Mortal Kombat Armageddon: character select screen

A Midway forums moderator has posted the official "kharacter" select screen for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The image features 62 character slots, excluding the two kreate-a-kombatant boxes (at the bottom corners of the top half). In addition, Blaze, Daegon, Meat, and Taven have been locked. And, if you look closely, you'll notice Chameleon has been added. See him?

Holy shit thats a lot of characters to choice, but it sounds good to me.

Just an FYI...
This screenshot is also located in the new Official Xbox Magazine (September issue) in the cover article about the game.

i just can't get into mortal kombat ever since it's been put into 3-D and they have weapons.. .
i miss the old side view mortal kombat fighting .. .
now those were good times.. . i don't care what you young whipper-snappers say!! !
Sinergy @ Jul 31st 2006 4:35PM
I agree with nsomneia. MK3 Ultimate at the arcade during high school lunch hour = wicked fun! :D
boots @ Jul 31st 2006 4:38PM
why is nobody excited about this? I really am. I loved the first MK games, and the latest. The only one I didn't like was MK4.
Anyway, I really hope this game is compatible with 360 and LIVE, unlike Deception (which was, and then stopped being... sort of).
dvnt @ Jul 31st 2006 4:40PM
@ 3
The OXM issue had a different select screen. It had a KAF icon where chameleon now is and two ? where the new KAF icons now are.
But yeah, MK:A is gonna rock. Nice to see it making the news.
Jonathan Cooper @ Jul 31st 2006 4:42PM
The last few mortal combats have been a dissapointment, it seems that this one will try to return it to some of the roots.

Looks a lot like Mokap.

62 characters. 62 CHARACTERS?!?
How different could they be, really? Good grief, if your selected character is obscurred by the character selection screen, either you need a new way to select your character or maybe you're just padding. If most of them use the same control scheme and same attacks, why not just make them different costumes of each other?
Oh, that's right...then you wouldn't have 62 characters to use as your dick measurement. Yeesh. Of course, I'd rather have Tekken: DR or any version of Soul Calibur any day of the week over MK, so I'm biased.
dvnt @ Jul 31st 2006 4:57PM
It has 62 characters because MK actually has an interesting story. The characters drive that story. That and MK has been around a bit longer than Tekken so it can amass such a roster. But let's not turn this into a fanboi war.
Also worthy of note is the new mini-game in Armageddon, Motor Kombat. Think Mario Kart with fatalities. Then there's the Kreate-A-Fighter mode and the Konquest mode using the Shaolin Monks engine. Awesome.
Exo @ Jul 31st 2006 5:04PM
Wizardru, you need to chill the fuck out dude.
the whole reason they are having all these characters is becasue the series creator wants to totally redo the franchise now that his partner is gone, so they are making one last regular one and putting all past characters in it.
Screw soul caliber, that game is a button masher, and tekken, well tekken is just gay. I dont like MK much either though
mykie @ Jul 31st 2006 5:08PM
dude, i still get confused as to which character to select from in the FIRST MK.
don't they know that massive selections like this just turn off new players? At least have them unlockable as you play if you've GOT to have 62 characters...
Few things are more overwhelming than popping several quarters into a new arcade machine and greeted with a character selection screen where you get to choose from 50+ characters that all look pretty much alike (to a new player), and you have like 5 seconds to choose.
Then it really doesn't matter you get your ass beat one way or another.
SuicideNinja @ Jul 31st 2006 5:18PM
"why is nobody excited about this?"
I'm excited.
"now those were good times.. . i don't care what you young whipper-snappers say!! !"
I concur, but I still like MK2 better. The "combo system" in MK3 was lame. Better yet, go back to Karate Champ, or Exploding Fist where there are no hand-fed combos or special moves. Those were the good days.
Anyway, I've never played Deception or MK4, but I liked Deadly Alliance sans it's horrendously difficult controls for the characters I liked.
This game's release will be a good day, and making my own character is a definite plus.
What I want to know, is if they are going to make more MK a la Shaolin Monks. That is my favorite Mortal Kombat game ever. But I think MKA is the last one.
Christian aka nsomneia @ Jul 31st 2006 5:19PM
exo .. . every fighter is a button masher .. . except for a game like fight night.. . but FN is bollocks anyways.. . i just depends on the person playing if they're a button masher or not .. .
I heart soul calibur .. .
Lobato @ Jul 31st 2006 5:26PM
Ok. I haven't followed mortal kombat in a long time. Who the hell is Chameleon?
Stick_Man @ Jul 31st 2006 5:38PM
UGHH. Again? Dial-a-combo is so pathetic. Why not just make it a one button game? that's all it needs. tone down the graphics and republish it on Atari 2600... same concept, same gameplay, less crap to sift through.
And dear god these games are always horribly unbalanced. The last one was terrible, especially the online mode.
I'll wait 3 months untill this one is in the bargin bin for 5 bucks like the last one... and I only got the last one because I was drunk at the time.
Exo @ Jul 31st 2006 5:38PM
Christian aka nsomneia,
when I say button masher, I mean its possibel to beat some ones ass just by button mashing. thats what the term button masher means.
yea you can mash buttons in other games, and other fighting games, but in most fighting games youd get your ass kicked easily if you could only button mash, and soul caliber is one of those games where you do not have to know a single move and you could still win., not exactly what you would call deep
Hugh Jass @ Jul 31st 2006 5:38PM
Hm, that's a lot of characters. Can't say I'm too excited about the choices, though ... many of them look similar, and most of them are just plain ugly!
Can't we get Ivy, Cassandra, and the other Namco cuties into this nasty game?
kevinski @ Jul 31st 2006 5:41PM
Chameleon was introduced in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. He basically just morphed into random male ninja characters constantly, though. Does he have his own original moves now?
Shaun @ Jul 31st 2006 5:51PM
What is your problem? Why are people complaining because a game has a lot more content, and therefore a lot more to choose from? You complain when you buy a game that has not enough to offer, not when you buy a game that has overloading content! You don't have to touch the extra NEW, exciting characters if you don't want to.
jeanbenetramsy @ Jul 31st 2006 5:53PM
4th row down third character to the right... ZOMBIE LIU KANG!

I grok that, but I've never really seen ANY fighter that has a story IN-GAME. A couple of lines of text and a cut-scene aren't really that much of a story to me, and I've yet to see a fighter that really has that much of one, unless it inherited it from an anime/manga/sci-fi series that inspired it. Mortal Kombat does have a pretty involved timeline...but that's all outside the game. Most of the character stories aren't actually in the game itself (or at least haven't been in the ones I've played).
My point is that looking at that list, I see a lot of what I would consider double-dipping. All fighters do this (Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, MK, DOA, etc.) but it seems excessive, here. Do you really need both Goro and Sheeva or Frost and Subzero? Do they really play that differently? I'm not familiar enough with recent MKs to know...but my experience in the past was that they really weren't very different at all, other than a different model.
mandarin @ Jul 31st 2006 6:19PM
Just the same guys who got rich from the original MK trying to get more money.
I miss the days when they had real guys on the game. Those martial arts guys in the gym in some gym which I cant remember. Johnny Cage was a karate instructor i think. Goro was... hmmm an action figure. The real Kung Lao was a martial artist/doctor.

unforgivenIII @ Jul 31st 2006 7:34PM
seriously guys, quit whining about how many characters there are, like someone already said the creators are killing off this story line and starting afresh and so they included all those characters to give each one's story an end. Although, like other fighting games, there realy isn't much of a story in-game, after beating the arcade mode with a character you'd often get a snippet of what happened and their ending, the thing with the last few MK games was that some of the endings conflicted so you'd have to wait til the next game to see how they worked it out. Well now all the character endings will (hopefully) be their final and true endings.
Barabas @ Jul 31st 2006 7:43PM

Haven't you played Deadly Alliance or Deception? Each of the characters have different moves based on real fighting styles. It's not like MK1-4 where the only unique moves where the special attacks.
The reason there is Frost and Sub-Zero and Goro and Sheeva is because the game is meant to tie up all the loose ends in the series. Every character in the Mortal Kombat universe will be given backstories which correctly mesh with the main story (even if they have to be retconned) and endings which will be considered canon so the series can start fresh next gen.
nc454 @ Jul 31st 2006 9:12PM
First off I can;t wait until this comes out. Secondly, it needs to be back compat with 360, and thirdly Kabal rules! (He is the guy with tiger hook swords from ult. MK3)

"its possibel to beat some ones ass just by button mashing."
Check out Kengo: Master of Bushido. It's an older PS2 sword fighting game, but damn it's great. A skilled player will school an average button masher EVERY TIME.

this is for the fans and judging by the number mk games there are a few was really looking forward to this game but then i go a 360 and also got screwed for backwards capabilty so i dont see this beening 360 friendly so i wont get it
Batzarro @ Aug 2nd 2006 10:24AM
Uh, I have Soul Calibur 2. I... respect Tekkens existence, even if it is irrelevant to me. But that doesn't mean I won't get MK:A(God and University payments permitting). And it's true: MKs from one to four had people going (punches forward many times)HYA!HYAHYA!HYAHYAHYAHYA! If you could stand that, having stryker and KAno share kicks won't kill you. And where were you complaining when Tekken brought that "Bring everyone together" one on PS2? At least some of the MK guys are new to 3d! And how similar are, King and Armor King? Ryu and Evil Ryu? Yoshimitsu and Mitsurugi?
Royall @ Aug 3rd 2006 10:30AM
I hope this game has Puzzle Kombat and Chess Kombat. It'll also be neat if it has all that unlockable garbage that Deception had.
Userbars @ Aug 4th 2006 9:43AM
I hope this is a 2d old style mortal kombat!
Jose Valencia @ Aug 9th 2006 12:58PM
The game looks great but hasn't anyone noticed that 3 characters in the Character Select Screen are missing??
Khameleon, Unmasked Sub-Zero, and Human Smoke.
Scorpion looks great but I wish they would have just left him the way he looks in MK Deception. it would be great if they had brought back the Well (Continue Scene) from MK4 and also included MK4 with the package.

I THINK AL U GUYS TALKING SHIT ABOUT MK ARMAGEDDON R TRIPPING CAUSE MK IS A CLASSIC IT SLAPS AL THOSE OTHER FIGHTING GAMES ECSPECIALLY SOUL CALIBUR.THE ONLY FIGHTING GAME ON ITS LEVEL IS TEKKEN.N ITS THA LAST 1 ITS GUARENTEED 2 B THA SHIT PLUS 62 CHARACTERS 2 CHOOSE FROM THATS A GOOD THING NOT A BAD THING.

"The game looks great but hasn't anyone noticed that 3 characters in the Character Select Screen are missing??

Khameleon is the only character that's missing (though she might be selectable like Blaze and Mokap were in MK:DA) because:
1. Unmasked Sub-Zero is the same person as the current Sub-Zero.
2. Human Smoke was a non-canonical extra character just like Classic Sub-Zero. Smoke's human form only exists as a memory in his mind.
$SLICK-PIMP$ @ Aug 15th 2006 4:50AM
YA IM PRETTY SURE U COULD GET UMASKED SUBZERO,N HUMAN SMOKE JUST BY PRESSING START ON THERE CHARACTERS OR BY UNLOCKING THERE COSTUMES. BUT I THINK THATS CHAMELON ON THA TOP 6TH GUY FROM THA LEFT NEXT 2 ERMAC. N THE LOCKED CHARACTERS R BLAZE,TAEGON,MEAT,N TAVEN.
Jose Valencia @ Aug 20th 2006 10:28AM
MK ARMAGEDDON looks and sounds great. I do consider the top fighting game against: Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive, and Tekken of course these games here were the chosen games Midway anounced they used to create the early version of MK4 and I know MK ARMAGEDDON will be a great hit to come out on Playstation 2 and xXbox owners. Has any one herd rumors that Midway is in the works to create a MK8 for the arcade and then the future platform Systems??? ;)
Jose Valencia @ Aug 20th 2006 10:49AM
Midway should release a Midway Treasures 4 to include an arcade perfect version of Ultimate MK3 and MK4 together in the package for either the Playstation 2 and Xbox or they could realse it for the future platform systems when they decide to release MK8. I herd though that Midway was releasing a special version of MK Armageddon that had that included in the package an arcade perfect version of Ultimate MK3 for Xbox, and Playstation 2. Not only that but an perfect arcade version of Ultimate MK3 will also be coming out on Xbox 360 live as well. Sweeeeeeeet. ;)
Jose Valencia @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:37AM
In MK:A Motoro Now seems to be appearing with two legs instead of four like in MK3 how great is that what do you guys think??
