There are only two games on 360 that require a hard drive. One is a soccer management simulation that's only available in Europe, the other is Final Fantasy XI (which, according to comments in this thread about the series, does not exist).

Possibly of interest and not widely known: You don't need Xbox Live Gold to play FFXI. You only need silver and a FFXI subscription.

@19 - If you compare 5 different systems to three... and four of those 5 are handhelds. With the highest priced nintendo 'console' costing under $130, of course Nintendo is going to outsell everyone else. It should probably be noted though that Of those five systems you noted for Nintendo, three of them are remakes of an earlier system. If you keep repackaging something enough times, people will keep buying it.

I can't believe no one else has said this... XBox 360, with its horrible selling in Japan has already sold more than the PS3 will to start. So, at least until the second shipment, 360 is winning the console war in Japan.

Ha. No, I'm not a fanboy. I was really hoping the OS3 would work out, but I think they've shot themselves in the foot so many times, they'll be hard to recover.

As for "Cracking the Japanese market isn't an amazing or an impossible feat..." exactly how many times has this been achieved by a non-native game system?

Exactly zero. Microsoft is the only company to even make a serious attempt at it. (The closest previously might be considered 3DO but they were a Matsushita/Panasonic product in Japan.) So there is hardly a lot of precedent here.

People point to the iPod but what did Apple have to do to line up native software support? Exactly nothing. People ripped their own CDs and getting local content onto the Japanese iTunes didn't require that content to be newly created from scratch.

People seem to beleive there is a rule book for selling stuff in Japan but all that really exists is some opinion with no history in the industry in question to back anything up. You can throw lots of money at the problem but that rarely gets the job done.

"But seriously, I figure it's just because they hate freedom so much."

Seriously, what's with assuming that ALL of those who sell and/or own the Xbox 360 are nationalistic jingoists who don't respect other cultures? Sure, there are some Xbox 360 owners who are chauvinistic and hold the naive assumption of American cultural superiority, but you can find just as many gamers who hold a similar chauvinistic viewpoint on any gaming platform, from Sony to Nintendo to PC. Assuming anyone who owns and enjoys an Xbox 360, and assuming those who make it and sell it, to be nationalistic, militaristic blowhards is nothing but silly prejudice. When did it get to be so in vogue to judge one's political viewpoints based on what console one owns? Owning an Xbox 360 doesn't make one a Bush supporter, or a supporter of any of America's policies for that matter. And I'm sure working for Microsoft doesn't automatically make one any of the above either.

Honestly, stop making assumptions about Xbox 360 owners and makers.

Seriously, Webimpulse, you should learn not to take things so ... seriously. That was satiric.

You bunch of ignorant, racist fanboys.

Do pastey douche bags know what really sells consoles? Eroge and Dating Sims. If MS can get a por of Fate/stay night or Kanon to the XBOX, the 360 sales will EASILY BEAT PS3 WEEK AFTER WEEK IN JAPAN. Why do you think Dreamcast lasted this long in Japan? Friggin Sonics? FRACK, I hate the PS3, but if there's a Fate port to the PS3 I'll line up on launch day to get one.

The pasty geek 'Merkins like J Allard and Billy Gates will never, EVER get the Japanese gamers.
