Their naming scheme isn't very nice.
And "kids" is a bit limiting your audience.
Anyway, the media slot seems smaller than SMC, so is it binary compatible?

Another crap-over priced handheld. Just give your kid an old phone and save your money.

I don't think this is really for "kids" Steve. I just think it's a stupid name.

I'm more concerned about the screen resolution. How can this thing be fully compatible with the GP32, which had a 320x240 screen? There's plenty of homebrew and first-party GP32 software I'd like to experience, but I'm not sure that the XGP kids is the platform that will provide that.

This isn't actually a new development--it was displayed at E3 '06 (along with XGP and XGP mini).

The media slot is for SD cards. Also, the report at DCEmu says the Kids will be released this October, and more information will *supposedly* be released on the 15th of this month.

What would be the point of these things? It seems like buying either a DS or PSP would give you a much better system at a lower price.

It's unfortunate that people hack the PSP for "homebrew", instead of buying one of these devices which are open and designed for it.

As for the GXP being "overpriced" - The price of the PSP is subsidized by the games. If Sony sold the PSP at cost+markup, these alternatives would look very attractive in price.

RE: C. Grant

I think that "you know, for kids" statement is a clever, thinnly veiled Coen Brothers reference.

I'd be willing to say: "PSP Killer"
though I'd hate to think of it...But in reality, the PSP is basicly homebrew. And homebrew is this thing. I want to know more about it. I'd buy this so that I can keep on upgrading my PSP and have THIS for my homebrew.

this will fail. end of story. While the XGP would be great is they decided to open it up to emulation like the gp2x, if they don't...it's done for. I say this because as a proud owner of a GP2X I enjoy playing all the great old 2D console games on the go, but people are beginning to come along with PSX emulators that will run good, but the GP2X hardware itself cannot handle it. The games run at a rough 5-10 fps if your lucky. This is because the GP2X does not have any kind of 3D acceleration capabilities whatsoever. Everything you see is being done with a 2D graphics chip. The VGX...however, has the same great dual-core CPU configuration that the GP2X has, but it's also clocked higher AND it has both 2D acceleration, and an OpenGL compatible 3D acceleration chip, which would help make PSX Emulation a breeze. Unfortunately, I don't see this happening.

To anyone who's looking for a great handheld system, the GP2X is the way to go as far as bang-for-your buck goes. It's got a built in media player, so I can rip all my DVD's to DivX or mpeg4 files and watch them on the go, it runs linux, and it supports a HUGE variety of emulators. I use MAME on it constantly to play Metal Slug. It's great. Lik-Sang has em' for around $180, and it's the best handheld I've ever got. I know PSP does most of this stuff too, but it's not "made" for homebrew, the GP2X is.
