Major next-gen console news coming tonight [update 1]

We just got handed a scoop for some important news with one of the next-generation consoles. We can't talk about any specifics yet, but you have our word that this announcement is something worth waiting for.

Expect all the info tonight here at Joystiq at 12:01 a.m. Eastern.

Joystiq is weird. On the one hand, the site tries to be the first to break all of the news, no matter where the source, etc etc.

And then every now and then they play this "respectable journalist" card. Lame.

wasnt the Wii name released around a week before E3? seems like a price/date would fit the pattern.

It would be HILARIOUS if this was a prank.

Unless it has to do with the PS3 shipping enough units that I can stroll into a store two days after release and pick up one....and get the good model for $350, it's not worth the hype.

My bets are on another PS3 delay or problem. Sony has been giving us so much drama, just give me a console already!

All I care about is a Xbox360 or PS3 price drop.

Nintendo is still too greedy to release the Wii at anything under $250. They gave $250 as the cap, and they will come in at $249.99

The PS3 most likely wont have any new news since they ungraciously dropped a vicious bombshell yesterday.

Chances are it's a Xbox360 story. They've been out of the news for too long. PR hates that. MS wants to stir up something; drop Halo3 tidbits to run interference. They arent going to drop the price this far ahead of the xmas shopping season, and with as much wiggle room as Sony has left them.

Logically, it seems like it must be big X360 news. Important PS3 news has already been flowing this week, and Wii's big news comes next week. There, that's my guess.

I'm gonna guess that the guys at Bungie have been messing with all of us, and indeed Halo 3 will be coming out in November, to counter the PS3 global launch, erm, uh, the PS3 semi-worldwide hypothetical availablity date.

Or yeah, Wii news.

The PS3, while it will cost $600, will be bundled with 4 wirelss controllers, an HD cable (despite "rumors"), two premier games, a check for $600, and Nintendo's Mario's head!!

I seriously doubt it's a price and or release confirmation for the Wii. That may be big news, but everyone knows it's news that's going to be released soon, so it's hardly the thing a teaser announcement for big news coming later to this site would be suitable for. That would be akin to that MAJOR Gears of War announcement from the developer on their forum boards a while back that was nothing particularly major at all. After Joystiq called them out on that, they better have something really major to boast about soon.

X360 doesn't have anything major to announce unless they "unexclusified" some major title from Sony or Nintendo. Otherwise, they've been spilling beans at every chance. The HD DVD drive isn't MAJOR news. Just news. It's not internal and the movies cost toooo much to justify this big "WAIT UNTIL TONIGHT!"

Remember what happened to South Park and their prank in the "Cartman's Father" episode. They showed a Terrance & Phillip episode instead, and the backlash was unbelievable.

You know, Joystiq could be bound by some non-disclosure agreement not to mention the details until it turns Friday Sept. 7. Just a possibility.

Anyhoo, the news is that Capcom, Konami, and Square-Enix will partner to make a console and their games will henceforth be exclusive to the system. It is tentatively named "Garbonzo". The Big 3 had these to say:

Sony's Ken Kutaragi: "Backstabbers! After all the money we spent to imprison, I mean, keep them with us!"

MS's Peter Moore: "Dang..."

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime: "They have Ryu, Snake, and Cloud; we have Mario, Link, and Samus. Buy a Wii and Garbonzo and be happy!"

Didn't you guys learn anything from the whole Gears of War fiasco? Now, no matter how great or huge the news, it will almost definately be a letdown. Still, neat to see how easy it is to get gamers so excited, we never learn...

XBOX360: I bet the HDDVD Addon or a new SKU with HDDVD integrated will get some more info.

Wii: Price + Date + Bundles

PS3: Another delay? Marketting ploy finished? ie Low price, quicker release, more technology.

Face it gok, you and everyone else wants to be America (yes, even you Canada)....we rule- why else would Sony say screw Europe and Japan? Damn, I love this counrty.

Any way, I hope that no matter what it is, it's bad news for Sony (I think I speak for all of us when I say- suck it Ken we've had enough BS to last a lifetime). And look, I want a Wii (mostly for Zelda) but some of you Nintendo fanboys have to tone it down a notch. Yeah, Nintendo is going to do a lot more biz this time around but please don't go spoting off that the big N is going to be #1 world wide- that's just silly talk. Cheer your console on but get a grip on things- you don't go from 3nd to 1st overnight.

And just as a side note, I can't stop thinking about Reggie saying "We're about kicking ass and taking names." Since when? 1989?

First thing that popped in my head is Wii news. As someone mentioned, Nintendo has set a presidence to release the "bad"/"strange"/"weird" news (such as the name "wii") before a major conference, so they can let all the jokes, anger, denial subside.

Another thing it could be is another PS3 exlcusive going to the Xbox 360.

The last thing that came to mind, was its a HOAX.
