Confirmed: Black and Pink DS Lites in U.S. Sept. 13

Following close on yesterday's rumors, Nintendo officially announced this morning that the DS Lite will be available in black and pink -- sorry, that's officially "Onyx and Coral Pink" -- in the U.S. on Sept. 13.
The DS is the latest in a long line of pink Nintendo portables in America, starting with the Game Boy Pocket and continuing through the Game Boy Micro. Elsewhere in the world, systems like the PSP, and PS2 will soon be available in fabulous pink. You can even gussy up your Xbox 360 with the girliest of colors through a faceplate. Given this sea of light red systems, can a pink PlayStation 3 be far behind?
Yes. Yes, it probably can.
[Thanks, Daniel]

AWESOME, now us aussies are the only region left suffering with only one colour (white) :(
Wot The?
Don't we get these colours too?
I guess nintendo is finding it hard to keep up with demand, especially with Japan eating up 150,000+ units PER WEEK!. That figure may even double with FFIII being released recently, i can't wait to see the japanese weekly sales figures.
Ethan @ Aug 24th 2006 10:03AM
wow, nintendo is so innovative, Making an "Onyx and Coral Pink" DS lite. Oh wait...
knot_U @ Aug 24th 2006 10:03AM
Dang it, I should have waited for this in stead of buying my lite the day it came out, oh well.

Daniel @ Aug 24th 2006 10:05AM
Hey Ethan, you do realize these colours came before the pink PSP/PS2, in Japan and Europe, right?
Todd @ Aug 24th 2006 10:07AM
Awesome. I'll get the black DS Lite to match the black Wii.
.ed @ Aug 24th 2006 10:09AM
awesome.
awesome.
Pharaoh @ Aug 24th 2006 10:11AM
It's not coral pink - it's lightish red.
BIGGEN @ Aug 24th 2006 10:14AM
wow, different colors, woopee!
Wendy @ Aug 24th 2006 10:21AM
Now i'll finally go out and buy a DS.
fagaymer @ Aug 24th 2006 10:23AM
Wow. How original. Didn't I just read about the Pink PS2 and PSP featuring exclusive content by Pink herself? It's good to see Nintendo still innovating. NOT!
AG @ Aug 24th 2006 10:24AM
And Sony copies Nintendo...
Hmmm, I don't think so!
MikeyJoe @ Aug 24th 2006 10:25AM
Umm...guys? They're just colors. They've been out in Japan/Europe for a LONG time and they're finally bringing them here.
So chizill.
.ed @ Aug 24th 2006 10:28AM
@ you morons
Dreamcast, Gamecube, GBA, SP, DS, and DS lite all had pink versions before the slim ps2 and psp. Know the facts before you claim sony was the pink innovator. they just copied what they saw working for nintendo and co. to sell more systems too.
do the people who read this blog even know about the industry?
Alcoholic Zombie @ Aug 24th 2006 10:28AM
Like I said before..
If I get a pink one as a present, I am smashing on the spot!
The only thing I like to be pink is my brains! BRAINS!
Marty @ Aug 24th 2006 10:32AM
Ummm, There already was a pink DS and a black GBA... so if anything... Sony copied Nintendo (to those who are complaining about it) but in all honesty!!!!
They all copied the rainbow!!! Get some original colors!!! Quit copying the color spectrum!!!!
oh and I am glad its coral pink, because I really didn't want to ask for Pink, but coral pink is ok!!!
Daniel @ Aug 24th 2006 10:35AM
Are Sony fanboys honestly as clueless and short-sighted as they make themselves out to be? I mean, really, it boggles the mind.
KR @ Aug 24th 2006 10:37AM
I'm fine with the white. The pink is for girls, and on the black one scratches and smudges will show up a lot more noticably than on the white.
Jeff @ Aug 24th 2006 10:39AM
"do the people who read this blog even know about the industry?"
Given that the average age here seems to be about 9, I'd say probably not.
I'm gonna get flamed for that I know, but there are an almost ridiculous number of posters in almost every thread here that either do not remember or just never even knew about things that happened in the industry only 2 or 3 years ago. So they're either adults who are completely new to gaming and are also coincidentally acting like morons online, or they're so young that they both just learned to type and just got their first game system, which they naturally think is the firstest and the bestest at everything. I think the latter is a lot more likely.
I mean Christ, the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP all came in pink way, way before the PSP was even a twinkle in Sony's eye. So why is this even a "debate"? It's not as if different colors are some big innovation anyway. Ooooo pink - quick, patent that idea!
Trachalio @ Aug 24th 2006 10:43AM
Are Sony fanboys honestly as clueless and short-sighted as they make themselves out to be? I mean, really, it boggles the mind.
Daniel, I think you could edit that down to just "are fanboys are short-sighted and clueless." I mean, that's the whole point of being a fanboy right? Ingorning anything that doesn't involve your favorite console/game/movie/book/etc al? ;)
Ichidou @ Aug 24th 2006 10:45AM
damnit Jeff, lol
I was just about to say most of what you did
Alcoholic Zombie @ Aug 24th 2006 10:47AM
I think people should stick to buying games that trains your delicious(sp?) brain to be smarter & fatter like Brain Age.
It's the common problem that too many people are retarded and their brains are not even worth my time to chew on.
It's like beef jerky, but in brain form.
Jason W @ Aug 24th 2006 10:48AM
I like the white. The black will get all smudged up. Besides the white looks like a companion of the 360.
J B Cougar @ Aug 24th 2006 10:51AM
Sony fanboys and Sony Logic: Why worry about silly things like facts ("wow, nintendo is so innovative, Making an "Onyx and Coral Pink" DS lite. Oh wait..." , "Wow. How original. Didn't I just read about the Pink PS2 and PSP featuring exclusive content by Pink herself? It's good to see Nintendo still innovating. NOT!") when you can just make shit up?
Quick question: What goes thru a fanboy's mind when he's so obviously proven wrong, as in this case? Just curious as to whether the denial is so strong that nothing happens; it just fills with that idiotic "leet speak" and blocks it out; or if there really is an epiphany of some kind.
ZENegade @ Aug 24th 2006 10:55AM
"I like the white... Besides the white looks like a companion of the 360."
In that case I am TOTALLY getting a black one to go with my PS3 and PSP.
Daniel @ Aug 24th 2006 10:57AM
Good point Trachalio, indeed. I just think Sony fanboys eclipse other fanboys *just* a bit. Keep in mind I have nothing against Sony; just the fanboys.
J.B. Cougar - that's a great question. None of the Sony fanboys will be able to answer that though. They're too busy making ridiculous posts about how lolbad Nintendo and the Xbox is.
Revolution @ Aug 24th 2006 10:57AM
I got a pretty cool looking skin for my DS so I don't feel too bad about missing the black one
Piranacon @ Aug 24th 2006 10:58AM
God bless fanboys :)
A flame war over a colour :S
Erik Novak @ Aug 24th 2006 11:05AM
I prefer the PSP because it has better games, but this is a smart move by Nintendo. They're the kings of repackaging the same stuff over and over and getting away with it, and on top of that, September looks to be a good month for them (Mario 3 on 3, Contact, Megaman ZX, Pokemon, Rocket Slime).
Jose @ Aug 24th 2006 11:05AM
@Pharoe
They already have a color for "lightish-red" it's called PINK!
Duscrom @ Aug 24th 2006 11:10AM
Fanboy Truthiness... Sure if you look at facts and read stuff like a news website... then MAYBE, there were other systems that came out before the Pink PS2/PSP... but My Gut tells me that Nintendo is copying sony.
Omega697 @ Aug 24th 2006 11:13AM
@Erik Novak:
Yeah, God forbid Nintendo give the people what they want. People have been clamoring for black DS Lites since they were announced. Nice try trying to hide your inner Sony fanboy.
Teh Flaconer @ Aug 24th 2006 11:15AM
I think that once I get tired of one of my DS games I'll swap out my white DS lite for a black one. Not a bad trade, old worn out game for a brand new shiny black DS? Who wouldn't want that?
32_Footsteps @ Aug 24th 2006 11:16AM
I'm personally wondering how much time people spend staring at the casing of their video game systems. I usually think it's more productive to just play the damn thing myself.
Of course, that reminds me of when I got my Gamecube. I almost got an orange (sorry, "spice") one, but my wife said she wouldn't let me. So I'm quite familiar with how much people can nitpick the color of consumer electronics.
Still, I think it's worth it to keep in mind that if you've got style, any color can look good.
Teh Flaconer @ Aug 24th 2006 11:19AM
The main reason I want a black one is because I coughed coke up all over my white one... Now on the edges of my white one it's all funky.
Melissapants @ Aug 24th 2006 11:30AM
Am I the only one here that actually likes the pink DS? I already have the original (fat) one, but if I ever decide to upgrade it's totally a toss up between this or the black one.
Oh, and my "gut" tells me that business is business and that companies will try to emulate what's successful until the end of time. Meh.
dsub @ Aug 24th 2006 11:31AM
I knew my waiting for a DS would pay off. Black DS. Score!
Jay @ Aug 24th 2006 11:35AM
I love how the Pink Euro DS Lite gets a minor notice as an update on one post, but when America get the black and pink DS Lite they have their own post.
retardiculous. as Alan Partridge would say.
Petrie @ Aug 24th 2006 11:46AM
I'll never understand why people are so critical of Nintendo for releasing different colors and versions of systems. Is it so wrong to give people a choice? That's just good business. You get the color of your choosing, and Nintendo gets to make more profits, leading to more innovation and better games.
Being able to customize things is all the rage nowadays. Can't blame Nintendo for following this trend in order to remain relevant and get back to the forefront of gaming. It's amazing how easily a color change can get a console in the hands of a new demographic. My girlfriend suddenly wanted a DS when they released the Teal Nintendogs version, and now she's upset that only Europe is getting the Pink PS2. People love aesthetically pleasing things. It only makes sense to market your product as such.
Eric Bostrom @ Aug 24th 2006 11:46AM
[08:24] pthree: ern (my wife) wants to sell our white dsl's to get them
[08:24] pthree: i say, im not willing to take that loss
[08:24] pthree: she says: you just don't have your eye on the tiger
[08:24] pthree: i says: that sounds like some markety BS
She's willing to trade 'em in, anyone know the current trade in value? DS phat's were $70 for a while there.
Petrie @ Aug 24th 2006 11:51AM
@ Eric
Don't trade them, this is why Ebay is your friend. You could probably manage to recoup most of your investment on there. Might pay $20 each for the upgrade.
MrD @ Aug 24th 2006 11:55AM
Jay, I think it's just because we got the black ones. It would probably be the same for us if we already had the black, and were only getting the pink.
H-QB @ Aug 24th 2006 12:26PM
Different colors are good. But...
I WANT A LIMEGREEN DS and maybe a SKY BLUE one too.
If they had those, I'd buy them, the pink one AND the black one. Why? Well, my reason would be ... so i have a different colored DS for each day of the working week. DSLites are equally as stylish as a PSP in that sense. lol
cringer8 @ Aug 24th 2006 12:47PM
I'm holding out for Zelda green.
Nick James @ Aug 24th 2006 1:24PM
So if a car manufacturer releases a car in black, and then another car follows suit... they ripped it off? Seriously, what the fuck is going on with these comment threads?
And I'm going to get a black one for me (all my electronics are black or silver - minus my 360 and DS), and a pink one for my girlfriend, since she steals mine all the time.
Score!
On an unreleted note, did you guys know that DecalGirl.com provides a completely black case for the 360? Not just a skin, but a case. A few are on eBay.
It looks pretty sharp, I'm considering getting it so it matches my PS3 (stfu fanboys) and possibly Wii.
Aex @ Aug 24th 2006 2:24PM
I think I'll get a pink one for my GF on christmas, with her very own copy of nintendogs.
And don't get mad at the fanboys snarking comments about innovation. Whenever sony does something you nintendo fanboys go on and on and on about nintendo's innovation, and sony's lack of it. Just realize that nintendo isnt all that innovative and sony isnt all that un-innovative and god will smile down upon thee and grant thee happiness with multiple consoles.
David @ Aug 24th 2006 2:57PM
In response to post #1:
What did Australia get?
The DS Lite two weeks before the US, and four weeks before Europe, that's what!
I felt quite smug reading posts on US forums about the Lite saying 'only one week to go' when mine was already a week and three charges old!
White is the best colour anyway.
Ry @ Aug 24th 2006 3:03PM
"Onyx" DSL here I come.....
BlackYoshi @ Aug 24th 2006 3:45PM
Took them long enough. I hate how Nintendo does the "staggered" color release, used to drum up sales and screw early adopters.
unimental @ Aug 24th 2006 4:49PM
47 comments (as of my pageload) and not a single one pointing out how ridiculously "Apple" those pics look?
Question... are those official Ninty pics or are those Joystiq mods for the post?
Disclaimer: I am a Nintendo fan (since 1985) and am in no way implying that Nintendo is copying Apple. I am, however, stating that my mind immediately registered "Apple" when I first saw the post pic.
Hood Ornament @ Aug 24th 2006 7:37PM
First off, I would like to say that I personally am kind of bumming now as I wish that the Black DSL came out earlier as I like the color black and it looks good sitting in my black truck, but the white DSL looks great when its ssitting on top of my 360 charging from the USB.
A comment made that cought my eye that hasnt really been adresssed yet was that the PSP has better games, simply just no, it might have 3 or 4 alright games compared to the few dozen that suck, as for media functionality big deal, you know what I buy a game system for, playing games. Imagine that. Last time I knew the PSP was not the fastest selling videogame system ever, compared to the DS which has sold over 22 million, and is currently the fastest selling system in Japan and the United states. Now for saying that Sony is the innovative one while Nintendo just repackages old stuff. HA, this is all I have to say

Hell, I remeber the original game boys and how they even came in many different colors.
