A Prey patch in the works [update 1]

3D Realms released news that patches are on the way for both the PC and 360 versions of their cool, but short first-person shooter Prey. If you're like us and finished Prey long ago and were left with nothing else to do but watch a horrid multiplayer slug along, this is great news.
While the single player side is a truly solid game, the multiplayer version of Prey -- at least on the 360 -- is a complete mess of epic proportions. Here are some fixes coming to the PC version:
- Fixed a crash at startup on some machines
- Fixed a crash on some machines when reading saved games
- Fixed multiplayer weapon exploit
[Update: Apparently "very soon" means today. If you start up Prey, an update will be waiting for you. We tested multiplayer to see if it was fixed and it wasn't. The game was still very laggy and close to unplayable. In fact, in one game we tried to get into, the game completely froze. Thanks for the tip, Grim]

Wasn't this already posted?

Way to put up news thats over a week old!

Well, once upon a time I used to play console games - among other things - because they didn't had any (or very, very few) bugs.
Seems these good times have gone.

I couldn't play Prey multiplayer because I was so pissed that it WASN'T Aliens vs Predator 3.

Leave it to Microshaft to turn the gaming industry into their crappy PC industry. Bugs, patches, you name it! It's all so craptacular.
Grim @ Aug 14th 2006 11:37AM
Why in the world did you even think to blame Mircrosoft? The blame needs to be put on Venom and 3D Realms.
BI5H0P @ Aug 14th 2006 11:46AM
What ever happened to XNA? I thought the whole idea of that was for developers to pick up parts off the shelf that worked and implement them into their games? Hasn't someone already figured out the laggy on-line play problem? And why does this seem to keep happening from the beginning with COD2/PDZ all the way up until recently with Street Fighter II XBLA?

I smell another fanboy.

I hope this patch comes this week. :) I should be getting it from Gamerang.com by Wednesday. It will probably take me a couple weeks to play through the single player part.
Pretty Obvious @ Aug 14th 2006 12:07PM
Are you people idiots? So, your unhappy that a game that is already damn good in single player cant be patched to improve the multiplayer?
Im sorry but there were countless games on older consoles back in the day that could have benefited greatly from a patch or two. Yeah, those days are over and amen to that.
Tobor @ Aug 14th 2006 12:38PM
Pretty Obvious nailed this one. Console games have always been buggy as hell, you just had to live with it. Framerate sucks? Oh well live with it. Cheap bug making a game impossible to finish? Too bad.
Living in a fairyland where console games were all polished, shiny and perfect "back in the day" is ridiculous.
n8dogg @ Aug 14th 2006 12:53PM
I just hope it won't take another 10 years for Prey 2 to come out. "PREY WILL CONTINUE..."
Freelance @ Aug 14th 2006 1:52PM
The fact that games will be released with known bugs and just patched up later on consoles is actually a pretty sad trait that is being inherited from PC gaming. Its also sad how we as consumers have quickly come to accept this sort of BS.

Multiplayer wasn't unplayable. Rooms with 8 players were slow for sure, but smaller rooms were much more likely to be playable.
Grim @ Aug 14th 2006 2:16PM
After the update I have notice less lag, but if the host is bad, it will be unplayable. Before the max we could get was 6 players at a time. Now we can 8 before it starts to lag.
Highpower @ Aug 14th 2006 4:11PM
I didn't think Prey multiplayer was that bad, it was no Halo 2 but I thought it was alot like UT. It was very fast paced and lots of weapons to use. Finding a decent host is sometimes an issue, or finding enough players but overall it was fun.
