Sony's fumble gives Microsoft, Nintendo a share of PS3's holiday pie

Yeah, you'll have to turn down the graphics and 'sacrifice quality' after a year or two, but on a console you'll just have the game STUCK at those lower graphics settings. It's just like a console -- you get the same graphics through the lifetime of the machine, minus improvements due to better programming.

And you don't even need to spend $1000. I can build a system that will make Oblivion (the most demanding game I've yet to see on PC) look pretty for, oh, probably about $700. And that's for the initial machine. If you pick your parts well, that upgrade 3-4 years later could cost you much less than that. Also consider that you save money on peripherals. Controller costs add up. Memory cards aren't cheap either, though those could be on their way out for good.

You also already HAVE a computer, obviously. There's no reason to spend all the cash on a new one when you can just upgrade the one you have.

And you can justify the higher price by the fact that you can just play way more games with a PC.

(As a side note, gaming DID first get me into programming -- in BASIC many, many years ago.)

I play on the PC and consoles, pretty much equally. The only reason that consoles are significantly cheaper for me is that I buy everything (systems, games, controllers) used. This PC can run anything I throw at it, and its last two upgrades cost me $40 six months ago and $125 two years ago. People who spend massive amounts of money on gaming rigs are usually idiots (at least when it comes to buying gaming rigs).

This isn't what is causing a drop in Sony's stock...well, not a lot anyway. If we look at the general market trends in the Electronics industry, we'll find that Sony's prices are mirroring general market prices. A massive factor in a company's prices is just how well all of their competition is doing. The electronics industry is in a stagnation mode right now, and Sony is following right along with it.

The only time a company is doing something exceptionally right or wrong is when their price trends fall out of tandem with industry market prices.

If Sony is smart the will sell the PS3 to Europe at a reduced price. Eventhough I live in Canada, I think that would be the wise thing to do. I don't carfe about the component shortages they should have anticipated this. They over promise way too much and then have to back track like idiots. If they had used the same tactics as Nintendo and been less specific about the launch details they would have annouced these figures without the "shock and awe" aspect. Now they seem to be taking the Euros for granted not a smart thing to do. Who knows if the build up of anticipation for the PS3's launch can last until March or will this lastest screw up by Sony significantly reduce the hype surrounding it.It is time for Sony to shut up and deliver this must be extremley embarassing for them.

I never said being gay was a bad thing. I was merely hypothisizing on why you take an overly machismo approach to debate. Beating people up? Really? For doing something different? The only people that would approve or accept such an approach either have self-esteem issues or are overcompensating.

This is a really big loss for Sony. It'd be one thing if the PS3 was the only new console coming out this Fall (then it'd be a similar situation as Xbox 360 last year), but it's not, because Wii will be out and this is going to be great for Nintendo and Microsoft as a result.

Boy oh boy, sometimes I wish I wasn't a gamer. So much drama. So much blatant hate! I'm telling you, I cannot WAIT until all the consoles are released and firmly planted into the industry. Then we can actually, you know, compare them.

And I've really never seen so much emphasis being put on a launch before. Launches suck! It's a fact of life! I myself don't buy any consoles until a year or two after the release, for obvious reasons.

Hahahaha Never Tried The Xbox 360 What I Meant To Say Was I Never Bought

I do think that the Wii and the 360 will both benefit from this. How can they not? Like another poster stated, people tend to want the latest thing, and if they can't get a PS3 for themselves or their children this year because of either the price point (can't afford it or just don't want to pay that much) or the fact that they can't find one anywhere, they're going to buy the 360 or the Wii, not a PS2 (which most will already have, hence the want for the PS3), Xbox, or a Gamecube.

I personally will be buying a Wii this holiday season because:

A) It's the one system I can afford with bills, a wife, and a 2 year-old to pay for.

and 2) Not only is it going to offer a unique gaming experience, but I will also be able to play those games that I remember from my youth and teenage years through the Virtual Console. I mean, I never has a Genesis, but my best friend did, and when I went over there, instead of his SNES, we played the Genesis, and I can't wait to play some of those games again.

Like someone else here said, why does it matter which system sells the most? Why do you care? You're going to buy the one you want to buy, end of story. I mean, yeah, I like the fact that my friends all have a DS because I can play multiplayer games with them, but I also like the fact that they have systems that I don't own, because when I go over to hang out, I get to play games I myself don't have and I don't have to buy them.
