Last week's winners VG Cats were too busy this week pillagingliberating the lands to join the polls today. It's a day of extra excitement. Let's see if an underdog entry take out a big-league player. Here are some of our favorite gaming webcomics this week -- be sure to vote for the best!
There may be a lot of PS3 satires but you know what, at the end of the day they have brought this on themselves. It is incredibly seldom that a day goes by without some negative Sony press, it really has become a bit ridiculous. All the people I know (admitedly not a scientificaly supportable sample) that want PS3's are casual gamers that don't know their MGS from their MMORPG and are just looking for the latest Football games (that they will ironicaly have to look to Xbox for... for now)
38 Weeks later and you're only now adding CubeToons to the roster? Oh wait, nevermind...it's anti-Sony, so it gets the AAA seal of approval from Joystiq, no matter how irrelevant, and how many other comics from the same artist you've completely ignored!
Glad to see you took my advice on the wrap up mr. miller... at least i think you did. that, or im deluding myself. anyhoo.
My vote probably goes to the new guy from random domain.
I dont much get the penny arcade comic, i understand that its funny but why? and why is mario in there? Can somebody explain so i dont wander in the path of ignorance?
In Joystiq's defense, I wrote them and asked why they never used cubetoons and told them they should. I am surprised they listened!!! also.... it was really relevant to the huge news that was going on with Sony. Name one positive news peice about Sony that Joystiq hasn't posted!!!!! They actually go out of their way to find it more than some other sites do!!!!
anyways. Nice Soylent green reference Ross. Wonder if the younger crowd will get it though!!!
#12 Woah, Psaakyrn you're right to an extent, I hadn't seen that. The RPG-TV does share that VGCats theme but we honestly were not aware of that comic when we wrote ours. I swear on the Dreamcast's grave... God rest its soul *bows head in respectful silence*
I think many people voted for Peny-arcade, and had no idea what the comic was about.
It about FFXII's system of setting up a guided AI for any of your team mates you are not controling. For ex: Player2: Start of battle= Hit enemy with highest HP. Player3: assist Player4. Player 4: buff party member. When team at full HP then hit lowest enemy in battle. Its called the "gambit system".
PA was just showing how the gambit system would be like in more simple games than RPGs. They were expressing concern that the system may overly simplify FFXII; however, they said in their news post, since they have not played the game they dont know how true there concern is. I myself never playing the game, can not judge either. Judging by import reviews there is probably nothing to worry about (9s and 10s), and the system just might work out.
I dont hate penny-arcade, nor am I flaming the people who voted for it. I am just saying don't always just vote on a fimilar name.
I am sure 80 % of the people who voted for Penny Arcade were just kids who thought the word masturbate in a comic was the funniest thing they have hever seen Madmatt. don't put so much thought into it.
Is it just me, or did somebody hack the poll to put Kilobyte in first? When I checked really late last night it was in last place with 9 votes. How did it jump up to 500+?
To #20, James Wheaton I can see why you would think the RPG-TV entry is similar however the only real similarity is that the consoles have been personified. The RPG-TV one takes place in a school environment and the end gag is a subtle nod towards the Dreamcasts unfortunate failure and its likely grudge against these "damn kids". The punchlines really are different. Then again my opinion is biased and you are welcome to think what you like :) Thanks for reading us anyway!
I would like to note that personification of consoles/games/ideas are very common (ranging all the way back to the Nintendo=Mario, Sega=Sonic theme). Putting them in a class room theme, not so common. Putting them in a classroom theme and having someone complain about late assignments? One might suspect of stolen ideas. Though I do admit that the final punchline is different between VGCats and RPG-TV.

Penny Arcade FTW!
(Random Domain is the runner up)
Tiago @ Sep 9th 2006 4:10PM
Glad to see the dreadful none of the above option disappear ^^
Perhaps people now'll think a bit before voting, or not vote at all which they have the right to anyway...

Wow, I just voted for the second least popular comic!
Does that mean that I can start feeling elitist?
I thought the writing of the "Fools!" one was really really good.
James Wheaton @ Sep 9th 2006 4:25PM
Dueling Analogs' Mega Man comic should have been in the mix: http://www.duelinganalogs.com/?date=2006-09-06
PSWii360 Fanbot @ Sep 9th 2006 4:31PM
The cubetoon is great, but the second part of the comic needs to be posted as well. It brings great closure.
Ghost @ Sep 9th 2006 5:54PM
Cubetoons is ok but I voted for RPG-TV because it mentions DreamCast.
Hooked on Polygons needs to learn to draw.
And Genrezvous Point isnt funny.
GSI @ Sep 9th 2006 6:05PM
-->"Hooked on Polygons needs to learn to draw."
It's not THAT bad. It's sure alot better then the stick figure one though (I forget what it was called.)

The stick figure one you are talking about GSI would Cyanide and Happiness (who usually don't do gaming related comics)
Their art may be basic, but I don't think it looks ugly, and I think it's funny half the time too :)
But at least the guy knows he can't draw :)
Joe @ Sep 9th 2006 6:32PM
Penny Arcade wins, though I liked the Prinny comic from earlier this week better.
Runner up is Gamer Pals. IGN likes it: sign me up!
Psaakyrn @ Sep 10th 2006 12:05AM
RPG-TV seems too similar to http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=203 though.. sure, the target's different, but the theme's still the same..

Honestly, this week was a little lackluster. As much as I hate Sony, after a certain point the PS3-bashing just ceases to be funny.

I lol'd at the RPG-TV comic so that get's my vote!
I love these arcade wrap ups!
Thanks Joystiq,

I would find RPG-TV's comic a little more original, if Press Start to Play didn't already do this: http://pressstarttoplay.net/comics.php?date=060818

I was wondering the same thing,
it ticks me off knowing the only
reason I might win is because someone
might have hacked the vote..

Umm... wow. No offence to the writers of kilobyte, but I call shenanigans. There's no way that many people suddenly decided to vote for that comic.
Whoever did this, you're an idiot. All it will do is make joystiq reconsider the voting process, and perhaps scrap it altogether.
MO @ Sep 11th 2006 12:31AM
All those comics were lame. Who chooses these?
+Leetbunny+ @ Sep 11th 2006 2:30AM
I agree 100% with Plufim, whoever is hacking the vote please stop, what you're doing is not funny at all..
