I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. He was an incredible, constant presence in our society, and when I saw this on the news the world began to seem a little less bright. RIP, Steve.

wtf Marc? Twain wasn't writing about evil. He was writing that humans prove unloyal when we have wealth and/or power.

Back to Steve Irwin, though, DeadPlasmaCell (#7) wrote that he pulled out the barb. Do we get to watch that in the show's final episode?

wages of sin,

If everyone thought like you and your fellow neocons do, we'd be nuking everyone who gave us a look we didn't like. People can and do feel bad for people dieing who they do not know. And btw, you're a hypocrite...

This in one post
"That being said, I don't feal any remorse"

Then this in the next
"It amazes me that some of you who claim to love the world, nature, animals and all of that, but could careless about your fellow man. Caring about a damn monkey over a human being."

So do you or don't you care about your fellow man? huh wages of sin?

A couple points:

1) he was not filming worlds deadliest, he was filming a documenatry about coral reefs for children (with his daughter in mind) on down time from worlds deadliest.

2) he in no way agrivated the sting ray. He happened to swim over it and startled it. It was burried in the sand and he probably didn't even know it was there.

3) he doesnt "wrestle" crocs. Whenever he was diving in a river and "wrestling" a croc, it was to take it out of a dangerous situation (i.e. a shrinking environemnt over run by people) and deliver it to a sanctuary.

4) he isnt a zoologist who got lucky and opened a zoo. His father ran that zoo since he was a child and tought him from the time he was very young all about animals, and to respect and care for them.

Steve loved every animal on this earth (humans too), and would put there lives ahead of his own without a second thought, he risked his life every day to help make people understand how wonderfull animals are so that they woudl want to help protect them. Everything he did was to aid in the protection of animals and the environment. Proceeds from his show, movie, merchandise, game etc... always went to charities. Now I'm sure he wasnt living in a shack but he certainly wasnt taking the millions of dollars he made and buying hummers with gold rims (though he is one of the few celebrities that could probably justify owning one).

People are not "faux" morning, they are genuinly upset. There a few trully good and wonderfull things/people in this world and one of the best known just left us. I had never really thought about it till it happened but Steve's passing hit me suprisngly hard. If your so enbittered by the world that you can't understand why people would be sad that a good man died then you should probably seek profesional help. You may not care as much as some of us do, but that doesn't mean you need to belittle the out pouring of emotion this has caused.

Steve, you where trully one of the good ones and you will be missed.

Sin... you are a MORON.

People feel a closeness to animals over man, because most animals are absolutely helpless to enviromental destruction and the careless behavior of humans. Most people who care about the animal kingdom.. ALSO care about Human Beings. Keep your opinions to yourself you clown, instead of making insensitive comments about people having "false mourning." Most of the people here grew up watching Steve Irwin, and those of us who share his interests felt even closer to him. Not to mention that from what I have heard/read.. he was completely unaffected by his fame... never changed who he was. He was as genuine as they come.

Cameraman Ben Cropp, who was also on the reef when Mr Irwin was killed on Monday, spoke to a member of the production crew who had seen the footage of the incident.

"He was up in the shallow water, probably 1.5m to 2m deep, following a bull ray which was about a metre across the body - probably weighing about 100kg, and it had quite a large spine," Mr Cropp told The Australian newspaper.

"It stopped and went into a defensive mode and swung its tail with the spike. It probably felt threatened because Steve was alongside and there was the cameraman ahead, and it felt there was danger and it baulked."

AS per: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5314918.stm

Don't kid yourself, he knew it was there and it was his ignorance killed him.

And that doesn't mean he wasn't a great guy that did great things. I'm sure most would say that he's done more good than the Pope.

The fact is, if I walked into a bear's den with a camera crew, even with the best of *intentions* (which may include educating the public about bears), if I got close enough to the bear, it would have my scalp, its no different.

He taught me alot of things on his program Anyone who says anything mean or negative needs to get a backbone. Any coward can strike after a person is gone and can't defend himself. Steve was a kind man and loved all animals. He and his family will always be in my prayers.

to 63) NO "rockin_robbie" No. It would not be the same. You're some internet fool... Steve Irwin was a trained herpatologist. Big freakin difference.

I love how people can be so god damn insensitive.. it's really dishearteneing to read it actually.

Steve Irwin was a lover of animals and life, and as I said once or twice throught these posts.. if you dont have anything nice to say about someones DEATH... then just keep it to yourself.

It wasn't "ignorance" that killed steve.. it was a FREAK accident. There have only been a few documented cases of Stingray induced fatalities in recorded history.. so NO I wouldnt say ignorance played much of a part in this.

RIP Steve Irwin

I had to say the guy really buigged me on a personal level, but one can only respect the great devotion he displayed to the environment.
He dontated all the money his ventures raised to wildlife charities as I understand it... & apparently he is quoted as being disappointed if his death wasnt filmed.

Ignorance?? If that's the case, i'd suggest you stay away from water altogether you MORON!

If anything, Steve Irwin was trying to educate the ignorant. His bravery was unmatched and his dedication- unparallel. This may be trivial to some. But a person does not have to appreciate Mr.Irwin's work to respect his devotion to wildlife and education.

ejflex, I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm not being insensitive. As you can see from above I said "And that doesn't mean he wasn't a great guy that did great things. I'm sure most would say that he's done more good than the Pope."

****I loved the guy and I will miss him.**** Pull your claws out man.

The reason his death is so "one-in-a-million" is because most people don't get so close to a Bull ray, nor corner it (as the news report has stated). I'm sure they didn't INTEND to corner it, but THEY DID. Also, Steve should have known better than to keep his upper body so close to ray. He placed himself within reach of a sting ray, he was close, his upper body was close. I would have thought his education (as a trained herpatologist) would have told him to avoid this kind of situation (and THATS why its so rare). Its rare because they sting your feet because no one swims so close to a sting ray.

Bull rays sting out of fear, then swim away from humans, he was too close (a trained herpatologist will tell you).

So far, nothing has said the ray was hidden, in fact, everything I've read to date states they were filming THAT ray. It even says the thing is 10 feet long, nearly 100kgs. Thats a big object to miss in 2 meters of water.

He wwent out of his way to put himself in a one-in-a-million risk to get a one-in-a-million shot.

I live here in Australia. He wasnt stung through the heart, he was stung through the chest near to his heart and the poison from the stingray caused an allergic reaction close to his heart that killed him. Now i am waiting for a cartoonist to show a stingray being followed by camera's saying:

'Ohhh Crikey, this here is the famous Steve Irwin, the croc hunter. He's a tough little trooper, with nerves of steel. What i'm gonna do, is float silently backwards towards him so he can't see me. Then when i get close, i'll STING him straight into his chest".

It would be classic. I feel sorry for the poor guy, at the very least he should have been eaten by a croc. Experts here are saying the chances of him dying like he did are like a million to 1. He was a great ambassador for australia (even tho none of us really say Crikey, or even tackle crocs on a daily basis) and the Americans loved him. He'll be missed.

This is so sad. I can safely say his shows were about all i'd be remotely interested in watching when it came to animal life and the environment. To those claiming he was flamboyant, arrogant or w/e... the man probably did more about educating the world about wild life than most others. Would you watch an ordinary boring documentary about wild life? They seem to be running almost 24/7 but does many even watch? The man did the world a great service by taking the risks he did b/c otherwise, lets be honest, no one would've watched. TV shows NEED to be able to keep our interest for topics that we normally wouldn't care about, Steve's show could have u on the edge of ur seat without any explosions or special effects. But then he wasn't taking risks for the sake of taking risks either, his shows were always about education and NEVER deviated from that throughout his life. I'm probably a lot more educated about animals because of his show then I would've been otherwise. Not to mention he ALWAYS cared for and handled the animals in a very careful manner.

He was a good man, passionate about his work and left an impression on the world few can come close to. To those claiming that most of the comments here are "fake mourning"... ur dead wrong. A lot of us grew up watching his shows which were (again) a breath of fresh air from the usual crap documentary u see on tv. He will be missed a lot. RIP Steve.

I think people who get upset at 'faux' sadness that is being shown for Steves death have missed something. Probably very little of it is false at all. A lot of my 'good' highschool days (see: no work, getting to watch videos all day) were watching Steve chase some animal around or run up a tree or poke at something until it got angry.

He defied death when he did it. He didnt defy death because he beleived he was defying death, either, he felt perfectly save in his environment.

And I think thats probably the most touching bit of this all. It would have been one thing if Steve had gotten killed by a croc, I think I would have been less sad. Its like, well Steve, you earned that one, and you died doing what you like doing. But to get killed by a stingray in a single hit while doing some footage for your daughter in your spare time?

The man had a love of life, and THATS why its sad. Im not ashamed to say I really do feel like one of the worlds heroes has died prematurely. And yes, I use the word hero. I looked up to Steve more than I looked up to any world leaders of the past few years, Ive never wanted to visit australia more, and my respect and knowledge of the world around me has grown signifigantly thanks to the interest in it that his antics gave to me.

For never having known him personally, he gave me more than most people Ive known in my lifetime. F*ck you who say hes just a TV personality. That was probably one of the most 'real' people unabashedly giving back to everyone else. My heart is heavy and my eyes tear up even thinking about it right now.

It was just a crappy, unexpected way to die. I think there would have been a lot less commotion and sadness if he had lived to be an old man and died in his sleep (however, I can see there having been quite a bit of surprise if he HAD managed to make it to old age).

This is a great post.

I never saw this coming.. The first time I saw the news was on digg.com. They were talking about how "the news about steve irwin had au. servers completely overloaded." So I was like "uhmmm what news?" Then I went to the "entertainment" section on digg.. Then, right there. Top article, big letters.. I will never forget, "THE Crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead." My heart froze.. I just, sat there, staring for a goo 3 minutes.. I just, could believe it.. This man that we all had immortalized as being invincable.. Dead? He was America's REAL life hero.. He could survive things normal people would never be able to do. Then.. Gone? Just like that?

I ended up clicking on the link which linked me to news.com.au, which described in detail all of the events that occurred. I re-read that atleast 3 times. It was like, something you never thought would happen.. And then all of the sudden, instantly, he was dead.. gone.

I think that we have lost one of the best people in history. Now some people may think that that is a bit extreme.. But think about it. The other people that we considered as heros.. They were all extremely passionate about the field in which they were a part of. I can not think of anyone else so passionate about animals. But not just simply animals, not just nature, but about life.

Well, I have to end this now or it will never stop.. Ha ha. Anyway, Rest in Peace Steve. You have truly earned it.

I curse that stingray for killing such a great man and I will curse it for the rest of my life. He did alot of great things. His movies where great but most of all he was great.I think the media should give the family a break, I mean its on every channel, every minute. How do you think the family would feel? Don't you think they have been through enough already? Just think about it. Wouldn't you like them to stop if it was your dad / husband / son or brother.

I am writing this tribute on behalf of my wife Sofia who was a huge fan of Steve's. As a Native American her philosiphy of being a good steward to the planet earth and it's creatures was closely aligned with Steve,s everyday activities and the message he was trying to project to public at large. Although his causes launched him into a world wide celebrity, let us not forget that essentially he was a TEACHER and all that term implies. He was the best at what he did and we were all his students to some degree. His passion for wildlife and conservation issues was contagious. We want to thank him for sharing his life as we glimpsed into his world from time to time via his TV specials. It was incredible to watch how he incorporated everyone: family, friends, employees into his efforts to preserve and teach about wildlife issues. You could tell he made everyone involved feel that they had an important and relevent role. What a really special person. His life and actions speaks for itself. What more can one say?

The following is a message from my wife to Steve's dad:

We know you lost your best mate and I feel the same as well. I really loved your son for who he was and what he stood for. I know not as much as you do naturally. I wish I could be there to kiss Steve good-bye. However you will have to do it for me. Kiss Terry and the kids for me as well. Lastly thank you for having such a beautiful person for a son and thanks for sharing him with the rest of us.

Love and Respect
Sofia

HERE IS WHAT MADE STEVE IRWIN SO HYPED!!!!

He was A.D.H.D. really bad! That is why he was so crazed and nuts... acting like a little kid! He had ADHV ... Mental disorder can be hidden by his parents like mine! I am alot like Steve Irwin and my parents might have hid the disorder and chalked it up to regular hyper imagination.... But Steve Irwin exhibited A.D.H.D. things especially when it came to his death! My cousin has it bad and is always acting like Steve Irwin. I act like him a lot especially when I'm doing what I love! HE HAD THAT DISORDER! It worked to his advantage!!!!! WHO WOULD AGREE! Come on people, this guy was way out of control but for some reason could use it to his advantage!
