Metroid tattoo, plus baggage
Over on Live Journal, 'Mad Mel' has whipped out her Metroid hatchling tat'. Nice. Apparently, she ain't the only one feelin' the 'troid ink. The comments section of her post reveals a whole gang of fanboys & girls willing to wear this obsession on their skins. What franchise would you be willing to bleed for?Fun factoid: not only is Mel a self-proclaimed Metroid fanatic since the 3rd grade, she's also a talented artist. Check out her piece dedicated to all the "scumbag guys out there." Or perhaps you'd prefer her mannequin work.

...what?
dsub @ Aug 8th 2006 5:56PM
Ninja Gaiden or Resident Evil for sure.
cringer8 @ Aug 8th 2006 5:58PM
I don't think you have to be a "fanboy" to get a tattoo of a game character. If the character looks cool as a tat, go for it.
A Metroid tattoo doesn't *automatically* mean you don't like Sony and MS, or that you believe Nintendo is God. You just like Metroid.
Just be cautious with the use of such an inflammatory label.
MP @ Aug 8th 2006 5:58PM
Have we run out of news today, Joystiq?
Stoli @ Aug 8th 2006 6:00PM
Umm...yeah, it's a nice tattoo, but there are way better ones (as in bigger and more detailed) at http://community.livejournal.com/gamingtattoos. Not to diss on "Mad Mel's" tat; it's a cute little Metroid. :)
AoE @ Aug 8th 2006 6:00PM
"she's also a talented artist." *sigh* Marcel Duchamp... did you know what you were getting us into? DID YOU? I understand that yours was more a philosophical movement, rallying against the institution that art had become. But look at the fallout. This is the result. Are you rolling in your grave, or what?
That being said, cool tat.
Stu @ Aug 8th 2006 6:06PM
The only thing I would consider for a tattoo would be the Triforce.
TC @ Aug 8th 2006 6:07PM
Cool tat? It looks like she's got skin cancer.
Enzo @ Aug 8th 2006 6:11PM
I have an unfinished Sonic tattoo (all my tattoos are unfinished for that matter). In the future he will be joined by toejam, chuck d. head, and the bonanza bros.
I'll definitely get something involving resident evil at some point
AcceptableRisk @ Aug 8th 2006 6:11PM
I've thought in the past that if I were to ever get a tattoo, it would probably be a Metroid. One of the only things giving me pause is the fact that I can't stand the recent Metroid games. My all time favorite game is Super Metroid. Perhaps for that reason, Metroid Prime is just anathema to me. I've tried to play through it several times and I just can't do it. At first I thought that it might have been because it was 3D but I see Fusion as a slight against humanity.
It's bad seeing your favorite series get a bad sequel and then get brushed aside to fade away. It's another thing entirely when your favorite property gets game after game that make you all but physically ill.
Lutraphobic @ Aug 8th 2006 6:13PM
Yeah MP, because Joystiq is a NEWS site, and not a gaming blog.
Dizzy the Egg @ Aug 8th 2006 6:14PM
at least she will leave an easily identifiable corpse
BennoWii @ Aug 8th 2006 6:16PM
I have a feeling I won't be seeing any of those mannequins in any storefront windows.
Babylonian @ Aug 8th 2006 6:39PM
News site or gaming blog, I don't see why she got any attention.
bv @ Aug 8th 2006 6:40PM
If i ever got a gaming tattoo it would probably be the ninja and dog from shadow dancer or maybe alex kidd on a motorcycle. It's all about sega for me.
frodo @ Aug 8th 2006 6:49PM
There's new gaming tats being posted on the gaming tattoos lj group everyday. Maybe a Joystiq post each time it updates is in order?
Gnac @ Aug 8th 2006 6:57PM
I got a 1up mushroom tattooed on my glans. I don't think I can post pics here though.
AoE @ Aug 8th 2006 7:08PM
"News site or gaming blog, I don't see why she got any attention."
Don't be daft Babylonian. Clearly someone wants to get into her pants. "Nice tatoo, I'll promote your LJ on my video game blog baby. But first, let's visit the... um.. 'blogging' couch."
Spytap @ Aug 8th 2006 7:30PM
The Triforce. Already in the works ;)

(I also have a large, full-color seal of Transylvania Polygnostic University across my chest, but you'll have to use your imagination.)

What franchise would I bleed for?
Earthbound, matey.
moofree @ Aug 8th 2006 9:30PM
How about a slime from Dragon Quest!
32_footsteps @ Aug 8th 2006 9:49PM
I'd go for DDR arrows on the tops of my feet. Maybe a Mewtwo in battle pose on my shoulder. Or, if I felt really adventurous, some of the Amano art from Final Fantasy 4 on my back.
This, of course, is presuming I'd somehow prevent keloids from forming and my wife magically decided it was alright for me to get a tattoo. The former is highly unlikely and the latter is near impossible.
Mark @ Aug 8th 2006 11:40PM
Emo pics ftl.
Rare Hare @ Aug 9th 2006 4:30AM
I've actually often considered a portrait of Samus somewhere, and perhaps a similar sized tat of Cloud from FF7 (preferably the shot of him from the box art, in which his back is turned to you).
The Mortal Kombat logo could also be pretty cool, and so would something from my one true love, Diablo II.
I actually doubt I'd ever get a video game tatoo. But it's fun to think about it :)
raistlinsghost @ Aug 9th 2006 6:29AM
I got a tattoo done of the Zanarakand Abes logo adorned by Tidus in FFX a few years ago.
I decided on that symbol because I was so moved by the character's death and eventual rebirth that was only made possible from the strength of Yuna's love for him. It moved me because that is really how I feel about my wife: That I would be as insubstatial as a dream if not for her love for me.
And no, I'm not scoring points with her with the above comments; there is a 0% chance of her ever reading them.

i intend to get an entire sleeve of nes sprites. i just need to get the cash ($1500) and a layout. its really hard to make them all flow together without being too confusing since theyre so pixely.
OtakuCODE @ Aug 9th 2006 9:47AM
I'd have to go along with Kyle. Earthbound. More likely the Nes from the original Mother game, since it was the first in the series I played. I didn't find Earthbound until way late, never having had an SNES when I was a kid. I ended up getting the Earthbound 0 rom (translated Mother 1 from Japan... translated by Nintendo but never released because they were dumber than dirt) and then playing it all the way through, followed by the SNES Earthbound. Always thought the sprint of Nes would be perfect.
Might be willing to get a tattoo of a sprite from the original Legend of Zelda as well, as I don't see that as a desire of mine that will ever fade. I love it as much now as I did when I was 9.
darryl @ Aug 9th 2006 10:19AM
Lame.... Oh, woe is me.
Sana @ Aug 9th 2006 11:30AM
OK, I'll join in on this one. Talking about getting a gaming tattoo and actually DOING it, obviously very different things. I thought about it for years, went through various designs and ended up...with it:

Horde FTW (OK, *now* you are all free to start with the name calling ;)
Mad Mel @ Aug 9th 2006 2:42PM
Thanks a fucking lot for asking for my permission about this.
stagl @ Aug 9th 2006 4:44PM
you posted it on the fucking internet, what do you expect?
airpolgas @ Aug 9th 2006 7:02PM
stagl, she's just emoting her "anger." You should have been able to tell by visiting the "read" link that she's a badass, and she does not compromise, and she has this fuck you attitude, right? dunno why it angered her though, considering apart from #8, everyone seems to think the tat was cool.
Mad Mel @ Aug 9th 2006 7:38PM
Sorry, I'm really not angry at all. I'm just shocked and confused why I'm on here.
Rare Hare @ Aug 9th 2006 7:59PM
"Sorry, I'm really not angry at all. I'm just shocked and confused why I'm on here. "
Well, you kind off (and by kind of I mean you did. You totally did) came off as hostile and bitchy. If you blog about it in a place where others are intended to notice, don't expect people to just not take any interest in it. That's what personal journals are for.
