How to get the most out of your Dead Rising demo

Thekmillion, a very helpful IGN poster, has done all who downloaded that massive Dead Rising demo a service. He has put together a very well-done walkthrough for those looking to maximize the pleasure out of their 15 minutes of zombie slaying.
From the post, you'll learn how to find the katana, submachine gun, and put together certain blender drinks to give you advantages. If you put down the demo and haven't explored half this stuff, it's time to go back in and kick some major undead butt!
Check after the break for the full FAQ.

Some people simply download this demo, play it for the 15 minutes and say "That sucked", then delete it from their hard drive. So I made this little guide to shine some light on all the things you can do in this demo, and also to help anyone who is looking for something. Enjoy.

XIV. Random Interesting Things
- If you fire a bullet at the hard hat of a zombie, the bullet will bounce off.
- In the full game, you have to place meat in the microwave so that you won't get sick from having raw meat. But since there is no meat in the demo, there's no use for the microwave in the demo.
- Take a nearby Frying Pan, place in on the oven, and take it off after a couple of second. The Frying Pan will become scolding hot.
- If you throw a bottle of cooking oil, it will splash on the ground. When a zombie walks into the puddle, he will trip.
- The hunk of meat attracks zombies.
- Cardboard boxes and garbage cans hold items. Throw them to break them open.
- You can shoot out the windows near the park entrance, and kill the zombies on the other side.
- My personal best for kills is 672.
XV. Conclusion:
This is the first guide/faq I've ever made, and I have to say that it was actually fun. I hope this can also decrease the amount of repetitive topics on the board. In fact, I'm currently working on a FAQ.
This did take almost the entire day, so I hope you guys enjoy it, and mabye even learn something new from it.

"Some people simply download this demo, play it for the 15 minutes and say "That sucked", then delete it from their hard drive."
That's what I do with most 360 demos. Not this one. I've put in a good two to three hours. The only reason I haven't played more is because I don't want to get sick of the game before I get my hands on the full retail version.
I also find the disclaimer in the beginning some what amusing, about how the game has no affiliation with George A. Romero.
Peter Clark @ Aug 6th 2006 1:02PM
Argh, I hope they release this for PC some day.
Pc @ Aug 6th 2006 1:06PM
Yeah, the game is awesome. Can't wait until it releases on tuesday. :)
Dan @ Aug 6th 2006 1:20PM
I consider myself a some what jaded gamer but this demo really intrigued both from a technical stand point as well as it's innovative take on the open ended action genre. With Lost Planet due out later this year, I think Capcom is coming out of the next gen gates a lot quicker and with more credibility than many other developers.
Reality From The Sidelines @ Aug 6th 2006 1:22PM
Best demo recently for 360. Had a blast playing it. Very well realised environment, great gfx, great controls, atmospheric and that's just the demo!
I too am trying to stop playing around with it now so I'm not over-exposed come full version launch day (yes I will be buying this game!).
A lot of people are complaining the gameplay is simplistic (which it is) but that's missing the point I guess. :)
kay @ Aug 6th 2006 1:41PM
SFII' HF, Dead Rising and Lost Planet.
Thank you Capcom. You rule.
PsionStorm @ Aug 6th 2006 1:49PM
The demo is fantastic, and I can't wait to try some of these tips out.
Thanks for the time and effort! Much appreciated!
AK @ Aug 6th 2006 2:06PM
The demo is badass. The most kills i've gotten is 231. I find the melee weapons more satisfying/fun for killing the zombies, but i have to try the machine gun now that i know where it is.
Overall, I can't wait to pick up this gem on tuesday.
teknomusik @ Aug 6th 2006 2:16PM
It'd be cool if it was possible to save progess from a demo...
wakusei @ Aug 6th 2006 2:18PM
#5 I agree! Capcom is giving us something a little different in their next-gen games. It's refreshing to see a developer like Capcom revive an older game like SF2 while at the same time breathing some new life into some pretty standard genres.
Sure, Lost Planet is a third person shooter, but it has an interesting spin on gameplay that keeps you moving and fighting. Dead Rising? Beat em' up / hack n' slash...with zombies! Nothing new there, but I was sold the second I fried a zombie's face. Can't wait to get home, make some zombie bait and find that katana...
If the demo is this good I can't wait to see what else they have up their sleeves.
Guantanamo Bay Prison Gamer @ Aug 6th 2006 2:32PM
I had to sleep with some chik that works at toys r us to get a reservation. This game rocks that f'n much.
The ZeroCorpse @ Aug 6th 2006 2:33PM
Want to rack up LOTS of kills in a short time?
Grab a shopping cart and get to the main entrance area, by the stairs and fountain- There will be hundreds of ghouls there. Press X and hold it while steering into the horde. You'll kill dozens- at least- while running through them with the cart.
Also, learn to utilize both attack types for each weapon. If you press and HOLD the X button, you generally do a "wide swing" attack that can take out multiple zombies in a hit, while tapping X does the decapitation, which looks cool but takes longer.
Imadogg @ Aug 6th 2006 2:42PM
Hot damn... this is merely a demo, and check out all the crap you can already do! Full game better not disappoint, though I don't plan to buy it.
That is, unless the demo gets me to rethink...

I've been expecting this game for quite a while, and I'd download it if my Xbox 360 wasn't a piece of shit. My Xbox 360 has become too damned slow, it takes almost a minute to boot and show the dashboard, and it took 3 minutes to start halo 2, and the result wasn't nice anyway. I can't access my freaking arcade games! The 360 becomes faster if I remove the hard drive, but the problem is that I need the freaking hard drive because that's where I have everything. Can anyone tell me how to fix this anyway? Thanks
SyxxtySyxx @ Aug 6th 2006 2:54PM
awesome guide buddy
Dead Rising Demo Review @ Aug 6th 2006 3:39PM
@boots > try defragging the HD it may help. You will have to google for the hidden trick to doing it because I can't recall off hand what it is. Beware you may loose some D/l or achievemnts but should be able to get 'em back from XBlive. (don't quote me on that) ;)
I've now put my thoughts on the demo into a more readable form on my blog. Link is the author name on this post (clicky).
Franky Digital @ Aug 6th 2006 3:58PM
@1: "you have no life if your able to kill 600+ zombies in 15 min my best is like 250"
First of all, you're both playing the same game. By that simple property, aren't you in the same situation as the FAQ poster?
Second of all, why wasn't this comment modded or -1? What does this have to do with the original topic.
As for the FAQ itself, good job. I missed a few of those things, so I'm happy to get a little more out of the demo.
FMB @ Aug 6th 2006 4:06PM

There are also batteries for your camera in the camera shop.
Scoobydiesel @ Aug 6th 2006 4:36PM
I love zombies....This is the best demo so far on the 360 and i DO plan to buy the full verzion.
I need to find that submachine gun now...
I do agree capcom seems to be doing pretty well, i was dissapointed in SF2 but this and LP both make up for that.
Some Dutch Guy @ Aug 6th 2006 4:49PM
Very nice walkthrough!!! Two thumbs up!
I discovered some nice new features in the demo.
How often did you play the demo to get all this figured out? (probably won't be playing it again till the full game is available huh? )
Can't wait, I'm a Huge fan of all those zombie-movies and all we had these years was resident evil (good too).
Imadogg @ Aug 6th 2006 4:57PM
19. "great guide, but dont doesnt this guy have anything else to do with his time."
Well it is his own leisure time. What, do you want to be a part of "his own leisure time"???
Matt @ Aug 6th 2006 5:02PM
It is spelled "scald" not "scold". Scolding a zombie wouldn't make any sense...
The ZeroCorpse @ Aug 6th 2006 5:19PM
BAD zombie!!! Go to time out!
KiySeph @ Aug 6th 2006 5:27PM
If you charge up your Baseball Bat (hold down the X button to wind up), you'll get 10-30 PP for each zombie you hit with a charged Baseball Bat attack.
Insomnia Bob @ Aug 6th 2006 7:47PM
Good post Joystiq.
Regarding the demo...I was already somewhat interested in this game...now I'm biting my nails for it. It's just good fun.
I picked up a 360 two days ago. I own no 360 or Xbox games, so I've been making do with XBLA and the Media Center features. And playing this demo.
With the games coming out now, and in the next few months, the 360 is getting to the point (quickly) where it's well worth your gaming dollar.
Brad Lee @ Aug 6th 2006 7:54PM
I was a bit iffy at first with Dead Rising because of all the delays. Usually delayed games end up sucking, but this demo has really put my fears to rest. My bro and I both have played this demo for hours, and thats saying something, considering you can only play for 15 min at a time.
The only things I didn't know about already were mixing drinks, the submachine gun, and scalding zombies with a hot frying pan (I so gotta try that out).
My personal best is around 300 kills, but I prefer weapons with comic relief (bench, golf club, bowling ball) to weapons that are actually useful. If you want to rack up a lot of kills, get the book that triples sporting goods' durability, then pick up a few baseball bats and just go crazy. Knives and clevers are also pretty useful. They are both extremely fast and usually kill in one shot, so you can rack up kills in no time.
Jonathan @ Aug 6th 2006 11:48PM
Am I just a pervert or is that pornography on the television screen (see pic)?
Dirk Dorkelson @ Aug 7th 2006 12:09AM
My favorite moment was changing into the little kids' clothes, so the dude was wearing super tight shorts and a midriff-baring T-shirt. Then I outfitted him with the Servbot mask and a lightsaber before I went on my rampage. Comedy gold.
Another burst of hilarity came when the sniper dude was looking at my character through the scope of the rifle. Now if they could just sync up the dialogue to match the character's outlandish getup, that'd be true next gen.
All told, I really want to play this.
Darth Pixel @ Aug 7th 2006 2:16AM
This is the game of the year!
You can do 2 things in countless ways:
- Kill zombies.
- Run around.
I am told there is also a story, but we will have to wait for the full game to know if that is true because the demo doesn't show much of it.
Felix @ Aug 7th 2006 2:52AM
Excellent post, not a waste of time at all, I'm glad someone is willing to share this information with the rest of us. Now I'm off to play this excellent game.
Mrak @ Aug 7th 2006 3:03AM
Thanks for making this guide!!! Wow, very complete.
Foppe @ Aug 7th 2006 3:23AM
I think I´ve played the demo for 2 hours now, and I still discover things I hav´nt seen yet.
I laughed so hard the first time I got the bowling ball and the possibility to use everything as weapons are so great. Sure it feels useless to throw gems or CD´s on zombies, but the possibility to do it is great. Shooting golfballs, drive skateboard, taking photos, the possibilities seems to be endless.
This game can´t be bad. If it is, I´m just going to replay the demo 100x times instead of playing the game ;)
in5ane @ Aug 7th 2006 5:29AM
Why is it OK for Joystiq to rip off this poor dudes work? A link would have been sufficient.
plugstar @ Aug 7th 2006 10:31AM
this game reminds me of gta in some ways - im assuming that if you want you can just go on a free running rampage killing zombies in the most disgusting or hilarious ways, or just do the missions.
I hope the missions of the full game arent strict - like in gta you can do the missions if you want.
The game is funny for the first hour then gets repetitive - i hope the missions bring some excitement to it, like gta has ripped off all the gangsta films - like scarface/miami vice/boyz n the hood etc maybe dead risings missions will be spoofs of zombie themed films. Imagine seeing simon pegg or nick frost (shaun of the dead) as characters in it - that would be genius!
Robert Summa @ Aug 7th 2006 10:40AM
Uh, in5ane, there is a link. In fact, I mention "the poor dude" with the first word in the story.
thekmillion @ Aug 7th 2006 10:51AM
Thanks for posting this on JoyStiq Robert Summa. When I made this I had no intentions of this happening, but it's pretty cool. In case you're wondering about the link, it was moved:

Robert Summa @ Aug 7th 2006 11:11AM
No problem. I fixed the link, thanks. Good work!
Sam @ Aug 7th 2006 1:42PM
@in5ane- maybe because its not for pc, its for xbox 360, and not many people have those at work...
VampireHunter Z @ Aug 7th 2006 3:58PM
The funniest thing I did in this demo is go into a women's store and pick up a handbag as a weapon. I was smacking zombies with a purse!
Tony @ Aug 7th 2006 7:55PM
i cant wait for the ranking system for the full version of the game what my plan would be is go to a store with many stools(jills sandwiches) and use them to baracade the door. but since we dont know if the zombies at night time will be swarming, hunting,or anything els to get youit could be flawed.
andrew @ Aug 7th 2006 9:52PM
where are the snacks?
thekmillion @ Aug 7th 2006 10:44PM
andrew, snacks are located around the fountain near "Jill's Sandwhiches". They are hidden in the brush by the fountain.
Tom Simmons @ Aug 10th 2006 1:26AM
I just found another PP sticker if anyone's interested: Go up the se of stairs closest to the Leisure Park entracnce, and go in the first store on your left. Look at the green shirt in the middle closely with your camera and take a picture. You get over 800 PP for that picture alone.
Yke @ Aug 14th 2006 4:19AM
Did not know that you can blend things..
This game rocks..
