First Post!
This says it all...

PS2 - DVD

@pkilla

The difference between then and now is simple. CDs were already well in circulation before the Playstation hit shelves. Also of note, when the PS2 launched, DVDs were fast becoming adopted even though DVD players were still expensive. The first two iterations of the Playstation capitalized on tried and true formats. The PS3 is damn near introducing Blu-ray to the masses. It will not have been on the market 6 months before the PS3 launches. And it has a competing format that is cheaper and currently using a better compression. Blu-ray is not a guaranteed win for Sony. The PS3 is ahead of its time.

What's led you to think that? Other than 'Entitlements'. :D

When I bought the PS1, I wasn't looking for a CD player. When I purchased the PS2, I wasn't looking for a DVD player. So I'm a little irritated when people automatically assume that if I were buying a PS3, I'm also interested in Blu-Ray movies.

I'm only interested in games. I don't want to buy movies. I'm not planning to connect the system to an HDTV. And I don't want to spend more than $500 on a game system. Pure and simple.

Sure you may not be looking for that stuff, but those that do find it helpful A2, for instance, since i'm in my apartment now i dont have tons of space to so many different electronics taking up space around my TV, so i do occasionaly use my 360 or PS2 as a dvd player, its helpful because while they're not as good as standalone players they do well as fill ins and it allows me to watch all my DVD's and what not and GIVES me the option of buying Bluray if i so desire, which i like, having options is good.
Also while you dont need an HDTV.. its nigh coming time you MAY have to upgrade in the future and when that happens its good to have a system that takes advantage of the great picture quality HDTV's have to offer. If companies like MS and sony weren't forward thinking like that... whats the point of upgrading from the PS1/ps2/GC/xbox? To play the same stuff but shinier?

Erik -- that is very interesting! If you read the comments, you'll note they did explain that the first wave of Blu-ray movies are still using the MPEG-2 codec (why is another question entirely) while both are able to use the VC-1, which the HD-DVD actually did. Why this was not mentioned in the comparison article itself is a bit of evidence towards the generic "crush-Sony" attitude by twisting the truth (lying through omission is still lying, after all). It's still a good read, but until we can get a hybrid player playing the same movie on the same codec, but different formats of course, it's always going to be up to you to take it for what it's worth. An excellent link! Thank you very much.

Your in Luck. The PS3 is $499.
There is another version with HDMI, wireless and a bigger hard drive that is $599.
But the Base system is $499, that would qualify as less than $500...

Erik
Nice article...
Oh MY GOD... I Read an Opinion on the Internet.
It must be FACT... Yeah... its FACT.
Just cause you read it on the Internet, does not make it fact.
$100 says that that article was written by a microsoft employee or a Tohsiba Employee or a XBox360 Fanboy or someone who just bought a HD-DVD player and likes the way it looks sitting on top of his LaserDisc Player, and just below his Betamax.

You guys are borderline retarded. Did I pick a side? No. Did I laugh at you? No (but I will now). All I said was read the damn article and discuss. If you have a problem with what they say on other sites, so be it, but guess what.. I didn't F#$%ing say it. I just wanted to hear some opinions on both sides. Truth is I haven't made up my mind on the future of video formats but since you guys would rather be jackasses, I will look for brighter people.

Does anyone know whether the higher cost to manufacture BDs will affect the msrp of ps3 games?

Well fact of the matter is....BR is alittle expensive now, but soon just like DVD's they will be a dime-a-dozen.... And I know for my PC, I would LOVE a format thats big enough to hold a Harddrive on a minimum abou of discs! I could save all my movies onto one BR, and then make space on my HDD.

Also it will be nicee to buy a TV series and have it all on 1 disc, instead of 5 DVD's.

I welcome BR with open arms!

Blu-ray discs only cost about ten cents more to manufacture than DVDs, so the medium won't actually raise the price of PS3 games. Blu-ray movies are already being sold at 20~30 dollars, which is the same price as DVDs. You can even get Blu-ray movies at lower prices than HD-DVD (possibly due to greater popularity). Both formats use the exact same codecs; the only difference is that blu-ray has a higher data transfer right and 25 gigabytes per layer versus HD-DVD's 15 Gb per layer.

PS3 titles should be priced at 59.99 since Microsoft already put the pricing structure in.

For those that said they want to buy a PS3 just for gaming, and don't plan on hooking up to an HDTV or watching Blu-ray discs, well, more power to you.

If so, then wait. Don't buy one now when it's full-priced. If it's not a good value for it, then really, be a smart consumer.. and wait. There's not even that many good launch games (at least - none that tickle my fancy), and I'm in love with the PS3.

In two years, PS3 will probably be down to $500... or even $450. Who knows?

Depends on how thigns go. Just as long as you get one for Metal Gear Solid 4...

Interesting, I initially thought that BDs were a bit more expensive to make:

Ndoerr,

I appreciate that. I was just venting a bit. I try to see things evenly because the truth is that I am that guy who has to have new technology all the time (I am sure some of you can relate). Yes, I own a 360, but I also own a PS2, PS1, PSP, Gamecube, Every version of gameboy, Nes Snes, Neo-Geo, well...you get the idea. The reason I brought that article up is that the more i read tech site the more it looks like HD-DVD is taking the lead. Does that mean its a better format? Of course not, they both have their merits. But really, all I want to know (like many consumers) is who the winner will be. Unlike game consoles, the video word really needs one clear winner. I don't want to buy the same movie 10 times. Nobody does. I am waiting this round out, which is kind of a first for me.

Needless to say, the more genuine debate and discussion I read, the more I can begin to see which way the market is leaning. But throwing the word Fanboy around like an insult is not the way to debate. Hell, the name of the site is PS3 FANBOY! I thought fanboy was a compliment. Don't worry, I will be around for future discussions. Here, as well as Xbox360 fanboy, PSP fanboy, DS fanboy, etc...

BR really isnt that expensive and its getting annyoing when writers keep saying that HD-DVD is cheaper Theyre both the same except for storage Its getting tiring of hearing the more superior and Cheaper HD-DVD theyre both the same only the memory or storage is the difference and that could decide also brand factor is also included stop saying Cheaper all the time :(

I think some of you are looking at 10 cents as a small difference in production when in corperate terms its rather huge. Lets say a film compaby releases a monster summer blockbuster like Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Lets say they press 10,000,000 copies for worldwide distribution. And thats being kind. Hell, Finding Nemo sold 8 million in one day! That would be an extra $1,000,000 dollars for the production of that particular movie. Now you show me one corperate douchebag who wouldn't want to save a million bucks.
