According to a report over at 1up, many of us may have jumped the gun in loudly proclaiming shenanigans against Nintendo when they announced the Opera browser would need to be downloaded with Wii points (see: not free). Turns out, we can call shenanigans, but we may have to wait until Summer 2007 to do so based on some information from Japan. The rumor started based on a paragraph on Nintendo's Japanese webpage, where it stated that while gamers will be charged for the browser via Wii points, out-of-the-box Wiis up until the summer of 2007 can enjoy surfing for free. In contacting Nintendo of America to confirm if this would be the case here as well, NOA "would only confirm to 1UP that the Opera browser will cost Wii points, and couldn't delve into price specifics."
Obviously, we all have a lot more questions regarding the matter, so keep an eye on Wii Fanboy for future updates.

[Update: Neglected to clarify that the 1up article is referring to the Japanese version of the browser. We assumed that what goes for Japan, goes for America, overlooking what our 5th grade English teach told us about assuming. The post has been updated.]
