I'm a gay gamer. I hate the word gaymer, not because I find it offensive, but because it's dumb. However, this guy (who, as has been stated, is a total asswipe) seems to think it was coined by gay gamers. I can say with almost 100% certainty that it was coined by a straight person. There's no reason a gay person would start using this term, because a) they're just asking for prejudice, and b) being gay isn't a big deal to gay people. Only a straight person would look at a gay gamer and say, 'Hey, you deserve a name to separate you from everyone else.'

I'm going to go ahead and agree about "leet," "teh," "noob," and especially "pwnd" and any numeral-for-letter variation on these. To be honest, it's these words and the culture of jackassery that surrounds them that turns me off to so many online games.

On a semi-related note, I do roll my eyes a little bit every time I happen across the word "gaymer," more because I find it cheesy than I find it offensive. I've seen the word more often used in (relatively) intelligent discourse on blogs and news sites than in any actual gaming situation, or in any situation where offense is intended. The sorts people who use the above list of intentionally-poorly-spelled words in-game, by and large, have other epithets to use with the same definition as "gaymer." They make it pretty clear that, to them, being gay is not a good thing at all.

There is a real culture of abrasiveness in the on-line gaming community, and any effort to eliminate words from the gaming lexicon should put slurs pretty close to the top. I shouldn't have to look for servers that explicitly state that slurs will get you booted. They should be the rule, not the exception.

Talk about steriotypes. Not all 14 year olds are little, immiture perverts who c4n'7 d0 73h 5p3ll1ngn3ssz.

hmm maybe its instinctual

as for wii-mote; its not supposed to be clever or "cool" or anything. its a shortened version of a name.

wifi is a large missuse as it doesn't really mean anything but it is now the name of 802.11 wireless protocall. get over it, its not going to change.

I just don't understand the beef with "wiimote." It's just like a nickname to "Wii Remote." Nobody beefs about saying "should'nt" or "can't" instead of should not or cannot. Or saying Mike instead of Michael.

I mean. Seriously.

Wifi? It's been used forever (since Wifi @_@) I mean...Jesus.

I found another copy of the statement from the WiFi Alliance guy, Phil Belanger:
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/11/08/wifi_isnt_short_for_.html
"Wi-Fi doesn't stand for anything. It is not an acronym. There is no meaning. "

Epobirs: I admit that 'meaningless' was a poor choice of words. I stand by the intention of my comment however, that it's useless. Yeah, you can justify it technically, but it adds nothing to the subject. It's like specifying that wheels are round. Read the link, it's good.

Marc: It's no big deal, I didn't know what 1337(Leet) meant for a while there also.

1. Short for elite, meaning someone who is on the highest level of power or skill(Usually used in gaming terms for someone who is one of the best players in that game).

2. Leet also means the actual language that 1337 is written in. Just like the word "English" is written in English. It is any word which changes the spelling of the original word while (usually), maintaining the sound when read out load. For instance, "¥0µ" is still pronounced "You", but "Suxxor" which means to suck, is pronounced as it is spelled.

Personally, the word word i hate the most is "pr0n" just say porn. Personally I like the term frag, but if you're gonna put that on the list you also have to add "gib".

Am i the only one that finds it funny about people complaining about leet speak?
You have to consider where and why it originated in the first place.(IRC, so that it was much harder for anyone passing by to follow what’s going on) Just like any slang its constantly evolving. If anything don’t complain about the guy that created or propagated it, direct it at the people using it out of context because they think its 'cool'.

JDodson, has been so "kind" as to make an article, against Joystiq and VGRC, http://www.gamerevolution.com/manifesto/view.php?id=179 , stating;

"I'm shockfused that Joystiq ran his piece." and "What really knocks me out, though, is the fact that he complains about "Wii-Mote" and "Celda,""...

My question to you sir, is does Dennis have no right to state his opinion? It's clear it's simply his opinion based on the title of the article. Also, does joystiq have no right to link to that opinion, because perhaps they agree? Clearly you've all the right in the world to state yours... But your rant to make the article seem as though it's against people, rather than the terms, gives the impression that perhaps his opinion hit home with you somehow. So now you're "pissed". “Pissed” enough to try to make two websites look bad, because you don't like the stated opinion.

By the way, “these people” is a derogative word, not hateful, and is obviously referring to the people that want to rub "gaymer" in everyone's faces, and not the entire homosexual community. He's not so dense as to believe that every minority and homosexual is trying to rub their beliefs and such at everyone.

Last, I find it ironic you try to emphasize your point about grammar being an importance in having a reason to bitch about being called a homophobic monster, by mockingly making the word “Homonster-phobe”... then spit out “shockfused” in all seriousness.

You can also not deny that you at least agree with some of Dennis' points.

If you are going to waste time complaining about how offensive this artical may be to the homosexual community, picking apart all the points he made trying to find flaws in them then why bother?

I must admit I have used some of those terms in the past and I agree that they are stupid. And Wi-Fi? People can make honest mistakes, and you jump on him like it is common knowledge, I didnt know why Wi-Fi was called Wi-Fi or how it came into existance.

A very nice read overall.

The anti-homosexual nature of this article is clear as day. Nobody needs to "pick apart" anything to notice this. The only probable reason why "gaymer" was thrown in this list was to promote the creator's own negative feelings of the gay community.
Gamers using "gay" and "fag" in a derogatory sense are more obnoxious than anything else, and I'm fairly certain there is a much larger community of idiots using these words than there are people using gaymer. So why "gaymer's" offend him so much is beyond me. If he is indeed being called a homophopic monster than he is probably saying something to deserve it. Judging by his article nobody would be in the wrong to call him such.

J. Dodson is in the right with his article. http://www.gamerevolution.com/manifesto/view.php?id=179 I've been visiting Game Revolution for years, and I'm glad that he wrote it.

How wonderful that GAYMER made it on the list. I for one am a GAYMER and proud of it. All to often Gay gamers, (as well as blacks, hispanics, jews...) have to hear hate filled rants spewed forth in chat, teamspeak and all forms of gaming communication systems under the guise of "trash talk". We've all heard/read it...some of us are just a bit more sensitive to it than others..Why? because we have to live it every day. We're harrassed at work, we're harrassed in restaurants, we're harrassed in bar's...then when we come home to play a game...we're harrassed there as well...or forced into leading a double life amongst hate filled guilds just to further our own gaming ambitions. Can you imagine hearing hate spewed at you...when all you want to do is PLAY A GAME?

So, by using the term GAYMER, we can identify other's in the gaming community who are the same as we are who also seek a better atmosphere. A place that's accepting and Free of hate and bias where we too can "Get our frag on" and relax.

We're Gay...we game...get used to it.

GAYMER's EXIST!

Response to 61, 63: This article is not about gay gamers. It's about terms he dislikes. One term, was "gaymer". He probably has no care if you're a gay gamer or not. Quite simply put, he probably only has a real problem with the bloody term. Which I too find rather stupid. Stop trying to warp the articles target point.
