I think the question is an appropriate one. It's not asking, "Would you pay $675 for Ridge Racer 7", but, "Does this game tip you over the edge into buying a PS3?". It seems the answer is a resounding no, but it's still a fair question.

Let's go back to late 2001. The XBOX has just been released, and the question is posed: "Is it worth $300+ to play Halo?". Tons of people would say yes.

Let's look at the Wii. "Is it worth $250+ to play the Wii version of the Legend of Zelda?" Even though the game is being released on another system and doesn't even use the potential of the console, a large percentage of the voters would say yes.

Now change games: "Is it worth $600+ to play MGS4?". More people would answer yes than for RR7.

No, you aren't buying a system for one game. But that's not the question. The question is if this could be a system seller like Sony (apparently) so desperately wants it to be.

Anyone else think that that car bears a stricking resemblance to the 2008 Nissan GT-R:

"At $600 I'd say it's quite the bargain if the game truly looks this good. Can't wait!"

Hah, wait, were you being sarcastic? I can't seem to tell.

As for the screenshots, they look very nice...but so did Ico and SotC for the PS2, if you know what I mean. And if you don't know what I mean, let me spell it out: they look like something the PS2 could do. They're pretty! But still. People go all "oooh next gen" while conveniently forgetting how good the current gen actually looks, and how it's not that big of a leap.

So many haters nowadays ... i wonder how many people that posted in this news will actually buy a PlayStation 3 ... because it seems like many angry Xboxers and Nintendo boys to me.

If you dont like the console and the games perfect dont criticize something about you dont care at all.

People wants constructive critics and comments.

I will never understand Fanboys you can have it all if you want i have a 360 and definitely i will get a PlayStation 3 in the next couple of months.

Was Ridge Racer 6 worth paying $300-400 on the 360?

No of course not but it was a half-decent arcade racer.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Raaaaaaaaaaaaacer (sorry I had to do it lol) has a niche audience and it will appeal to that niche...not much else.

I'm an XBox 360 owner. I'm a BIG racing fan. I own PGR3 and have that game thoroughly beaten, and qualified in the top 64 in the US region in that first PGR3 tournament. I'm waiting for Forza 2 as if it was the second coming of Jesus Christ.

So if anything I'm an XBox fanboy.

However, the screenshots of Ridge Racer 7 on PS3 look MUCH better than PGR3 and especially Forza 2's dissapointing screenshots from yesterday. It's a no contest. In terms of overall graphics, this one's a winner. The landscapes look amazing, there's nothing like that in PGR3 or Forza 2. The car model is way too small and angled so that I can't really say this or that about it.

That being said, the true measure of a racing game is how it drives. As long as the graphics aren't crappy, a great driving model (such as Forza's) will win over gorgeous graphics any time.

"What's funny about these racing games, is that you NEVER see the scenery when you're actually playing the game."

Extremely good point.

Why spend all those processor cycles generating sharp, detailed road scene renderings at 1080p if you're just going to lose a good amount of that detail when the motion blur filter is applied anyway?

All these still screenshots show me is that the RR7 engine is pretty good for generating still screenshots.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Forza's competitor Gran Turismo? Forza is more of a sim racer then an arcade racer so its not really a fair comparison.

PGR is a little close to Ridge Racer but not quite the same either.

I did forget to point out that while the graphics are spectacular, I totally digging the ruined temple environment though. ^_^

Will I buy the game? Hmm...maybe. I am sort of a fan of the series...but the last game in the series that really caught my attention was Rage Racer and Ridge Racer: R4 (despite it being REALLY short.)

This is the problem: how are we supposed to know if a game is worth buying just by looking at the pictures? Seriously. What kind of bullshit is that? The game could just consist of a slideshow for all we know and you want us to judge whether we'd buy a $600 PS3 based on a stupid picture? Come, on, you can do better than that.

I suspect these are pre-rendered concept images, and the game will probably be mediocre either way, but they're certainly better graphically than PGR3, in all of its 1024x600-scaled-up-to-720p glory, running at a whopping 30 fps.

PGR3 was quite a scam. They released all sorts of BS images claiming "these are in-game", because they used the engine to create them, but the actual, honest-to-god racing (not "cinema mode", or "press release" mode) weren't that great. They were much lower resolution, scaled up, and the frame rate was cruddy.

RR7 will probably be another forgettable effort, and these images may be a scam, but these press releases are certainly better than PGR3, and the countless MS fanboys here are looking at them through their Microsoft goggles.

Go cry in the corner, not everybody has desposable income they can throw into videogaming. Fans root for their system in the hope that more games come to their system so that they dont have to hand over more money for another console to play more videogames.

I bet you, that if it were flipped over so that Sony was in Microsoft's position, and Microsoft AND Nintendo were in Sony's position (Nintendo's position didnt exist for arguments sake) ... Sony fanboys would be laughing SO so hard at MSFB and NFBs.

Sony finally get their just desserts for all the mistakes that they're making. Then here come the Sony fanboys who are all like ... "ZOMG You're all haterz!" or "Why cant we all just get along? ;___; ". You're getting what you equally deserve. o____o;; Please dont kick someone in the groin and then expect NOT to get the same treatment some time down the road. Its like they can dish out the abuse but cant take any of it in return.

And thats another thing, fanboys stand on a certain point, and when the point gets moot, they all jump on another point and claim the former is unimportant.

Forexample: Assassin's Creed for PS3
SonyFB: YEAH RIGHT LIKE THIS IS COMING TO YOUR SHITTY XBOX360 !!one!unicorn
News: "Assassin's Creed is coming out on XBox360"
SonyFB: LOL LOL LOL, WHO CARES, ITS JUST ONE GAME, ITS SHITTY ANYWAY LOLOLOL!!!triceratops

example2: PS3 will be a worldwide launch, 4 million unit prediction
SFB: YEAH! See they're so great! They're[Sony] going to release it everywhere at roughly the same time!! Even in European countries! 4 Million, WOAH!
News: "Prediction cut in half to 2 million, PAL territories wait till March 2007"
SFB: PFFFT, Who didnt see that coming, it was expected! .. Who gives a crap about those Eurogamers, they're so lame! They dont count!

... Yes. Sony Fanboys astound me.

To all you noobs who already claims RR7 looks better than PGR3, please analyze those pics before you claim anything.

-PGR3 never released screens of "forest" or landscape. It looks realistic.. yeah, look at how small the pictures are, once they release large size pics, you'll see the difference. Did you check Metal Gear Snake Eater?? The forests shots were amazing, right? If it could be done on PS2, it could be easily done on PS3.

-Those shots above either contains ONE car only or NONE. It means that Namco didn't need to divide the polygon between background and other cars. Remember this: it's pre-launch tactics. They are trying to hype the game with incredible graphics, and those images could very well NOT be part of the game! They did the same thing with RR6 on Xbox 360.

You people who actually played PGR3 or RR6 knows that in game real time graphics aren't up to the quality of released shots before the launch of PGR3. This is the same case with RR7.

ANYWAY, just go here
http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/761/761304/imgs_37.html
save any pics to your desktop, open with windows image viewer, reduce it to small size. Do you see any differences?

Yeah. The PS3 shots look a lot better than the shrunk-down X360 shots. Still, I think we can all agree RR360 was crap, so it aint saying much.

(Kotaku has higher-res versions, BTW.)

2) Gray

...pick two.

PS3 can do much better than this.

Besides, hyper-realistic graphics do nothing if the cars just bounce off the walls. I wanna see the game in action.

Are some of you blind? The variety of vegetation and background are WAYYYY better here than in PGR 3, which just clumps a whole whack of cheap trees in there. The textures on the environments look super sharp and detailed one these.

Yeah, go ahead and tell me that these PGR screens below look as sharp, varied, and as detailed as these PS3 screens. LOL

Wow! And look at all of those sharp roadside PGR textures! Yeah right. Dream on.

Of course though I need to see this in motion. But for those saying these screens are not as good as PGR, you might want to take a lot closer look.
