First PS3 Ridge Racer 7 screens surface

Fear not all you PlayStation 3 fans. Despite taking a few shots to the gut, we've got some positive content for you: the first Ridge Racer 7 screenshots. Of course, you'll have to check after the break to see every single morsel.
For those not in the know, RR7 for the PS3 will have 40 different cars available to race on more than 22 different tracks. There will also be the obligatory exterior and tuning customization we've come to know with recent racing games. So, after looking at these screenshots, what do you think? Is it worth $600+ to play?

Let me help you with that:
No.
Jake @ Sep 6th 2006 5:01PM
God I'm pumped about this game. Sitting down and playing it will make waiting over a year for the PS3 Oh so worth it. Eat your hearts out Microsofties and Wiitards.
Deric Lee @ Sep 6th 2006 5:01PM
Looks great in still shots, now lets see it in motion.
To answer the question, No, it's not worth that much.
....now when MGS4 and FFX13 hit...then mabey
Tyler @ Sep 6th 2006 5:01PM
Looks gorgeous so far, but it's hardly a title I would buy the PS3 for. I'll get the PS3 no doubt, but RR7 is the last thing on my mind when that time comes.
LaughingTarget @ Sep 6th 2006 5:02PM
If it is anything like Ridge Racer 6, a vanilla, boring racer, then probably not. RR6 wasn't worth a $400 360. A prettier version sure isn't going to be worth $600.
MMurdock @ Sep 6th 2006 5:02PM
The second to the last picture looked good. But I have to second that with a no. And especially not since PGR looks just as good.
Dracula Jones @ Sep 6th 2006 5:02PM
Are you sure those aren't Oblivion screens with a car Photoshopped in?
Tim @ Sep 6th 2006 5:04PM
RIIIIIIIIDGE RAAAAACER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marc @ Sep 6th 2006 5:05PM
Those graphics don't look too special. I thought the PS3 could do better than *that*.
Besides, there's no gameplay shots.
computer gamer @ Sep 6th 2006 5:07PM
A link to larger screenshots would be cool.
I can see it now, "Lads, weve had a bad day - release the RR7 pre rendered screenies to get the fanboys chanting again". ;)
Seriously though, it does look pretty damn good but doubtful anything the 360 can't pull off (in RR8).
Eric Bostrom @ Sep 6th 2006 5:09PM
The psp has me burnt out on racing games. Mariokart ds and the burnout series (esp. legends & revenge) are all I need.
Golden @ Sep 6th 2006 5:10PM
I would buy this game and a PS3 at launch for no more than $399.99 ... throw in a extra controller as well o_O
Wedge @ Sep 6th 2006 5:11PM
Why does the sky in every picture seem to consist of nothing more than retina burning bloom?
Pretty Obvious @ Sep 6th 2006 5:11PM
PGR3 looks better then this.
So to answer your question. No.
csc @ Sep 6th 2006 5:11PM
it took 7 posts to get to the joke.......Im dissapointed in you all.
Used Games @ Sep 6th 2006 5:12PM
Eat your heart out .....what? Wait a sec, by the time you eve get your PS3, i'll have been playing games on my nextgen system for over a year and yeah, I can still afford to eat. Good luck trying to get one of those 500,000 units there slick. It doesn't look any better than PGR but it does look interesting. Take a pill you fruit cake.
vidGuy @ Sep 6th 2006 5:15PM
Nice pictures. I'm glad they're free.
Eagle @ Sep 6th 2006 5:16PM
That looks so much better than PGR3...but enough to warrant a PS3's purchase? I think not...I'll still be buying a PS3 at launch, but not for RR7...games like Lair and Resistance seem more tailored to my tastes...
I'll probably pass on this and just wait for the next GT...those are true racing games.
vakerorokero @ Sep 6th 2006 5:20PM
Last great Ridge Racer was #4. Namco lost it after the Playstation One. I will still buy it, my god it's RIIIIIIIIIDGE RAACEEEEERRRRRR!!!!
striderhayasa @ Sep 6th 2006 5:21PM
After seeing Test Drive Unlimited and Gotham 3, why should I care? Cmon now, We've seen some excellent racing games from the current gen, All RR7 can shout about are better graphics and more cars "yawn". If memory serves, Forza Motorspot, Gran Turismo and Burnout looked damn good on Ps2 and Xbox.
This has always been my problem with PS3 vs 360 debates. For any game you point to at Ps3s launch, there will be a comparable title on 360. Case in point, Resistance Fall of Man, or Gears of War? Are 360 owners going to feel bad after seeing the retail version of Gears in the face of PS3. Not a chance.
Try again, BandaiNamco. Another Ridge Racer is not going to inspire me to shell out 600 bones for a PS3.
Evan @ Sep 6th 2006 5:22PM
It will be so nice to drive in the pictured environments and feel the rumble of the cobblestones through the controller... oh, wait.
Kayzai @ Sep 6th 2006 5:25PM
Bad News days so..... What do we get??? RIIIIIIDGE RACER Renders!!!
Just like the E3 fake In-game movies!!!
Hahahaha... Pull another one
David @ Sep 6th 2006 5:27PM
Is anyone else confused about the helicopter? 40 cars yeah who cares, i wanna know how many helicopters!
ALH @ Sep 6th 2006 5:27PM
'9. Those graphics don't look too special. I thought the PS3 could do better than *that*.'
Agreeing wholeheartedly, they dont really look that impressive, especially the first one after the cut- the waterfall in the background looks really last gen, though the small sizes are probably not helping.
Buckshot @ Sep 6th 2006 5:27PM
Who the hell races in the Cambodian jungle?
Paul P. @ Sep 6th 2006 5:27PM
It's Ridge Racer 7.
RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RAAAAAAAAACER SSSSSEEEEEEEEVEEEEEEEEEEN!
Remember that one?
rjg @ Sep 6th 2006 5:29PM
Does anyone seriously care about Ridge Racer anymore?
csc @ Sep 6th 2006 5:33PM
@ 27
Kaz does
Eggman @ Sep 6th 2006 5:36PM
The environments look good, the car model looks good... however when u put them together they don't seem to fit. The lighting on the car seems as if its sitting in a demo room. It looks the same in all screens (i'm sure it has reflections but not only has that been done since last gen but it just isn't enuf).
Anyway, the game was a sub par racer on the x360. A prettier version of that still doesn't justify the $50-70, w/e it retails for much less than a console purchase. I'm looking forward to forza 2 a LOT more and gt5 (not gt4 HD, gt4 was a huge dissapointment in a lot of areas, prettier graphics will again not solve that).
rjg @ Sep 6th 2006 5:39PM
I wonder what part of this game is '4d'. ;)
kyou @ Sep 6th 2006 5:39PM
First of all: RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!
Second: Well, those pictures give us nothing. I don't think anyone is buying the PS3 for THAT particular game. Most of us planning to buy the PS3 eventually is mostly because of MGS4, FF13 and GTA and Assasins Creed for those of us who aren't planning on buying a 360.
darryl @ Sep 6th 2006 5:39PM
"Is it worth $600+ to play?"
At $600 I'd say it's quite the bargain if the game truly looks this good. Can't wait!
striderhayasa @ Sep 6th 2006 5:42PM
@ botox
If it wasn't for Virtual Fighter 4, I never would have bought a PS2.
@ eggman, you want to know the irony of it all. I recently picked up a PSP for cheap and RR on PSP is actually pretty good. but I got that on the come up so it still doesn't qualify as a "system seller." I agree though. Definately looking forward to forza 2.
get over it @ Sep 6th 2006 5:42PM
so we start off saying there's positive content but then poison the well by adding "Is it worth $600+ to play?"
is there a single 360 game worth $400+ to play?
i'm having a blast with Dead Rising... not worth $400+
which one is worth $400+ King Kong, PGR3, NFS:MW, GRAW, Kameo, Oblivion, Saints Row or how about PDZ?
where's that $400+ game for the 360, someone please let me know so i can justify buying mine for one game.
there is no one game to point to for the pricetag on the 360, it's all the games we will be playing on it for the duration of the consoles lifespan that justified the purchase in our minds. the same is true for the ps3 so everybody should just lay off the whole "that game's not worth $600+" shtick and quit bashing anyones decision to buy a particular console.
or is that too mature?
Agent MOO @ Sep 6th 2006 5:43PM
Well, Let me just say that ridge racer 6 was not worth $50 to own...

ill trooper @ Sep 6th 2006 5:44PM
First off, can we stop acting like people who want to buy a PS3 are only buying it for ONE game? As in, saying "I'm not paying $600 to play MetalGear."
Did anyone here buy a 360 solely to play Gun?
Daran @ Sep 6th 2006 5:49PM
@ 37.
Gun cannot even be compared to a game like MGS4.
People bought the 360 on the prospect of all these cool games coming out on the horizon and also due to the fact that it was (and still IS) the only next gen console around right now.
cringer8 @ Sep 6th 2006 5:53PM
Actually, what the question means is, "Could this game be a system seller?"
Which is a pretty apt question considering the excitement Sony placed behind announcing it at E3. They seemed to think it could be a system seller.
Paul P. @ Sep 6th 2006 5:57PM
No, but I bought a gun solely to get a 360. Does that count?
Goblin @ Sep 6th 2006 5:59PM
I bought the 360 pretty much for PGR3. The only other factor was that it replaced the media center PC in the bedroom in a smaller, nicer form factor, but for the same cash I could have built a small little media PC. So, yeah, I bought the 360 for one game.
Kiggle @ Sep 6th 2006 6:02PM
obligatory: RIIIIIIIIDGE RACER!
seriously tho, looks very nice. but the 360 can do it, and no one even questions that at this point. so do you want to buy a $400 console with games like Oblivion, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Saint's Row, and Gears of War all available by this holiday season, or fight tooth and nail to be one in 400,000 in the entirety of North America to be 'lucky' enough to spend $600 (add a one before that if it's on eBay, mark my words) to play Ride Racer, Ressistance: Fall of Man, and.... what else now? Is Heavenly Sword coming out this fall? With the barrier to entry, does anyone really care anymore?
At this point I'm pulling hard for a Sony Miracle, just because I think it's dangerous to give MSFT such a monopoly in the console industry this quickly.
Anthony @ Sep 6th 2006 6:06PM
GUN, HA HA HAH, ARE YOU SERIOUS....THAT'S LIKE SAYING I BOUGHT MY DREAMCAST TO PLAY CEL DAMAGE......LOL
oblongmouth @ Sep 6th 2006 6:07PM
Wowsers, a Ridge Racer game - how ace. Or completely not ace at all, who gives a shit about some arbitrary screen shots - its not like they're actual in-action playing screens.
There's very little chance that i'm going to wait 2 years to be able to afford a PS3, to then play a game as tedious as the Ridge Racer series - they should've stopped at 1.
nope, X360s driving games look pretty enough & are available now, and for half the price of the PS3.
Desert @ Sep 6th 2006 6:18PM
What's funny about these racing games, is that you NEVER see the scenery when you're actually playing the game. Maybe they should put some of this power to use in damage modeling and physics.
Ritz @ Sep 6th 2006 6:19PM

I think the meaning behind the question of "Is game X worth so and so much for a console?" is not asking if that is the only game you would buy. Or even if owning it alone would be worth so and so much cash you've invested in a console. Try to think of it as "Is this the killer app that will have you wishing you owned the console so you could play it?"
Super Smash Bro's Melee on Gamecube
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas on PS2
Halo 2 on Xbox
Examples like that. I imagine most owners of each system have played if not owned at least one of those games. What does the PS3 have to offer that everyone has to play? Would RR7 be that game?
My thought is no. But MGS would probably do it for me. Or Halo 3 on Xbox 360. Or Metroid Prime 3 on Wii.
Joe @ Sep 6th 2006 6:20PM
RIIIIIIDGE RACEEEER! *complete silence because nobody cares*
Nmaster @ Sep 6th 2006 6:22PM
I've seen REAL cars go for cheaper...
vidGuy @ Sep 6th 2006 6:28PM
I think the question is an appropriate one. It's not asking, "Would you pay $675 for Ridge Racer 7", but, "Does this game tip you over the edge into buying a PS3?". It seems the answer is a resounding no, but it's still a fair question.
Let's go back to late 2001. The XBOX has just been released, and the question is posed: "Is it worth $300+ to play Halo?". Tons of people would say yes.
Let's look at the Wii. "Is it worth $250+ to play the Wii version of the Legend of Zelda?" Even though the game is being released on another system and doesn't even use the potential of the console, a large percentage of the voters would say yes.
Now change games: "Is it worth $600+ to play MGS4?". More people would answer yes than for RR7.
No, you aren't buying a system for one game. But that's not the question. The question is if this could be a system seller like Sony (apparently) so desperately wants it to be.
bm @ Sep 6th 2006 6:31PM
"At $600 I'd say it's quite the bargain if the game truly looks this good. Can't wait!"
Hah, wait, were you being sarcastic? I can't seem to tell.
As for the screenshots, they look very nice...but so did Ico and SotC for the PS2, if you know what I mean. And if you don't know what I mean, let me spell it out: they look like something the PS2 could do. They're pretty! But still. People go all "oooh next gen" while conveniently forgetting how good the current gen actually looks, and how it's not that big of a leap.
Michael @ Sep 6th 2006 6:36PM
Anyone else think that that car bears a stricking resemblance to the 2008 Nissan GT-R:
