IGN: Mario Strikers sequel to hit Wii

IGN is reporting that sources close to Nintendo of Europe are claiming a sequel to the GameCube original Super Mario Strikers is not only already underway but will be revealed at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany.
Considering the success of the original and tendency of Nintendo to take advantage of successful franchises, this would seem like a no brainer. The best part is that hopefully with an online Wii, we can get some multiplayer Strikers.

any thoughts on how this game would be controlled?
mercatfat @ Aug 6th 2006 1:48AM
i don't know, man.
with the wiimote, maybe?
Fuzz @ Aug 6th 2006 1:50AM
"any thoughts on how this game would be controlled?"
I'm guessing telekenysis. . .
ttr @ Aug 6th 2006 1:59AM
But you can't use your hands. Maybe you strap he remote to your leg. Now that's an idea!
Bryan T @ Aug 6th 2006 2:28AM
Good, loved the game!
The more and more I hear about the Wii, the more I think about picking one up.
Kevin @ Aug 6th 2006 2:55AM
since when was mario strikers a success?
bounchfx @ Aug 6th 2006 3:15AM
bleh, strikers
Fischsticks @ Aug 6th 2006 3:20AM
i love all the mario sports game but i personally thought strikers was teh worst of them all... but that still means it was 10 times better than madden... mario tennis anyone?
Andy @ Aug 6th 2006 3:31AM
Wow that picture is SCARY WIERD. One reason I will never buy a Nintendo console.
Chris @ Aug 6th 2006 3:42AM
Ever since it sold over 500,000 copies Kevin.

I can't believe I'm hearing this! Mario Strikers was (IMO) the BEST Gamecube title of all (especially for multiplayer). And I'm not alone; it has won numerous awards in 2005.
• "Best Sports Game", and was nominated a finalist for "Best Game of Show" at E3 2005
• Gamespy's "Game of the Year 2005" awards for "Best GameCube Sports" and "Best GameCube Multiplayer"
• Ranked #2 for all GameCube games in 2005
• IGN's "Best of 2005" award for "Best GameCube Multiplayer Game"
I can only assume that people who bash this game simply haven't played it.
As for the controls, I would think the analog stick is still going to control your main movement around the field. I think you could use the Wii-mote to direct where passes/shots go as well as weapon aiming.
Though, if the developers got creative, the whole game could be done with the Wii-mote alone (similar to stylus control on the DS). We shall see.
This is one title I'm REALLY excited about. When I traded in my console collection (Gamecube, PS2, and all games) the only game I wish I still had is Strikers. Now, I don't have to worry about re-buying the original when I get my Wii. Nice.

--> "Considering the success of the original and tendency of Nintendo to take advantage of successful franchises, this would seem like a no brainer."
WTF? You make it sound like Nintendo is the ONLY company to do this and that it is a bad thing.
I swear...if you guys want to be taken seriously as a real gaming website and not "another gaming blog", then you'll have stop sounding so biased on certain things.
localpirate @ Aug 6th 2006 4:19AM
Good thing I didn't buy the first one, heh!
Frank @ Aug 6th 2006 4:45AM
I don't think anyone here doubts that there will eventually be versions of Mario Golf/Kart/Tennis/Party/Baseball/Soccer/Smash/Paper for the Wii, so it shouldn't come as a surprise when each is announced.
Kn1ves @ Aug 6th 2006 5:30AM
@11 [ I swear...if you guys want to be taken seriously as a real gaming website and not "another gaming blog", then you'll have stop sounding so biased on certain things. ]
uhm im pretty sure joystiq isnt 'another gaming blog'. even if it it is, ur here right? they offer you a free service and u complain? wtf is wrong with you.

@11 [ I swear...if you guys want to be taken seriously as a real gaming website and not "another gaming blog", then you'll have stop sounding so biased on certain things. ]
You make the mistake of assuming that Joystiq only thinks Nintendo is capable of taking its hit franchises and exploiting them for all their worth. Rockstar does it with GTA and Ubisoft does it with Tom Clancy, for example. Joystiq wasn't saying that Nintendo is the only one, but that it is one of THE major ones (and one of the most expected ones, considering the excitement drawn over many of its games).
GSI @ Aug 6th 2006 6:14AM
I know that but the WAY it was phrased (and considering how biased some of the bloggers of this site come across), it comes across as though they are the only developer/publisher that does this.
"uhm im pretty sure joystiq isnt 'another gaming blog'. even if it it is,"
Ummm...yes it is.
Felix Andrews @ Aug 6th 2006 7:37AM
This was a pretty mediocre game on the Cube... I dunno. I think I'd prefer to see a Super Mario Gridiron - the Yankee game holds more opportunity for streamlining and infusing that Mario sensibility, I reckon.
Will @ Aug 6th 2006 9:22AM
"I know that but the WAY it was phrased...it comes across as though they are the only developer/publisher that does this."
No it doesn't. The only way you'd draw that conclusion is if you were fishing for that conclusion.
"I swear...if you guys want to be taken seriously as a real gaming website and not 'another gaming blog', then you'll have stop sounding so biased on certain things."
They're too busy with their blatant biases against Sony and Microsoft to try and hide their bias against Nintendo.
kelekod @ Aug 6th 2006 9:26AM
Sweetness. This is one of the best games for the Cube IMO. Now I have to await for Baseball, Tennis and hopefully a Mario basketball game on the Wii. 3 on 3 hoops likes good I'll be getting that.
Wait a sec, what about Mariokart? how long for that one? Cause it keep out pretty fast on the 64, but took longer on Cube and DS (like after the release of the systems).
benjamin @ Aug 6th 2006 10:00AM
I think the main mistake in the introduction of the whole Mario sports games was that Nintendo took so long to come out with a Soccer game. They came out with baseball, tennis, etc. long before they decided to do one based on the WORLD'S MOST POPULAR SPORT.
Had Stikers come out in the the beginning of the Gamecube's lifecycle it might have helped sell hardware. No one was going to buy a Cube in late 2005 because of it, though.
It looks to me that Nintendo learned from their mistake and wants to get Strikers out early with the Wii.
darryl @ Aug 6th 2006 10:09AM
"...and tendency of Nintendo to take advantage of successful franchises..."
Oh, no... I think you've got that all wrong! Remember it's only Sony that puts out sequels. Nintendo OTOH is *innovative* and wouldn't dare sell it's fans the same crap over and over again!
Chaz @ Aug 6th 2006 10:15AM
Yeah, Strikers wasn't that great as a single player game. There goes $50 down the drain...
I haven't tried multiplayer yet. I will the next time I have friends over or when my siblings are home.
Apparently it was quite the sleeper-hit, so maybe they'll actually make it cooler come sequel.
Jay @ Aug 6th 2006 10:53AM
This game was massive where I'm from, though it was called Mario Smash Football, after the sports name. An immensely popular multiplayer games. Several pubs in my area had small tournaments for it.
Kenny_Banya @ Aug 6th 2006 10:57AM
First, nintendo really do that. Nobody said nintendo was the only one that takes advantage of successful franchises, but they do it.
Secondly, Bob Summa is no good. He seems to love nintendo (for 80% of his posts are wii related), but needs to insert a "daily bash" to assist his credibility.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Aug 6th 2006 11:12AM
Wow. Some of you have become so defensive of Nintendo that you're now willing to conjure up bias in articles just so you have something to post about. Saying Nintendo takes advantage of their successful franchises is hardly an attack or an insult. They do it. Get over it. Think about it while you're playing Mario Party 8 or New Super Mario - a good game's a good game. Robert is not saying that making sequels makes them a poor company.
Even if he did, he'd be free to express that opinion. Don't always assume that a negative opinion springs forth from bias. Quoting out of context, twisting facts and excluding certain information are far more serious signs of bias. (Besides, regular readers must realize by now that Joystiq is simultaneously biased for and against everything ever.)
Robert Summa @ Aug 6th 2006 11:15AM
First, don't call me Bob. My grandfather goes by Bob. You can call me Rob, Robert, or the greatest man of all time. Either one will do.
Second, I love all video games. I don't care who makes them. But you have to realize, we are just here to report the news and current trends. If the Wii just happens to dominate the landscape at the moment, then there's not much we can do. Would you rather us ignore this stuff and report only what Sony or Microsoft does?
The day Sony starts releasing more news or more sites become even more invested in it, then you'll start to see more Sony posts and then you can say we have a Sony bias.
Josh @ Aug 6th 2006 11:32AM
I can't believe some tool fanboy got this comment section so far off topic.
Besides that, though, I submitted this news, too, and I did it on Friday! *pout pout*
benjamin @ Aug 6th 2006 11:36AM
I'm just grateful for a post to comment about on a Sunday! The only day of the week I have time to read about this stuff just happens to be the slowest news day. Any blogger out there posting on a Sunday should automatically be free from criticism!
Kenny_Banya @ Aug 6th 2006 11:39AM
Ok, I apologize. You're good =P
Anyway, my assholic comment wasn't aiming at the 80% nintendo related posts, but the "daily bash". Bad mood actualy.
Danny @ Aug 6th 2006 2:40PM
"9. Wow that picture is SCARY WIERD. One reason I will never buy a Nintendo console."
you ... make ... my ... brain ... hurt.
Kevin @ Aug 6th 2006 2:45PM
Mario Strikers multiplayer was / is absolutely amazing.
GSI @ Aug 6th 2006 3:21PM
Sure thing Bob... :-P
CG @ Aug 6th 2006 5:05PM
I'm happy about this news. Strikers was pretty lame single-player, but was one of the best Mario sports games for multiplayer. And I don't know how people say it was the worst sports game; I thought baseball was far worse.
Pince @ Aug 6th 2006 6:44PM
why are half of the posts on here stupid childish BS like "heh, good thing I didnt play the first one". This is a news blog you idiots.
I mean, hell, do you go to other news blogs about the fighting in Lebanon and post "heh, good thing I don't live in the middle east". Well, I hope thats not something you do. Because that would simply point out, as your comments here do, that you have no experience whatsoever with the subject at hand, and it does not affect you in any way, but you just feel like being a jackass.
To all of those that I am addressing and you know who you are. No one gives a shit what you think about anything, nor will they ever, because you are a childish moron. If it is your goal to be taken seriously then I suggest you stop with the pointless smartass comments. If, on the other hand, it is your goal to sound like a bored 6-year-old, please, continue to make yourslef look dumb.
PS:Strikers is such an addicting game. It would be kind of sweet to see the Wii version control with the remote in some way, but perhaps they could make it optional or only use motion for dekes or putting spin on shots and crosses.
Dr.Swiss @ Aug 6th 2006 8:34PM
I completely agree with you Pince 100%.
But... on the other hand I would also say "good thing I didn't buy the first one," just because there is a sequal coming out and I would rather get the better, improved version with possible wifi (here's hoping).
Same goes for Smash Brothers. I really really want to buy the GC version but if it's coming out on wii then I'm kinda glad I didn't buy the first one since I'll just get the Wii version. (although the GC version would give me practice for the Wii version.
There's alot of games on the GC that I want to buy but if rumours are true and they are coming out on the Wii then I might as well put aside the cash I would of paid for the games to go towards a wedding ring and just buy the new improved versions later on when they come out.
Petrie @ Aug 7th 2006 12:02AM
Why do people insist on calling Melee the first Smash Brothers game?
Jeff @ Aug 7th 2006 5:04PM
I think the Wii is going to be THE BEST gaming system of all time. Its cheap, the games are good, and PS3 copied the wireless sensors. The other companies should not even try. Mario Strikers rules!
Jimmay @ Aug 15th 2006 2:37PM
I thought the single player was fun. Multiplayer lots of fun for 2 people. 3 or 4 didn't seem too fun to me because it was just hard. Because I'd be so used to having a team to myself, when someone else was on it, I'd keep trying to switch to their player but they'd have it and I'd get all confused and things.
Anyone beat it on Legend? I haven't. I'm working on the 3rd cup on legend. Super cup seems impossible now, even on superstar, super cup is impossibly hard to me.
Jake @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:06PM
I cannot wait to get my hands on that console. it is so unbelievably sweet! and for a great price. Mario Strikers Charged will only make the system better. I only hope they come up with an easy way to control it or use a gamecube controller. Check out wii.ign.com for the trailer to Mario Strikers Charged.
