Devil May Cry 4 information leaked a tad early
Considering there is a countdown about to run out at the official Web site, we expected to get more information on the PlayStation 3's standout title Devil May Cry 4 relatively soon. But, thanks to the power of the Internet and Japanese magazines, we can get the goods just a wee bit earlier. According to a rough translation of Famitsu, this is what you're gonna get with DMC 4:- The game takes place after DMC 1, but before DMC 2.
- You play as a new lead character by the name of Nero.
- Nero has devilish right arm. He can draw enemies toward himself and then throw them.
- The combo system has as base the one from DMC3 and they are revising/reworking details according to the fans' comment-remarks.
- Nero's sword has a bar. The sword has some kind of a driving force in it. It's a new way/element to enjoy the sword handling.
- At the Tokyo Game Show there will be real-time footage.
It's nice to know there will be "real-time footage" at TGS, but how about some real-time gameplay on the show floor? That'd certainly be a nice way to extend the olive branch to disheartened Sony fans -- especially when you break the news to your Japanese base about getting the short end of the stick come launch day.
[Thanks, Gerard Flannory]

"PS3 only?! I thought this was coming to 360 :("
Sadly, all of those were rumors. Well, I hope the game looks close to the trailer that was released. Then that will help cheer up the sony fanboys a little bit (with all of this horrible news). Anyways, this game might be one fo the reason why I buy a PS3(in 3 years).
MartinG. @ Sep 6th 2006 7:41PM
Isn't Nero just Nelo Angelo? If so, he wouldn't be a new character.
dauthi @ Sep 6th 2006 7:47PM
Don't worry whiskers, it will. Capcom isn't stupid, well, except for the whole non-hd testing with Dead Rising. But hey, they're only human, which means they want money, which means they'll put it on the 360. Or Sony may take out another loan to buy exclusivity, but then as they said, game exclusivity means squat...
Phil @ Sep 6th 2006 7:59PM
First, Nero is not a new character, he is Dante's twin brother which has been in DMC1 and was also playable in DMC3 (possibly only in the director's cut released later, but whatever). Regardless he is not new:p
And second, DMC4 was on the list of playable games at the TGS for PS3, so it should be playable.
Michael @ Sep 6th 2006 8:00PM
At first I thought, "maybe 'footage' actually means gameplay"
But then I realized there's no way this japanese magazine could've been mistranslated at all.
Luckily Robert Summa kept me in check.

Chris @ Sep 6th 2006 8:10PM
1. dm4 as a playable demo has already been announced.
2. it's be announced that japan will get 1.2million of the 2 million by the end of 2006. not north america.
Cage @ Sep 6th 2006 8:17PM
LOL. Sony parties are trying to release ANY news they may have to give a positive light. Is anyone else picking up on this?
Ok...ok. Enough Sony bashing. I used to do it and now its getting old. We all really need to concentrate we do like. Any news on upcoming games for the 360? The 360 site really does a good job of staying positive and focusing on whats coming and how we benefit. I offer a truce to Sony fanboys...
Sike! (and yes I said sike) This is ridiculous! How the hell can Sony get away with all of this and even remotely have a chance of being the leading console! Consumers would need to be practically blind not to see this travesty! Down with Ken and down with Sony! I'll roll with Bill and his humanitarian efforts...
Cage @ Sep 6th 2006 8:19PM
And thanks Chris. By the way you put that (and type) I can tell that you're in the know. Your expertise alone should save Sony.
JJ @ Sep 6th 2006 8:20PM
ok... Cage this post has nothing to do with Sony per se... its about a new capcom game... why even bother with the Sony bashing? seriously.
Chris @ Sep 6th 2006 8:26PM
Dear Cage,
I can tell that you have an infintile penis by your above statemnt.
Sincerely,
Chris

So I read this, and ..
and..
My howls of disappointment with Capcom echoed inside my chest.. because the weight of the sadness was so great, that I just didn't have the power left in me to vocalize the epic level of heartfelt disgust I have for the Thinking Caps at Capcom.
Did they learn nothing from the COMPLETE SUCK of Devil May Cry 2? Was the awesome of DMC 3 just a fluke, and they have to go back to borking it up? Oh wait, CHAOS LEGION was so good too, right? Why Capcom, why do you refuse to understand the people who loved Devil May Cry?
Let's look at some elements, and how I see them:
Challenge:
NOT EVERYONE WANTS A GAME THAT HANDS THEM VICTORY ON A PLATE. Game Over means nothing anymore. The agony of defeat is counterpointed exactly by the exhultation of victory! If all that is required to defeat a game is persistance, you leave with a forgettable experience that never really roused you to begin with. We can ALL think of at least one game that left us "Meh" this way.. if we can even remember the name of it. I'll give you one: Chaos Legion. I'll give you another: Devil May cry 2. Solution? If we're capcom, let's re-release what was hailed as a triumphant return of what made Devil May Cry GOOD to begin with in DMC3, but make it easier.. I haven't been able to purchase DMC3 special edition for this specific reason. Allowing "Hard" ( What was once Normal difficulty in the initial release) mode to be accessible at the beginning would at least have assuaged this slap in the face.
Gamers are not one vast mass of people whose tastes can all be coerced in one direction at one time. Some gamers only allow themselves to get into a game that doesn't rouse them at all. Some gamers want to defeat the ooze boss for the first time after countless, agonizing defeats, send their controller flying to the floor and utter a primal scream of apes-at-the-monolith-like victory.
KNOW YOUR CHARACTER. Did ANYONE like broody quiet Non-Dante in DMC2? I'm going to say no. Fans of the DMC series tend not just to admire the challenging and exciting combat mechanics of the games ( well, of DMC 1 and DMC3 anyways) but the character within them: Dante. Brash, bold, loud, a friggin rock star who has the time of his life every time he breaks some damn walking puppet in half with a sword as big as he is. He's having a good time, and so is the player controlling him damnit. DMC 4 not starring Dante is about as great idea as.. what was the name of that completely forgettable female character in DMC 2?
Capcom, you frustrate me. With so few games appearing these days that reward player skill and not just player time investment, you just descend further into the shadowed lands where games rouse no emotional highs, and leave the player as a forgettable waste of time on the "previously played" shelf at the Gamestop.
Yes I come off as a frothing nerd when my small nerdly joys are dashed.
Cage @ Sep 6th 2006 8:33PM
Honestly JJ I was gonna leave it at stop the Sony bashing but couldnt pass it up. That will be my last, I repeat, last Sony bashing statement of 2006 (Unless Sony does something absolutely insanely stupid). Feel better now?
On topic, never was into DMC (too Japanese anime for my tastes - not a racist statement) however the shots look good.
djchoi @ Sep 6th 2006 8:44PM
I agree to Becky's comment totally.
Knoxximus @ Sep 6th 2006 8:44PM
So Nero=Virgil? I thought his twin brother was Virgil.
Justin Brogan @ Sep 6th 2006 8:49PM
Actually, Nero would be a new character. Vergil became Mundas' minion at the end of DMC3, and died as Nelo Angelo in the original Devil May Cry. Vergil despised using firearms as they are not "weapons of a warrior". This character is just the opposite. He carries his own Killer 7-ish Magnum, and will carry even more. Furthermore Vergil had the ability to use a Devil Trigger, thus becoming a full Demon for a certain ammount of time. Nero lacks that, instead having the Devil's Right Hand.
Kiwilord @ Sep 6th 2006 9:06PM
I can see why you would be confused about Nero being Nelo Angelo. They would both be pronounced the same in Japanese. It may be possible that this is a re-incarnation of Virgil, but that would be stretching it.
Becky -> DMC 2 was NOT handled by the same team as the first DMC. Capcom wanted a sequel, they got a sequel, lackluster though it may be. Capcom doesn't operate as one giant whole, they have specific teams working on different projects. So "Capcom" doesn't need to recognize it's characters, the teams responsible for each game need to be aware of their characters.
Now, Dante and Virgil are both known to be in DMC 4. We've all seen the pictures and sketches for both characters, as well as the 3-D renditions of Dante. Capcom recognizes that DMC is a popular franchise, so they want to make it more accesible. How many people want to play DMC 3 after hearing how hard it is? You don't make money on a niche title. Maybe you've forgotten that DMC has more than one difficulty setting? With the outspoken popularity of DMC 3 within the DMC community, I would highly doubt that DMC 4 is going to be some walk in the park. Don't bash something you haven't played yet you cretinous dog. it's not like changing the main character will make the game horrible (Metal Gear Solid 2 benifits from Raiden as the lead character, since the story could not be told through Snake, and if you don't know why, play the last couple cutscenes again).
alps @ Sep 6th 2006 9:10PM
"the sword will have a bar in it"
how am I going to get drunk from a video game?
Etheo @ Sep 6th 2006 10:04PM
Breaking News! Our new character also has a new ability: to gather enemies and burn them on Discs, then throw them at more enemies! Weeeeeee

Elgor @ Sep 6th 2006 10:23PM
DMC is my favourite game series ever, ahead of... Final Fantasy, Warcraft, Pro Evo, all the other games I've spent literally years of my life playing. DMC is my favourite.
DMC without Dante as the lead character... won't be my favourite game series anymore. Ugh ugh ugh. The factor that decides whether I buy a PS3 is whether or not DMC4 is any good.
Corey @ Sep 6th 2006 11:09PM
Apparently Capcom is short on character designers.
Zento @ Sep 6th 2006 11:27PM
Umm, from what I can tell of the scans, Nero seems to be another playable character, NOT the only playable character. You can see they mention Dante on the right side of the second scan and that many of the screenshots on that page are of Dante, not Nero. Furthermore, in the red box on scan 4, you can clearly see Dante's trademarked pistols Ebony and Ivory. You can tell because Nero's firearm/s appear to have the shape of revolvers and thus have a round barrel, while the two in the screenshot seem to box-like and similar to Dante's pistols. So all together, it appears as if they will be bringing back the 2 character gameplay from DMC2.
Rein @ Sep 7th 2006 2:30AM
I'm glad there is a new main character, because Dante in DMC3 was a total douche... By the end of the game, I was so sick and tired of Dante and his too-cool-for-school attitude that I wanted to kill myself. DMC3 is definitely my least favorite in the series, so hopefully DMC4 will be much, much better.
Martin @ Sep 7th 2006 8:02AM
Just to make it fair. Even though I do not believe anything I am going to say, but since the Sony fanboys constantly do this anytime some Wii footage shows.
------------------------------------------------------
The graphics look like crap!!! They are all grainy and dark, it looks like the original castlevania on Gameboy advance!!!!! There is no way I am getting that crap!!!
------------------------------------------------------
anyways, that would be great if they had actual demos or at least gameplay footage!!!!!!!
Matt @ Sep 7th 2006 2:36PM
So what, is this Ninja Gaiden now? Is this Shinobi? Are they doing the whole "SWORD FEEDS OFF YOUR SOUL" bit again? Maybe they're trying to go for the "Soul Calibur" feel. This is ridiculous...
James Slater @ Sep 9th 2006 1:47PM
I wonder if Devil May Cry 4 will be announced for the Xbox 360 at the Tokyo Game Show, the Microsoft X06 Trade Show, or maybe after those shows, kind of like the way Assassins Creed was not announced for the Xbox 360 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo or the Game Convention, but it was announced afterwards. I can't wait to play Devil May Cry 4 on the Xbox 360.
