@vidguy
"All I saw was that the remote was confirmed to have 6KB available; then there was days of speculation about what it would be used for. Many expected it to be used for calibration and user settings, but a lot said it was too small."

I know cringer8 already confirmed this (hough I'd love to see a link to the interview), I would like to point out how much could be stored on 6Kb. Typically, 1 byte (1b) is equivalent to 1 character (one letter, number, or symbol that is). 6Kb would be more than enough to store a name, some controller settings, and even a small picture.

For example, goto:
http://www.goyamen.com/Joystiq/6Kb.html
Now, obviously the data I made up for this example isn't the same as what Nintendo will be storing, but everthing you see at that page, including the picture, adds up to a total of 3324b or 3.3Kb (appx. conversion, 1024b = 1KB). That's not encrypted or anything, but it does include the HTML data (which is about 30b).

The point is 6Kb is plenty of space to store user information.

thats because theyve gotten lots of other things wrong....one example is on this very page. they state that the wiimote will have no rumble. wii.nintendo.com says there will be rumble and in an IGN interview with Tomm Hutlett of Trauma Center (posted today), they talk about the rumble feature.

So what if your wii breaks, do you have to go rebuy all those games from the virtual console?

Yamen, 6KB is more than enough because everything can be stored as a text file, with the player-dependant data in plain text and the Wii console software doing all of the formating, adjusting, etc. A gamer pic can be stored internally and the remote would only have to point to the picture, so even if the pic was 8KB or more it would still be easy to associate it with a remote. I was only commenting on the size-issue because many gamers didn't understand how 6KB could be used efficiently... meaning there was a rather lengthy discussion on the topic of the remote's internal memory.

While I'll appreciate your comment, there's some things that need notice. Typically, a lower case 'b' refers to a bit, not a byte. A byte is 8 bits and is represented by 'B'. 3324b = 415.5 B, or about 6.7% of what 6KB could hold. 8192b = 1KB An 8 bit word does often represent a character, though. Plain old ASCII uses 7 bits to represent every alphanumeric character, plus a ton of symbols.

Yes, 6KB is more than enough to do a ton of things. Honestly, a complete user profile could be stored in 1KB, within the remaining 5KB being used to store settings to specific games. This has been hinted at; for example, Metroid Prime 3 would adjust the settings and control methods based on which remote/user turned the game on.
----
As an example of size, all of the text before the line is less than 1.5KB when saved in plain text. That's about twice the text needed to adjust settings for individual users.

@ Leper Messiah,

They'll probably be linked to a user profile, just like the XBLM. That way, if you lose the downloads, you can redownload everything for free. Not time efficient, but cheap.

And here I thought the 6kb would be used for something like sound data for the speaker.

Settings would likely be stored on the Wii. After all, the wii is the one that is receiving all the signals, it could fine tune and adjust the incoming signals far easier than the wiimote.

Besides, how else is sound going to work on the wiimote without memory?
