Japanese hardware sales, 31 July - 6 August: heavy meta
Though we may frequently appear to be aloof, apathetic or altogether addicted to awe-inspiring alliteration, the Joystiq crew is actually attentively attuned to the needs of its readers and commenters. We know what you want, and what you want is what we know -- that is to say, we'll teach you how to make an official Joystiq Japanese sales chart post in the comfort of your very own home! Step 1: Create a terrible introductory paragraph
The introductory paragraph helps ease the reader into the wealth of information provided by one of these posts. It functions like a soft mattress placed in-between the reader and the pit of rusty nails that is the weekly onslaught of numbers. Make sure that the introductory paragraph is self-referential, wildly incoherent and not even remotely related to the actual sales numbers. You may introduce a second paragraph if you feel the mattress needs to be thicker, though it's recommended that you implement a silly allegory to maintain interest and "humor."
A third paragraph, however, is most certainly not recommended. It will only serve to anger those that are eager to reach the actual information.
Step 2: Insert the sales information obtained from Media Create:
The ranking, according to number of units sold:
- DS Lite: 163,572
13,281 (7.51%)- PSP: 49,352
6,748 (15.84%)- PS2: 25,987
464 (1.75%)- GBA SP: 2,784
555 (24.90%)- Game Boy Micro: 1,928
162 (9.17%)- Xbox 360: 1,389
857 (38.16%)- DS Phat: 1,159
371 (24.25%)- Gamecube: 904
135 (12.99%)- GBA: 34
25 (277.77%)- Xbox: 14
3 (27.27%)Step 3: Create a final paragraph (must be worse than introductory paragraph)
In your final paragraph, you may opt to analyze the week's sales trends (the Xbox is always a hilarious topic), possibly referring to coinciding NPD reports or pointing out how the DS Lite outsells everything, in the universe, ever. Alternatively, you may use it as a denouement to any running jokes you regrettably started in Step 1.

You forgot the step where you guys post the imperial flag of Japan and the other step where millions of non-breast fed commenters revolt against your insensitivity towards cultural anguish.
Kusanagi_M @ Aug 11th 2006 8:08PM
Hey, XBox Original up by THREE whole units :D WOW!
darryl @ Aug 11th 2006 8:14PM
Looks like the PSP is outselling the PS2. Hrm...
Cage @ Aug 11th 2006 8:27PM
How about we play a game. Everyone ends whatever comment they have with "in Japan". Say it with me now..."in Japan". Great. Lets see if it works.
Niel @ Aug 11th 2006 8:29PM
Do they still manufacture DS phats? if so shouldn't they start making them with multiple brightness settings.
Yellow Texan @ Aug 11th 2006 8:34PM
3.) The PSP is #2 selling video game system in Japan, a quite well now. It is also notable this week's Japanese sales chart provided by by Media Create, that the it is the first time a PSP video game debut first place. SD Gundam G Generation Portable sold 155,634, while the New Super Mario Bros. "only" sold 98,038. Of course, Gundam probably will not achieve the total sales of New Super Mario Bros.

LMAO! Funny sarcastic bent to this weeks hardware sales, Joystiq. Something tells me Joystiq is getting sick of all the "GC/360/PS2/DS IZ A FREAKIN JOKE IN JAPAN!" posts that are made every time something moves up or down 3%.

Step 1: Pretend to believe that
A) People will care about your opinion
B) People will read about your opinion
and
C) Your opinion matters
Step 2: Try to convince yourself that you have better insight, or some sort of special viewpoint that makes you different than the other people commenting
Step 3: Make sure to subtly sneak in who's side you're on, what companies you support, and which brands you hate. Be absolutely sure to make it clear to people what kind of fanboy you are.

#8:
I think it's pretty obvious that the 360 and wii aren't even competing with each other. You can't compare apples and oranges. Now the 360 and the ps3 is a different story.
Dr.Swiss @ Aug 11th 2006 10:13PM
I agree with Chris.
We keep forgetting that NINTENDO THEMSELVES has stated that they are not competing with anyone.
Only fanboys do the whole "DS vs 360" etc etc whatever thing.
Fan @ Aug 11th 2006 10:51PM
"I think it's pretty obvious that the 360 and wii aren't even competing with each other."
Of course the Wii and the 360 are in direct competition. Just because some PR people at Nintendo is trying to convince you otherwise does not make it true. All 3 consoles are in direct competition for a space in the consumers livingroom. It does not matter if the console has a different I/O system its still a games console.
Dr.Swiss @ Aug 11th 2006 11:39PM
@Fan
Funny coming from someone with nagative stars, looks like no one here is a "fan" of yours.
I had to say it, for my own petty amusement. :)
Fan @ Aug 12th 2006 12:07AM
I love you too.
Kyle @ Aug 12th 2006 12:18AM
hey i was just wondering why the gameboy advnace is split up into sp, micro and normal and the ds into phat and lite where as the psp and ps2 are just in one section, not into black/white or ps2 phat/slim...
just a thought but it would be cool to see the seperate selling charts.
Dr.Swiss @ Aug 12th 2006 12:58AM
Joystiq doesn't like my hearts, I guess that's what I get for putting certain characters in a html enabled field.
Anyways, @ Fan = "special character" + 3 = heart.
@ Kyle = the don't show that for PSPs because that's a colour change. It would be like sperating white DSs and noble pink DSs in the list. They also don't show "phat" PS2 compared to slim ones because they don't sell the phat version in retail stores anymore. Everywhere I go it's only the slim version.
I agree though, I too would like to see how many each version & colour have sold compared to each other, just for the hell of it.
Kevin @ Aug 12th 2006 2:13AM
I don't understand. What is the difference between shipped and sold?
According to Sony they shipped 20 million units worldwide and Nintendo Sold 21 million units.
Do they mean the same thing?
How come the DS is kicking the PSP's butt in Japan but the units sold are the same?
Why doesn't Nintendo boast about how many units they've shipped worldwide?
Probot @ Aug 12th 2006 4:53AM
@Kevin
Typically, sold means how many units are in the hands of the consumer. Those numbers typically come from NPD (in US) or MediaCreate (in Japan). Those organizations rely on retailers to tell them how many units were actually sold.
Shipped means how many units the company (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft) has sent out to retailers. Technically, the company has sold them to the retailers.
This may seem like a small difference, but it matters for two reasons. First, "shipped" numbers include all the systems sold to consumers AND every system still sitting on the shelves. If you think of every electronic store in the country having at least a few consoles around, you can see how that would inflate the numbers.
On top of that, consoles sales are often used as a symbol of the popularity of the system. But just because a console is sitting in Wal-Mart, doesn't mean people like it.
These points are a bit misleading though. Most stores will order what they expects to sell, so while there may be a delay, the shipped units will usually line up with actual sales eventually.
Sony is often criticized for using "shipped" numbers in press releases, while Nintendo prefers using "sold," even if it makes the sales seem less than competitors. (Much like how they only gave the GC specs of the machine running, rather than maximum possible.) Why they do that, I don't really know.
And actually, if you want the worldwide numbers (according to each company's press releases) Nintendo is winning by a pretty big margin. And for the curious, Nintendo says sold and Sony says shipped.
Nintendo DS: 21 million worldwide (As of July 24, 2006)

It's funny how you fanboys that have bashed us, called us children and even girls for the past 10 freaking years and said the DS was a gimmic that was going nowhere and going to be totally whooped by the PSP are now CRYING because your system of choice is geating a beatdown by the DS.
You all can sure as hell dish it and now all you want to do is cry about it when the tables are turned.
I could personally care less about 360 vs DS. I own and love both system.
I just think it's funny how you fanboys come up with excuse after lame excuse when shit is finally being thrown in your faces after everybody else had to put up with your lame shit all of these years.
I love how -1 star some how discredits everything somebody has to say. I guess you'll end up finding a typo in my post and discredit me too. What ever it takes to convince your self that you're right.
Have fun.
Matters @ Aug 12th 2006 10:09AM
sigh.
geating = getting
gimmic = gimmick
josh @ Aug 12th 2006 11:46AM
"where as the psp and ps2 are just in one section, not into black/white or ps2 phat/slim..."
they don't break DS up by color. and they no longer sell the "phat" PS2, do they?
Dr.Swiss @ Aug 12th 2006 2:59PM
@Matters
Yeah, actually negative stars DOES discredit what they say for the most part because they got those from TROLLING.
When people get a rep for posting with no intention but to start an arguement (ie-posting how the p2p sold more then the 360 in a certain month when the article is about a new 360 faceplate or something) then they deserve having no one take them seriously.
They get those negative stars for a reason.
