Sony has me as a customer as long as they keep up the backwards compatibility. It's not right how Microsoft killed the Xbox and lied to their customers promising full backwards compatibility. At least Sony is doing their best in this area. It's fun to go back to your old games and play them when there aren't new games you want to play. It's also a good bargain to buy the old PS2 games at $9.99 and play them! There are tons of new Ps2 games we will enjoy on the PS3 until they are ready for PS3. If we can't afford the PS3, we can keep playing our PS2 knowing that the games will still work when we finally have our wonderful PS3! You Xbots can't say that now can ya? Your console is broken and only plays a few Xbox games and not that well I might add.

Isn't SNK bigger in Japan than it is here? Might that be a factor on which system gets more support in Japan? Isn't Japanese support what the 360 sees as so pivetol?

Might this be hinting at a sequel of the "PSP Vs. DS" battle?

The similarities are starting to stack up.

- DS innovation Vs. PSP horse power

- Less expensive media Vs. Sony proprietary media (UMD then Blu-ray now)

- Dedicated gaming Vs. Multimedia machine

- Inexpensive Vs. Expensive

and now the emerging similarity.....

- AAA original titles Vs. expensive, lackluster game library heavily dominated by ports.

Honestly.....I just don't know which battle I'm talking about. ;)

I wonder if sales for the psp version will be affected by the fact that a neo geo emulator can run (illegally) all the metal slug games you want for free.

"I am begining to think buying a PS3 is a huge risk too. All these delaying/ Cancellations just bring back memories of how Nintendo lost it's crown to Sony. (starting with the N64)"

There is only one game that started production and then was cancelled for the PS3.

http://www.technophilia.org/2006/07/list-of-cancelled-ps3-games.html

even though this list claims to boast cancelled games, it only shows a list of companies that decided to steer away from developing on the PS3. There is a big difference. Chances are they didn't even start the groundwork out of fears for stretching themselves to thin. This list is really a sad display of how far people try to go to prove the PS3 is dying before it has come out.

fagaymer (your name is stupid as hell)

I have a ps2. I can do that with those games NOW.

So can 100 million others (around...)

Why do I need a PS3 to do that? expecially if it's Sony's first gen shipment of the console (garunteed bugs, look at the PSone, ps2, psp...) for $600?

Also, Sony never said there would be COMPLETE backwards compatibility. The new PS2 Slims don't even play all of the PS2 games, why expect anything more from the PS3?

The PS3 is going to need a lot of support from the start to keep Sony at #1 in the gaming world. Companies avoiding developing titles for the PS3 is a very, very bad thing. They say they'll hold off until the PS3 picks up in popularity. If hardly anyone develops on it, then when do they think all those sales are going to happen? Apart from early adopters, consumers don't buy their game console because of what may happen, but what already has happened. No one is going to rush out and pick up the PS3 saying, "New stuff will be coming out 3 years from now, so I'd better get this as soon as possible." They get it after a good chunk of titles hit.

The PS2 backwards compatibility is a minimal if non-existent factor. No rational individual will purchase a PS3 when few PS3 titles are coming out and will only be used for PS2 games. That is what the PS2 is for, playing PS2 games. Once the new system comes out, the old one dies rather quickly. This is already happened to Sony. Their PS2 sales are starting to drop in anticipation of the new one. Publishers aren't releasing titles and consumers aren't buying them. Few people play the old stuff on the new system. If that weren't the case, PS1 game development would still be in full swing. Many PS2 games would have been better off as PS1 games. Cheaper development. But, publishers know full and well that no one would buy a new release PS1 game in 2006, or even back in 2002. Same thing will happen now.

Buying a $600 PS3 when a $130 PS2 is just as good isn't going to do Sony any favors.

This may be dumb to bring up, but I heard there was a point in time in PSone's history where Kutaragi didn't want 2D games like Megaman on the console for a certain amount of time. Is that true or not?

It might not have much importance now, but interesting thoughts can be made about Kutaragi or Sony's view on displaying power or worrying about 'gimmicks' or 'gimmick games' or 'ghetto gaming'.

However, I welcome Metal Slug on Wii. I was prepared to buy the GBA iteration(s?) before I heard about this.

SNK games would also be awesome on Wii VC. Samurai Showdown = pwnage.

The PS3 is gonna have some problems initially, the big names are coming back, but the relatively smaller guys (Responsible for a lot of games on the Playstation 2 obviously), and many of us folk that read into stuff too much, seem to be willing to wait back, and see what happens, if the PS3 gets good games, then we'll go to it, if the XBox 360 gets the good ones, we'll go to that, if it isn't worth it, we'll get the Wii, So far it looks like the future is going to be in the hands of, I hate to say it, the MTV crowd again, which means the PS3 will win, with every episode of Cribs showing the stars with their diamond-encrested never been used PS3s, making it look like the cool thing to have, it will be the iPod of gaming, an overinvestment.

Yes, they should talk...
If anyone knows that cost can lead to a system's demise, it's SNK.

The NeoGeo was up to $650, with games sometimes costing more than $300!

If not for the arcade market (which soon collapsed anyway) they would never had survived as long as they did.

And for the person that thinks that it's funny that the PSP and Wii versions of Metal Slug will feature the same resolution, it's worth noting that the ORIGINAL $300 NeoGeo version of the game was at 320x240 resolution. Is it any surprise when the NES and PS2 versions of Galaga look the same?

SNK was a great fucking developer, I can't see how any other gamer could see different. Metal Slug is the best shoot-em-up I've ever played, and I enjoy some of their fighters even more than Capcom's. I still say "was" since they've gone to shit ever since Playmore. If they do publish more "anthologies" or release older titles through XBL or Virtual Console, that'd be nice.

Smart move in my opinion. Really focus should be on gameplay and not on graphics anyway.
