Xbox 360 crammed into laptop form
Master of all things portable and playable, Ben Heckendorn has managed to create an Xbox 360 laptop within the space of three months. The unit weighs approximately 14 pounds, is 2.8 inches thick and, more importantly, can play Dead Rising. Through an intricate process that undoubtedly involved soldering, bending and the use of arcane magic, Ben combined the 17" HD monitor, Wi-Fi adapter, a keyboard and a water-cooling system with the innards of an Xbox 360 to produce what is likely one of the least productive (and possibly best) laptop devices we've seen yet -- this stance will likely change should robotic lap dancers suddenly become the norm.Ben's official site seems to be taking a hammering, but the page dedicated to his latest creation still appears to be functional. If you encounter problems when viewing the images (none of which depict the system placed on an actual lap), wait a few moments and refresh. If you're wondering how exactly he put it all together, you'd best start reading the article right from the beginning.

hats off to Ben Heckendorn, that is just too damn cool.

This guy's work never fails to amaze me... wow!
If I were the head of Apple (or MS/Sony/Nintendo), I would hire Ben at whatever price he would work for.
Congrats on another great design, Ben.

Eh, my cat weighs 14 lbs and he sits on my lap all the time. He doesn't display video games, though, but I've contacted Ben to see what he can do about that.
The1 @ Sep 11th 2006 1:07PM
This is awesome. I already e-mailed him to see how he would charge to builkd another. My guess is $3K.
The Intangible Fact @ Sep 11th 2006 1:09PM
If MS was to incorporate that design for the 360 it would sell like hot cakes.
John @ Sep 11th 2006 1:12PM
fucking awesome! :D

Link has been Joystiqed/Farked/Digg effect/Slashdotted to death. Servers am cry. Ben Heck rules, he should legally change his name to Ben 'Hacker'ndorn.

The only things I care about:
Where can I get one?
How many piggy banks must I slay in order to afford it?
cringer8 @ Sep 11th 2006 1:27PM
@ The1
He usually does contract work for projects like that and won't repeat it. The client paid good money to have a "one-of-a-kind."
I contacted him about the portable Colecovision he made and he said he won't be doing another. This will probably be similar.
Try contacting him for something completely different and offer him $20,000 and you'll probably be more successful.

Hmmm interesting. I wonder if he combines the power brick as well. If it does, can you fry an egg with it? hehehe..
HaloBreaker @ Sep 11th 2006 1:45PM
He might of wanted to add some antifreeze to the water, within a year or so that water will turn murky green and brown, and will clog up the pump, rad, and pipes.
I learned the hard way. >(

"I wonder if he combines the power brick as well. "
You can see the power brick sitting next to it.
cringer8 @ Sep 11th 2006 1:46PM
@hohoho
He replaced MS's heat sinks with better ones and a different liquid cooling system. There is no brick, just a single cord exiting the back. It’s pretty impressive electrical engineering.
cringer8 @ Sep 11th 2006 1:50PM
OH...there's the brick right there...lol. I thought I read in engaget's article that the brick was gone. I guess I should do less reading (poorly) and more "looking."

This guy has skills. He obviously really enjoys it too. He should get a job at a design firm.

Dear Mr. Heckendorn,
My birthday is in a week and a half, make it happen.

NorCal05, the white(ish) background loads in after the pictures finish loading... the page loads slowly today tho.

Wonder how much he'll do this for the Wii.
crono141 @ Sep 11th 2006 4:08PM
Wii needs stereoscopic goggles, with the sensor bar placed anywhere in any room. It would be awesome. You could wear it.

This guy might be the best modding artist out there. Wow.
It'd be fun to lug that thing to a coffee shop or something. (Ben: a few photographs from Starbucks, please?)
You'd probably get a lot of dirty looks from everyone writing peacefully at their laptops, though...
fumar @ Sep 12th 2006 1:30AM
Wow, simply amazing. I wonder if he will do a PS3 laptop?
