Square Enix talks up innovation, hints at new hardware
Though you might be inclined to give Square Enix president, Yoichi Wada, an incredulous stare as he discusses the merits of innovation before the release of Final Fantasy Thirteen, a recent interview with Nikkei Business Online points to his fairly levelheaded approach to the topic. "If we don't see some [next-generation] titles that differ from traditional games, the industry is in trouble. Nintendo's DS lineup gives you an idea of the potential..." However, Mr. Wada goes on to say that immmediately tossing out all previous conventions and concepts isn't necessarily the best solution. "We must change. But if we change all at once, the system will collapse, and since our profits are built on that system, it's a difficult question. So you have to introduce change from a completely unrelated direction within a separate budget framework. This is something all the companies are worrying about right now. Fortunately, we're financially prepared to handle change." It raises the interesting point that change may be easy to trumpet but difficult to usher in, requiring gradual steps and some assistance from current franchises. The earlier point regarding the DS' success is an interesting one, since Nintendo's many franchises and characters were arguably instrumental in introducing a different way of playing games.
The ability of unique hardware to funnel innovation in certain ways also intrigues Square, which is why "Square Enix will collaborate with Taito, a company that produces physical hardware. In our talks with Taito, ideas for an actual physical product have come up. In any case, we will be releasing some 'thing.' It's interesting in that it's not the sort of thing you expect from Square Enix." With that in mind, we now can't wait to play some sort of Final Fantasy game on a Square Enix thing at an undisclosed time in the future.

Wow, If Square Enix make their own system... That would be just another blow for Sony!!!!
randomdouche @ Aug 8th 2006 1:37PM
So if they release thier own system does that mean that FF and everything Square related will be exclusive to it's little console. If so that would be another blow to Sony as Marty put it.

I bet it's a cell phone that plays games like the n-gage, hehehe.

Er, probably not.
Taito doesn't make home console hardware. Square is obviously talking about arcade hardware and possibly a plug and play home device.
Also, people think of Square Enix as being the FF/DQ company in this country (and to some extent, the Japanese feel that way too). But they make dozens of games per year in all different genres, although more RPG's than anything else. Most of their games are not released here. This is just their PS2 output, for example: http://www.square-enix.com/jp/game/ps2/
My guess is they are talking about making some sort of arcade-style plug and play game with Taito, in the vein of Bust-a-Groove (which was Enix). Or possibly a sports title.

It's not gong to be a console.
Taito makes arcade boxes, though. Arcades are huge in Japan, so that is the market they're most likely targeting with this partnership.
dish @ Aug 8th 2006 1:58PM
i really dont think it would be a plug-in-play nor an arcade system.. they are talking about inovation here right?
Ghost Box @ Aug 8th 2006 2:02PM
#1 are you sure it's a console?
This doesn't sound to me like a new console. This seems more like a portable device with some kind of physical interaction beyond pad buttons.
Portable devices are the absolute rage in Japan. They are not only more popular than consoles, they out sell them in increasing margins year after year.
Portables are very sexy, and every hardware and software manufacturer seems to want one to offer to consumers. So expect the portable device market to become even more crowded than Apple, Nintendo or Sony ever planned.

@ dish
Do arcade machines suddenly lack the potential for innovation? That would be a silly thing to think.
Marty @ Aug 8th 2006 2:48PM
Ok.. I never said it was a console, I said IF it were.... So pull your pants out of your crack and quit getting so angry.
Honestly though, I don't see why they wouldn't go console. Handhelds are a hard market to break into... How many companies have made successful Handhelds and went on to make a sequel to that handheld that is successful. 1- (sony is working on being the second.)
And just because a company hasn't made a console before doesn't mean they wont. Does Microsoft ring a bell. What about SNK or Sony. (and look how Sony did!!!)
And like Nintendo... Square Enix has the franchises to back up their system (something M$ couldn't do too well).
Now will it be a home console... don't know but they way they talk about innovation it seems like it might be. There already is innovation in the arcades so that doesn't sound too accurate. And I don't really see them trying to go into the hard to crack handheld market because too many have tried and failed.

I find that article immmemorable and immmpressive.

@ Marty - Who got angry? o.O *picks wedgie as per request*
Anyway, I'm more inclined to think it's a console accessory, but it's hard to say what. When they say it's something we shouldn't expect, it makes it hard to speculate based on what either of them have done in the past. The hard drive released with FFXI doesn't count. :P The partnership with Taito doesn't restrict them to classic arcade style ventures, either. This is a partnership, not Taito being called on by Square Enix. I prefer to let the mystery boil rather than wondering what it might actually -be-, personally. :)

Microsoft has its own game studios plus Bungie.
We ave all seen what halo can do at launch...
Wolfrain @ Aug 8th 2006 3:24PM
You guys are missing the big picture. Just because they are going to join forces with a hardware maker does not mean they will make console or handhelds. What about accesories to games like axe guitar in Guitar Hero or the microphone in Singstar. With the power of Xbox 360 and PS3 and the add on feature of the PS3 Dualshake and Wiimote makes this possible? It is much cheaper and not too much of a risk. Seriously does the console market or handheld market need another entry?
futurebiblehero @ Aug 8th 2006 4:41PM
It's only natural for Square to see what a big player they are in the so called "console wars" and want a bigger piece of the pie. Square has the same kind of brand loyalty that Nintendo has, and we all buy Nintendo systems so we can play Nintendo games. From the way it looks, they're simply cashing in on this truth. Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are arguably even larger system sellers than even Mario or Zelda these days.
I'm no Square fanboy, but I'd entertain the thought of buying a system from them if reasonably priced. At least then I wouldn't have to play the guessing game on figuring out what system I'll be playing Dragon Quest on.

If I remember correctly; Sega sold pinball machines before they developed the Sega Master System (8 bit competitor that got STOMPED by the NES).
I can easily see SquareEnix making their own console. Think about it; how many gaurenteed customers will they get if there console will be the only with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts... and the list goes on. This will be interesting to watch.

As big as Square Enix is, I don't think they have the same worldwide resources as a Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft. Even if they did release their own console, I don't think they have the resources to pull in the non-square fanatics.
I bet it's something along the lines of a specific add on, a la a dance dance revolution mat or guitar hero guitar. Both of those games have seen a lot of success (to make no mention of light gun games that have been around) and he mentioned the DS as a good example, which includes a bit more interactivity then your typical system
