European PS2 price drop and pretty new pink model [update 1]

Following April's North American PS2 price drop, Sony has announced a European price drop for their top-selling console juggernaut. The formerly €149.99 and £104.99 prices will be lowered to €129.99 and £94.99 respectively, still a good deal more expensive than the $130 US asking price. They've also lowered the price of the Memory Card to €19.99. While this isn't quite the budget pricing we imagine the non-PS2-owner is waiting for, Sony has readied another flank in their assault on these stubborn holdouts.

The formula has worked disturbingly well for companies like Nintendo and Apple: a fresh coat of paint and you've opened up a whole new customer base. The new Pink PlayStation 2 will debut at the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany, August 23-27th. This sexy little thing is going out dancing with a pair of Dual Shock controllers and a Memory Card, and they're all wearing their prettiest matching pink outfits. And, UK-only, they'll be joining up with SingStar Pop at the karaoke club! Just how much will this little bundle of fun cost? €159.99 or £129.99 in UK (bundled with SingStar Pop). Seriously, resistance is futile Europe.

[Update: These things come in threes. It looks like the PS2 isn't the only console getting the pink treatment. Those rumors (from last year!) may have been premature, but Sony is finally making a pink PSP! Joy! It will be available Oct. 27th in Europe only for €229, or £169. They're also employing colorfully-named popstress P!nk to pimp their pink PSPs. We can think of a lot of things we'd rather have Sony invest their efforts in PSP-wise than a pink version. Just saying.]

Every single time I look at any Sony related post, the comments are somewhat like this:

So please, stop with the whole "copied" thing, especially when the posts on Joystiq are not remotely related to Sony copying features.

maybe has to do with the fact that ps2 is still selling and churning out games well into 2007, perhaps?

its nowhere near dead as gamecube or xbox, and sony didnt outright abandon it like a 4 year failure either.....

in fact, im surprised that xbox/gamecube are still $100+ in US, since they are practically dead.....while PS2 still kicks every other console (including 360) in the ass, sales-wise.

maybe those have somethin to do with it.

So an intelligent question. My girlfriend would love this. Can European Playstations play American releases, and can you get an American style power cord for this if so?

I'm more-or-less a Nintendo fan, but I have to say -- this model is sexaaaay. :D

Bob (#56) I took a look of those Japanese Hardware sales and you seem to be right, PS2 is selling quite well. I wouldn't pay over 150€ for it, but apparently some people are willing to do that. Like I said before, price drop came too late and it's not even that big drop.

That is a big question mark. I still remember when PS2 came out they promised that Psone games would still be made and released. After the PS2 release there were few new games for Psone, but they were not exactly A+ titles, just kiddie games and such. Psone basically died when PS2 was out. PS3 might do the same thing to the PS2 (Naomi: But...That's patricide!).

New consoles kill the old ones. Although I think that Xbox is still "alive", even when Xbox360 is out (haven't paid so much attention to this, so I might be wrong). It will be interesting to see how the old consoles will be supported when everyone has released their new systems.

Gamecube is just withering away, but it's not really dead yet. Not so many game releases anymore, but there are still some. Dead-ish.

Btw bob, capitalization is important "I helped my Uncle Jack off a horse" and all that.

Seems the new thing for Europe.. getting all the colours for things.. First they get a cool black DS. .now they get.. well not my cup of tea but it kinda looks cool. .I might want 1 controller that colour..

A pink PS2 isn't outrageous at all. They alr have pink ipods, pink RAZRs, and pink DS lites. pink PSP and PS2 naturally follow suit

Does anyone know where I can get one of these in the US? I was going to buy the UK version but I would need a converter, and I'm not sure it would play US games on it.. anyone know? I seem to recall someone telling me about a website that will color your PS2 any color . . any info on that?
