Prince of Persia now confirmed for Wii

After last week's French slip that Prince of Persia will be making an appearance on the Wii, the company has now confirmed -- in English -- that the game is in fact coming to the console.
A spokesperson for Ubisoft told IGN that PoP will be a Wii title: "I can confirm that a game based on the popular Prince of Persia franchise is one of many titles Ubisoft has in development for Nintendo's Wii. At this time we can not provide an official date for the game or any additional information about it."
There, glad that that's settled. Let the Wiimote use speculation commence.

I cant believe only me and some dude named hank gave the heads up for this huge story!Anyways this just proves all the skeptics wrong that the wii wasnt gonna have any action games like ps3 and 360.Also this is the 8th confirmed game from ubisoft so i think the third party support is there.

Twisted sister. Twisted.
Geist @ Aug 7th 2006 7:50PM
Because it's not confirmed if it's not in English!
:p
Anyway, is this going to be an original game, or will it be on the other consoles as well? Or is it taking a Resident Evil-style approach, and releasing a different game on the Wii than on the others?
Babylonian @ Aug 7th 2006 8:12PM
Bravo Ubisoft. I don't think they could support the Wii any more if they tried.
Magnj @ Aug 7th 2006 8:15PM
Awesome. This series is great and I'm sure the Wiimote will only make it more interesting.

Third party suport isn't a question. For now. It's how long will they continue to support. Changing gaming as we now know it (which happens to be something that Nintendo does...a lot) is charting new territory for developers. I myself hope that they continue with their support (I am a Nintendo Fan), I just hope they use the Wii-mote in a more-than-superficial way. It may take them a little time at first, so let's hope they stay the course.

Wow, when it comes to support for Nintendo's next system, this French publisher has been saying "oui" a lot.
John B @ Aug 7th 2006 8:42PM
The only Wii-enhanced port I would be interested in is Sands of Time. The others weren't half as good. :-P But even more likely it will be an original game, as they seem to be backing the Wii pretty strongly.

It's exciting news to find out about all these great upcoming games. Including al the other announced titles for the other major consoles, this next year will be a great one for gamers. I admire all the risks that a lot of companies are taking--especially with the Wii's radical contribution to the market.

TO JOYSTIQ:
While on the subject of Wii launch titles, is it possible that you could provide to us a list of all confirmed launch titles for the Wii up to this point? I'm compiling in my mind what titles I plan on picking up to play on the system when it comes out, and a list of what will definately be available would help so much.
Thanks.

This is great news! Ubi is really impressive with their Wii support, I think they are running the gamble that the Wii will be a hit (of course it will!) and they will be one of the first majors there to take advantage of it.

Why are people paying 50 bucks to play a game they've played before and yet bitch at 60 because production values are SIGNIFICANTLY higher, is out of my imagination. Definately a ripoff.
I lose respect on Wii developers being 1/4 hearted on projects. Too bad for a console being in a class on its own, eh?
Lou D @ Aug 8th 2006 7:52AM
The high production values come from having to put in more than triple the resolution into your textures as well as mastering the sound into true digital 5.1 Dolby. These are not rquirements of the Wii, hence lower development costs.
The Wii will have better graphics than the original Xbox. 720x480p is plenty for me even though my TV supports 1080i...not that I could tell the difference between 1080i and 720p other than a ever so slight flicker in 1080i.
Personally, I think if the Wii can play DVD's with an attachment, then it should be able to do 540p. That will scale nicely to 1080. So maybe over time, Wii games will look better as Nintendo released a devkit that enables 540p to developers in 2 years. This is like what they did on the N64 once they couldn't dent PS1 sales...they allowed N64 games to go 640x480. Madden was the first to do it as the N64 version looked way better than the PS1 version. South Park was another, I believe.

I agree with #13 wholeheartedly. I loved playing Metroid Prime on my HD set in "only" 480p. Seriously, it kicked ass. The only thing I want nintendo to do this time around is include widescreen modes. Most Cube games didn't have this (but from what I understand the Wii version of Zelda will be in widescreen!).
Seriously, 480p or 540p is excellent rez to play.

Far Cry and Prince of Persia are going to be new games for the Wii. Sure the Wii will see lots of ports, but if you haven't played them, they are still new to you. Example... LoZ:TP will be the hottest game at Wii launch, yet it's a port from the GC.
Compare that to the large chunk of XBOX360 games out there that feature not much beyond their current-gen versions except updated graphics.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Gun
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
Fight Night: Round 3
Far Cry: Instincts — Predator
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend
NCAA Football 07
Madden NFL 07
Hitman: Blood Money
Call of Duty 2
etc
I hope developers start to change ports to be optimized for Wii control, but you can't say ports aren't a reality elsewhere. And plenty of franchises will be ported over with new games on the Wii, just like FC and PoP. And I'm happy with that, more games = better.
vidGuy @ Aug 8th 2006 9:20AM
@Woody,
From a quick browse through google links, it seems as though the widescreen option will be left up to developers (who obviously have to make the game optimized for widescreen for it to look right), but all the games shown so far were presented in widescreen. It seems like most, if not all, the launch titles will be playable in either 4:3 or 16:9... LoZ:TP, Red Steel, MP3, Wii Sports, etc.
Hopefully Nintendo is mandating widescreen like they are with screenshots, which must be accompained by a picture that shows how the remote is being used.
Anybody have a definitive quote from Nintendo about Wii use of widescreen?

#12: Where did you get the idea that this is a port?
Chino @ Aug 8th 2006 1:28PM
I have been totally into these games since it was on a pc and I had a crappy monitor that made everyones skin magenta. Cant wait.
