New MGS4 trailer is up for your pleasure

What can we say? Every time a new video of Metal Gear Solid 4 pops up, our mouths get all watery with anticipation for this game. This latest trailer captured from the show floor at Leipzig is no different.
Check out the video for yourself and prepare to dissect every detail. Even though it's only three minutes this time, it's a delicious three minutes. What's funny, though, is that you can hear some Sonic ring collecting in the background.

The Gekkous can sure kick ass
dvdguy @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:34AM
Ugh, the Sony bias rears it's head again. MGS4 drool drool, blah blah blah. Joystiq = Sony fanboys.
;-)
-dash- @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:36AM
The Metal Gear Rays are pretty scary now, they're more animal then robot.
Nintendo coin collecting? Don't you mean Sega ring ka-chinging good sir?
that guy @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:45AM
What a joke this Games Convention is so far. Yet another CG movie of Metal Gear (still no gameplay) and this time, we don't even get to see Snake in it.
Designerbradr @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:45AM
I don't get it.
I mean, it looked pretty and stuff – actually a little disturbing – but who am I supposed to be rooting for? What's the actual "game" to it?
My first impression was, it isn't a trailer for a game at all... just some deliciously directed CG animated movie.
Oh, and -dash- is right. That's the unmistakable sound of Sonic and the Secret of the Rings in the background.
Jason W @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:46AM
Ok when is the movie going to stop and show some game play. If this is gameplay it looks good but confusing.

socrates @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:55AM
Y'all that are surprised actual gameplay isn't being shown of MGS4? What, have you never heard of a MGS game before? Kojima doesn't release details like that. They tease, and keep people in the dark as to the real plotline. It has always worked well, and the gameplay has always turned out. You can disagree with the approach, but don't be surprised that's all you're getting at this point.
socrates @ Aug 23rd 2006 10:56AM
PS. What is the sound of Sonic and the secret rings? oh, yes, bo-RING, bo-RING.
(sorry, I had to do it. Sonic? Are you 8 years old??)
Chris @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:00AM
It's sony the CG never stops lol... give it a break how many times are they gonna show pretty CG sequenses?
I can see it already "ok we have bluray, we need to somehow show that the space is needed..."... " i know! MGS4, lets add so much HiDef CG Sequenses that it takes up 30 gigs of space!"
WE DONT WANT CGI WE WANT FU*KING GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE!
AND ANOTHER THING... STOP WITH THE GREEN... my god that green filter there using for the render/cg gives me a very bad headache after a minute of watching it... and it appears to have gotten more green in this video uggh.
Rask @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:05AM
As far as pre-rendered intro movies go, this is beautiful and the PS3, with all that additional disk space will be able to do those in spades.
I wish we could've stuff from the game engine though. Stuff like this doesn't prove much.
J B Cougar @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:09AM
That wasn't actually a Sonic game being played in the background, it was the sound of the Spectres of Sega Saturn and Dreamcast, hovering over the PS3 demo consoles.
Doomstalk @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:09AM
"Every time a new video of Metal Gear Solid 4 pops up, our mouths get all watery with anticipation for this game."
Meh, I'm not sure why. It's not like they've actually shown us any actual gameplay yet. Yes, it's really really pretty, we've known that for a while now. But if it plays exactly the same as the last 3 iterations, is there really that much point to the eyecandy?
jmc9115 @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:11AM
Ugh...next time please try to get the video from You Tube or somewhere else other than GameVideos. They take about 12 years to buffer.
ihya @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:13AM
Looks absolutely fantastic, pretty stoked for MGS4 now.
Superfood @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:16AM
"WE DONT WANT CGI"
Uhh... dude....
Well I have some good news for you. This footage, like the footage previous to it, is entirely in-game footage. If the sequence were CGI, it would have been pre-rendered before hand and compiled into a video format. This to, as you say, fill 30 gigs of blu-ray space. What you see here is excellent use of the imbedded Ageia physics processor of the PS3. The static worlds of present will soon be made a thing of the past. :)
ohms @ Aug 31st 2006 7:14PM
The footage is probably rendered in-game, like previous trailers, so it wouldnt be pre-rendered CG. When the first MGS4 trailer was shown at TGS last year, Kojima paused the footage and moved the camera around in real time to prove it.
DBX00 @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:21AM
The game isn't coming out until like Fall 2007; why would they show game footage a year in advance? Give me a break. People seem to forget that the storyline is what draws the player into a game and these CG sequences during the game will further bring the player closer to the story and developing characters in the game.
T-Bag @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:24AM
Did a bunch of vegans make that clip? The reason I ask is because all I saw was a bunch of cows massacring some mercenaries that probably eat meat... “Moo”, wtf? What genius thought that making mechanized cows would instill fear into each and every gamers hearts? All I was thinking that whole time was that McDonald’s gonna have a hard time staying in business.
MajorBill @ Aug 26th 2006 2:11PM
I'm looking foward to MGS4, Kojima wont let this one go thru the floor.
Also, it might not seem like gameplay, but I think that it sorta is. You can see the film stutter at times. It might be a while since we see us playing Snake, but maybe this is showing off the AI.
Dux @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:27AM
I would not wanna be the guy to fight those Metal Gears.
Ciryon @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:28AM
LOL! This is no CG.... Sigh... Check out the new screenshots and you will clearly see that this teaser is in-game
Doomstalk @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:28AM
Why? Because if I just wanted to sit and watch cutscenes all day I'd go to the movies, or at least play a Final Fantasy game. Say what you want about story, but in the end you play games to have fun, not to marvel at how many polygons it took to make Snake's 70s porn star moustache.
Zeichrat @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:41AM
Gotta love the way those chikin´legged headless cybernetic cows did their job... It would be awesome if Kojima Productions replicated the way the human characters move and feel in the trailer, with the hand gestures and urban/guerrilla tactics.
MusashiX2 @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:47AM
this is the in-game engine. that was proved back at e3 that these MGS4 videos are all real time. so this is what it will look like when you play it. kojima always just shows cutscenes for his trailers. its what he does, and he does a damn good job of this. i think this one is just to show how crazy these new metal gears are and how bloody this war is. i wish it was a longer one, but i like it. so what is so bad about the long cutscenes of MGS? Doomstalk, you say you play games to have fun. why is watching a cutscene immediately not fun? lets face it, the games that tell a story while you are playing usually do not tell as good a story as the one that interrupts gameplay for a cutscene. i have always loved MGS trailers and cutscenes, they are just fun.
VampireHunter Z @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:47AM
It's hard to tell from that off screen low rez video but it just might be the in-game engine. I'm just going by history here. Kojima traditionally uses the in-game engine to do his cutscenes. Every now and again he throws in some real life video (like Hiroshima bombing) but for the most part the cutscenes are not CGI.
OOOOPs @ Aug 23rd 2006 11:58AM
If the game engine renders at 720p, then they will most likely used prerendered cutscenes at 1080p..why not, there's more than enough space on the disc.
Rask @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:02PM
Someone needs to get a definition check. Cutscenes inserted into a game are usually not rendered with the game engine.
Check out the Mass Effect E3 Demo. That is usually what an game-engine movie will look like. They will usually look like a scripted sequence of events with the actual models you're playing the game with.
As I said previously though, it is a fantastic looking cutscene. Konami's got some talented animators.
Doomstalk @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:04PM
Cutscenes aren't fun because they're counter to the point of gaming. Games are about you, the player, DOING something, not about watching passively. If all you're going to do is sit and watch, you might as well save yourself $40 and just buy a DVD.
Jo @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:05PM
This is all realtime boys.
If the contrast is a little jarring to people who think Kameo and Prey are impressive, well... get used to it.
Doomstalk @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:09PM
When did I say it was prerendered. You guys seem to have difficulty differentiating between "in-engine cutscene" and "gameplay". What we see above is definitively the former.
Bloo @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:14PM
"This is all realtime boys.
If the contrast is a little jarring to people who think Kameo and Prey are impressive, well... get used to it."
LOL. Of course it's realtime. I can't wait for it too! And it even looks as good as Kameo and Prey. Get used to not playing every good game if you're not going to own every console.
loungemonkey @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:21PM
It is like you people have never seen or played an MGS game before. Kojima and his team always achieve the look of the trailers in the final game and sometimes even surpase it. Does no one remember how MGS2 TGS trailer? What was shown graphics wise was just as good if not better than the graphics of the trailer.
Why do people doubt Kojima now?
Advanced @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:24PM
So let me understand this...
The PS3 can play movies, in real time, and that is impressive?
I want to see Gameplay. You still can't even compare this game to a 360 Game until you see the in game graphics. Im sure it will be fantastic. Its like saying a movie is going to be "The Best" after watching a 60 minute trailer.
Nick @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:26PM
Yes this is in-game engine. Go back and look at the blood when someone is shot, it is really badly done. I doubt the actual game will have quite the same physics as the truck that gets kicked over by the metal gear, but who knows, it has a whole year.
the_meat_at_the_end_of_the_stick @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:34PM
"I doubt the actual game will have quite the same physics as the truck that gets kicked over by the metal gear, but who knows, it has a whole year"
Yes, it's the in-game graphics, but no, there are no physics involved. Or AI, or anything that makes up gameplay. That's why they can have such good graphics. Because they don't have to push anything else except a scripted sequence. And then render the hell out of it.
MusashiX2 @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:45PM

but why is it ok for ppl to go ga-ga over the 1 minute halo 3 trailer? double standard
J B Cougar @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:48PM
Well I'm glad we cleared everything up, so let's recap: First, this is real time because a bunch of people's comments said it was. Second, its real time because Kojima used cutscenes in real time on all his previous endeavours? Ok, so then tell me, how many were on the PS3? None? And please, use as much snark and wise-assery to respond as is expected from comments in Joystiq comment sections. All I see here are a bunch of assumptions and aplogists. Logic error. Show me proof this is in game/real time/whatever and the Sony Logic will melt away. Otherwise, all the people asking for gameplay are right as rain. Konami might as well have be dangling a shiny in front of your eyes. It'd be much cheaper than this must have been to put together and would have had the same effect.
loungemonkey @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:56PM
It's a good analogy between MGS4 and Halo 3. Why is it ok to call Halo 3 a masterpiece already but not MGS4?
Hell look at the first footage of Halo 2, the final game didnt look like that in the least. But with both MGS and MGS2, the final games looked comparable to the very first trailers shown.
You people like to jump down people's throats too quickly.
CuddleFish @ Aug 23rd 2006 12:59PM
There's nothing wrong with the cut-scenes in Metal GearSolid, they look great and advance the story, it's the 30 minute codec conversations that suck.
Gogandantis @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:01PM
Well, that's definitely the sound of Sonic collecting a ring. Which makes sense since I do believe Nintendo showed a Sonic and the Secret of the Rings trailer at LGC... So were Sony and Nintendo's booth right next to each other and playing their respective trailers at the same time?
the antique @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:11PM
all of you that said you want to see gameplay are idiots that have no knowledge whatsoever of hideo kojima's strategy. He almost never shows gameplay before the game is done.
Rask @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:22PM
The Halo 3 trailer was a nowhere near a masterpeice. It just got a lot of hype because it was the first announcement of the game.
Frankly, this whole trailer business is kinda stupid cause all everyone is offering here is opinions and repeating marketing BS fed to us by talking heads at their respective companies.
mercatfat @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:22PM
Goddammit, people.
Metal Gear Solid has always been extremely stroy-centric. There's still plenty of gameplay, but unlike most American action titles, the story comes first. Perhaps it is more "experience" than game, but it is much, much more satisfying than any movie or game I've ever played. MGS3 basically makes me puke in my mouth with a bulimic joy whenever I think about it. I haven't enjoyed a game, movie, book, anything as much as it, ever.
I'm a huge story nut, though. I'm one of those three people that played all of the Grand Theft Auto games for the story and never actually spent more than a few hours messing around in any of them.
Asking for gameplay shots is kinda silly unless you really think it'll be drastically different than any of the other games. Further, if it was significantly different, Kojima would keep the lid on that until the last moment he can. In case you want to try to poke holes in that, I'm specifically referring to Raiden.
Kojima doesn't do pre-rendered CG. Never has in his entire career. He simply uses a lot of tricks similar to the Dead or Alive team to push a system to its limits. You'd be amazed how much more detail you can cram in when you're not trying to put as many pock-marks and age-spots on every face you possibly can.
DarkPen @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:31PM
to mr. t-bag: if you were following info about mgs4, you'd realize they're using 3 animal sounds: a cow, a horse, and a cicada. the last part, cicada, really doesn't apply to the american audience, as our trees aren't covered in them like they are in eastern asia. they've always used animal noises for the metal gears since mgs1 (can't say for mg or mg2), but the reason to use cicadas, cows, and horses is to bring a sense of mental disarmament, psychological warfare, as it is intentioned to bring back thoughts of your childhood. though, in my opinion, i somehow doubt that'll really apply, with the angry giant cow-noise-making bipedal frogleg robots running around, and having some wierd bowel movement when finished (seriously, i think they're pissing or shitting, that yellow stuff). I just hope there's a direct feed available to these videos soon.
DarkPen @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:35PM
actually, kojima has done non-ingame cutscenes for a few select games, but that's from long ago.
hohoho @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:39PM
it's probably my ears or the crappy audio record, I hear a bunch cows getting excited?
no no I mean the mechas, not the fanboys....
I'll wait for the trailer from tgs. That's where all the real action will be.
hohoho @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:41PM
forgot to add, the last bit of the bots getting orgasmic and farting jets of greenish gaseous is truly next gen!
DarkPen @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:42PM
JB cougar: they showed that it was indeed in-game back when they showed the first true mgs4 trailer (which excludes that one using mgs3 graphics with the laugh track) at the tokyo game show. I believe you can video google up the video of them playing with the lighting, moving the camera around the axis of solid snake, etc. there's your proof.
charlie @ Aug 23rd 2006 1:48PM
Yes everyone, let's blame Sony for Hideo not showing any gameplay footage! It is Sony's and not Hideo's fault for only showing us these cursed and what we claimed to be "CG videos"!
Chris, and Advanced, are listening to yourselves? I hate Sony as much as the next guy, but this is plain ridiculous.
