I'm more upset by all the people who continue to use their ultra annoying term "fanboy".

Yea people are confusing 'successful' with 'good'. The cube wasn't successful but look at Metroid Prime and the upcoming Twilight Princess. wasn't Prime rated the best game this gen?
Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Mario 64 were on an unsuccessful console but look how groundbreaking they were.

I'm no fan of the PS3 and I can say now that I will not be buying one, but that won't stop it having good games. In this day and age the popular games will probably be ported anyways.

Here's a clip from the BBC News that I thought was great - loved it when the fanboy got owned by the news that it'd been delayed on camera:

Love his reasons for waiting though - "More games, better games, better graphics, more online play - hopefully."

Sony will be fine. Their games will be good at first, excellent in 6 months after release. Production will ramp up. Things are doing fine.

What the Joystiq and blog community doesn't understand is that they live in a bubble. Most people don't know or care about the exact timing of when the PS3 comes out. They care about getting HD quality movies and unique games you can't find on a PC *cough* XBOX 360. Wii? I don't know, but I just think people who buy Nintendo are in a different demographic.

What difference does it really make if you get it in Novemember or December? Not much. As for Europe, I feel their pain. However, I think what's MORE telling is the distribution of launch-day systems at a 4-to-1 ratio in the US versus Japan. That means Sony knows how important a holiday showing is in the US, which is where it's easiest to ship and sell consumer electronics than Europe. Sad but true.

So, while this may not be awesome news, I don't think it will amount to a hill of beans outside of the fervent blog community that we all love and endear. Let's face it-- we have a lot more emotionally invested in this than normal people should.

This real story is what is happening behind the scenes. Why all the problems?

Clearly, Blu-Ray shipped too early. There's issues with the first player from Samsung which still haven't been addressed yet. And it's a sign when Sony hasn't released their own stand alone player yet.

And because everything revolves around Blu-Ray it's affecting Sony.

It was mentioned earlier that had Sony not opted to use Blu-Ray in the PS3, they could have launched already. I believe had they launched without Blu-Ray, Sony would certainly continue it's current dominance. With Blu-Ray, it's now a gamble whether or not they'll hold onto their market share.

Poor Sony. At this point in time, it's not looking rosy. They really need to pull out something absolutely amazing between now and launch.

The REAL story here is how today's news impacts Sony's Master Plan of getting Blu-Ray drives into everyone's homes. The PS3 was supposed to be the big Trojan Horse, remember? Now with a shortage of the device that was supposed to the first high-selling Blu-Ray player in the U.S. and Japan, and the delay everywhere else until after the holidays, Sony can't sell a large part of the world on this hot new technology until next holiday season. Meanwhile, Blu-Ray discs (which I've already seen at my local Circuit City) will be collecting dust.

600 bucks, being forced to buy packages, and the very real chance you wont be able to get one.

the 360 pissed me off with its "Shortages" so much so that I doubt I will ever buy one. But the fact it sounds like the PS3 shortages will be even worse.

If only we can get the Japanese RPG makers interested in making games for the wii and even the 360. Square, sony is a sinking ship go back to nintendo, they love you!

I've seen a lot of "Oh, I'm gonna buy one and sell it on Ebay!" comments...

I don't think you guys realize just how FEW units 400,000 is. The 360 launched with..what? A million? More? I can't find an exact number, but that's what I recall. Here in St. Louis, for example, we got 500 units, between all the stores, and most of those were at Best Buy. My game store saw 4, out of our 50 or so reservations. We were backed up until March.

Now, divide the number of units by at least half. Now, increase the demand, because, let's face it, the PS3's name carries a lot of weight. (At least, among people who haven't been reading their game news.)

It's going to be a retail apocalypse. Trying to get a PS3 is going to be like Mad Max looking for gas. Worse, even. I personally doubt you'll see any units outside the coast. And likely only the west coast, at that.

Have I broken up with Sony? Hell yes. This Ike Turner crap has to stop. Sony fanboys, please realize that Sony does not love you. If it did, it wouldn't keep hitting you. So quit defending it.

I saw a comment earlier to the tune of "people will still buy it, because of all the great launch titles". Like what? SingStar? Give me a break. The last time a console launched with a AAA title, I was still hooking up my systems with an RF adapter.

Sony is burying itself. I used to fall firmly in the Sony camp. I love JRPGs, and the DMC and MGS series. There were a lot of great games on the PS2. But the last year has seen me jump ship. Between my stupid UMD player they suckered me into, and all the crap about PS3, I'm now hoping the system tanks. Not because I'm spiteful. But because I want my favorite game makers to break exclusivity with Sony, and start moving to 360 or Wii.

My loyalty doesn't belong to Sony, or even MS or Nintendo. My loyalty goes to Square, Capcom, Kojima Studios, and the hadnful of other companies that don't push off proprietary media formats on me. They just make my GAMES.

Sony doesn't entertain me. They do. Let's all try to remember that before we get sucked up in brand loyalty.

Was on the edge about buying one but now it looks like Sony made the choice for me. I hope I'll be so entangled in a threesome with my 360 and (soon) Wii I will probably not even notice when the PS3 gets released.

On another note, this shortage is going to make for some interesting ebay auctions, the 360 broke $1000 on more than one occasion. Since the PS3 already practically costs that much I bet we'll see some go for over $1,300 to some rich kid. But at least the games will be fully stocked at the store.

"The ONLY reason why I even use my PS2 is for RPG/SRPG's. I can't get enough of the Disgaea's, SMT:DDS, and even playing FFVII and other PS1 greats like Vagrant Story. It is like the best RPG system. Ever."

Sony has forgotten that. They've got their 2nd party developers focused on making shooters to wean people off the XBox. There are far more PS3 shooters than RPGs in the works. Most of the games they are planning to show at Tokyo Game Show are American-style shooters and driving games. Sony is completely ignoring their traditional fanbase, such as RPG fans like yourself.

The entire PR campaign since E3 2005 has been nothing but lies. Two HDMI outputs? Lies. 8 Wireless controllers? Lies. 1080P 120fps? Lies. Global launch? Lies.

Does it matter? Hardly. The Sony fan-army is massive beyond count. Sure they'll lose some hardcore fans... oh, and the casual fans too when they find out how much it's going to cost... but they're still going to sell out, and they're still going to be a powerful force in the industry.

As a 360 fan, I need Sony to stay alive. I need them to keep pushing Microsoft because MS has a terrible habbit of giving up when the going is good (IE6, Windows XP). Without Sony there to push MS to do better, the results could be disasterous.

You're a bunch of lying ******** Sony, and I don't like you. But you're still important to the industry.

I feel sorry for Sony fans who actually CAN jump over to 360, people who care about technical specs and release delays and initial pricing. I don't consider myself a Sony FAN as much as someone who has nowhere else to go; I like RPGs (JRPGs mostly, but I'm not adverse to a well-made ARPG), and I learned my lesson from the original Xbox. I bought one based on the promise of a MMORPG made by the creators of Dark Cloud, and that game never materialized. I played a grand total of SEVEN games on my Xbox, four of them rented. Very clearly it was not a system designed FOR me. If it turns out that 360 has a more robust RPG lineup, then I can buy it after the price drop, when there are some actual GOOD GAMES out. One thing I do know is that eventually a new Shin Megami Tensei game will come out for PS3, and buying the entire console will be worth it to play that game alone.

#100 & 109:

I don't see it affecting the master plan at all. By the end of the year, instead of 4 million, there'll be somewhere between 1 and 2 million BD players in the market. Versus, what, less than 100,000 HD-DVD players? Or do you actually expect the Xbox crowd - the same ones that seem to unanimously scoff at HD movies altogether - to go out and buy en masse Microsoft's little add-on afterthought? Take another guess which HD movies are gonna be gathering dust...

@50: Well said.

We should be questioning developer loyalty more than consuer loyalty. The developers will make a larger impact in the long run.

Brand loyalty is for dopes. You reward companies for doing things right. I passed on the XBox, since it was rife with issues throughout its production. I'm going to get a 360 as soon as the new, cooler CPUs are available. That system is actually interesting.

I never buy a system at launch, anyway, since I want to wait for more and better games to become available. The only exception to my 10+ console collection was the original Playstation, since it had some great games at launch.

Besides, at this price point, do you really think people are going to buy them by the million?

#18 - "Who cares? I still can play Guitar Hero's and 360 owners not."

That won't be true for long. What's left when Guitar Hero shows up on the 360? Metal Gear, God of War, and Final Fantasy? That's not enough to justify a $600 system purchase, sorry.

A year ago I wouid have said: Screw the 360! I call it the Dreamcast 2! That console is crap! I want me some Wii action and a PS3... now that's some real gaming right there!

Now that a year has passed and all the cards are on the table, I own a 360 and am enjoying it thouroughly and Sony and their, "We're Sony! You'll buy what we tell you!" attitude has me completely disinterested in the PS3. They make big boasts and show off fake trailers and all the time the fanboys shriek with delight at the overpriced and undelivered system that they THINK will rule the world. I have news for you, the PS3 might not fail, it might have a decent amount of consoles in homes by this time next year, but the 360 and the Wii will both have it beat. If there is anything that I have learned after following gaming for so long, It's that the games follow the numbers. Sony may have had the upper hand for the last couple of generations, but developers will think twice about committing the enormous amount of resources it will take to make a title for the PS3 when Sony has the smallest install base.

Read me, don't RUSH out to buy a 360 just because PS3 was delayed! 360 is a piece of shit, I have one and I had never been unsatisfied with a console until I got it. It doesn't work well, and the only must have game for before 2007 will be Gears of War. Oh, and when it comes out, PS3 will cheaper or equal in price if you include the costs of Xbox LIVE, let alone the fact that you are getting more with PS3.

Buy a Wii. Not "Wii60", just Wii. Or Hell, WiiS2.

And by the way, if you have a PS2, there are still plenty of awesome games coming for PS2 if you don't want a new console. Okami just came out, Yakuza is coming soon, Mortal Kombat Armageddon comes out in October, FFXII comes out in november, God hand comes out really soon too (before 2007), and God of War 2 is coming out early 2007 (before PS3 comes out in Europe).

#119: Three points:

First, I haven't seen any HD-DVD discs at stores, nor have I seen anyone attempt to market the format to customers (The reason why the 360's HD-DVD support is currently not mentioned). Wait until XMas and we'll have a better grasp on how many HD-0DVD sets are available and how many people will buy an HD-DVD-capable set. And I should note that there will be plenty of PS3 owners who will equally scoff at Blu-Ray.

Second, the point I wanted to make is that NO company, on either side of the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray schism, has as much riding on their chosen format as Sony does. Remember, Sony's going to sell the PS3 at an initial loss. If it turns out that Blu-Ray is the loser, PS3s become less valuable to people who aren't hardcore gamers, less PS3s are sold....you see where this is going.

Third, Sony's decision not to send the PS3 to Europe until after the holiday season means that HD-DVD will have an automatic headstart in those countries for the holiday season, assuming the merchandise (the players and the DVDs) is ready (I'll admit to not really doing any research on it).
