The final Omegathon challenge was ... [update 1]

Tetris! But not just any version of Tetris. They chose the illegal, unauthorized Tengen version, the only NES variant with 2 player support. The winning Omeganaut, LeRoy, bested his challenger in a best out of three before claiming his prize: a tricked-out Scion. PAX loyalists may recognize LeRoy from last year's competition where he lost by a single point in Combat. How does that saying go? Try, try again ...
As promised, we'll deliver a Joystiq t-shirt to the first person who accurately guessed the challenge's secret identity. So, the prize goes to Protoster who wrote "I'll go with tetris" as comment 13. Congrats LeRoy, congrats Protoster. We're going home, as usual, empty handed (swag bag excluded, of course).
[Note: I wrote this post live from the event, but it was apparently stuck in post-limbo. We'll be running some additional content from PAX throughout the week, including videos, interviews, and giveaways.]
[Update: Clarified inclusion of Tengen's Tetris; corrected last year's final challenge. Thanks, existonfile & Covarr.]

Actually last years final round was Combat, not Pong. Still an awesome match though.

Winning a tricked out Scion car for besting your opponents in "Tetris"? Sounds good to me.

I love Joystiq's coverage of PAX. That is all.
Covarr @ Aug 29th 2006 3:17PM
The Tengen version is the only Tetris game available for the NES with multiplayer. The authorized one is 1P only.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it.

I've seen so many links to Joystiq lately, I'm going to have to be looking into you guys daily now. Keep up the coverage!

Sweet!!! how do I claim my prise?
Deacon @ Aug 29th 2006 4:45PM
LeRoy Jenkins?
Dracula Jones @ Aug 29th 2006 3:56PM
I see they went with the top loading NES. Otherwise, the final Omegathon challenge would have been "Who can can get Tetris to boot first on the original NES?"
BPM? @ Aug 29th 2006 4:00PM
Actually, Dracula Jones, that doesn't look like the NES Model 2, either. Looks to be a "Famiclone" to me. :D

It's a NEX with wireless controllers.

I have the tengen version of tertis. That game was amazing! I love the co-op 2 player mode, where both players try to clear teh same well.
lownin @ Aug 29th 2006 5:03PM
I don't recal what kind of beanbags they are but I heard people talking about them while I was there. I did try them out and they where VERY comfy.
Some one mentioned they where very expensive though =/ boarding on rediculous. I didn't catch any numbers.
deft @ Aug 29th 2006 4:50PM
damn, I knew I should've gone with tetris...
oh well.
ascii42 @ Aug 29th 2006 5:55PM
Tengen Tetris is awesome, but I still like to rep Nintendo Tetris as well.
AssemblyLineHuman @ Aug 29th 2006 5:58PM
Would they, by any chance, be fatboys?

they could also be lovesacks, dont feel like looking up a website right now but there is a store in mayfair mall in Milwaukee WI. I am sure they have other stores and maybe sell online. I sat in one and I fell asleep quite quickly.
obo @ Aug 29th 2006 7:38PM
They were Sumo bean bags. They sponsor PA, look for the ads, or sumolounge.com.
Davertron blew ass. LeRoy was decent, but he won by Davertron killing himself twice. It was uncomfortable to watch - LeRoy didn't make it past, what, 22 lines? He didn't have to, because Davertron was pile the stack with 3 lines.
It was also lame that the GH round was on Medium difficulty, but eh.
sinea @ Aug 29th 2006 10:24PM
Play some video games, win a car. Design a high quality commercial, get a notebook. I guess it's up to the sponsors...

Back in 93, I wanted that game so bad...
But where was a 13 year old going to get the $250 price?

"Hey, does anyone know what kinda bean bags they had on hand there? anyone try them out? I am looking for some kick ass bean bags and those look class"
That would be a comment from someone who works for/is paid by Sumo! http://www.sumolounge.com/
In "the biz" we call such a person a "shill" or "plant" http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/01/25 (read more from the news posts that day and the next few days after for more info)
Of course, if those bean bags came with the hot blonde girl from their site, I'd buy them by the dozen. I would wreck that chick.
Andrew Stormont @ Aug 30th 2006 4:31PM
Thats not the only version of tetris that has 2 player!
I had a nes that I sold on ebay, and my copy of tetris i sold with it had 2 player. And it was a nintendo version not kengen!
Please dont tell me thats rare :(
I only sold it for £30
Johan Krger-Haglert @ Aug 31st 2006 1:30AM
"the only NES variant with 2 player support."
I bought some kind of pirate/third party cartridge with Tetris for my NES and it has 2 player support, and a russian theme, don't know if it's that one, there was some guys dancing I think but maybe it's the ones in the middle?
