IGN says PS3 aces 360 in Virtua Tennis

As IGN was checking out the new Virtua Tennis 3 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 at Leipzig, they made note of the "slight" differences between the two versions saying that the PS3 edged out the 360 when it came to graphical dominance.
Plainly put, the PS3 looked a little better with sharper textures and incredibly detailed player models. It was almost eerie when we noticed the veins sticking out in our character's forehead.
To be fair, however, IGN does say that the different versions are being worked on by two different companies -- which could account for the slight differences. But, we're sure this won't stop the many fanboys ready to defend their camp on this new info.

For an extra 200 dollars i can get veins in my player's foreheads??! That's just eerie and awesome! Way to go IGN!
Neil @ Aug 24th 2006 7:34PM
I heard AM2 was going to put Shenmue 1 & 2 on the PS3 version of Virtua Tennis to fill the extra storage space.
Rask @ Aug 24th 2006 7:34PM
OMG, This tennis game has shown me the light. Hallujah, I have been SAVED!!!
Here Sony, take my 850$ cdn!
Where's the lineup for the BluRay logo tattoo?
Kevin @ Aug 24th 2006 7:34PM
Either way i'm just excited to get Virtua Tennis again! I gotta get around to buying one of them 360s...
Cage @ Aug 24th 2006 7:35PM
Flame bait. Hide the women and children. Shut the doors. Joystiq needs hits.
(Although they say it themselves, "It was made by two different companies", its posted anyway? F it!)
LordMinogue @ Aug 24th 2006 7:37PM
Well, this is to be expected. I didn't buy the 360 because it was the most powerful consol out there, I bought it for Oblivion, Halo 3, Gears of War, Lost Planet, and other games that I want to play. Personal preference drove me (along with the ability to get accessories half priced through a friend).
I thought the difference between the systems would be much greater; I'm dissapointed in you Sony.
Let's go back a few years, when the XBOX was graphics supreme (Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Splinter Cell). MS fanboys were all "Graphics are Supreme" and Sony fanboys were all "Games are Supreme."
Look now at how the arguments are reversed. Its like how the Democrats and Republicans switched platforms; everyone who is a fanboy is too caught up in the conflict to notice or care.
If the power of advertising gets much greater it will be 1984 all over again.
Cage @ Aug 24th 2006 7:38PM
"I heard AM2 was going to put Shenmue 1 & 2 on the PS3 version of Virtua Tennis to fill the extra storage space."
I hear its going to include the entire TV coverage of the US Open, Wimbledon, and French Open in HD! With room to spare. Oh...forgot to say there will be Hello Kitty coverage too...
PhillyRampage @ Aug 24th 2006 7:39PM
That's great, but the graphic still look crappy.
notafan @ Aug 24th 2006 7:45PM
what the fuck is up with roddicks neck in that pic?
exy @ Aug 24th 2006 7:48PM
Did anyone else notice that the tennis player's neck in that pic looks freaking WEIRD. As soon as I looked a shiver went up my spine.
Next gen graphics = Creepy long monster necks. Consider this game purchased.
Crono @ Aug 24th 2006 7:49PM
Cage,
I couldn't stop laughing when I read your posts. =)
suicidesnowman @ Aug 24th 2006 7:50PM
@notafan
Didn't you hear? with all the extra Blu-Ray space, AM2 added a "turkey neck" secret entitlement just in time for the holidays!
GOBBLE GOBBLE BITCHES!
Mitchell @ Aug 24th 2006 7:50PM
Who cares? It's all about Wii-Sports Tennis.
Alkaiser @ Aug 27th 2006 1:49PM
notafan & exy:
If you're worried about his neck, you should look at the close-ups of the other players on actual groundstrokes. First, their index fingers all look like they're not cooperating with the rest of the hand, and second, they don't have wrists, so much as they have "hand hinges".
Brad Lee @ Aug 24th 2006 7:51PM
So the 360 vs. PS3 is exactly like the PS2 vs. XBox. In other words, what we all saw coming. The XBox didn't sell because it had better graphics than the PS2, it sold well because it was a nice alternative to the PS2 with plenty of worthy exclusives under it's belt.
What I'm curious about is whether each game is going to cost the same or not. I'd be pretty pissed if I had to pay an extra $10 for forehead veins V_v
Blackie @ Aug 24th 2006 7:53PM
I love how fanboys get all pissed off when stuff like this turns up.
I.e.
"OMG, This tennis game has shown me the light. Hallujah, I have been SAVED!!!
Here Sony, take my 850$ cdn!
Where's the lineup for the BluRay logo tattoo?"
It's not supposed to show you the light, it's just saying Tennis looks better on PS3...
halobreaker @ Aug 24th 2006 7:55PM
If you ask a lot of single women though they'll say it's worth paying extra for the veins. =P
Guilt @ Aug 24th 2006 7:58PM
Hahaha no Guitar Hero for 360!
hahahaha!
Ethan @ Aug 24th 2006 7:58PM
Awesome, I love tennis and am definitely buying a PS3, its a win-win for me. Oh, and Cage, what about the aussie open, or dont australians matter?
Alex @ Aug 24th 2006 7:59PM
HAHAHA Suicide Snowman, you made me laugh so hard
matt @ Aug 24th 2006 7:59PM
I have plenty of creepy throbbing veins but I don't think anyone is going to render them for a video game.
Brad Lee @ Aug 24th 2006 8:01PM
Wow, I just took a second look at the picture and it IS really creepy. The guy looks like a freakin' camel in that picture!
And to clarify my last post, by the 360 vs. PS3 being the same as PS2 vs. XBox I meant mostly graphical power. XBox had a slight graphical edge to PS2 but it didn't really help it sell, especially since most games didn't really take advantage of the XBox's extra power. Now it seems the roles are reversed with the PS3 being more powerful than 360. Will it help it sell? I doubt it, especially if all we're getting is neck veins.
Maybe thats why Sony pushed BluRay onto the PS3, so we could stare at hideous neck veins!
Sponge @ Aug 24th 2006 8:04PM
He broke his neck!! You can see the bone sticking out in horrible graphic detail!!
Chris @ Aug 24th 2006 8:08PM
LordMinogue, you are an idiot.
First of, it's all about the games to any fanboy. Nrev5, 360, and ps3.
I'm sorry you 360 fanboys thought the 360 was gonna be more powerful.
If Oblivion, Halo 3, and etc are supposed to be what drives the 360, that's pathetic.
Sony fanboys get to brag on how powerful the ps3 is yes, but given the fact it's not out yet, we still will get to brag about better games also.
You must have a secret supply of every ps3 game eh? So you're able to conclude the 360 games like Oblivin (zomg, a trasnaprent wall!) is better than all the ps3 games you have/played right?
And lastly....
gamecube-inovation
xbox-fps,sports
ps2-power&huge library (on top)
wii-inovation again
360-power,multiple genres
ps3-MORE power, multiple genres. (on top again)
OTAM @ Aug 24th 2006 8:09PM
Of course graphics mean everything, that's why Xbox cleaned the floor with the Gamecube and PS2 right?
....right guys?
futurebiblehero @ Aug 24th 2006 8:11PM
That "uncanny valley" thing really is beginning to ring true. They can model a character down to his urethra and without any artistry involved, it's going to look terrible. I don't care about seeing individual nosehairs if something looks soulless, as this does.
Developers should take a long, hard look at WoW and Everquest 2. Gameplay arguments aside, look at which requires the beefier system and which is infinitely more pleasant to look at (and more successful to boot).
I've been a gamer for nearly 20 years and crap like this is just beginning to disinterest me.
Mountain Dew @ Aug 24th 2006 8:13PM
His neck? What about the way he's holding the racket? Isn't that a little, oh I dunno, unnatural?
And what's with the two separate companies working on the same product? Is the PS3 that difficult to master you have to use a totally different company?
uchiha5 @ Aug 24th 2006 8:16PM
Chris, Gamecube had more power then PS2 so I think you should change that. And did Gamecube truly innovate?
TheBigC @ Aug 24th 2006 8:17PM
This looks like the end for Microsoft.
Knoxximus @ Aug 24th 2006 8:19PM

uchiha5,
Sasuke-kun, True, GameCube had more proccesing power but their media was too small to hold any large content games which make them on par with each others.
jay cee @ Aug 24th 2006 8:28PM
it's funny how when it was xbox vs ps2 some of you guys were like oh the xbox is the best thing ever now that the tables have turned it you guys don't want to hear it you guys crack me up

New Life Rule: The next person who writes a comment saying one system is better than the other is forced to sell their current-love child of a game system and use that money to buy the system they hate, oh and also marry a relative of the same sex preferably, but not limited to, their grandparents.

Speaking of uncanny valley, Roddick....he looka likkle like a lizard....

s7r1k3r @ Aug 24th 2006 8:42PM
you guys are missing the main point of the article. The games are made by 2 DIFFERENT COMPANIES. That alone should warrant this comparison void.
Self Conshus @ Aug 24th 2006 8:46PM
You guys are really out of touch. I mean, they just said the PS3 version looked a little better. I don't think I read "OMG! GO BUY A PS3!". Take a chill pill, Fanboys. I swear, sometimes it feels like the comments on this site are all made by 12 year olds.
Tallican @ Aug 24th 2006 8:47PM
This discussion is an absolute crack up, I love it!
R0DJOh @ Aug 24th 2006 8:53PM
Im sure veins in players' heads are seriously important in a tennis game. I mean ZOMG the innovation!
fagaymer @ Aug 24th 2006 8:54PM
I hope we can undress Roddick on the PS3 version! Yippee!

Have you ever actually played tennis, or at least watched a tennis match? Its natural for your arm to go in that position after hitting a serve with heavy topspin. I would know, since I actually play a sport (unlike most of the people on these boards).
Lekko @ Aug 24th 2006 9:12PM
too late, you all already flew off the handle.
The reason this is important is because for people that own both a 360 and a PS3, which version will you buy? Will you buy it on the 360, or on the PS3 which will have a few more graphical tweaks? It worked for xbox last generation. Which system did you buy Tony Hawk or NFSU for? What made you choose that? Because, the games cost the same, but you get more out of one system than another. That's the reason this is big news, all those cross-platform ports will end up looking better on PS3 (supposedly).
Also, PS3 online should be free, so if it actually works (IF!), than that's another plus for sony.
Deric Lee @ Aug 24th 2006 9:26PM
Duh guys, he's holding the racket that way because the PS3 version has "Real Time Racket Change"!!
nick @ Aug 24th 2006 9:27PM
Uh, I've played and watched tennis, and I agree, the racket looks like it's on a whole different plane than Andy Roddick. But that's just my opinion.
Knoxximus @ Aug 24th 2006 9:33PM
That's not Roddick....it's an alien.
Ethan @ Aug 24th 2006 9:34PM
nick, obviously you are not a serious enough player to know how to hit a topspin serve. your arm naturally ends up that way after hitting one. proof, check the links below for andys actual serve, looks the same, doesnt it?
