The Unreal engine already has competition in the form of the Cry engine from Crytek (The Farcry/Crysis guys). Offset looks to throw a third contender into the ring and hopefully they'll have a good game to go with it. FarCry was beautiful, but I only enjoyed looking at it, not playing.

the offset engine is much less resource intense then either unreal 3 or Crysis, the hardware that demo was created on is only a geforce 7 series chipset, where as both unreal and crysis are directx 10 games.

the engine is superior in many ways to either.
this is what happens when developers are hungry.

Indeed. I think that's the future of game development really. Not bigger hardware, but smarter software.

Check out Offset's website and you'll find out that these models all have pretty low polygon counts, just tons of effects. Very impressive.

UE3 excels in it's toolset as much as it's graphic capabilities. The real draw of UE3 is it's robust tools for creating complex game content easily. I doubt any of the "homebrew" engines can top even a fraction of UE3's tools UE3 offers. Graphics or performance alone aren't why so many game companies have jumped onto the UE3 boat. Shaving a year or dev time and 4-5 million dollars off the production costs of a game are pretty important factors these days.
