I thought nintendo's "entire back catalog" of titles would be made available. Isn't that what we were told?

The best games--alongside Nintendo's 1st party titles--were by Rare. Unfortunately we'll probably never see those.

Konami and Capcom also had high standards on the NES and SNES.

"Mike Tyson: Punch Out"

Heh. I still remember "Glass Joe," and that fat sumo guy you had to hit in a certain sequence.

How about this...

What if the launch games for all the consoles, 64, SNES, NES, and the rest, was at the launch for the VC?

I haven't read all the comments, but I'd love to see something like the Satellaview versions of games like Zelda and F-Zero 2. They were astoundingly good at the time and most people in the West have likely never heard of them.

However, even more "revolutionary" (sorry, I couldn't resist!) would be something like the few Nintendo 64 Disc Drive titles. Chief among them: The F-Zero X Track Editor. I have been searching in vain for a DD simply for that game - I've got the Japanese version of F-Zero X, so I know it would be compatible. Imagine being able to create the tracks, save them to a memory card or hard drive, then either uploading it to a central server (pipe dream, I know) or at least taking it to your friend's place.

Now *that's* how to take advantage of Wii.

Chip and dale: Rescue Rangers!! - that game was brill. I hope it makes it to VC.

Someone mentioned Silicon Valley for the N64 too, and i'd love to play that again as well.

With the 2 analogue sticks on the VC controller does that mean there is a chance that Geometry Wars might be able to come to VC too, or is that exclusive to Xbox360s arcade?

@ #19. "gamecube games will NOT be downloadable. at around 1.5GB they're simply too big."

no they are not. there are plenty of files on xbox live arcade that are a gig in size. plus I'm sure that not all gamecube games used the full capacity of the disc.

I guess your just limited on how much stoage space you have.

I really, really, really, really, want Goldeneye.. omg, that game is, in my eyes, the best FPS ever.

Anyway, here's my top 5 list:

1)Goldeneye(I know we won't get it)
2)Super Mario RPG: 7 stars
3)Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4)Super Mario 64
5)Duck Hunt

This gets me all excited for the Wii.

Nintendo basically said that their entire back catalog COULD be put on there (it's just as easy to port SMB as SMB3). Firstly, this only applies to 1st party games. Nintendo must secure the rights to the use of any 3rd party game before it gets put on the Virtual Console.

Secondly, no one should have ever expect the entire VC offering to be available at launch. Nintendo has been working on the system: the UI, the pay method, the download method, etc, so its not surprising that the system isn't full of games yet.

Thirdly, as many others have mentioned, releasing all of the games at once, if it was even possible, would be silly because some games wouldn't get the sales they were due. Releasing 5 - 20 a month will really keep the interest up throughout the Wii's lifetime.

God, people are daft.

Seirously, it's annoying. Punch-out!! Will not be Mike Tyson's Punch Out! The license for his likeness ran out in the 1980's, for fuck's sake. It's the same game but now has "Mr. Dream" at the end, which is the same boxer with different sprites.

That's not the only annoying thing. You see people saying things like Goldeneye, which is obviously just a clusterfuck. First there's the James Bond License, then there's the fact Rare owns the game but not the Bond license. And lots of people are listing lots of Rare games and lots of licensed games as well. The only Rare games Nintendo owns are the Donkey Kong ones.

Are you people unaware that Microsoft owns Rare? Do you people have no concept of licensing? Here's a hint, a licensed game from 1980 or 1990 is probably made by a company which no longer has the license rights to that character or movie!

Also, in regards to Nintendo's back catalog -

I'm sure Nintendo will eventually offer the entire back catalog (if incrementally - I don't imagine they'll all be ready at launch). However, people aren't just asking for Nintendo's complete back catalog. They're asking for the back catalogs of Capcom, Konami, Square Enix, Namco Bandai, Broderbund, Sega, Hudson, and a few other companies. Let's wait until Nintendo can reliably secure their participation before whining about a lack of games.

Now, with that said, I've got two lists of games. The first are the games I already own, and might buy if there was something sweet in it for me (like updated graphics, extra levels, etc.):

Mother
Mother 2 (EarthBound)
Chrono Trigger
River City Ransom
The Guardian Legend
Baseball Stars
Secret of Mana
Metroid
TwinBee
The Goonies II
Crystalis (the NES original, not the terrible GBC remake)

Now, the list of games I don't own, and would thus jump at getting even if it's just the original:

Milon's Secret Castle
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Mega Man Soccer
Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim 2
Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos
On The Ball
Phalanx
Axelay
Zero Wing
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire 2
7th Saga
ActRaiser
Guardian Heroes
EVO: the Search for Eden

@ Paul P

Read the title of the Post! It says Poll: What classic games do you want on the Wii?

People are just listing what they would like to see on the wii. Just because a company owns a licence to a game it doesn't mean Nintendo can't put it on the wii. That is why they are charging for the downloads! So if they do put a game like Goldeneye on the wii Rare will still get some royalties.

"gamecube games will NOT be downloadable. at around 1.5GB they're simply too big."

Yeah, my reply is late but here you go:

Most game cube games are really 450-700mb (Still 20-35x bigger than N64 games, but still...) The rest of the data on the mini-dvd is junk 0's and 1's to fill in the beginning of the drive, because GCN discs are read from the outside in, as opposed to normal dvds which are from inside to out, like a record. The only games which are larger than that are the Tales of Symphonia and the Baten Kaitos' of the generation. ^^

I wonder how responsive games like R-Type will feel?

The NES was a sprite-system. The CPU updated some registers during the vertical-blanking period, and the graphics were scanned out to the tv as they are generated!

Every emulator renders to a frame-buffer, and scans that frame-buffer out when it is complete. That adds at least 1/60th second of latency. This is why some emulated games don't have quite the "feel" of the original.

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/29/nintendo-revolution-to-support-external-hdds-and-other-3rd-party-s/

Yeah, it does. Fortunately, you can buy one as large as you want. I personally bought an 80 gig external hard drive about a year ago for $80. While I probably won't need one quite that large for the Wii, it's nice to know I can get as much space as I want for pretty cheap.

Plus, I like the idea of just buying thumb drives instead of memory cards. Let's put it this way - I can buy a thumb drive from Staples that holds the same amount as an Xbox 360 memory card for just 8 bucks.
