A video review of Star Fox Command

Using the already released Japanese version of Star Fox Command for the DS, YouTube user Joshua Zimmerman takes us on a 9-minute journey through the world of this anticipated title.
Highlights include the use of controlling the ship via the touch pad and what "taps" are needed to do specific moves. In the vid, we also get to see a what our Wi-Fi experience will be like.
The only real negatives or concerns expressed have to do with the sounds of the game. Zimmerman describes most of them as "annoying." Should be no matter, though, since most of us here play with the sound off. Overall, we'd say the game looks pretty good and can't wait to get our grubby hands on it.

The game looks sweet. I will be there on its release date to score a copy. I'm also stoked for Mario 3 on 3 and the Yoshi's island sequel. All 3 are AAA franchises, and usually a good to excellent game spawns from Nintendo's 1st party IPs.
Petrie @ Aug 7th 2006 2:36PM
This is one instance where I think the touch pad is going to ruin what otherwise could have been an awesome experience. I may be skipping this title even though I've picked up every major DS release thus far, this is just too bad.
Babylonian @ Aug 7th 2006 2:36PM
Your comments: Joystiq writers play with the sound off? Why? I'm guessing you guys didn't import Ouendan.
But holy freaking crap this kid is annoying. He's trying to be Cabel, but he obviously hasn't left his house any time over the past 15 years that his life's consisted of. I think that whole apathetic 'I-don't-care-about-anything-check-out-how-cool-I-am' persona quit seeming clever around fifth grade. Maybe that's just me.
"...Peppy's daugher who no one really cares about. She's just in there for thegirls. That's why her spaceship has a heart on the side of it. Wedon't really care."
C'mon, Joystiq, this kid does not deserve our time! I don't know if the game needs to be played muted, but this video certainly does.
Stenz @ Aug 7th 2006 2:56PM
Just as he was upset by the annoying noises in the game and turned the sound off... I was upset with the annoying commentary and turned my sound off half way through the video. I don't believe I've ever heard anyone say "I don't care," so frequently.

From this picture,
it look like PSP on the touch screen. PSP Rulez

I kind of want to punch someone in the face just listening to this guy's voice.
karmaghost @ Aug 7th 2006 2:59PM
I've noticed Nintendo's WFC takes forever to find people, even with Mario Kart which is one of the most popular games for the DS.
I don't blame this guy for wanting to make a video review like this; Cabel's reviews were awesome and were one of the major reasons I bought a DS Lite.
My question is, will lefties be able to play this? Probably.
Rare Hare @ Aug 7th 2006 3:00PM
I'm totally with Babylonian here, at least on the subject of you guys playing with the sound of.
I don't own a very extensive library for my DS, but the endeating songs on the games are one of the things i've noticed the most. No matter what I'm playing, whether it be a 2 hour Big Brain Academy session agaisnt my cousin or a quick game of Mario Kart while I'm waiting for my ramen noodle water to boil, I always end up with the songs stuck in my head for a good long time afterwards. And the thing is, they're sogns I enjoybeing stuck there. The sound for DS games is surprisingly marvelous, and I honestly think that you guys are missing a big part of the game by ignoring it.
About the video, I don't know. I haven't watched it yet. @Babylonian: At least we get a nine minute video of the StarFox in-game footage. If the kid is as irritating and immature as you say though, I agree that it makes me cringe a little to see him featured on our beloved Joystiq.
Off to actually watch the video now.

what the heck is going on.

I agree #2. I mean, I appreciate the fact that this guy spent time making a video review. But, I gotta say, I find this person's voice horribly annoying. I can't put my finger on it, but I haven't even seen him and I just want to punch him the face. His voice just reeks of adolescent arrogance. Oh well, the game does look like it could be fun
Rare Hare @ Aug 7th 2006 3:14PM
Ok, I just got finished watching the video. While I watching it, the comments some of you made about the reviewer went through my mind and I absolutely agreed with all of them.
Just by listening to this guy, you know he's the kind of kid who has probably had the shit beat out of him a few times, just for being a snotty little reclusive nerd.
If someone else wanted to punch him, I'd hold him.
Babylonian @ Aug 7th 2006 3:21PM
I don't normally comment twice, but the part about him "not really trying" in online multiplayer? Holy shit, did he just get defensive about his ability to play a video game while manning a camera? Wow.
JRM @ Aug 7th 2006 3:31PM
for a guy who's taken the time to make a movie, and upload it to the world, he sure doesn't care much about it.
The guy is obviously a "rich boy" show-off. Aren't they always the ones that show off their toys, are well spoken, but insincere as hell?
All Your Lost Socks @ Aug 7th 2006 3:51PM
I don't know how one can consistently play games with the sound off. When I remember games that I've played in the past, especially when I was younger, I remember the music that went along with the sights, and from the original starfox, that was a big part of it.
When it comes to the DS... geez! Have you guys not played Tetris on that thing? I plugged my stereo headphones into it (while crusading to my goal of maxing out the level/line bars - level 650 so far :D), and had my face rocked off by a mixture of nostalgia and techno. Turn your sound on, guys, sheesh =/
cp @ Aug 7th 2006 3:54PM
He did a good job mentioning the 9 endings, the 15+ playable characters/vehicles, the boss fight mechanics, and that every button, not just the D-pad, is a fire button...
Oh, wait. I guess that for someone who's played only 75% of Star Fox games it's OK to call yourself a big fan of the series and do a review after playing two levels of a game in a language you can't read. We really appreciate it.
Sub @ Aug 7th 2006 3:54PM
How about some comments on the game instead of the guy and his voice?
cringer8 @ Aug 7th 2006 3:59PM
This game is going to take over my Lite. Dog fighting with the stylus is going to be an awesome, intuitive experience. I hope they let me invert the Y-Axis, however.
I'll meet you guys on Wi-Fi.
*Side Note* This fat kid in the video should have just shown the game. I don't need him patronizing me by explaining EVERYTHING that is going through his head.
Ian @ Aug 7th 2006 4:15PM
Jesus Christ people stop harrasing the guy. I mean I didn't really like all the times he said blah blah blah and crap like that but he got the jist down. Especially for having a JPN version which he couldn't read the instructions or story on. And #13, he said he didn't like the cube one (adventures) he didn't say he didn't have it. I don't have a DS but this game looks crappy IMO and the gameplay in general looks weird.
RadicalReactor @ Aug 7th 2006 4:22PM
Why did you skip out on the BOMB?!
Joshua Zimmerman, you disappoint.
As far as Command goes: Very skeptical about controls. I was very dissatisfied with Assault's Arwing. The boost rumble and overall Arwing control felt terribly weak, and hardly like an aircraft of great power. Mid-air stalling via brakes? Come on.
I fear that the feel of the game will feel like Assault's "light/weak" feeling Arwing as opposed to the "heavy" feel in SF64's Arwing. I hope each of the other ships (Wolfen I/II?) have different feels to them.
Although ultimately skeptical, I'm still looking forward to the game and may eventually pick it up on launch.
T. Holbrook Walker @ Aug 7th 2006 4:26PM
Thanks for the footage, but this was an exceptionally bad "review."
Cody S. @ Aug 7th 2006 4:58PM
I really liked Starfox Adventures. This kid has no taste.
makesevevenupyours @ Aug 7th 2006 6:00PM
first off, i have watched this guys ds browser review too...not a fan of him. but oh well.
and do they have other choices for controlls perhaphs? metroid has different controll modes(though i use the default one).
i really like the touch screen for shooter games, but im still not totally sure about this one. it seems like dpad play ab, xy would work fine on this...
reguardless, i think it looks like a solid game.
and btw, CABEL RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULES!!
ill trooper @ Aug 7th 2006 6:03PM
"Blah Blah Blah, I don't really care, We don't really care..."
I think if they removes those phrases from his 'review' vocabulary, he'll be fine. It was cool seeing the game in motion - I didn't know that you used the touch screen for control... Seems sorta lame, but I haven't played it.
darryl @ Aug 7th 2006 8:40PM
Thought it would be better than that :(
Phil Beveridge @ Aug 9th 2006 2:04PM
#7 - There's no need to change the controls for lefties... Pressing any button on the DS (bar Start) shoots anyway, so you could use any shouldre button or whatever's more comfortable for you.
I just got this game, as well as Mario Hoops 3 on 3 and Project Hacker today. I don't really like it that much, but I've never been a big fan of the Starfox series TBH
jgrey @ Aug 11th 2006 8:16PM
I never noticed that sound is annoying. I bought this on the day of release and been playing it since, but the only possible complaint is that sometimes it causes too much strain in your hands, like Metroid Prime Hunters.
Even that went once I got used to it.
Dan "X" J. @ Aug 14th 2006 9:05PM
When he says "I don't care" when he mentions the dialouge, he means he doesn't understand the language, so he doesn't care about what they say, but everything else means that you think he's going to hate the game when he really likes it. I would agree that some of the sounds are annoying, but not ALL of them!
This next comment doesn't have to do with the reviewer, but I would like to complain that they didn't put any voiceover in this game whatsoever. Almost all of the Star Fox games have voiceover. The DS games are capable of having voiceover instead of gibberish in them, just like the N64. WHY DIDN'T THEY PUT THEM IN HERE, FOR PETE'S SAKE? IS IT BECAUSE THEY'RE LAZY. I would accept it if the cart didn't have enough memory left, but otherwise, it's unforgivable.
So those are my complaints about the (gay-sounding) reviewer and the developers of this anticipated Star Fox game. If I had my own money and am allowed to drive a car, I would probably get this game since I only have Mario Kart DS as a Wi-Fi connection game. However, if the "get more stars than your opponent" mode on the Wi-Fi mode is the only one, I would probably play more of Mario Kart DS than Star Fox Command in Wi-Fi mode, then. Otherwise, I would play it as many times as I can (and be the best I can, too since I'm doing well with Mario Kart DS).
