Halo 2 speed trial becomes Guinness world record
How fast can you beat Halo 2? In August of 2005, Cody Miller managed to take on the Flood on Legendary difficulty in 3 1/2 hours ... without dying. It's an amazing feat, so much so that the 2007 Guinness Book of World Record lists Cody's stunt. If any Joystiq readers can get a scan of the page, let us know and we'll update. The Guinness website does not have it listed yet, unfortunately.
You can check out Cody's explanation of the feat here, as well as check out the video here. Congratulations, and for those naysayers who say his run is no big deal, we'll let the guys at Bungie's tell you off:
"I bet that about 40 of you will say, "ZOMG I TOTALLY DID THAT TWO YEARS AGO IN HALF THE TIME." But you're lying. I know it, you know it and your mom knows it good and hard. So just don't."

"...and your mom knows it good and hard. So just don't."
Ummm...ok I'm not gonna touch that one. >_
-the_mole- @ Aug 16th 2006 8:40PM
...i never really like halo...strategy games are much more satisfying and much more fun and aren't anywhere near as easy. to be honest, i don't think i can do it in 3 1/2 hours...but still not very impressive -_-
AoE @ Aug 16th 2006 8:43PM
Wow... So he played Halo 2 enough to be able to beat it on legendary, without dying, in 3.5 hrs? Someone needs to buy that kid some new games!!!
Nerdtacular @ Aug 16th 2006 8:46PM
-the_mole- you should be renamed -the_troll-.
I think this is uber impressive.
Does the Guinness book list any other speed runs or Twin Galaxies-regulated gamers scores?
Markster @ Aug 16th 2006 8:49PM
Halo speedrun gets into the Guinness Book of World Records, but no Mario???
Perhaps it's time for the "Joystiq Book of World Video Game Records"?
socrates @ Aug 16th 2006 8:58PM
Wow!
I never would have guessed that someone finished the single player of Halo2...
niftythought @ Aug 16th 2006 9:01PM
for the record... it's Guinness World Records Book.
I know, that really matters.

Heh, I cant even past the first level on Legendary. This guy must be pretty crazy to be able to beat it all in under 4 hours without dieing
braveerudite @ Aug 16th 2006 10:13PM
He should change his real name legally to Master Chief.
To those of you h8t3rs give the guy credit.
Chris @ Aug 16th 2006 10:41PM
Ok if they put that then they need to put all the other amazing speed runs that have been done such as metroid prime 1:04 I didn't do it but I have a video of it.
patrick @ Aug 16th 2006 11:07PM
amazing i did a couple levels on heroic today and was pretty dificult

yah right... never even finished the damn game on the second setting.......
Rob X. @ Aug 16th 2006 11:34PM
As much as I like Halo 2, the second half of the game can literally be run through, killing only the required amount of enemies in order to open a locked door. I call it First Person Running.
Rare Hare @ Aug 17th 2006 12:05AM
LOL at socrates (#8) :D
Yeah, I never cared much for the campaign mode either... It's sad, really, because Halo 2 is the main reason I bought an Xbox, and I don't even have Xbox Live. Though I suppose I could still squeeze some fun out of it if I can find Ninja Gaiden in a bargain bin somewhere.
3 and a half hours is definately impressive, though. Good for Cody Miller, and good for Bungie for creating a game that has gained enough popularity to be in the Guiness Book.
Grimm @ Aug 17th 2006 12:29AM
Ok first of all that's very very impressive I mean I could beat the game in 3.5 hours but on f*ckin legendary! That's just insane I mean u get shot 4 times and ur shield is gone...by a freakin plasma rifle. And beating mario in like 36 minutes isn't much of a feat really because the game is simple. Halo is a whole nother spectrum of gaming.
Huzzah!! @ Aug 17th 2006 12:29AM

Uh.... WHAT??!?!? You's got's' issues'es's!!1
An unkown Shape from the world beyond your closet door @ Aug 17th 2006 1:33AM
Why the fucking HAlo 2 speed run. The Super mario bros 3 speed runs are way more impressive. Just because Halo is the current fad of gaming doesn't make him the best, he was inuagarated in the gaming hall of fame, before many other greater characters. I am a fan of Halo games vut masterchief is not the coolest character, so Why should he get the most acknowldgement for gaming. And it wasn't even that big a seller, all GTAs sold more each.
a Master Ninja @ Aug 17th 2006 2:24AM
3 and 1/2 hours and no deaths in Halo 2 on Legendary...whoa...
OTAM @ Aug 17th 2006 3:02AM
You people crying about other games like Mario and such are missing the point.
The difficulty is set on LEGENDARY and he didnt die ONCE. Re-read that as many times as it needs to sink in,but i'm sure you'll still be sitting there saying "So man? Mario 3 speed run where you jump on everything and it has one difficulty"
rainking187 @ Aug 17th 2006 3:58AM
And any credibility Guinness had left goes out the window for mentioning this. Can anyone at least tell me what category this is in?
Hawk @ Aug 17th 2006 6:27AM
Bah, I've completed Halo 2 on legendary...
... it might have taken me three days though >.>
Blink @ Aug 17th 2006 8:24AM
ok, so maybe its a tad unjust that halo gets all the atention when all the nintendo speed runs on all the nintendo consoles are much cooler, but this kid is obviously a fucking fantastic gamer to achieve that.
i mean c'mon, anyone willing to give up that much time to get that good at somthing is dedicated
gok @ Aug 17th 2006 8:50AM
Who gives a shit about super mario 3 speedruns... That game is goddamn 20 years old for chrissake.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Aug 17th 2006 9:50AM
Cody miller's Halo and Halo 2 legendary walkthroughs have been poseted on HBO for years now. His Cairo Station speedrun is rediculous.
That's an impressive time.
Kev @ Aug 17th 2006 10:53AM
I remember when I saw the Quake Done Quick speedrun on Nightmare back in the day. That was impressive to me.
KR @ Aug 17th 2006 11:10AM
"An unkown Shape from the world beyond your closet door," if that is your real name: you're unintentionally hilarious. Of course GTA sold more than Halo, it's multiplatform and available to far more people. However, I'll bet the farm that Halo had a higher attach rate to the XBox than GTA3 had to the PS2.
Why are so many clueless fanboys only impressed by old game speed runs? Acting like it's only impressive if it's on an old game is pathetic. If anything, it's more impressive to do it on a NEWER game - SMB3 has been around for over 15 years...plenty of time to analyze every f'ing pixel on the screen to get it down to an easy science.
It doesn't matter what you think about the "cool actor"of the character, by the way.
Michael W @ Aug 17th 2006 11:14AM
Mario speedruns are almost always done on the PC and are "tool assisted". That's not even CLOSE to the same thing as playing Halo 2 on Legendary and not dying once.
Deuce @ Aug 17th 2006 11:17AM
Those of you invoking the Mario speedruns don't fathom how impressive this is. To get an idea, go over to someone's house who owns it, and try doing just the first level of Halo 2 on Legendary, then come back and talk.
Honestly, the most impressive part was that he made it through *Legendary* without dying even *once*. On Legendary, you'll get slaughtered in about two seconds, from full health, if you start taking fire. Enemies have tons of hitpoints and smart AI, are agressive, and quite hard to kill. This would be impressive if he'd done it in 35 hours. That it was all condensed into 3.5 is insane. This isn't like Mario where you can memorize a single path and blow through it.
Sarge @ Aug 17th 2006 11:17AM
Eh, who cares about Halo 2 speedruns? The game is, like, two years old!
Remember, old-ness has nothing to do with it. Just because a game is 2 or 20 years old (and SMB3 is actually 16 years old, almost 18 in Japan, thank you) doesn't make speed runs any less impressive.
Honestly, I don't have the wherewithal to judge whether this is impressive or not, I suppose so, considering I've played Halo for around an hour, and managed to die a few times on normal difficulty, so he's definitely better than me in that regard. But can he beat Mike Tyson's Punchout, Mission: Impossible, Castlevania, or Ninja Gaiden? Be interesting to see.
Sarge out.
badbob @ Aug 17th 2006 11:25AM
Just curious and to more even out the comparison, was the top SMB3 speed run done without dying?
Don Jose @ Aug 17th 2006 11:34AM
That is impressive. I can't even tolerate PLAYING single-player Halo (1 or 2) more than about 10 minutes. Hopefully 3 is more interesting.
OTAM @ Aug 17th 2006 11:54AM
This guy's should do Ninja Gaiden Black on Hard next.
:D
steve @ Aug 17th 2006 11:58AM
Speaking of other records, how about brain age? if someone can do the calculationx100 in < 60seconds, that would be impressive
Cage @ Aug 17th 2006 12:13PM
"Yeah, I never cared much for the campaign mode either... It's sad, really, because Halo 2 is the main reason I bought an Xbox, and I don't even have Xbox Live."
Someone who has the time to come to a video game message board which is on the "internets" doesnt have Xbox live when they have Halo 2? Sounds fishy...
Calling TROLL on that one
gok @ Aug 17th 2006 12:14PM
You know it called Guinnes world recors !!2007!!. So even halo2 is kinda out of place there, and Mario would be even more. But then again, no one would care if it would featura amazing speedrun of Prey or some other not so well known game. If think that Halo is an excellent choice since its quite knew and very well known.
And yes it is very impressive that he didnt die even once. I tried first lvl on legendary difficulty once and got killed ny firts elite :|
Cage @ Aug 17th 2006 1:15PM
"You know it called Guinnes world recors !!2007!!. So even halo2 is kinda out of place there, and Mario would be even more."
gok, you werent the smartest one in the class. So you are saying that they take the tallest man from 2007? Not of all-time but from only 2007? The fastest, the biggest, the oldest gets carried over to each edition...
Trent @ Aug 17th 2006 2:58PM
This is pretty insane. It tooks me three weeks just to get past Cairo Station on Legendary. Freakin' white elites can take two grenades to the face without breaking a sweat.
I probably died 241 times on my Legendary run.
Nick James @ Aug 17th 2006 4:51PM
Bah, one of my college buddies did it in 3 hours, 25 minutes. But I think he died at least once. Not sure.
I'll have to have him video tape the next time he tries.
But still an impressive feat.
Lode @ Aug 18th 2006 2:00PM
I'd have to agree with Deuce here on this one: Beating Halo 2 on Legendary without dying, that's an achievment for you. Doing it in 3.5 hours? don't even ask.
Vcoalition @ Aug 18th 2006 4:58PM
Mike Tysons Super Punch out. . . . I bet this kid wouldn't make it to Tyson, and even if he did, Tyson was Satan to beat. SATAN, you hear me!?
Halo 2 is soo slow anyway. I'm a fast FPS fan. Quake, Doom2, Unreal. You know, where your legs carried you somewhere, rather than weighed you down. I beat Halo 1 on novice in like 12 hours. It was hard. . . I beat it, but wasn't interested in 2 because of how fricken long and slo it was.
Good for him, but get a life.
matt @ Aug 19th 2006 2:06PM
I first played the game with the trail version, then finished the campaigne once on heroic, then on ledgendary
I cant stand playing games without challenges.
