Joystiq's own Chris G. sweats it out at the PAX new media panel
E3 was a hot topic of debate -- even Major Nelson called it a mystery for Microsoft -- and all the panelists were unsure about the methods of coverage that will be available to them next year. An audience member mentioned that the Consumer Electronics Association (producers of that little Vegas show known as CES) are considering filling the gap, as we mentioned earlier this month, but it was still clear that future gaming shows are quite the mystery other than this weekend's obvious hit: PAX.
We hope you can forgive this bit of utter meta vanity -- we'll now return you to your regularly scheduled programming -- but first, Chris would like to thank his Mom and his insatiable hunger for brains for making all of this possible. Oh, and if you'd like to hear the full discussion, Major Nelson should be posting it as a podcast soon, in true new media fashion.

Whoever just writes "first" should get negative stars.
vc @ Aug 27th 2006 6:43PM
Melo: I agree. If I catch someone doing that, I usually dole out a negative star.
hohoho @ Aug 27th 2006 7:02PM
possible conflict of interest from majornelson? common sense dictates you don't appoint oilmen to be your environmental protection officer. oh wait.... hmmm...
Demi Adejuyigbe @ Aug 27th 2006 7:27PM
How do you give or remove stars?
Superdotman @ Aug 27th 2006 7:44PM
Why is the Read link still the Read link when it links to (in this case, future) audio?
*Navi memories*
Oh yeah. Carry on, then.
#4 Demi Adejuyigbe: This post sums it up pretty excellently.

yeah, i agree with hohoho. i think that MS' recent partnering up with the blogosphere and suckering up to journalists at every turn just reaks of them being up to something. maybe i just dont trust them still. not a bad idea though, all the companies should do the same. but for some reason i dont trust those MS guys.
OT: lol, i think melophonist just got over on everyone.

Is that a pirate in the center of that photo?

For what it's worth, though I read both daily I like Joystiq a lot better than Kotaku. Kotaku seems a little more self absorbed. The whole "invite only" comments thing really irks me, especially when they give away prizes to commentators. They take this whole thing way too seriously sometimes.
You really can't take yourself too seriously when you're blogging about little cartoon Italian plumbers who eat shrooms.
In fact I think I like most of the Weblogs Network blogs better than their Gawker Media counterparts. I just wish you guys had a comic book blog.
GrlGmr @ Aug 28th 2006 2:12AM
I went to the media panel, and for the record, the Kotaku guy said that he hated the comment system there. He said that he had begged the powers that be there for a comment system, and they had implemented one that was "worse than having no comment system at all". Here's a pic that I took from the audience of the panel members, using a much better camera than the one I used the day before at the trivia contest.

@ Rooster,
Yes, I do believe so. In fact I think the fellow goes under the pirate name "Bearded Slick Brown". He's somewhat famous for always messing up yacht pillaging by spilling blood, making matters a lot worse most of the time. Another fact about Brown is that he only ventures out to 4 of the seven seas, due to the fact that he believes 4 is a holy number. Best explanation as to why though has been that when he was four he met the pirate that inspired him. Ah, and before I forgot. He suffers severely from sea sickness, making long voyages impossible.
If you’d like to learn more about Brown, or any other pirate for that matter, be sure to check out www.pirateslifeforme.com

slybri - it's not the least bit difficult to get a comment invite on Kotaku. If you just send one or two decent items to them (they don't have to be huge news stories...look at some of the stuff they put up), you'll get an invite. Not to mention they have done days-long open comment sign-up days in the past. The system they have there now is nice, it keeps the idiots to a minimum.
"They take this whole thing way too seriously sometimes." No, if anything they don't take it seriously enough.
"yeah, i agree with hohoho. i think that MS' recent partnering up with the blogosphere and suckering up to journalists at every turn just reaks of them being up to something."
They're not "up to something," they're just trying to get a leg up on the hardcore audience. Nothing wrong with that, but you'd be foolish not to take everything said on a MS blog with a pound of salt, especially Major Nelson's. That said, it's sad that someone like Allard or Hryb can't say something positive about their console or something negative about their competitor without someone screaming about it just being the company line. I'm not really "allied" with one of the big 3, but I sometimes agree with what they say.
jc @ Aug 28th 2006 9:24AM
Congrats Chris, hope you had a blast.
Nice to see you back vc...
Matt @ Aug 28th 2006 12:20PM
Is it just me, or does the Kotaku guy have sexy hair?
Seriously though, I'm glad they're focusing on something intelligent. That makes me giggle.
jabbertrack @ Aug 28th 2006 1:06PM
I listened to this last night and it's only made more more of a blog fan. Especially Joystiq even if the comments section does get screwed up with garbabe now and then.
I think you guys really ARE 'new media' and had better be taken seriously. The fact that MS is 'getting it' more and more has helped stem the tide of the blog wrath which is a huge force to be reckoned with.
Your "sony posts write themselves" concept had me saying "OMG EXACTLY". It's not that Sony sucks, or the PS3 is going to suck... it's just that Sony doesn't understand this media format yet. They don't seem to understand that unless you run damage control in a blog media friendly way you're going to come off as retarded.
Magazines are a thing of the past. How do I know? I get 5 different gaming mags and yet I don't pay for a single subscription... they are giving these things away. The articles are bloated and full of PR bullshit and I have been screaming for years for honest to goodness real writing and it seems I can only find that online.
If anything is wrong with Blog media I think it's that there ISN'T ENOUGH opinion.
Maybe you're intentionally catering to the short attention span, or guarding yourself from the ridicule of fanboys, but I say go forth and write. I need opinions people!
anyway thanks Joystiq for taking this whole thing seriously... as well as the rest of the panel... I am fans of theirs as well
Charli3 @ Aug 28th 2006 3:50PM
If you looking for brains why the hell are you sittin' next to Brian Crecente, huh, C. Grant?! Be sure not to get any hair gel on you...
I like Joystiq and Kotaku, I visit both sites daily but I prefer Joystiq because I enjoy being able to comment on topics of discussion.

Forget the article... who is that hot babe on the right??
