We tried to include as many user submissions as possible, and sorry if we overlooked yours (it's not lack of quality, but negligence on our part). Penny Arcade'sself-flagellating comic notwithstanding (we saw them drawing it), here are our picks for best gaming webcomic this week. Be sure to vote for your favorite!
VGCats wasn't very good in my opinion. At least not in comparison to their other issues/the much better joke in N-Europe.
Methinks people are swayed by the artwork, cute expressions and Zelda context, because the joke wasn't really very funny.
VGC is my favourite game-related webcomic by far overall, but recent weeks and better competition steals my vote. Now, like so many others before me, I offer on my worthless opinion that no one else cares about... I should go finish that book and get off the internet. >_
"I REALLY wish the N-Europe comic wasn't a perfect recreation of the mentality of the industry right now. >:["
1up_clock, you probably won't be surprised that this was indeed cowritten with someone who works in the industry based on past experiences (and perhaps some current). Only if I'd used all his ideas, the comic could have been about 3 times longer....
Helper?, there's also Adblock Plus. I find it much nicer than Adblock. :)
VG Cats... It got me thinking. Why DOESN'T the Great Deku Tree burn down when you burn webs!? It was kinda funny, but not winner material.
I think... I pick N-Europe this week. Sadly true, sadly funny.
One negative point for F@NB0Y$ for missing the memo that that the Xbox team aren't TRYING to emulate the crap games, but that they just happen to work as they emulate more and more of the Xbox's features into 360.
I don't get it, Machall was by far the best, easily surpassing VGCats. Someone explain to me how accidently burning down the doku(?) tree in any compares to the horrendously offensive "Homosexual Agenda"? But it's coming in fourth. Oh well...
Machall was alright, but as for the others I've spent a bunch of time playing Guitar Hero so was really looking forward to seeing some good funnies on those.
As it happens, we have a very drawn out comic entirely for the mediocre one liner at the end, and another that I don't think I understood, and if I did understand it, wasn't very funny.
=/
Yeah, the internet needs more good Guitar Hero comics.
4 of those are above the bar today, specificly Mac hall, VGcats, N-europe, and Fanboys online. Of course, the reason I mention fanboys is because I own and am a pretty big fan of two of the games in the last panel (Oddword: Stranger's Wrath, Psychonauts) and the punchline is good. As much as I want to vote for the other three, I've got to give the vote to N-europe. it's overall just a great joke. (although VGcats is a close second, making mac hall 3rd and Fanboys 4th in my book)
I really liked the gamer palz one, just goes to show you don't need mad drawing skillz to do a humorous cartoon =) (though I find the stick figures quite cool xD)
I hope you don't mean my comic, because mine doesn't take just five minutes to draw.
Besides, if your judging comics solely by art, leave. Art is only half of the equation when it comes to comics, or less, when it comes to things like Pearls Before Swine.
And another point, I have a few reasons for my style to look the way it does. One being that I wanted it to be unique, another is that it's appealing to me and other people. Also, I wanted something simplistic so it would be easy to do considering my comic is updated DAILY.
"1. Manga-ish"
Okay, I whole-heartedly agree there. TOO many "artists" use the style. Probably to cover up the fact that they can't make anything unique of their own.
If you can't take critisim then you leave b/c "Game Boyz" DOES like it took 5 minutes (or less) to draw.
As for your recent strip (about the HDMI cable)...you are as bad as Joystiq in having a hissy fit about Sony not packing in a cable that .05% of people will be able to use.
I never said I couldn't take criticism. And it actually takes around 45 minutes to pull together a comic. And usually 1-2 hours just to think of an idea.
Also, I do regular art, as well. I don't limit my abilities to stick figures. If you want I could post some things.
By the way, I wasn't having a hissy fit in that comic. I don't care either way, because I'm not even getting a PS3. XD

Mac Hall and VG Cats both came close to being number 1, I'll have to decide which is better later.
Eggman @ Sep 2nd 2006 1:31PM
Haha still laughing at n-europe's (awesome idea's).
KingOfGods @ Sep 2nd 2006 1:41PM
Haha.....Dueling Analogs hit the nail right on the head.
Jay @ Sep 2nd 2006 1:43PM
Usually with these Webcomic Wrapups, there's only one or two good examples, but this time, nearly all of them were pretty good.
Chris Jeffery @ Sep 2nd 2006 2:05PM
Fanboys was awesome. Love the CINO panel.
LegendarySyko @ Sep 2nd 2006 4:32PM
VgCats for me!
Neoxkc @ Sep 2nd 2006 2:24PM
Thanks for putting my comic on the wrapup guys! I was very excited to see that today! YAY!
Ninegauger @ Sep 2nd 2006 2:27PM
Ha... letter from the publisher, you're killing me.
Kai @ Sep 2nd 2006 7:33PM
VG Cats all the way!! All of these were funny, but VG Cats was by far the best.
Neoxkc @ Sep 2nd 2006 2:46PM
@Ninegauger
Yeah, I come to Joystiq everyday, so I couldn't help it. I got very excited.
T-Bag @ Sep 2nd 2006 2:50PM
Is the n-europe comic based on the actual letter EA sent to Criterion for the next Burnout?
Anyways, VGCats gets my vote.
GSI @ Sep 2nd 2006 3:24PM
VGcats FTW!
The N-Europe one was pretty fun and what's scary is that there are people who REALLY think that way...and some of them post on Joystiq.
Ultimatallica @ Sep 2nd 2006 3:32PM
Christ Gamer Boys has the shittiest comics.....

And since VG Cats is an option everyone has seen, everyone voted for it.
I went Fanboys. "Catwoman is a furry" and the last panel were great.
PapaChabre @ Sep 3rd 2006 10:09AM
Ahh. VGCats. Exuberance is your name.
Johny @ Sep 2nd 2006 7:34PM
Is it just me or does that stupid ad on the jostiq front page with the joke of the day laughing face piss you off?
Helper? @ Sep 2nd 2006 7:50PM
Lol Johny,
I had to switch rendering engines to see the ad.
Ever heard of firefox?. Try these extensions: Adblock and Adblock filterset.G Updater.

I definitely have to give it to Mac-Hall, though VG-cats and N-Europe came very close.

David @ Sep 3rd 2006 1:48AM
Totally agree #17. gamer Pals was easily the best joke, VG cats isn't bed, by no means a classic.

Game webcomics have only one of three art styles:
1. Manga-ish
2. Penny Arcade (at some point in its evolution)
3. Took five minutes to draw.

Where does Dragon Tails fit into your insightful little equation then?
Nice try at flaming the people who draw "manga-ish", but it seems no-one took the bait. Aww, poor you.
