PlayStation network platform up and running

Buried deep in a GameSpot preview of the upcoming PlayStation 3 title Full Auto 2 is information that Sony's new online network, the PlayStation network platform, is already functional. This is what GameSpot had to say:
It's also worth noting that we played Full Auto 2's multiplayer on the actual PlayStation network platform, so apparently Sony already has its online gaming infrastructure up and running well ahead of the new system's release.
With final dev kits surfacing and other details starting to be fleshed out, it's nice to see the PS3 seems to finally be ready for launch come November.
[Thanks, Ethan]

don't forget Robert, in order to be ready for launch, they've still got to produce ps3's that actually work... let's not forget about cell's 8% yields and all the problems plaguing blu-ray, too :/
-"superfan" tactics.

hey i noticed on one of your links... this image

see it says "entitlement management" now this pic is alot older than the rumors of "entitlements" from EGM

"PlayStation Network Platform"
its certainly got a ring to it
Robert Summa @ Aug 17th 2006 8:34PM
Eric, that's why I never wrote about that "Entitlements" thing when EGM "broke" it. It was already known from those same pictures you just saw from E3. I didn't understand why everyone was picking that up as new news recently.
Eric Von Shpeel @ Aug 17th 2006 8:37PM
I see Robert. One thing that tickles me is that it is placed under the header Commerce, and also the management prefix.. it certainly sounds like it could actually be something re-deemable (similar to Nintendo star points with Nintendo published games?)
Cage @ Aug 17th 2006 8:40PM
"That seemed to be the case when we visited Sega today and walked into a room full of shiny new final-version PlayStation 3 development kits running the latest build of Full Auto 2: Battlelines"
1. You would think the games would be played on actual machines by now and not dev kits.
2. There is a difference between having a network setup that you can simply play games with others and one thats as in depth as marketplace.
3. Not here to flame. Its nice to see some info on their online service or to know it even exists(even though these actually says nothing about pricing, set-up, marketplace functionality, did I say PRICING, and connection speeds or lag).

Freakin copycats with the entitlements!! Sony come up with your own damn ideas!! Achievements are the best idea ever and its Xbox 360's not yours Sony!! Argh, arrogant jerks!
Ethan @ Aug 17th 2006 9:03PM
I cant wait either. Then I will be able to wake up, and instead of going two floors down to my basement to go on joystiq and my other news resources, I will just lean up in bed, turn it on, and go on my big screen. Then I will play some resistance and warhawk, chat with some friends, and play my music and videos. Then, when i leave to go to school, Ill get out my PSP, and stream some music to listen to, and play some games and go on the interweb. 3 more months.
NES @ Aug 17th 2006 9:03PM
See fanboys joystiq isnt anti sony i guess this good news. Not that it matters because when ps3 launches im assuming it would be up and running so to know that its up now is a complete waste of time...Should i feel better that it IS running...I doubt it
Enigma @ Aug 17th 2006 9:04PM
"1. You would think the games would be played on actual machines by now and not dev kits."
Even 360 games RIGHT NOW when previewed to the public are done on the dev kits. That has been done for years. It is for debugging purposes on non final builds.
This is nothing new to have a preview of games to the media on dev kits.
Robert Summa @ Aug 17th 2006 9:08PM
It's hard to imagine any real gamer NOT wanting a PS3. I know I can't wait for this thing to come out.
I just wish I could afford it when it did. Next year is gonna be a whole lot of fun for us gamers.
Joe S @ Aug 17th 2006 9:16PM
Does that imply that gamers who don't want a PS3 aren't "real"? :)
Dr.Swiss @ Aug 17th 2006 9:19PM
PlayStation Network Platform = PNP?
You got the PSP that connects to the PS3 that connects to the PNP with the pokey and the man and the rap that gives them the brain damage with their hippin and the hoppin and the bippin and boppin and they don't know what the jazz is all about, ya see?
Ethan @ Aug 17th 2006 9:19PM
Robert Summa, not to bash you or anything, because you are probably one of my favorite bloggers. But, you have a 360 right? right, because I saw the $400.00 one in the pics you posted of your crib a few days ago. And you have live right? right, because you said you were playing arcade games, that were downloaded off of live marketplace. So how could you not afford a $500 PS3, when you can afford a $400 360, and most likely more than 2 years of $50 live? I dont know, I just dont understand it when 360 owners say the PS3 is too expensive. Then again, Im not in your shoes, so I guess I cant speak for anyone but myself.
subnet6 @ Aug 17th 2006 9:20PM
This is good news. I try not to be negative but I was beginning to worry the PS3 may experience more delays.
I don't think things are as gruesome as some bloggers would have you believe but I definitely get the feeling that there are some serious struggles at sony to get everything together. Not so much like what I felt about MS and that they were "rushed" but moreso that Sony is just having difficulty with the scale of this project. So much new "megatech" in one box has GOT to be challenging to simultaneously develop/manufacture/market/etc.

Optimus Prime @ Aug 17th 2006 9:44PM
Oh man, PS3 is gonna rock. I suspect the next 3 months leading up to release will be very exciting. We're going to start to see more games announced, more adverts, more gameplay footage, and way more hype.
360 had the spotlight all to themselves last year, now all they have to show is Gears of War and HD-DVD dongle. I suspect Lou Dobbs wont be talking about Gears or the HD drive on CNN Money. Dont you?
Robert Summa @ Aug 17th 2006 9:57PM
Ethan,
Not to make you or anyone else here enraged with bitter jealousy, but the 360 and all the games for it have been given to me for review. I was sent that 360 about 2 weeks before launch by Microsoft. Because of my other journalistic duties, I also get pretty much every game and system.
The TV you see, I had to pay for that bad mutha. Not fun. As far as the PS3, I don't think Sony will be sending me one, simply because most press relations with Sony are spotty at best -- sort of an industry-wide gripe with the company.
So, I'll probably have to pay for the PS3 out of my own pocket -- which is looking pretty barren these days.
Thankfully, the Wii will probably be a lot cheaper, so I plan on picking that bad boy up on launch day. But, seeing as how I got a DS and DS Lite sent to me, there's a slight chance Nintendo will do the same with the Wii. At least, I'm hoping. But, I'd gladly pay for the Wii or PS3.
radjago @ Aug 17th 2006 10:09PM
They had better get it up and running soon. Developers have to have time to develop and test network code, online features, and playtest and balance multiplayer elements. Maybe they've been having issues with it and that's why they're so tight-lipped about it.

Just because Microsoft did it first, is Sony somehow not allowed to use a good idea? Bleh, fanboys.
Enigma @ Aug 17th 2006 11:04PM
"It's hard to imagine any real gamer NOT wanting a PS3. I know I can't wait for this thing to come out."
Not to sound like a fanboy or anything, but why do I want a PS3 again? What can it offer to me that a Wii360 cannot? I have a 1080i/720p Samsung, so the PS3's 1080p is a non-issue for me (and pretty much every gamer that isn't very upper-middle class). I am still unconvinced of the benefits of Blu-Ray from what I've read about picture quality. DVDs at 480p still look very good on my TV and I'm not ready to jump into the next VHS vs Betamax.
And the games? I see a couple of ports of mediocre 360 games (Full Auto, I'm talking about you) and some others, none of which say "system-seller" to me. The motion-sensing may have been cool if Sony didn't drop the rumble and if Nintendo wasn't doing this also.
Add to this a price equal to the Wii360, adn I see absolutely no reason to hop on the Sony bandwagon this time around.
Darth Pixel @ Aug 17th 2006 11:05PM
Xbots are in complete denial again.

Robert Summa, that's great! I never heard that before from one of the bloggers. That quote is definitely great: "It's hard to imagine any real gamer NOT wanting a PS3. I know I can't wait for this thing to come out." Awesome!
I have a 360, and I can't wait for a PS3. And a Wii. I just wish the 360 was more reliable though...
Yuppers @ Aug 17th 2006 11:43PM
#12, you obiviously don't know the difference between a debug unit and a development kit so you really shouldn't be posting about them.
Early 360 games are shown on special demo units that are able to read burned games and nothing else. Their only purpose is for testing and marketing.
PS2 had debug units as well. PS3 debug units don't excist at this point, only dev kits.
You really should do some research before posting to not make yourself look uninformed. Google is your friend :)

Please tell me you are joking and that aren't THAT stupid?
To this day, developers working on ANY game (PS2, Cube, Xbox, 360, PSP, DS, etc.) will use the SDKs to test games. The only time that debug systems are really used are when the QA teams are testing the game or when those on the development don't need the big debug stations.

One thing I noticed about that pic is how small the text is. With all the hub-bub about Dead Rising's small text, do you think there might be some trouble with Sony's PNP text size?

If Sony had left out the 'Entitlements' you'd probably have bashed Sony for not having something that Live had. Now that they have them, you're bashing them for having them. What exactly do you want here?

Great stuff!
It's a shame my router packed up practically seconds after I sold the free one BT sent me when I regraded.
I'm now using an old USB modem for crying out loud and the the thought of using ICS for my PS3 is tragic.
In fact the thought of having to have my PC on for any of my console's functions is tragic, not to mention a waste of electricity.
Tiago @ Aug 18th 2006 7:04AM

I can do all that now, I have a 360 and a PC with a remote (including being able to turn it on) hooked up to my DLP projector in my bedroom. The 360 and the PC cost me less put together than the PS3 will cost on its own and yet offer me double the functionality.
Why don't you wait till the PS3 comes out before touting how awesome it's functionality is. Else you are just going to look silly when it finally comes out.

Your crystal ball is cracked. Sony is about to PROVE that they can follow a trend and pump out an inferior version. Look at it for christsake. There's a REASON they haven't started spouting off the features...because they don't even have them finalized yet. Nice, solid business plan they have there with less than 3 months to go. Sony will be playing catch-up in the online department for quite a while yet...and as soon as Sony finally catches up to XBL's quality, MS will bring out something else to send Sony back to the stone age again.

You have a 200 dollar pc, some sophisticated piece of machinery that must be. If you can't afford a decent PC or a PS3 that's not our fault, get a better job then maybe you could.
Stop hating on the PS3, the PS3 is going to be the most advanced console ever, it will have a web browser so yeah I won't need a PC, I actually have a bad ass PC not your 200.00 piece of shit, I could do everything on my PS3.
PS The only one looking silly is you, you dumb fag.
Ethan @ Aug 18th 2006 9:35AM

Guess what, 360 doesnt come with a built in browser like PS3 does. It doesnt have a wifi adapter, or any of the other things I am interested in. And I dont know where in the world you got a computer for $100, but man, that has got to be one crappy PC.
x23, The short version is PNP not PSNP, I dont know where you have been, but next you come out of a 3 month stay under a rock, at least search google before posting rediculous theories. mmkay.

And getting the PC as a gift from your parents and only having to pay for the force-feedback joystick doesn't count!
Anyway, it's a good year for video gamers, if you're griping about who made up 'acheivements' or who copied who, you're just being a hater. Remember Microsoft only got into this business because Sony did so well jumping in a few years earlier.
Please remember, these companies don't care about you - don't look like a doof fighting for them in a 'comments' section on a blog.
Bub @ Aug 18th 2006 10:52AM
So it's confirmed. Microsoft pays Joystiq in hardware to keep up an anti-Sony blog, that parades itself as news. What's even funnier is all the crow I'm seeing the Joystiq crowd eat right about now. By the time of launch, you guys will be so stuffed you won't be able to move, not to mention you'll be trying to stick both feet in your mouth, as well!
Robert Summa @ Aug 18th 2006 11:06AM
Not to burst your bubble there Bub, but Microsoft sent me the 360 because I am the Tech Editor for Metro. They sent me the console 2 weeks before its launch, well before I started writing for Joystiq.
So, sorry, Microsoft is not paying "us" off in hardware. Just because I or anyone else gets games or hardware for reviews and such, doesn't mean we hold any loyalty to them.
