Joyswag: Get a call from Otis, win Dead Rising

We've been feeling charitable lately. As promised, we've got four more copies of Capcom's zompocalyptic Dead Rising we're just dying to give away. How are we going to do it? We'll run one of our favorite contests! Inspired by Something Awful's rant on Otis, Dead Rising's "helpful" security guard, we've created this caterpillar of an overlay that you can edit (using your Photoshop chops) to make into your own beautiful Dead Rising-inspired butterfly. It's a blank canvas, so feel free to add not only zombies to your mise en scène.
Send the butterflies in .jpeg format to joyswag [dot] submissions [at] gmail [dot] com. We'll select one submission each day, over the next four days, that either makes us laugh the most, or infects us with enough T-Virus to tur ... B R A I N S. You better get started, all entries must be received by the witching hour -- our lawyers inform us that we should make that a little more specific, so you've got until 11:59 EST -- each night, from now until Monday night. If you win, we'll pack your precious game in a box, put that box in another box, write a magical incantation on its surface and then it'll somehow get to you. Be warned, this can be a very lengthy process, so please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.
Big ups to Capcom for the prizes!

Guys, it really isn't fair to be giving a copy of Dead Rising away without an HDTV to go with it.

You have got yourself a challenge sir!

Jesus Christ enough with the HD jokes, I have a 23 inch SDTV, I play in widescreen I can read everything in the game fine except for the DATE on the watch. My friend also has a regular TV and has never had a problem with any of the text in the game thus far. I swear to god the biggest pussies in the world come to this site to bitch about irrelevant shit. I almost didn't buy the game because I was so convinced I wouldnt be able to read. I wonder how many people missed out on this awesome game because of YOUR BITCHING.
Cool contest tho.

"I wonder how many people missed out on this awesome game because of YOUR BITCHING."
You must have superhuman vision then, because the game looked like ass on my 27" WEGA. Over component cables, no less. Of course, it *did* finally give me the incentive necessary to go out and buy an HDTV :P
There are some real concerns with this game and its small text size. Just because you and one of your buddies haven't experienced it doesn't mean that others everyone else hasn't either. Grow up.
BIGGEN @ Sep 15th 2006 7:18PM
get over this text issue, i have seen this game on my cousin's 13" tv and it is readable so people are simply bitching just to be bitching.

11:59 in what time zone?

Wouldn't it be a spoiler to tell you whether or not it's a spoiler? ... but no, the T-virus is a reference to Capcom's OTHER zombie game, Resident Evil.
The two franchises, to the best of my knowledge, are mutually exclusive. No worries.

Hey hey, just eat you friend's brain & take his crt monitor with his X360 vga cables and you are all set.
By the way, where is the beer..*hick*

djsyndrome, non-hd component isn't that great. use s-video.
James @ Sep 15th 2006 4:52PM
@11: Enzo, component (separate R-G-B cables) is better than S-video, which has lower signal bandwidth. The "hierarchy" of analog TV signal paths is (low to high):
RF (like you used on your Atari)
Composite
S-Video
Component
VGA
Some might argue that component gives an even better picture than VGA since it's easier to shield the individual color channels to reduce crosstalk; I think it's probably a pretty even match.
I had a Gamecube hooked up by composite, then switched over to component on my 32" SDTV. The definition of shapes and text didn't change much, but the colors were really different -- it was like Dorothy landing in Oz. Out of nowhere everything was brighter: the plants looked like the greens of a real lawn; little Pikmin were vibrant. I hadn't really gotten what "videophiles" meant when the used the term "vibrant" before, but I didn't need it explained once I saw the difference.
That said, the difference between the lowest and highest "level" isn't nearly so great as the difference between 480i (via any connection) and, say, 720p on a high-def set. But if you're stuck with low-def (like I was until quite recently), a component hookup is the way to get the absolute best picture out of it.

Man, I totally hope I win a copy. I'm dying to play through the rest of the game.
kagai @ Sep 16th 2006 2:12AM
Well, I'm playing it on my 7" Wanko black and white wrist-mounted tv and I can't read jack!
