PS3: 2 down, 200+ still in the works
PS3Land.com reminds us that the recent cancellation of two PlayStation 3 titles, FROM Software's Dark RPG and Black Blade, is not indicative of an impending domino effect. According to PS3Land, there are currently over 200 games planned for release on PS3, and that number is only going to grow.So why are some of us so eager to sniff out the first signs of the PlayStation brand's demise? What makes a gamer anti-Sony? It seems that there is a growing suspicion -- among gamers, the media, and even developers -- concerning Sony's tactics. There's no denying that PS2 was (and is) a phenomenal success. But the PSP (sans homebrew) has been so darn stagnant. And the PS3 ... it's gonna be so frickin' expensive.
Is the everyday consumer, the one who likes to keep a current gaming system handy (mostly for Madden), gonna bite this time around? Will said consumer, who's never experienced a geek-out, really care about Blu-ray? And what about you? What do you make of this emerging bitterness? Are the underdog fanboys just jealous ... just using these fleeting pre-launch days to tarnish, however futilely, the PlayStation brand? Or is Sony actually doing some things wrong? Like, really wrong.

Hmmm I wonder if this is in response to the Joystiq "Anti-Sony" accusations recently :)
Ethan @ Aug 10th 2006 1:00PM
"Are the underdog fanboys just jealous ... just using these fleeting pre-launch days to tarnish, however futilely, the PlayStation brand?" ding ding ding! we have a winner!
Michael @ Aug 10th 2006 1:04PM
I don't blame Joystiq for anti-sony stuff, seriously.
Since E3 I've experienced nothing but just hate towards Sony for everything. I really can't explain why but they just bug the shit out of me this time around.
Todd @ Aug 10th 2006 1:05PM
How expensive are these games going to be? I'll need to know this before I forgo paying rent for the month just to buy the expensive PS3.
Evan @ Aug 10th 2006 1:05PM
I'll have to agree in the fact that the price is already alienating huge masses of people and will continue to do so when it's released. Since I work at a gaming retail store, I can see people's reactions first hand. Every consumer that isn't a huge video game nerd is completely put off by the PS3 and it's various price points. Even moderate video game users feel betrayed by the high price and the potentially high price of its games.
Tim @ Aug 10th 2006 1:08PM
People are anti-sony for a number of reasons already specified - mainly the obsene price and unproven technology. I own a PS and PS2 and love them, but I'm not buying a PS3. Sony has shown me nothing to warrant such a expensive purchace.
confucious say fanboy don't know better .. . @ Aug 10th 2006 1:09PM
it's always easy to hate the person on top .. . to hate what you don't understand (blue-ray, cell)is just natural .. . and at the moment playstation is the person on top .. .
playstation is hated because it is the biggest target to hate .. .
LunarDuality @ Aug 10th 2006 1:11PM
I think that the PS3 will be successful, but to what degree? That is the real question on everyone's mind. I think that people do have a solid concern when referring to the price.
The question that I will ask is does the *price* match the *value*. For me, Blu-ray is unimportant and therefore doesn't add value for me. For others, it is the chief reason for getting a PS3 in the first place, and to them it is valuable.
Right now, it's hard to say what will happen because obviously the biggest things that will affect this race are the games (what's exclusive to each platform) and the services that are provided (How is Sony's online platform really gonna shake out?). The problem is, no one can really say at this point whether Sony is doing it right or wrong because we don't *know* what they are doing since it's not even out yet.
However, their PR people have been running around trying to put out fires for the past couple months which is not a good sign, but it's certainly not a death knell.
Jay @ Aug 10th 2006 1:11PM
I think part of the problem is that people feel a certain sense of betrayal by Sony. Consumers made the Playstation and PS2 successful .. it was their money that drove the engine that is Sony. Remember, Sony was a slipping brand at the time consumers embraced the console.
In return, consumers get repeated public statements that Sony is the reason for Sony's success and people will buy anything at any price from Sony.
Brands are sold by the stories behind those brands -- Ben & Jerry's ice cream created a mystique, so did Nike ... Sony did as well, then shattered it with arrogance. So now, people are disillusioned and looking for new "heroes" ... why do you suppose there is such a sudden upswell in sentiment for Nintendo?
ymmv @ Aug 10th 2006 1:16PM
I'm a Sony fan. I have had Sony TVs, receivers, CD players and of course the Playstation 1 and 2. The PSX was in fact my first console, the PS2 was its natural successor and the PS3 would naturally follow. But things have changed. I got a Xbox for its mediacenter capabilities and liked it a lot. Then I bought an Xbox 360 last year which was also a great purpose. And then cae things like E3, the Blu-Ray fiasco, the hight price, etc etc.
The price of the PS3 doesn't bother me too much, I can easily afford it. What does bother me is the price-features ratio. I don't want to buy into a next gen DVD-player untill that format war has a clearcut winner. I don't want to pay more for a PS3 so that Sony can push its own technology down the consumer's throat on a massive scale. Apart from Blu-Ray, I'm not convinced that the PS3 will faster of feature better visuals than the 360. Plus I'm more excited by the upcoming Xbox 360 games than the PS3 games roster.
Six months ago I was convinced I'd put the PS3 beside my 360, but now I'm going to wait for the price to drop and the games catalogue to become more enticing.
Blue Spotted Frog @ Aug 10th 2006 1:16PM
I think the underlying root of all the PS3 hate is simply the price of the PS3. If there were just one PS3 SKU for $400 USD, there wouldn't be any more negativity towards Sony than towards Microsoft or Nintendo.
LK @ Aug 10th 2006 1:16PM
"Riiiiiidge Raceeer!"
Ben-T @ Aug 10th 2006 1:17PM
I'd like to get the PS3, but I can't shell out 500 dollars. I'll stick to PC and 360.
jc @ Aug 10th 2006 1:20PM
For me, I started losing trust in Sony when the RootKit fiasco happened. Then came the comment about how Ken wanted me to work a second job to afford his computer called PS3... and all the crazy comments since. I don't hate the company as a whole (I just bought a grand wega), I just don't feel the PS3 is for me (I still play my PS2 with the g/f every weekend).
I don't trust Sony, plain and simple.
I sat down this spring, and took a good look at what everyone was offering... and decided that the X360 had the games that I wanted to play.
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Aug 10th 2006 1:21PM
People need to lay off the PSP. I love the DS, and I hated the idea of the PSP at first because I didn't want the GBA era of gaming to ever end, but any retro-hearted people out there need to start giving the PSP a serious look. Capcom, Konami, and Namco have really gone balls-to-the-wall for this system, and there are multiple great retro games and RPGSs to be had for the system that was previously chastized for being a bunch of PS2 ports. Plus, Loco Roco rocks, and you KNOW THIS, so don't even try to deny it.
Felix Andrews @ Aug 10th 2006 1:23PM
Every company makes tactical errors. The fact of the matter is that right now, Sony is making several times more than most.
logikil @ Aug 10th 2006 1:24PM
In the last generation of games i would definitely say i was much more an Xbox fan than any other system. I did eventually own all three but the Xbox for me ended up as the best system. So naturally i moved from that to the 360, and i am very much pleased.
Now the Wii and PS3 are interesting proposistions to me. I will undoubtedly own all 3 at one point....it's just how i roll, but which and when are questions. The PS3 is simply too expensive early on for me to justify. I already spent more then on any other machine that i have purchased to date in order to buy the 360, so the wii for me is the logical next choice. When the PS3 actual sku drops down to around 299-399 that is when i will look to pick it up.
That said i do think Sony has made some serious missteps, and the Sony Fanboys that are completely ignorant to that really show their colors. What strikes me most is that there isn't much coming out of Sony to counteract the bad news. That's expected of Nintendo, they never talk, but the only talk you hear out of Sony only servers to spread the bad news even more. That's what puts some of us off.
And if the sony fanboys really think that college kids and casual Madden players are gonna drop $600 dollars for the PS3 to play a game of madden that looks exactly the same on a $400 dollar 360, you might want to think again.
My 2 cents. Peace.
joystiq + nintendo = true love @ Aug 10th 2006 1:26PM
Since when is the PSP 'so darn stagnant'? It has more highly rated AA+ titles than the darling of the media, the DS. Go to Metacritic or Gamerankings and see how many of the recent releases are doing critic-wise. The upcoming games look great. It's likely sold about 18 million vs. the DS's 21 million worldwide - an unprecedented success considering the DS has a 4 million unit head start in early 2005 and Nintendo's historic headlock on the handheld market.
The anti-PS3 crap is almost all media hype. Joystiq signs on to the sensationalist mentality to garner hits and bolster their clickthru advertisers. The Nintendo fanboys (who have always been the most aggro, in-denial and disproportionately vocal gamer group) ratchet up the volume and make the 'public' sound anti-Sony.
Every gamer I know is looking forward to the PS3. Every PSP owning friend I know (6) still loves it and has no plans to buy any other handheld.
Joystiq is anti-Sony. Nintendo fans are anti-Sony. Everyone else is just looking forward to a new system to see how it does. Maybe it'll be on top, maybe it'll be second, or even third. Everything at this point is total conjecture colored by bias, and Joystiq is doing a LOT of coloring.

I want Sony to succeed with the PS3 because their success drives the entire industry to greater heights. But I wouldn't mind if they were cut down a few pegs. Sony themselves made me feel this way:
Rampant proprietarism.
"It's a computer, after all" So I can do my homework on it? Whatever.
"It's like fine dining" Great, I'll play it once a month then, about how often I go out for "fine dining"
I won't buy a console "even if it had no games".
And above all, after the easily breakable PS2 I won't risk throwing 600 dollars down the drain only to see "read error" 6 months down the road.
dvnt @ Aug 10th 2006 1:32PM
Why do we want to see Sony fail? Simple. Sorta.
Americans like the underdogs. We don't really care for "the man" blatantly telling us what we will like, buy or do for that matter. When a person or company does this they lose our trust and we want to see them crash and burn. It's encoded into our genes(not literally but you get it) to act this way.
Of course this really only applies to us hardcore non-teenager gamers. Sony still has the vast majority of mindshare among youth and joe consumer who have scarcely heard of all of Sony's recent shenanigans. Which is enough to help them "win" this cycle unfortunately. But we shall see.
steve @ Aug 10th 2006 1:34PM
As I try to figure out when I became anti-Sony, I think back to when I was a kid...
Growing up, having a Sony product stood for everything good in consumer electronics (except maybe price). I have had probably 10+ Sony TV's over the years, several VCR's, DVD players, hell, I even bought one of their camcorders last summer.
However, I've never bought a Playstation system. And these days, I don't think I'll be buying many more of their products.
In the last 3-5 years, their products just aren't of the same quality that they used to be. The TV's crap out earlier, DVD players break sooner than other brands, and they just aren't differentiating themselves enough to justify the price tag anymore.
In the video game arena, these things influence my decision. I feel like Nintendo really loves the games they make, but Sony doesn't seem to care. Their executives are raving imbeciles, and their marketing sucks.
That's why this generation, like the two before it, I'll be passing on the Playstation.
Patrick @ Aug 10th 2006 1:35PM
I just can't past the pricing. Seriously, that's probably the biggest issue here. It's everywhere.
I mean I'll probably buy a PS3 a year or so after it's released just so I can play Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy 13. But until now, the Wii looks very attractive to me because of the pricing and also the games being released for it.
Ethan Thomas @ Aug 10th 2006 1:37PM
I think price has alot to do with it personally. But it's not everything. I could overlook the cost IF they had a ton of software to back it up and weren't so busy telling me that I'm going to buy it anyway. To make what I'm saying in perspective, imagine going into a game store to just take a look at a game you're sorta interested in. You're standing there, looking at the box, and the customer rep walks over to you and says, "You love it. It's the greatest game ever. And that's why you're buying it. You're just going to have to work longer hours to buy the rest of these games, but you will buy them because I said so." Pretty much how Sony comes off. I don't care who you are, don't tell me what I am going to buy or what I'm not going to buy. There's a reason most big investments have options. Cars have tons, as do radios, TV's, etc. The PS3 is Blu-ray no matter what. THEN they say, "Oh, well, how much more are you going to give us..because your buy-in on it is this much, even if you never use half the things." To me, that's bad marketing..although its not any worse than directly telling your customer they will just have to "work harder" or "save up" to get your product...which "doesn't need Grand Theft Auto" or other major games, or even the customer, to be a success. I like to feel appreciated. Sure, MS and Nintendo are corporations after my money. But they don't try to shove me against a wall and steal my wallet to get it. THAT is the difference. And until PS3 comes out, there are no underdogs. I include Nintendo in that because they have already acknowledged that they are in a different market for different consumers..although many people in the PS3/360 market, including myself, may have an interest in their product as well. This holiday will probably see me buying the Wii and putting it next to my 360.
Omar @ Aug 10th 2006 1:38PM
I don't understand the Sony hate that has sprung since the price announcement. Joystiq (and Engadget for that matter) do nothing but pimp out thousand dollar equipment/gadgets day in and day out but somehow the PS3 being $200 more than the 360 all of sudden means Sony sucks. Fan reaction I think is mostly just "go with the crowd" type of mentality. Take my friend, he has a 32" LCD TV and bought the 360 when it came out. He bought the 360, extra controllers, $100 cables, and a bunch of games. He must have spend close to $800 on everything he bought that day. Yet now, he is like everyone else complaining about the PS3's high price. It's all just mob mentality. If an extra $200 is really, really that much of a deal breaker because you simply cannot afford it, then you probably can't afford the initial $400 to begin with...
Darth Pixel @ Aug 10th 2006 1:39PM
In the coming weeks, you will see Joystiq and many other media cozy up to Sony.
They would not want to be left without a PS3 review unit.
Arch @ Aug 10th 2006 1:41PM
those "underground gamers" have just learned. learned that sony likes to BS EVERYTHING to get ahead. like i said. the gamer has LEARNED not to trust them until the product is out.
that is the ONLY reason.
Zero @ Aug 10th 2006 1:42PM
My honest opinion is that if Square-Enix took the main Final Fantasy franchise to another platform, the PS3 would flop faster than the Virtual Boy.
gman @ Aug 10th 2006 1:42PM
yeah you sony fanboys are right...that's why the ds lite is so damn abundant in stores, while the psp just FLIES off the shelves...oh wait.
don't worry kids, sony is crumbling slowly, but you'll get to buy your prescious ps3's before sony falls apart altogether...
anyone seen the blu-ray/hd-dvd comparisons online/at bestbuy/etc ? which one looks better in every way again? ...yeah have fun with that one
Darth Pixel @ Aug 10th 2006 1:42PM
PS3 is more expensive than Xbox 360, by the price of 3 games.
How to afford it:
1) Make a list of 10 games you were planning to buy.
2) Resolve yourself to rent 4 of them.
3) You are done. You just found an easy way to afford it. Congratulations.
[-Z-] @ Aug 10th 2006 1:44PM
@24, I think it's encoded into your gene not ours.
'cause seriously by looking at the the way IPOD,PS2,DS,Lexus are going now, I really doubt what you said just now. IMO Americans look at brand name more than supporting the Underdog.

I love my PS2 - there is no question that it was the best console of the last generation for game selection even if it wasn't the greatest technically. But it's not the price of the PS3 that annoys me, it's how everything out of Sony's mouth these days is a foul cocktail of arrogance and stupidity. They think they can get away with anything just because the PS2 was such a huge success because the PSX was such a huge success - and they did earn that with their hard work. Well it's time they stopped coasting on inertia. These people (Kutaragi, Harrison, Kirai) need to be kicked down to the bottom of the barrel like Nintendo was, then perhaps they can learn like Nintendo has and come back better than before.
DojoRacoon @ Aug 10th 2006 1:47PM
Even the articles that are not anti-sony get the "Joystiq is f**** idiots" treatment. At least from Darryl but I have a suspicion that Nintendo had it's way with his mother or something. His comments always lack any kind of intelligent arguments hence -1 star.
Is Joystiq anti sony? meh. Maybe a good portion of the bloggers are pro nintendo but that hardly makes you anti sony. If you think that fanboys are responsible for all the bad Sony press then you are most likely a fanboy yourself. The media is not owned by Nintendo. Go over to gamespot you will notice only one article on the wii portion of the site has been posted since E3. This seems a little disproportionate.
My point is Joystiq is a group of bloggers that report on news other sites report first. Yeah they editorialize a little bit the skew of they're opinions range depending on the blogger. For the most part I feel that any anti sony spin is because they feel used and betrayed by sony's cockiness not because they have some irrational vendetta against Sony.
There are however bloggers who just tell it like he sees it like Mr. Riley. I've seen him do a good job of pissing off just about everykind of Fanboy I don't always agree with him but I love reading the flame he creates regardless.
Cabbage @ Aug 10th 2006 1:51PM
I think that a good deal of the hate comes from the generally arrogant and out-of-touch comments and actions made by high level Sony reps. Sony talks down the competition and promises big things, but the sting of the PSP not living up to nearly any of the hype is far to recent to be forgotten. PS3+Bluray seems far too similar to PSP+UMD, both new formats trying to supplant the established DVD standard.
After Sony's 2005 E3 press conference, which seemed primarily an attempt to convince people not to buy the 360, the 2006 E3 showed a more realistic view of what is coming. Sony's lackluster games and luxury price tag spread more FUD than anything anyone else could have said, and then they top it off telling us we should feel lucky to only be paying $500-$600. Add to that a still unknown price range for the games themselves and a lot of gamers are getting cold feet.
Sony's "me too" attitude with features is also troubling. While I do think Sony had some motion sensing plans BEFORE Nintendo's big reveal (batarang controller = steering wheel?), their decision to hold off on that detail, and their inability to offer any new feature to online play (so far) makes them look a little behind. Add to that their lack of confidence shown by scrapping the batarang design, and it looks like they're scrambling to define themselves. It may not be true, but perception is more powerful than truth.
In short, until Sony can show the public a game where the PS3 technology clearly outshines Xbox 360, most gamers will continue saying "I'll pick one up when the price drops [a freakin' lot]." Every time they tout Blu-ray as a feature worth the extra $200, it just sounds like another push at a proprietary media format. Every time they talk about additional, non-gaming features, it reminds us of the PSP's lack of good games.
Sony's not dying, they're just swinging the baseball bat at their own knee caps.
EnderAl @ Aug 10th 2006 1:52PM
I loathe Sony, and it's mostly due to non-gaming reasons. It started 15 years ago when multiple walkmen (the tape players for the kids reading) died on me for no fault of my own, and I couldn't get any refund/repair/replacement. Then, they really started to annoy me with their proprietary crap: minidisc, memory stick, and now UMD.
I was a huge Sega fan when the Saturn and Playstation came out, and I admit I have always been bitter that the Playstation took away all of the third party support that would have gone to the Saturn (though the Saturn was apparently a poorly thought out system hardware-wise).
I also have a huge negative opinion of Sony due to the fact that they are able to completely trick people into thinking their stuff is actually the best quality. Their speakers suck, their audio components suck, their computers suck, their normal TVs suck, and yet people just LOVE the Sony brand.
Finally, their whole approach of using the PS3 to push Blu-Ray is just stupid. I hope they fall flat on their face with this approach so that they realize that their targeted audience is not willing to foot the bill for their gambling.
wolfie @ Aug 10th 2006 1:53PM
I agree with Blue Spotted Frog on the price issue. Before E3 the majority of the negative commments were towards Microsoft and XBOX 360. Opinions really do change fast, before E3 almost everybody were saying that PS3 would win the consolewar easily and I must admit so did I.
After that really bad E3 showing and their price strategy, $500-600?! Come on, what casual player would buy PS3 for that price? I am telling you, they would rather still play with PS2 or XBOX. I mean my friends(who are casual players) thinks that XBOX 360 is to expensive and they have good jobs(so they can afford to buy it).
I am more of a gamer, so I play all I can get(when I have the time for it, that is). I still think PS3 could be the next gen winner, IF they reduce the price to XBOX 360 level. IF they don´t, I think we will see Nintendo back at the top and Microsoft as second.
William @ Nov 8th 2008 8:41AM
Because sony has bit the big one this time around, There none chalant and arrgoant attitude has created a worthless machine that hardly any one wants.
blu ray? they are basically forcing us to be beta testers, HD dvd offers just as much except storage space, and its atleast being proven all ready, where as nearly every company working on blu ray still cant get it past 2 layers reliably.
CELL? yay more beta testing the ps3 will be the first system to use it. and probly the last IBM is having hard times geting even 20% of usable cell chips off of the waffers they use. most companies by mass production have chip yields up atleast to 40-60%.
then you have the e3 showing which was just craptacular I mean come on it was the worst e3 showing EVER. nearly every magazine and online source says it was.
Sony has let them selves become arrogant and why haven't they unseated Krazy ken?

I think Sony has been cocky and has had a swagger and people get turned off by that. Also i think they have the Japanese market wrapped up before they even launch. Have you seen the 360's sales number in Japan. They only player Sony has to worry about in Japan is Nintendo

Sorry to say but Sony needs a bitch slap, plain and simple. To us 'alert' webizens who follow the gmaes industry's ins and outs, we all know that sony is going for broke with the ps3. They are using 'the loyal playstation consumers' to help save a large company who just cant get it right. For all of the great designers, engineers, and forward thinkers at the company we are paying 600 for a console thats NOT much more powerful than a 360, age -old controllers, stolen ideas, questionable network abilities, UGLY design, and a guarantee of a final fantasy game. wow.
Everyone knows that sony's onlin eseice is goign to be just okay. sure it will improve over time, but those fanboys and the uninformed who think that they will pull some great srevice out of the ir asses ar ein for a rude awakening. Did anyone read the articles of them pleading to use the cell chip in other areas just to make their money back?
And to those who say the discontent is all crap, how many of your friends are eager to play a ps3 after shelling out 600+tax for the console, a playstation mem card adaptor(u know u will need it), a 60 dollar game, another controller, plus taxes? Yeah, i bet they all saying so what, no problem. Get a clue.
Betrayed is the word of the day, which is leaving many of us who would pick one up for no problem on hte fence- a high one. And with sony attepting to clean up the blu-ray mess (have you seen the in-stores?)and hd-dvd looking stronger month to month, the ps3 is the biggest consumer gamble the video game world has ever seen. We want to see sony actually act like they care about their brand loyalists and the mainstream consumer- I mean, at least act like it! They are not doing us any favors, and we need to let them know that.
The truth of the matter is that we are getting f*cked by sony . And, holy crap, people take offence to that. If i buy a ps3 u better believe its ebay bound.

200+ games? I don't think so. That list has less then 175, and many of them are just geusses about unnanounced games. I understand that list may not have all the games, but according to Sony's own Phil Harrison, there are "more than 100 games in development". That means a few more than 100, or he would have stated "more than 150" or something. And can we really trust that number? He said there are "more than 100 Blu-ray movies available today, in the US". Actually, there are only 24. I geuss he just isn't great with numbers.
And if you're wondering where I got those quotes and facts, check here:

I am a die hard Xbox fan-boy. But I love Sony. 90% all the consumer electronics in my house have Sony stamped on them. It's actually Sony's arrogence that makes me want a PS3. I own a Xbox and a 360, and I can't wait to buy a PS3. I don't own any of Sony's video game units, but want a PS3. While I do agree that the price has put off a lot of people, anyone who doubts PS3's success is off their rocker. I want the 360 to beat the PS3, but it's not going to happen. Sony would litterly have to go into everyones house and start slapping their momma's before people leave the brand. And they would probably still sell 30 million units even after that.

The titanic picture was so CHEAP, and all of us know that.
PSP? lol, it has ate A LOT of the nintendo's monopoly, no other portable system made it before. So i don't know why all that people is claiming that PSP is not a success.
About the 200+ games, fine, it is at least the double than wii's and a lot more than 360's known near it's launch date...

I don't want Blu-ray. I don't approve of sony using their playstation brand to force me to adopt their new disc format. If i wanted a Blu-ray (or HD-DVD) player, i'd buy one. But forcing me to buy one just because i like to play video games, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
That is the reason why I won't buy a PS3, or Blu-Ray for that matter.

whats really funny people is you look at that list,
there was literaly 25+ games are are in the 4th 5th and 6th edition. out of that who list i count maybe 5 orginal IPs, sony sucks. took about lack of creativinty, its almost like there expect the mindless fanboys just to open their wallets up for tekken 6 and vitural fighter 5, (SONY HERE'S A CLUE)
if you want them to buy it why dont you come up with some exciting new IP instead of bleeding us dry for the same crap in a new next gen paint job.
I would even settle for Vitural Tekken 1 if it orginal enough.
yes its Riiiiidge Raccerrr but you forget its Riiiggde Racccer 7.
Sony missed the boat, the PS3 will be the same crap in new package, sony is flounding im sorry fanboys but thats the truth you can't win agianst MS they run the software world.
