo Game Show. The big difference is that Sony decided not to attend because of marketing and publicity.

Ever since the E3, Sony has been ripped on by the media--and rightfully so! Sony did a terrible job at the 2006 E3. But just because a company like Sony doesn't want to attend doesn't mean the show should be cancelled for everyone. Oh well, the word on the street is that the Microsoft X06 show, which will be in Spain this year, is going to have Microsoft showing off a LOT of new games!

A single major developer pulling out of E3 CAN have a ripple effect. Imagine, for the sake of argument Sony pulled out of E307, now if you're developer for the PS3, you're wondering if you should appear at E3 to demonstrate your products. Maybe Sony was partially sponsering you in the past, or at least hosting your game. So maybe a semi imporant developer pulls out, causing other developers to rethink, wait a minute they're pulling out, should we stay?

Anyway, I think it's possible for the whole thing to partially collapse based on possible of a pull out.

Something obviously happened. The event, which was smaller this year than in past by about 10,000 attendees, decided to become almost irrelevant with only 5,000 invitees next year. I'm thinking only the most mainstream press will be invited. All others need not apply.

While it's good for the press attending, I'm not sure who else benefits. Certainly the consumer doesn't. The companies presenting don't generate anywhere near the buzz they would if lots of people attend.

So basically you now have a niche conference, which if I presented in the past I'd seriously rethink attending in the future. Because for me, I'd want to get the free press, buzz, word-of-mouth that is generated by having a sizable event. And if I were a company, I would think that I could accomplish the same thing this new conference will accomplish, simply by inviting the press to my headquarters for sneak peek of our development.
