Grand Theft Auto: Coca-Cola City

Had to happen sooner or later, but our dearly precious Grand Theft Auto franchise has sold out. Yes, they've gone all Hollywood on us. Oh well, it was great while it lasted with our own little video game living in obscurity.
Check out this Coke ad where our favorite mayhem maker has gone all legit on us and is handing out bottles of Coke and kindness instead of bullets and bitch slaps. What's this world coming to?

It didnt say it was parterned with GTA though... it was just a rip off of it.
Isaac @ Aug 13th 2006 1:54AM
I don't care; I love coke. :)
Endejas @ Aug 13th 2006 1:54AM
Absolutely awesome commercial. Coca-Cola has some of the best minds working for their ads. MS should hire them for work in Japan.
MadAlive8 @ Aug 13th 2006 1:59AM
exactly what elchibo said. it doesnt say gta or rockstar anywhere on this commercial
Babylonian @ Aug 13th 2006 2:05AM
That was a pretty funny ad.
Oh, and Joystiq knows it isn't GTA. Take a joke, guys.
Jordan Hass @ Aug 13th 2006 2:06AM
that made me disturbed, annoyed, happy, and thirsty.
WHY DID YOU DO THAT "RANDOM GTA GUY"?
Rawnblade @ Aug 13th 2006 2:07AM
I had to go back and watch it again, just to make sure I had seen what I saw.
Totally goes against everything I've ever known to come out of GTA, but very funny. Coke does have some great advertising minds.
junkie @ Aug 13th 2006 2:10AM
I'm surprised coke dosen't mind the association with GTA, considering how more conservative elements of society view it.
Keith L. Dick @ Aug 13th 2006 2:11AM
***What's this world coming to?***
To an End...
I do like Coke tho... hehehe
jay @ Aug 13th 2006 2:38AM
if video games influencing my actions is any indication... this little 'video game' commercial actually makes me want to go out and get some coke! awesome marketing work there.
audioout @ Aug 13th 2006 2:44AM
I don't like most Coke commercials. Remember "This is football town"? errr. Coke doesn't make you a football fan, it makes you fat.
Vazel @ Aug 13th 2006 2:58AM
^ And they rot your teeth. I know very well what happens when you drink nothing but soda can after soda can every day for years.
Crazylink @ Aug 13th 2006 3:11AM
Nice commercial, but Pepsi is better.
Grant @ Aug 13th 2006 3:13AM
Here's a pretty cool commercial that looks like it's for a Chinese WoW/Coke tie-in promotion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDfzdZqGoRU
And here's another recent Coke commercial that's not video game related but is still really really cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdGcSE9LVJA&mode=related&search=
Easy_G @ Aug 13th 2006 3:37AM
I'm more of a Pepsi man myself (well actually I'm probably more of a Pellegrino man), but I did like this commercial. It actually kind of made me want a coke, and I think it kept the spirit of the games. Just comical mischeif, albeit this time nice instead of evil.
Vazel @ Aug 13th 2006 4:12AM
What a heartwarming commercial.
dvdmike @ Aug 13th 2006 4:55AM
THe latest issue of gamestm in the uk has a feature on vice city stories they have visited rockstar leeds,

Jecrell @ Aug 13th 2006 5:21AM
That was beautiful man... just beautiful...
Dawid Gatti @ Aug 13th 2006 5:30AM
Mmm jammi pesticide in a bottle mmmm.... ;)
Matt @ Aug 13th 2006 6:13AM
Coke isn't worth anything until you've added some whiskey or Drambuie to it...
EdZ @ Aug 13th 2006 6:17AM
That commercial is hilarious. I await the Master Chief chugging coke with his covenant buddies.
Coke vs Pepsi: In the UK, coke is usually a few pence cheaper. Case closed.
Angelo @ Aug 13th 2006 7:14AM
Awesome clip, not bad at all ;) Its very in touch with what people relate to.
Denis @ Aug 13th 2006 7:17AM
What is the music used in the ad? I really like it. Great ad all round, too.
gra @ Aug 13th 2006 7:41AM
Pop is for nerds. Except Mountain Dew Code Red that one's the shit lolzzzzz!!!
Reapz @ Aug 13th 2006 8:17AM
Hey, I work for Coca-Cola, damn fine company to work for too.
This can only help them.
PodMonkeys @ Aug 13th 2006 9:01AM
Excellent marketing! They did a really good job on the animation, it sets a good image for games, and it really does make one thirsty for some good soda. ALso makes you feel good about the world! :P
I personally prefer Coke and Pepsi for different occasions, depending on what its being served with, mixed with, etc.
A person @ Aug 13th 2006 9:12AM
There was no selling out here, it's a loving homage.
Joolies @ Aug 13th 2006 9:25AM
"loving homage"? Don't get all Quentin Tarantino on us.
Risse @ Aug 13th 2006 9:26AM
o_0 Bit cheesy ad, but I liked it. It was well done.
Dave @ Aug 13th 2006 9:44AM
1. NO GTA logo anywhere. They didn't sell out. Their style was taken. Enough with the 'Woe is me' routine.
2. It was good. A homage to the series as one poster put it. People need to calm down about advertizements
Jim @ Aug 13th 2006 9:51AM
The commercial is "soso" but it's interesting to see mainstream video game content popping up in TV commercials.
Dallas @ Aug 13th 2006 11:37AM
Sarcasm, people. Look it up some time.
MO @ Aug 13th 2006 11:43AM
#14, I liked the first ad. Now that one should come to the US. Maybe change the speech to english, but keep the premise. The second one isn't so good. I've seen it on TV once before.
Greg @ Aug 13th 2006 11:58AM
I prefer Dr Pepper myself.
And yes, I thought it was clear that this isn't actually GTA. Funny commercial nonetheless.
arch @ Aug 13th 2006 12:13PM
HAHAHAHA THAT WAS AWSOME.
Mabui @ Aug 13th 2006 1:08PM
Best commerical I've seen in a long time.. I wish it was on television..
nick @ Aug 13th 2006 1:15PM
That's funny, but I'm still not drinking Coke.
georgedakota @ Aug 13th 2006 1:15PM
Pepsi sucks and is for wusses. Why because it doesnt have the fizz coke has and real men cant take coke. However i stopped drinking soda because i cant afford a dentist and try to be healthier now. But when i did drink coke was way better than pepsi
JoseMiguel @ Aug 13th 2006 1:25PM
It doesn't necessarily have to say it has an association with R*. They could've licensed the concept and just used it. Just because there isn't a disclaimer or something that doesn't mean they aren't working togheter.
aaron @ Aug 13th 2006 1:35PM
Yea, that commercial was just plain terrible. I never knew there was such things as soft drink fanboys haha.
Your Mother @ Aug 13th 2006 2:11PM
I hate it when game companies sell out, especially ones with games that I like. It seems like you can barely turn on the TV anymore without seeing something like this.
Plus the commercial sucked.
hotdrop @ Aug 13th 2006 2:26PM
That was a great commercial. I saw it yesterday in the theater and me and my friends were laughing pretty hard.
Pencil $havings @ Aug 13th 2006 2:55PM
Interesting..!
MSU_CokeBoi @ Aug 13th 2006 2:57PM
Addressing the alias 'Your Mother'...no game company sold out on anybody.
I'm a Coke enthusiast so im all for the commercial and the marketing team being this concept. Just some things I'd like to state
1-Coke is better than pepsi.
2-You don't have to avoid soft drinks to keep your teeth healty, just don't drink 10 a day and you'll be fine, diet coke is good stuff
3-There is a such thing as 'soft drink' fanboys
4-pepsi SUCKS and doesn't deserved to be capitalized
Joe @ Aug 13th 2006 3:48PM
Die Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper for me.
Some say it tastes like piss. I enjoy it much.
Sponge @ Aug 13th 2006 5:29PM
1. Pepsi is sweeter then Coke and has less caffeine so they appeal to different people.
2. RC kicks both their a$$es!!
Basheron @ Aug 13th 2006 6:16PM
Very classy and funny commercial, hard to find ads without large busted women these days. Props to Coca-Cola.
Ferior @ Aug 13th 2006 6:16PM
omr coke iz teh roxorz pepzi sux
no fu pepsi is tehbomb coek is like bad n stuff kk l2p
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, this is an excellent spoof on the GTA series.
Grindstone @ Aug 13th 2006 6:18PM
The commercial did not suck. It appealed the genre intended for it. It would only suck if you weren't talking about it. Personally, I thought it did an excellent job bringing parody to an otherwise violent game(s). Very well done.
As for Coke being better than Pepsi... hard to say. I do know they both taste different south of the border. But as it were, I've gone a more natural route now that college is over.
Still a good commercial regardless of my choices.
Dirk Dorkelson @ Aug 13th 2006 7:02PM
This is obviously Coke making a play for the "hardcore" soda demographic after years of trying to capture the kiddy market with their polar bear and Santa ads. It's because Coke has finally realized that it can't make enough money just catering to the casual soft drink consumers. The bread and butter of the industry is that hardcore element who buys more than a twelve-pack a week.
But is this going to be enough to capture more market share? A lot of Coke's longtime customers are fed up with the company's lies and false promises (remember New Coke?) Maybe Pepsi is finally positioned to put Coke out of business.
