Horse Crap. Long Live Modders. I can speculate it won't be very long before the wii is ripped apart and hacked. You wanna know the real secret.... As soon as someone finds out how add the classic games into the correct format (imagine a .nes), they are gonna just upload it to the SD memory card anyhow.
And even with that Nintendo will still end up selling alot of classic games regardless. Its a win win. Making some money off old material with the possibility that the old games may get transfered on there any how. So I guess I am wondering about the security of the wii. I think the 24/7 its on the internet thing is gonna be all about firmware upgrades. 24/7 protection I am willing to bet. Not such a bad idea. But someone is gonna get slick eventually and then we'll all here about it. The world of video games is an intresting one and none of it truly exists except for in the form of electrons and light.

My goodness! You Nintendogs are such lame-asses. You'll make any excuse you can think of in defense of your Wii. If the Wii couldn't produce color in their graphics, you'd say, " well who needs color anyway? I've got crayons for that."

Do you own a DVD? Then you (almost) certainly own a DVD player. Why do you need another DVD player? People forget that there are costs to these things. Maybe it would be capable of reading the discs, but they'd need to make the system read and output the DVD- that's software that needs to be programmed. I'm pretty sure they need to get a license to play back DVDs from someone- that would up the cost. And, again, who honestly has a need for this feature? Who owns DVDs, but no DVD player?! They're only $30, and I'd rather save that money than have to pay for a feature I'd never use. Besides, DVD playback on consoles has NEVER been very good. My PS2 is horribly over-sensitive to scratches. A regular DVD player would work better, anyway.

----
And, a friendly note to Jack Thompson just in case he comes back here: I realize that this was probably the top story on the site when you came here, and, since you obviously don't spend a lot of time with game sites, you just assumed this was a general forum for comments. This specific page is actually JUST for comments about Nintendo Wii and DVDs- there is another, separate page on this website for comments discussing the recent shootings. It's an easy and understandable mistake for someone not familiar with sites like this to make, so I just figured you'd like to know that discussion would be better received on that page instead.

Im am alitle disapointed because DVD should come standard. But if i wanted a dvd player i would get one.
Plus its a wasteto watch 10000 dvds @ 1.5 cents per movie(10000 / 250 = 40 1 / 40 + 1.5 cents) when you can acomplish the same thing for .003 cents a movie (using the same equation as above, aproximating). Its the same with the ds and psp, and MP3 player, i bought it to play games (or in MP3 case listen to music) not watch movies.
Im disapointed but can understand

Surely not having a DVD player on it will be great for people like me who don't want their children to watch violent hollywood DVD's, I don't want them growing up and doing anything silly now do I?

People...since the drive can read a full DVD-9, expect to see a homebrew DVD player in 3, 2, 1...ops, we already have a media player for GC - http://www.gc-linux.org
Look for MFE
As soon as homebrew is possible with the wii, we will have a dvd player, don't worry.

Guy guys calm down. So what you can't play DVD's on Wii! You can't still wtach movies. IT'S GOT THE FREAKiNG INTERNET FOR god's sake. Just Download you music movies or pix to whatever size SD card you buy. Not to mention the 2 USB slot in the back, for let's say a card reader and a Compact Flash card or SD inside of that. All because it can't play DVD's doesn't mean it can't play movies at all.

Upset it doesn't play DVDs?

If you don't have any type of DVD player by now then you:
1. don't have the need for a DVD player and don't care anyway,
2. probably aren't a gamer,
3. are only a gamer and have no interest in movies,
4. are probably reading this at a public library because you don't have a computer.

why DVD playback? like all Nintendo consoles, it's just a toy, not a family entertainment setup box battling for the living room...

how wrong was Steve Jobs...

If you don't have a DVD player by now, you're either a young person with limited funs or a technophobe whose idea of entertainment is making shadowpuppets and sound effects like the dude from the Police Academy movies- so I imagine this will not diminish the appeal of the system across a significant demographic, unlike the failure to include a DVD player in the Gamecube. If you include the Xbox, the PS2, and the 360, I now have FIVE DVD players, and need another like I need a kick to the groin. What's more, like any other product; the more things that it can do, the more things can go wrong. As long as it is as bulletproof, reliable and fun as its predecessors, I could care less.

I like how the few Sony fanboys left (you can easily find out who they are by looking at the first ten comments on any given Joystiq post, they're all saying, "OMG Joystiq is teh f4gs, theyre sooo biased.") are coming up with all kinds of excuses to make the Wii look like a failure because it won't play DVDs.

Seriously, everything plays DVDs. My computer plays DVDs. My XBox plays DVDs. My DVD player plays DVDs (whoda thunk it?). My PS2... doesn't play DVDs anymore, but it did back during the few months it worked (reliable hardware). My toaster probably has DVD playback features. Alright, so maybe not the toaster, but still, why would I need an other DVD player? Even if the Wii had DVD playback, Sony fanboys would find something else to complain about ("If the Wii is so great, how come you can't control the DVD with the motion sensor? That's so lame. Joystiq is so biased.")

But U No Wat I Think I Think They Gonna Have An External Kit For DVD Playback Like Da Xbox Did.

And Wat Da Hell Dat Shit Shoulda Been Free N E Way Just To Make Up For Wat They Did 2 Us With Da Gamecube.

Dang Nintendo Not Again Please Tell Me U Have A Back Up Plan For DVD Playback.
BCuz I Do Not Want To Pack A DVD Player Next To My Wii When Im Out Off Town Dat Takes Space.

If I needed a DVD player to enjoy a game consloe, that would probably tell me something about the quality of games I was playing. Why not just get a Vitorinox console? comes with its own corkscrew. One more fact: It costs less to make a console and a DVD player than it does to make a console with a DVD player. Anyone Who's typing crap on here obviously has a computer and therefore DVD playback options anyway.

A lot of people here are so narrow minded. You all assume that a lot of people have a dvd player these days at home (I have on my pc but not on my tv). I would like to insert a different parameter here. Imagine that you have to leave home for a week or so, to visit your grandparents in a village somewhere far. They got tv but nothing else. Where's the point of carrying a bunch of devices like Wii, dvd player etc when you could at "least" save carrying one? I find this marketing move of removing this feature annoying...

I have to say that I DO mind it not having DVD Capabilities.

I like the Wii Truly I do, I'm Married and have a 2 1/2 Year old daughter. I'm not rich by a long shot so when I heard that the Wii was supposed to be under 100.00 I was jumping out of my seat, especially considering all that it could do.

Now before everyone says oh why not got get a 30.00 DVD player, let me just tell you that I already use my PS2 to play DVD's infact it probably gets more use as a DVD player than a game console. I'm disappointed with Sony for making a 600.00 Console that not many "Middle Class" Family's can use, in fact to even get the most out of it you have to have a 4000.00 Doller Television!

The way I see it I'd love to just junk my gamecube, my PS2, and my DVD player. Just get a Wii that can playback DVD's and all my Fav games from the last 25 years or so. Hook it up to my TV and be done with it.

I don't want to have a DVD Player and a Wii Right next to eachother if one of them can do both! What would it have cost to make the damn thing capable of reading DVD's couldn't be more than 30.00, and If I'm going to already spend 250.00 spending 300.00 is still less than the cost of the most basic PS3!
