What does the 360 need in order for me to take the plunge and pony up the cash for the console....

Quality titles that aren't PC ports, PS2 ports, or first person shooters.

Shout about a game that's not called Halo. I play PC FPS. Halo means nothing to me.

Get a real fighting game exclusive to the 360. Dead or Alive doesn't cut it. Tekken on PSP is better than DoA on 360.

Better first party development.

Show that Nintendo didn't sale them snake oil when MS bought Rare. Where's Killer Instinct or original IPs like Blast Corp for the 360? Perfect Dark is highly overrated too. Viva Pinata? Huh?

Less glitches in software, preferrably, no glitches in software.

I know that it's the dreaded word: port, but I love Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. The single player game, meh, but the online multiplayer is outstanding. I've never had so much fun rolling in and out of different vehicles and player-types. It really is a big frenzy of action and it's been so much fun I haven't touched another game in a few weeks.

/attempt to get back to the spirit of the 'what games are we missing' question of the original post

Quoth Bob422: "The fact that the games appear on both the 360 and the PC is not really a fault. Running in 720p on an HDTV, the games look just as good as they would on a high-end PC (in 1280*1024, no less).

So, you can buy a $400 console or a $1500+ PC. Gee, what do ya think 80% of the people are going to go for? Especially with PC gaming dying a slow aganizing death."

Uhhh, how much is an HDTV again? and that live subscription added on to your broadband bills? I hear a lot of online multiplayer for PC games is free.... and it's better supported, and there is more space and freedom for indie games, and you can get the same hard drive space for less and the PC is way more multifunctional than the 360 will ever be...

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, I'm not a PC gamer by any means. But do a fair comparison, real costs to real costs.

As for the article's question, what will it take for me to get on board with microsoft? The total failure of the wii, a well-paying job, better neat/quirky/origional games, and the 360 acting less like a PC any more like a console. Live is a step in the right direction, but by far not enough.

You know, everyone acts like ports are a bad thing. I don't think so. I mean, let me be the first to say that my PC is crap. Total crap. So when I hear PC titles coming to the 360, I'm thinking its a very good thing. And you know, I'll be the first in line to tell you that LOTR:BFME2 has got to be better with a mouse and keyboard. However, I don't have that option, so having it on 360, even if it doesn't control as well, is still a great thing for me because its the only way I can experience the game at all. What's the big freaking deal about porting games over to other systems so everyone can play them? People just hate that because then they can't brag about how "You should have bought a 360 so you can play GRAW!" or "You should have bought a PS3 so you can play Metal Gear!!". Seriously guys, isn't it better when you can discuss a game you're playing on 360 with one of your friends who may be playing it on PS3? Just a thought.

At any rate, back on topic, the top ten list for me and my Xbox 360 goes like this:

1. Condemned: Criminal Origins
2. Dead Rising
3. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
4. Far Cry Instincts: Predator
5. Call of Duty 2
6. Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter
7. Oblivion
9. Burnout: Revenge
10. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Of course, that's just my list and in no way implies those to be the best in everyone's eyes. I figured I'd throw that in there before someone started flaming with the whole, "WTF Condemned?!?!? That was a launch title and its your favorite?!?!" comment. I just really love that game, and even now, having beat it to absolute death, I still play that game and love it. There's nothing quite like the sound of a 2x4 against a skull to make your day. If you haven't checked that one out, I highly, HIGHLY recommend it.

As far as meeting my expectations, the 360 has done a decent job. I was a little disappointed in some of the games I played (Gun, Over G Fighters, Blazing Angels, Rumble Roses [what'd I expect?]), but as a whole, it has been a pleasure to own and I have no plans of trading it or selling it or anything of that nature. I had the power supply replaced once, but that was no big deal and Microsoft footed the bill for the entire process, so I can't complain too much. New technology always has bugs, and I wasn't surprised. I'm just glad it was something easy to fix like that. Although not being able to play Condemned for a week really sucked. :

Anyway, that's my $.02.

The Xbox 360 is missing RPGs for,Oblivion is great,But I would call it more of adveture due to the fact that it is huge, has no ending, you shape your story and it is just open eded.

I'm glad to see Enchanted Arm coming, giving Xbox 360 its 1st RPG.

N3 should be the Xbox 360 1st hack and slash(non port)

While the Xbox 360 still needs some work,Its lineup is looking great, better then the PS3 ,on scale with the Wii

I'd have to disagree with the people that feel that porting a PC title to the 360 is a negative based on that the PC titles making their way over to the 360 are running on some powerful machines. I could see a valid complaint if that game was "ported" from a much lesser powerful machine such as was what happened with Tony Hawk and Gun to name a couple. Oblivion looks and plays next gen. Call of Duty looks fantastic. I don't need to run out and pay over a grand to experience these games but can just shell out 400 for a 360. Not to bad in my opinion. For those of you that are bashing on the XBOX because of the supposed lack of software I will be very glad when you buy your beloved PS3 or Wii and are faced with the normal waiting time of 6-9 months of no real games after the initial launch lineup. That's always the case with console launches and it won't be any different for the PS3 and the Wii. I'd have to say that the 360 has had a pretty good run of software thus far. My top 10 are as follows (granted it's based on what I've played)
1. Chromehounds (yes, much underrated and great online)
2. Oblivion (awesome RPG)
3. PGR3 (love the in dash view)
4. Fight Night Round 3 (just fun)
5. Kameo (very underrated)
6. Ghost Recon Adv. War. (one of the greatest online)
7. Perfect Dark Zero (great multiplayer co-op or vs.)
8. MLB 2k6 (don't like baseball but found this fun)
9. Top Spin Tennis (Fun once you build up your char)
10. Ridge Racer 6 (I'm a sucker for the RR series)

I'm sure that dead rising would be way up on my list and push the others a notch down. I didn't list any arcade games but consider that part of the XBOX 360 experience to be a vital component. I've downloaded around 13 games and love them all. XBOX LIVE is far and away the best online service for gaming and I really don't think thats going to change anytime soon. Call me a fanboy if you like (although I will be checking out both of the new consoles when they drop...) but I feel that Microsoft's 360 is the best all round machine to be ever released. Love it.

I own an xbox 360 for about 2 months now; at first it seemed ok; The shock of all the money I've spent has been absorbed (extra wireless controller, xbox live gold, 2 play while charge packs, wireless adapter and 1600 xbox live points)
The next gen experience hasn't hit me yet; Fight Night 3 is ok (i'm at 20-0 and can't get past a DLH rematch) and Prey just got a little boring. FPS games are def not my thing and I'm starting to feel like I invested in the wrong console.

I'm into fighting games, Especially Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Tekken and Mortal Kombat. DOA is ok but nowhere close to the aforementioned.

Dead Rising (Demo) just seems a bit mindless for me; the Resident Evil Stories were alot more compelling.

I'm playing Battlefront II more than anything else; I bought the expansion pack and so far it's been the best investment i've made but I could have enjoyed that on the regular xbox. I have the Halo Triple pack and am nearing the ending of Halo 1; I'm not having as good a time as most halo fans are only because i'm not into the game/storyline.

Strange how I am glued to resident evil and games like the original Metal Gear Solid but not to games like halo or tomb raider. I think it's just the storylines (I didn't like any of the metal gear sequels) and play mechanics not offering anything new.

I'd like to see all of the street fighters put on a DVD DL disc for this system; wow would that make one hell of a christmas for me. I'd also like to see Virtua fighter appear for the 360 in a similar fashion as well as a sweet 360 version.
If it were possible to bring Konami's Mo-cap boxing into the living room via any system I'm there in a heartbeat.

Battlefront 3 would also put it over the top for me.

Xbox Live arcade being built into xbox live gold would also be nice. 5 - 10.00 for retro games is just plain ridiculous.

My own actual gamer pic instead of purchasing cartoony pics.

Lastly, Internet explorer and an all in one instant messenger for everyone else to get a hold of me while i'm gaming and not in front of my pc which is usually when I'm doing work or trying to pass time when i'm supposed to be working :-D

Until then i'm keeping a close eye on the PS3 as a replacement and absolutley getting a wii even if I have to stand in line for a week!

"Maybe what this means is that with a new system it just takes software developers a little while to figure out how to best utilize new consoles. Also, back then the PS2 was really the only game in town and had been in out in Japan 7 months earlier, so it had a bit of a headstart"

It was not the first to market but in fact LAST. I hate people getting this fact messed up. PS2 was competing against the N64 and Dreamcast! Sony has NEVER been first to market.

of all the games I've played for 360, Dead Rising is probably the funnest. However, I probably got more hours out of DOA4 online. COD2 was good, but the multiplayer sucked at first, same with PD0. NFSMW was really good as well. To be honest, I have yet to pickup a 360 game that really sucked...except for Blazing Angels and Over G Fighters. Those games are 100% garbage.

That's sort of true, but the N64 was really competing with the PS1 and the Saturn, and the Dreamcast was sadly DOA because of lack of support from third-party vendors (like EA) waiting on the PS2. Of the consoles we now consider the current generation, the PS2 WAS first to market.

@ Ethan

I see your point but look at it this way. When a console's library is dominated by ports and very little in the way of quality first party exclusives or original IPs, that's a problem. If Microsoft wants to prove that the 360 is better than the PS3, ports are only a small part of that equation. All port prove is the 360 can "me-too" the PS3 or PC (to an extent). Original games, exclusives are going to win the day.

MS first party support is suspect as a whole, and Rare has yet to prove that they were worth the hundreds of millions that MS paid for them.
As far as PC gaming goes, anyone can get a decent gaming rig for $800. I know it's twice the price of a 360 but look at what you get for that $800 investment...

Superior online support that destroys Xbox live and it's free.

Access to the mod community. A community that Xbox live players will never see. There is a reason legions of people are still playing Quake 2 and 3, Unreal Tourny (the original) and Starcraft.

more upgrade options, ($400 for a 360 or $200 for a new graphics card, hmmmmm)

superior RPG support, superior RTS support, superior sim support, superior MMO support

The ability to scale game environments based on system configuration and performance. As opposed to just being stuck with a bad framerate or sloppy performance on 360.

360 is not bad but I'd rather have a console be a console and not act like a gimped PC (as someone mentioned earlier)

I like my 360, and I play my fair share of games. There are a number of games that I'm looking forward to coming out.

Now, this is a bit off topic...but...

If M$ doesn't let me:

1) View some of my home videos that aren't WMV files
(or even view WMV files WITHOUT media center)
2) Do some basic web browsing
(or have some basic internet interaction features)
3) Play HD-DVD games off the HD-DVD external player.

...and the PS3 does, then I'm selling my 360.

I don't like a company on-purposely restricting cababilities of a unit only because they can. Only because they want to hold back, and exploit more $$ from the consumer.

This would be the only way I'd become a PS3 "fanboy".

Bottom line, I wouldn't have bought the 360 *only* for the games. I can't sell the 360 to MY peers...because they've restricted what would sell it to them. I'll see if M$ responds to the PS3 launch by opening up more funcionality to the 360. If anyone would like for me to expand on why it's so important for #1,#2, and #3 to be added as features, let me know.

As just a Next Gen. game console...the price is way too much - so why not demand more?

Here is my top ten, the 360 is a great system and Live is simply the best online service to date.

1. Oblivion 98% (Loading times suck)
2. Project Gotham 3 94%
3. Dead Rising 94%
4. 99 Nights 90%
5. Halo 2 90% (Getting a little dated)
6. Kameo 90% (Unbalanced characters, short)
7. Call of Duty 2 88% (Terrible online play)
8. Fight Night Rd 3 85% (Terrible single play)
9. Condemned 85% (Gets a little repetitive)
10. DOA 4 81% (Same old stuff, achievement point dispersion sucks)

Trolls, please remember the summer drought and that during console transition times (especially for this new generation of consoles) developers have fiddle around with a lot of stuff including final specs and staff size. Also, PS3 not only has an terrible launch line-up but developers are beginning to pull their games.

Looks like Dead Rising just got bumped to the #8 position with the inclusion of the Yahoo! Games review. Not exactly fair to compare it with other titles scores though, as it's the least reviewed entry.

As for the question posed, I've owned a 360 for over six months now and I'm rather pleased with it. There's definitely a penury of good games (I've bought only two games for the system so far, one of which I promptly sold.) I'm also exasperated by all the retro titles released on XBLA. These "classics" almost always fall short of one's childhood rememberances. I wish Microsoft would focus on new games (the only XBLA title that has me excited is Lumines Live!) Lastly, the console needs a whole lot more media functionality; it's truly a pity when modded Xboxes handily outpeform their next-gen brethren in this department.

Okay, so maybe I'm not so pleased with it. But I am pleased by its potential. With a slew of promising games on the horizon (I have a good 10 on my wishlist), and with Microsoft's continued efforts to improve the 360 experience, I have no qualms about my purchase.

@ KilgoreTrout XL:

Shut up...so I'm a troll b/c I got my information mixed up. Right...

With a game like GRAW, it was in fact very different on the PC then on the 360. The 360 version (if I remember correctly) was 3rd and the PC version was 1st person...PLUS the PC version came out months later.

Someone also said that b/c Halo came out first on the Xbox then later on the PC that it was not a port. Yes it is. It was (re)developed for the Xbox then years later ported over to the PC.

I don't really understand all this "port" confusion--if port is a dirty word, isn't that because publishers just rush out a half-assed copy for another system without taking any pains to specialize it for that system's capabilities? When COD2 came out for 360, sure it was the same game that had been available for the PC for awhile, but it didn't suffer in the translation. If you're getting a solid experience on one system, what do you care if it's also available on another system?

The 360 is ripe for some complaints about quick and dirty ports, but COD2 isn't one of them. Gun, Tony Hawk, and Quake 4 were all widely denounced for being shoddy ports, particularly at a $60 premium...here's an idea, though--read the reviews and don't buy them. I notice there hasn't been anyone who actually bought and played COD2 complaining about it...

I imagine the system that ports will really be a problem for is the Wii--hopefully publishers won't even try it. If you need some supporting evidence look at every multiplatform title that also appears on the DS...

You were correct about Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, that should not be considered a port. Look at all the current-gen games that were updated to 'next-gen standards' I don't see any of those games being AA

Seems like some people are confused as to what a port is and what it isn't.

Let's take Halo for example. Halo as a whole isn't a port, all versions of a game are never ports, one of them has to be the original. So Halo for Xbox is NOT a port, it's the original version. Halo for PC, on the other hand, IS a port, and not a very good one at that.

That's another thing, a port is not necessarily something bad, there are some very good ports. A good port is a version that is well adjusted to the platform it's being ported to and takes its peculiarities into consideration. As I said, Halo is not a particularly good PC port (incredibly overbloated requirements and a save system that could've been better; the controls, however, are reasonably well adjusted), but Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is.

As for people who say they don't know any one with out problems with a 360. I think they are lying. Friends of mine have problems with freezing, which is annoying but when it moves to red lights and no dashboard it's heartbreaking for a fanboy like me. Intercoolers aren't selling so well just because, they are noisy and ms has not delt with cooling well enough.

(to #75) Well, I posted comment #66 - so, I'm no stranger to bashing some of the 360's shortcomings. But, I can honestly say that I haven't had a problem with my 360. Me and my friends bought our 360s at the same time - and we haven't had any problems. (Only had it for 6 months - we bought it in March). I've had a couple of crashes...but I think it's mostly with game glitches...such as the popular COD2 bug.

My biggest problems is, Many of us bought a 360 because of the "potential" it has...but, whatif...2 or 3...or 4 years goes by...and we're still waiting for that potential to be unlocked? Now...wouldn't that suck!!!

Again, as just a Next Gen. game console...the price is way too much - so WHY NOT demand more?
