Updates that improve the experience can be great, but I too don't want to see the stifiling of homebrew. But I'm hoping that Nintendo might release dev tools like Microsoft's XNA. Would be a good compromise. I'm really haping though, that it doesn't encourage laziness and a "patch it later" mentality. (Or in the case of Dead Rising, don't patch it later...") Don't let your qaulity control slip Nintendo!

Wii: It means they will stop homebrew at all costs.

Simply put:
I make homebrew.
I make homebrew NES emulator.
I share homebrew NES emulator.
Everyone plays free NES Roms.
Nintendo loses.

See?

I only see this as a positive. Nintendo gets the system and OS out to consumers, listens to what they like and dislike, and tweaks it for free. Microsoft has been experiencing great success with this; I'd like to see Nintendo do the same.

Reorganization of the menus, new options for customizing, and new features (such as better external memory navigation - if required) would be welcome, I'm sure. I'll bet the OS is going to be nice, but allowing it to be updated is a great move.

All these stifling-of-homebrew comments seem off to me. Sure I can see selective things being stopped (homebrew NES emulators :) But I seem to remember multiple comments from Nintendo people stating that their environment would be open and as conducive to support for homebrew game development as possible to make the platform accessible for everyone. Is there a quote that directly opposes this? Evidence somewhere?

Well, with the updates to the OS it would make sense that Nintendo is trying to downplay the use of illegal ROMs/Emulators however I don't think Nintendo is trying to thwart all homebrewing. Nintendo has stated that they would like to see indie developers and others start making new game for old systems through use of the Virtual Console. Nintendo stated back in July, I believe, that with the release of the VC Nintendo wanted to help out developers that don't have the budget like that of the bigger companies. Besides we haven't heard anything about how Gamecube backwards compatablity will work (I hope and pray it isn't like XBOX360) the Wii itself might need some upgrades. There is also the issue of security, if Nintendo is going to have the WiiConnect24 and Gamer A is buying games for the VC through the Wi-Fi that information for credit cards and what not could be plucked by a malicious person.

I have to say too many unknowns about the system to make accusations like "This means they will have the ability to thwart/stifle homebrew developement ala the PSP's firmware upgrades."

Good and Bad

Good: Wii get us a better wii experience

Bad: This will probably thwart my efforts to port Saturn games from PC Roms to the VC via USB and fun script editing...

Yes, I'm that desperate for Saturn compatibility

Naturally, the first thing that comes to everyone's mind is stopping homebrew software. More likely it means new browser and setup menus, and more 3rd party hardware compatibility.

I don't really care if the OS requires periodic updates, so long as they are transparrent. If a game requires an OS update, the game should come with the required patch. I doubt Nintendo will do what Sony did with the PSP -- distributing games and patches seperately -- which is about the dumbest thing ever.

There is a concern that updates to the OS might cause issues with older software. This always seems to happen on any platform, regardless whether it is Windows, Java, .net, or whatever.

Sigh. So many changes are happening to console technology this generation. They're all basicly turning into mini PCs.
